After what seemed like years of wondering around the Carnival, I gave up my search for Marcy.
Why did David tell me those things? Does he know about the hooded man? Is the hooded man here? All I know is I think I should follow what David told me, and try not to freak out.
My feet stopped at a little ice-cream stand. It’s a white trailer with a poster of all the ice-cream flavors they have. Even though it’s getting pretty cold out here, I have an intense craving for lots of sugar. I walked up to the stand, took my money out of the butt of my jeans, and casually looked behind me.
Good, no creepy clowns.
I turned and smiled at the cute ice-cream guy. I found myself stepping I in front of the ice-cream poster.
He tapped the counter, and leaned forward in a flirty manner. “What can I get you?”
I searched through the menu with a hand on my chin. I kind of want Watermelon ice…but a chip which would also help my chocolate craving. “One vanilla—“I stopped when I noticed nobody actually in the trailer. I held jumped up to the ledge, and poked my head in the tall window, “hello?”
The trailer door opened, and the guy came back into the trailer. He fixed the apron around his waist, “Sorry, I had to uh…throw something out.”
I frowned, as the guy fixed the hat on his head, “No problem.”
Ice-cream guy leaned on the counter once again, “So…what can I get you?” he repeated in a quiet, but husky voice.
I blushed realizing how handsome he is up close. He has shaggy light brown hair, and brown eyes. I blushed even more when his huge brown eyes reminded me of David’s. “I’ll have a vanilla and chocolate twist with rainbow sprinkles, hot fudge, m & m’s, Oreo crunches, gummy bears, gummy worms, those chocolate chips with the little round sprinkles, and whipped cream.”
He pressed a million buttons, and kicked the machine when it wouldn’t work. His hands found the ice-cream lever, which instantly made the ice-cream come out. He turned to give me a nervous laugh, “I’m new,” he explained, and filled the bowl with the sugary goodness. After a few minutes he put the huge sundae on top of the counter, “That will be…” It seemed he was counting in his head. “...six dollars and twenty five cents.”
I handed him the money, eying him suspecially. "Thanks." The boy then winked with his right eye, which flashed to green as it re-opened. “My pleasure.”
My mouth dropped as well as my sundae.
"I'll tell ya," the icecream boy said, flexing his muscles and making a disgusted look at them. He clucked his tongue and said, “This kid is weak. I wish I knew that before I killed him and took his image, you know?”
My hands loosened, until I dropped the sundae, “Oh no...
His brown eyes lingered to mine like fire as Death purred out, "Oh yes."
“Leave me alone. I mean it!" I said, pointing to him and backing up.
He grinned like a cat, and in an instant disappeared. My breathing hitched. I turned to run, to of course smash into a wall.
“Mother—“a familiar deep voice hissed, following by other curse words I haven’t heard in a while. I cringed at the water- covered, maroon chest in front of me. He crushed the water bottle in his hands, and then glared down at his shirt, clenching his jaw.
I covered my mouth, “Oh my--I’m so sorry, David! I didn't mean it” I sputtered, and without thinking twice grabbed napkins from the trailer. I whirled around to find him right behind me once again.
He flipped the dark brown hair off of his forehead, and smiled weakly at me. “It's fine. I got it.”
I blushed, and backed up to the trailer. “I’m so embarrassed, I was in a rush.”
Since the Grim Reaper just took over someone’s body. By the way I didn’t follow what you told me and looked him in the eyes so now he can have his way with me.
David pressed a napkin to his shirt, and flashed a cocky grin. “You never cease to bring out my bad side, Miss Williams.”
I blushed even harder at the use of my last name. I shook it off, and then pushed his hand away from his chest. “I’ll do it.” The awkward tension between us increased, as I tried to push him away from the Trailer. I doubt the green-eyed man is gone.
My Boss stayed in his place, with a scowl in my direction. I tried to push him harder, to have no effect on him. His face lit up in amusement, instead of anger. “Can we…go over there?” I questioned, continually trying to shove him away.
“Fine, I have to tell you something anyways.” He stepped away, and I stumbled after him.My eyes drifted to his bicep as we walked, to see a faded tattoo. My curious hand grazed it, making him slap my hand away, “Don’t touch me.”
I attempted to not look too taken-aback from his nastiness, “Ok.”
When I continued to drag along behind his long strides, he grabbed onto my wrist and pulled me forward through the heard of people. We stopped along the fence for the Ferris wheel, and I spotted Marcy in line. She waved, and motioned to the tall guy next to him pretending to give his butt a smack.
I gave her a small wave, and then realized the heated gaze on me. David snorted, and crossed his large arms over his chest, “Are you done?”
“No.”
“Excuse me?”
“I mean yes,” I mumbled, and leveled my gaze with his already dry shirt.
“Half of my employees are calling you ‘The Lip Slasher,” he stated, in a dry tone.
I burst out laughing, putting my hands on my knees. My lungs begged for air, as I continued in hysterics. When I laugh for real, it sounds more like an evil giggle then a laugh. A warm finger lifted at my chin, forcing my head up, “Does it look like I’m laughing to you?”
My face slacked, as I stared at his gorgeous statue-like face. I couldn’t help but glance at his jagged tattoo, and the scar over his eyebrow, “No,” I whispered, holding back tears.
He stepped away from me, and leaned on the fence, “Sorry I’m not in the best mood.”
I put my hands on my hips, “I noticed. You have severe anger issu—“
“Shut the hell up. I don’t need any nagging.”
I fisted my hands, anger boiling in my blood. “Then maybe you shouldn’t have hired me! No wonder you didn’t have an assistant you’re a jerk! You’re a complete jer--”
He got up quickly and put a hand over my mouth, “Faith. Knock. It. Off,” David growled, looking around us, “people are looking.”
I moved my hand away from him, “Sorry I’m an annoyance.” I stepped away from him, “and stop giving me that look, it’s freaking scary.”
“What look?”
“The one when you narrow your eyes and your lip pulls up a bit in a scowl."
David let out a long snickered and his lips pulled into a small smile. "My lip scowls?"
My cheeks reddened. “Yes.”
“I'm glad you noticed. You're very observant."
I pointed at him, “You’re doing it again! You're being nice to me!” I watched his eyes dance with amusement at my outburst, “There’s something wrong with you…you’re different.”
He pointed to himself in disbelief, ‘Me?’ he mouthed.
‘Yes you,’ I mouthed back, stabbed my finger at his chest.
He stood up puffing his chest out a little, “I think there’s something wrong with you.”
I crossed my arms over my chest mimicking him. The sunset is making his hair look lighter, his skin darker, and his eyes look like glass, “How did you know about the guy?”I whispered, “And why is it you tend to pop out of nowhere?”
His face grew serious, “I’ll leave that up to you.” David pushed off of the fence, purposely pushing me to the side as he passed by. I scowled at him, but he leaned into me again, “If I have to speak to you again regarding these cries of attention, I’ll personally drag you home,” he whispered harshly in my ear, sending chills down my back.
He melted into the crowd of people, leaving me alone on the side of the path. After a while my gaze locked onto Marcy talking to the guy in line, then drifted to the Ferris wheel.
“Hey Faith!” Marcy called out, coming over to me, “we’re going to head to the Fun House, this line is too long.”
My eyes widened, “Fun House?”
“Yes…” she trailed, “as in mirrors and creepy laughs making girls scream, and guys hug them to their chest.”
I rolled my eyes, “Oh.”
“Come on their meeting us after getting a soda!” she pulled at my wrist, tugging me away from the fence, “oh there’s Derek! He’s yours!”
I dragged my feet in the mud, “No, no—“
“Derek here she is!” she screamed, to a guy briskly walking towards us.
A boy with black hair and hazel eyes waved at me. I stopped tugging away from her, and fell forward. Derek caught me before I hit the dir, and chuckled, “You ok?”
I managed a nod, “Yes, thanks.”
Marcy put her hands on her hips, and brushed the hair out of her eye. She smiled at Derek, and pulled me to the side, “Faith, use your awesome charm and make me look good. That’s my guy’s brother!”
We both returned out gazes to Derek, who has his hands in his dark green sweatshirt. Marcy rolled her eyes, turning to walk away, “Awkward,” she sang.
Derek motioned for me to walk, “Come on it’ll be fun. I’ll even hold your hand if you get scared. I’m a Teddy bear that way,” he told me sweetly, with a nice smile.
When I made no move to walk, he pouted a little and walked ahead of me. I puffed out a breath, and jogged to catch up with them. After a long period of time we stopped in front of the biggest clown face I’ve ever seen, with the words “Poppy’s Fun House” scribbled in red and blue paint.
Marcy jumped a little, when she saw a blond boy reaching us and ran to him. He gave her a small hug, and they entered the Fun House holding hands. Derek put a hand on my back, and pulled me forward.
I stopped like a rock, “No I can’t.”
Derek frowned, looking a bit upset, “Oh, ok…I’ll walk slowly so you can catch up.”
He disappeared into the dark entrance, leaving my stranded. I blew out a shaky breath, counted to thirty, and walked into the entrance myself.
