“Attention faculty. This is a lockdown; please close and lock your door. This is not a drill, I repeat; this is not a drill.”

Everyone froze for a moment. Ms. Morel was the first to snap out of the shocked stupor. “Everyone keeps quiet while I go and lock the door.” She said calmly. “I’m sure it’s just a false alarm. We’ve had many of those before.” She said, locking the door to the classroom. She moved to the windows to start closing the curtains.

Yes, there have been false alarms. But this lockdown happened just after one of our classmates was exposed as a murderer, and three people from our school had been killed (two of which were by the courtesy of Shawn).

I glanced around the room for a second. Everyone’s faces were tense with shock and fear, and though Ms. Morel sounded calm, I could tell that she was shaken as well.

I thought for a moment. How could there be a lockdown? Kyle was already in prison, Spike was fatally wounded, and Shawn was right next to me. So who could it be? Wait, maybe the lockdown wasn’t caused by an intruder, but the discovery of a corpse.

“Class?” Ms. Morel called softly. “Could everyone sit beneath their lab tables? I’m going to turn off the lights.” She tried to say this casually, but the fact that she was even asking us to do this was a giveaway that she was worried.

We all slid down to the floor and beneath the lab tables, which had a wood panel across the back, so I couldn’t see much except Shawn and the window behind us.

I thought more about the situation. If there was a corpse, then the lockdown must have occurred because they weren’t sure if the culprit was still around. Fuck, who the hell would just walk into a school while it was in session and kill somebody?! Oh right…the guy next to me. I hadn’t seen Shawn all day, so that meant that he could have killed someone anytime between first and fifth period! But who… Coach. Maybe Shawn was irritated about not being able to kill Las Vegas, so he went after the P.E teacher, who was picking on me.

I slowly moved my gaze to the murderer next to me. To my surprise, he was looking into space with a perplexed expression. Did he have no clue about what was going on either? Though he could have been doing it to play along.

I tentatively poked Shawn lightly in the shoulder. He looked up at me with a questioning look.

Since the room was dead silent it probably was a bad idea to talk, or even whisper. I pointed at him while giving him a questioning look.

He raised an eyebrow at me in confusion. I tried mouthing ‘did you kill the P.E teacher’, but that only got me another confused look. Augh, how the hell was I supposed to ask him!? Maybe I could try to use motions…

I pointed at him slowly, pantomimed stabbing, and then flexed my bicep to try and indicate that I was talking about the P.E teacher.

By the end of my pantomime Shawn was biting his lip, on the verge of breaking down in laughter.

I glared at him; I was trying to be serious!

Shawn smirked at me and reached above to the tabletop, pulling down his notebook and pencil a moment later. Oh yeah, I could have just written it out the whole time…

I took the notebook and pencil and began to write. Did you kill the PE teacher?

Shawn frowned at me, took the pencil and wrote: not, why do you think that?

I frowned when I saw the ‘t’ he wrote. Were you about to write ‘not yet’?

Shawn glanced at me in annoyance before writing: No

I took the pencil and scribbled: liar

So? I’m pissed that I can’t kill LV, and that fucker would just be getting what he deserved.

Shawn thrust the pencil in my direction, sending me a glare that dared me to argue with him. I just sighed softly and wrote: That’s what I thought you’d say.

I handed to pencil back to Shawn. Aw, you know me so well. Did you think that I killed him and that’s why there’s the lockdown?

I took the pencil back and wrote: Basically, I just don’t know what else it could be.

There are a lot of possibilities: it could be a false alarm, or the recent murders could have attracted some freaks.

I looked at him with concern before writing: freaks?

Shawn took the pencil nonchalantly and wrote: I attracted Jade here, so there could be some more.

I looked at him in alarm before scribbling in a panic. How many people’s bad side are you on!!!!???

Shawn just shrugged without taking the pencil. I glowered at him and thrust the pencil in his direction, urging him to answer. If there were more potential life-ruining factors that I had to deal with, I wanted to fucking know!

After glaring down an unconcerned Shawn for about a minute, he finally accepted the pencil and began to write. Don’t worry about it. You’re safe as long as I’m here. The safest person in this fucking room.

I raised an eyebrow questioningly at him. That wasn’t an answer to my fucking question. And what the hell did he mean by ‘I was the safest in the room’?

Seeing my confusion, Shawn elaborated. If someone comes into this room and so much as looks at you, I’ll slice their jugular with a damn pencil.

Well wasn’t that lovely. I looked at him in discomfort while he smiled affectionately at me in response. We stayed like this for a few moments before I took the pencil from Shawn and began to write.

How long do you think we’re going to be stuck here?

When I finished, I handed the pencil to Shawn. While he was writing, my ears picked up the faint sound of police sirens. Shit. I listened in horror as the bellowing of the sirens got increasingly louder and multiplied. After a few minutes, when it sounded like the sirens were loud enough to be right outside the building, they were turned off one by one. The room became silent aside from the sound of someone quietly hyperventilating.

That confirmed it; this wasn’t a false alarm. Something was happening. Again. I glanced over to Shawn to see what his reaction was. He wore a tense and contemplative expression. When he noticed me watching him, he leant down to my ear. “Corpse.” He whispered gravely.

I looked at him in shock. How did he know? And if it wasn’t Shawn, Kyle, or Spike, then who could it be? Fuck, our school was turning into a murder magnet, and if my hunch was right, it was probably related to Shawn, even if he didn’t do it himself.

I leaned over to Shawn and was about to whisper something when the telecom turned on. “Hello, my name is officer Tores. An incident has occurred, and officers will be coming to your classrooms to escort you off the premises. When they arrive, please line up in an orderly fashion, and only take what you absolutely need, such as communication devices. Also, please answer any questions officers may have for you. Thank you for your cooperation.” The telecom shut off after that.

A few minutes later, some policemen entered the classroom. “Everyone please get out from under his or her desk.” The serious voice of an officer instructed.

I was about to get up when I saw page Shawn and I had been writing on lying vulnerably on the floor. Hell knows what could happen if the police got a hold of that. Without thinking, I folded the paper into a small rectangle and shoved it into my sock, where I was sure it wouldn’t be taken.

When I stood up to sit in my chair, I saw Shawn looking at me in surprise. I raised my eyebrow questioningly at him, and he just smiled and waved dismissively. What was that about? All I did was… well crap. I felt like doing a face-palm. I purposely hid a piece of evidence that Shawn was a crazy stalking murderer from the authorities. Ah fuck, at least I probably got some Shawn-trust-points out of it.

“Before we escort you out, may I ask who had P.E in third or fourth period?” The officer asked. Two people raised their hands. “Alright, may you tell me both of your names?”

I almost dropped my jaw. P.E? I resisted the urge to look at Shawn; what if he did somehow kill the Coach, and he was just lying to me!? Shawn must have known what I was thinking, because I felt an irritated kick on my leg from under the table.

“Thank you.” The officer said, having finished taking the names. “Now, starting from this table, I was you all to exit the classroom in a line.” She said, pointing to the far left table in the front.

Shawn and I, being in the back right of the room, joined the line last. Before leaving, I made sure to grab my phone and slip it into my back pocket. We were then all escorted out of the building and to the parking lot, where many other groups of students were gathered, all speaking quietly to each other with nervous expressions. Police officers stood around the group to inform students when they were straying to far away.

Scanning the crowd, my eyes fell on a very scared looking Matt standing alone. I glanced over to Shawn, who nodded in acknowledgment before heading off in a separate direction. I then trotted anxiously over to Matt, who looked relieved when he saw me.

“Thank god Jake, it’s you.” Matt breathed in relief. I wasn’t used to seeing Matt so shaken and scared.

“Are you alright Matt?” I asked in concern. Compared to the other students, Matt looked ten times more scared.

Matt absently shook his head. “No…No I’m not.” He said to me, his voice cracking.

I gently held his shoulders. “Matt, what’s wrong?” I asked worriedly.

I could feel Matt trembling under my hands. “I…I really need to tell you something. Please, I don’t know what to do.” He said.

I nodded. “It’s okay Matt, you can tell me.” I said.

Matt looked around anxiously and pulled me to the side of the crowd of students. “So… that lockdown, right?” I nodded. “Well, before then, at lunch…I went to the gym to talk to C-…Coach about joining varsity. H-He wasn’t in his office, so I went to look for him in the gym, and…and he…” Matt trailed off, his expression becoming distant.

“And what Matt?” I asked, feeling more and more dread with every sentence he said.

“He…He was just hanging there man…but, all bloody and shit. And the really freaky part… was that under him, in…blood, there was, like, a huge rectangle with a big heart and two A’s, like, you know… An ace card.” He swallowed and paused for a moment. “And, you know that… murder earlier this year with that card? I thought that the sick guy might still be there and ran out of there as fast as I could. And I even went to class, because I was so…braindead. I was even thinking that someone could have slipped drugs into my lunch or some crap to make me hallucinate. But…not now.”

“Have you told anyone else this?” I asked him quietly, sharing his shock.

He shook his head. “I’ve been too scared.” He murmured quietly.

“I think you should tell one of the police officers over there. They’ll be able to help, I’m sure of it.”

A look of guilt flashed across Matt’s face. “I- I feel bad for saying this, but what if I, like, become a suspect?”

I shook my head. “You wont, don’t worry. You didn’t do anything and you were never carrying a weapon right? You’ll be fine.” I said, trying to sound reassuring.

Matt nodded. “Could you come with me?” He asked.

“Sure.” I said, forcing a small smile.

While Matt explained what he saw to a police officer, I thought about the information that I just got. A card. Since Shawn was the Card Collector, it was definitely him, or someone that knew of him… as well as where he went to school. If it wasn’t Shawn, were they trying to imitate him in order to frame him or something, or send a kind of message? I thought back to what sort of card it was. An ace, right? An ace of hearts. I felt a cold put form in my stomach. Me, that represented me didn’t it? Now I desperately hoped that the culprit was Shawn, instead of someone who knew about Shawn and I, as well as the fact that Shawn had once planned to kill me.

“Excuse me young man.” The police officer’s voice snapped me back to reality.

“Yes?” I said softly, still shaken with what I just deducted.

The police looked at me with understanding. “If you could, please don’t tell any other students what you heard until it is made public.”

I nodded. “I understand. It would just make a panic if everyone found out right now.” I said.

The officer smiled. “Thank you.” He then turned to Matt. “I would like to ask you more questions about what you saw. If you don’t mind, could you come with me?”

Matt nodded. “I-I’ll see you Jake.” He said with a week smile, waving to me.

“Y-yeah.” I replied absently. As Matt was led away, I despondently began to trudge back slowly towards the cluster of students. However, I stopped in my tracks when my phone vibrated. Fuck! Did Shawn see or hear the whole thing!? I pulled my phone out.

Private Number: “What the hell did you just learn?!”

What the hell would Shawn do if he knew what happened? I swallowed hard; he would probably put me back into that underground luxury prison. Crap! I never wanted to go back there! I stood silently staring at the text, trying to figure out what to say. Shawn sent another text.

Private Number: “TELL ME.”

I was about to text back a lie, but stopped when I remembered the consequences of it. I thought for a moment, and concluded to tell Shawn about everything except the card for the time being.

Jake: “Matt saw the corpse of the P.E teacher hanging and bloody in the gym at lunch.”

I waited a few moments for Shawn to reply to my curt text. I just hoped that he wouldn’t kidnap for the sole fact that there was a murder…

Private Number: “WHAT ELSE.”

Shit. I was about to text that there wasn’t anything else, but halted when I realized that would be a major lie. I opted for just sticking my phone back into my pocket.

Ah, what the hell should I do? For the past minute my phone had been buzzing like crazy in my back pocket, and Shawn must have threatened to kill someone at least once. Shit, I really needed to tell him everything, didn’t I? I grabbed my phone out of my pocket and looked at the texts.

Private Number: “ANSWER ME.”

Private Number: “What did you find out to make you so scared?

Private Number: “Jake!”

Private Number: “LV is dead Jake. If you don’t tell RIGHT NOW, he’s OVER.”

I winced at the last text. Yup, that’s what I figured. I held my fingers hesitantly over the screen of my phone before I typed.

Jake: “I wont tell unless you promise not to abduct me.”

Private Number: “NO. Tell me what the fuck you learned in THE NEXT text or I WILL kill LV.”

I bit my lip nervously. What the hell was I supposed to do!? I sighed, I would just have to try and negotiate with Shawn after I told him.

Jake: “An ace of hearts was drawn in blood.”

I waited a few moments before Shawn texted back.

Private Number: “You’re getting into my car after we’re let go, got it?”

Fuck. That was what I was afraid of. He was planning on kidnapping me again…

Jake: “NO!”

Private Number: “I’m keeping you safe until I sort this out!”

Jake: “NO!!!!!!!!”

Private Number: “It’s obviously directed at me, and more importantly, YOU. And because you’re so easily kidnapped, I’m keeping you protected until I fix this.”

Jake: “Or until NEVER you fucking liar! You might never let me leave!”

Private Number: “I will.”

Jake: “You’re full of shit!!”

Private Number: “So?”

If Shawn were right in front of me I’d sock him in the fucking face! I hurriedly tried to think of some sort of alternative that would keep me out of confinement and also let Shawn feel like he was keeping me safe. An idea hit me, one that I didn’t like, but one that I like a fuck ton more than imprisonment.

Jake: “What if I let you stay at my house?”

Shawn texted back a few moments later.

Private Number: “I’m listening.”

Jake: “I would first tell my mom about what Matt told me, and then introduce her to you, but not have you be Shitty-Shawn, but someone I met this school year and bonded to more or less. I would say that after this year’s events you were scared to live alone and then ask her if you could stay with us and that you would pay for your own food.”

Private Number: “What if your friends come over and see me?”

I thought for a moment about that; they would recognize Shitty-Shawn right away…

Jake: “I want to avoid that, but if they ever find out, then I’ll make up some shit about how we made up, how you’re scared shitless, how none of your friends would accept you, and how you feel safer living with me because I’m the manliest fucking man on the planet.”

Private Number: “Fine. But only if I sleep in the same room as you.”

Yes! I resisted the urge to grin triumphantly. I wasn’t going back to the mother fucking underground prison! Yeah! My happiness died down when I remembered at what cost that came; Shawn, the most obsessive and skilled murderer ever, was going to live with me… and sleep in my room.

Jake: “You’re not going to watch me sleep right?”

Private Number: “lol Jake you’re hilarious, of course I’ll be watching you sleep!”

Yeah, that’s basically how I thought he’d answer. Fuck.
