"Then, he turned to me and asked, is that your cat? Of course, my brilliant answer was, no, it's Satan's cat. Not really my best move seeing as I was with a priest," Jaxon finished his story.
We were in tears from laughing so hard. I had to give it to him, Jaxon could tell a good story. "Apparently the concept of sarcasm was lost on him," I said.
"Good thing he wasn't talking to you then, Jaycee," Drake joked. We all laughed at that. Everyone knew I was the most sarcastic person around.
I was about to reply when the door to the stairwell opened and Wallace came in with Crystal in tow.
"I'm glad to see you four are working as hard as always," Wallace said when she saw us with our picnic.
"Of course! We wouldn't want to let you down now, would we?" Drake answered. Wallace chuckled as she came to a stop in front of us.
I looked passed her to Crystal. "What are you hiding Crystal?" I asked, a smile on my face.
"Well, I was cleaning out some stuff earlier when I found," she paused before bringing her hand out from behind her back, "This!"
My smile slowly faded as I looked at what Crystal was holding. When I didn't immediately jump up in excitement, Crystal's expression turned confused. "Thanks for the thought Crystal, but I don't play the guitar," I said quietly, a sad edge to my voice. Her face fell a little, but I knew she understood.
"Very well, I'll just leave it over here," she replied, leaning the guitar against the wall.
Old memories ran through my head as I looked at its battered form. It wasn't my most cared for guitar, but it was my favorite classical. At least, it was.
"Jaycee?" I looked over at Taylor who was standing in front of me. I could tell it wasn't the first time she called my name.
"Yeah?" I asked.
"Are you ready to go back to training?" she asked. Everyone else had already gone back to working out, even Wallace.
"Yes, let's go." I stood up from my seat, making sure to avoid looking at the guitar again.
----------
This was impossible.
I had been lying in bed for four hours, and I had yet to fall asleep. I couldn't take it anymore. I threw back my blankets and climbed out of bed. Since I had gone to sleep in nothing but an oversized t-shirt, I quietly snuck over to my locker. I put on my skinny jeans, a tank top, and my leather jacket, throwing on my boots as well. I put my piercings back in, knowing that if they were left out any longer, the holes would start closing.
After wearing this outfit every day for over two years, I had gotten used to it. It comforted me, having something familiar. My world had been turned upside down for the second time. Nothing was the same anymore. This was though, and it relaxed me.
I silently walked out of the dorm and into the main room. My intent was to go up to the roof, but as I was walking to the stairwell, something caught my eye. I looked over at my guitar, still leaning against the wall where Crystal had set it.
As if in a trance, I walked over to the guitar and picked it up. Then, I grabbed the ear pieces I was using earlier and turned on my music.
I laid down on the ground, my guitar resting in my lap. Music flooded my ears and I started strumming the guitar along to the song. The rooms were pretty much sound proof, so I didn't worry about waking anybody up. I looked at all the pictures on the wall in front of me. As one of my favorite songs came on, I closed my eyes, letting the music take over as I started singing along.
I lost track of how many songs I went through. I just kept my eyes closed, letting the music take over.
Halfway through a song, it changed. A country song started playing. I began playing along with it, still lost in my thoughts.
My eyes snapped open when I realized that the song hadn't changed on its own. I sat up and turned around, still playing the song.
My eyes locked on Jaxon's and I finally recognized the song from years ago.
Drake had accidentally let slip that I could play the guitar after I had specifically asked him not to tell. Jaxon, being who he was, pestered me to no end to play him a song. After literally three straight hours of him poking me in the arm saying, "Play me a song," I gave in. I grabbed my guitar and told him to pick a song.
His face lit up like a kid on Christmas morning. He tapped his finger against his chin, pretending to think really hard about his song choice. Finally, he got a huge cheesy smile on his face and said, "You Belong With Me by Taylor Swift."
I raised a questioning eyebrow at him, but started playing anyways. Our eyes locked as I sang, a huge smile on both of our faces. When I finished, he shrugged and said, "You're alright." I rolled my eyes, and, laughing, Jaxon pulled the guitar out of my lap before pulling me onto his and lightly kissing me.
I could tell that memory was playing in Jaxon's mind as well as I looked into his eyes. I sang the last line and the music from my earpiece shut off. We just kept staring at each other in silence.
"I thought you didn't play the guitar?"
My head snapped in the direction of the voice. All the recruits were standing there, watching me.
"I don't," I stated coldly. I stood up, putting the guitar on the ground. Pulling the earpiece from my ear, I quickly walked past the recruits.
"Jay!" Jaxon called out, but I just kept walking. I typed in the code and the door to the stairwell opened up. I waited until the door closed behind me to wipe the stray tear that fell down my cheek.
----------
I paused with my hand on the door handle. I really shouldn't have stormed off like that, especially with Trujillo after us. I just needed to get out of there.
No point in delaying the inevitable. I opened the door.
"Where did you go?" Taylor shouted at me.
I just sighed, walking through and closing the door behind me. "Out."
"Out where?" Drake asked.
"To get some air," I replied.
"For six hours?" Taylor yelled, going to stand by Drake so both of them blocked my path to the dorm. Jaxon was wisely staying out of this fight, standing off to the side and silently observing.
"Yes, for six hours!" I yelled. I took a deep breath, before saying calmly, "I needed to get out of here. I'm sorry for running off. I'm back now, and it's not going to happen again."
Taylor and Drake looked at each other before turning back to me. "You better keep your promise and never do that again!" Drake said. I nodded and Taylor continued with, "Now go get changed. Training starts in ten minutes."
They stepped out of my way and I said, "Yes mother." I chuckled and walked passed, heading for the dorm. I heard Taylor muttering about how big of a pain I was in her backside, making my smile grow.
----------
"We are going to be doing something different today." I stood in front of the recruits in my usual attire of sweats and a long sleeve shirt. I could see the curiosity on their faces at the mention of doing something new. "After my little..." I paused, thinking of what to call it, "Walk this morning, I realized I probably wasn't the only one itching to get out of this hole in the ground."
The recruits nodded their heads in reply, so I continued, "We are going on a reconnaissance mission. It's going to teach you how to blend in with your surroundings, go unnoticed, and gather information on your target." They looked very excited about the training.
"Here's how it's going to work, I will assign you each a character. You will become that character, donning the clothes and personality of them. You will go where I instruct you and wait for my signal. I'm going to pick a target and I want you to gather as much information on this person as you can. Follow them if need be, but do not blow your cover.
"Reconnaissance is the most important job a secret agent can have. Information can be gathered from a computer, but it isn't necessarily true. Information gathered from observing is far more reliable."
I paused, letting what I said sink in. "So," Victoria said, "What are our characters going to be?"
"I'm glad you asked Victoria," I said, a smirk on my face. Next to me, Jaxon muttered uh-oh, causing Drake to chuckle and my smirk to grow.
----------
"Is this really necessary?" Victoria asked.
"Yes," I reply. "Now, scoot closer to Aaron." I hid a chuckle as Victoria did as I said.
Victoria and Aaron were playing a lovey-dovey high school couple and sitting under a tree in the park having a picnic. Josh and Anna were pretending to be a brother and sister hanging out. Jennifer and Stacey were walking the open mall right next to the park. Austin was pretending to be a homeless man sleeping in the alleyway behind a store.
I really loved this training exercise.
"Austin, stop moving! You are supposed to be sleeping," I say into the com in my ear. Next to me, Drake chuckles.
We were sitting at a table outside an ice cream shop. Drake and Taylor were cuddling; their chairs so close a piece of paper wouldn't for between them. Jaxon was sitting in between Taylor and I, and I had my feet propped up on the chair in between Jaxon and me.
"Something funny?" I ask Drake politely.
"You seem to be enjoying yourself, little sister," he says.
I smile innocently and reply, "I have no idea what you're talking about."
"Sure you don't," Jaxon says.
A smirk finds its way onto my lips and I shrug my shoulders in a "what can I say" manner. I scoop another spoonful of ice cream into my mouth and go back to scanning the area around me.
Finally, I see what I was looking for, or rather, who I was looking for.
"Target acquired."
