"Oh my gosh! You shot him!" Victoria screeched. The others were freaking out as well, though I noticed with amusement that none of them made a move to help Jaxon.
"Why on earth would you shoot someone?" Josh asked, rather loudly seeing as we were still in the small stairwell and the sound travelled.
"You didn't even blink! You just shot him in cold blood!" Austin exclaimed.
"Would you all stop talking and calm down already?" I asked, annoyance creeping into my voice.
"How are we supposed to calm down? You just killed somebody!" Victoria squealed.
I just rolled my eyes and put the gun back into the holster inside my jacket. Taking the couple steps forward to where Jaxon had finally stopped sliding down the stairs, I turned him over so he was on his back. "He's not dead," I stated simply. His hand fell from his chest to reveal the dart protruding out of it.
"But... What... No... You... You shot him?" Victoria said, not sounding very sure.
"I shot him with my dart gun, not my real gun. He is just unconscious," I said. "Your faith astounds me with its magnitudes by the way," I added sarcastically.
"Oh come on Carter! That's not really fair. With all the secrets and tempers and unknown visitors lately, how are we supposed to know what's going on?" Aaron asked defensively.
Instead of responding to him, I said, "Josh, Austin, Aaron; pick him up."
They didn't look sure about that, but moved passed me to do as I asked anyways. I walked back to the door at the bottom of the staircase and typed in the code. The lock clicked and I swung open the door. I walked in and turned around to find them all still in the stairwell looking at me.
"Well, are you coming or not?" That got them into motion. "Wait right there," I said, pointing to the empty area in front of the curtain. I walked over to the storage closet and took out a chair and rope before heading back over to where they were all standing, staring at the room in awe.
"I never even knew this was down here," Aaron said.
"You were never supposed to," I stated. I set the chair up so that it was facing the black curtain. "Set him in the chair," I told the guys.
"What?" Austin asked, shock clouding their features. I cocked my eyebrow at them and they picked him back up and set him on the chair.
"Good. Now sit over there." I hooked a finger over my shoulder at the ground behind me.
"On the ground? But I'll get my clothes dirty!" Victoria squealed.
I looked at all their expensive business clothes and a smirk found its way onto my face. "What a tragedy."
Looking very unhappy, Victoria sat down with everyone else. Picking up the rope from where I had set it earlier, I walked over to Jaxon and tied his hands together behind his back. Then, I took his gun and all his other weapons before going back to the storage closet, setting his stuff in there, and taking out another chair. I walked back out and set it up so that it was facing Jaxon.
"What are you doing?" Victoria asked. I glanced over at her to see that she was the only one looking at me. Everyone else was still looking around at the training bunker.
Without replying, I looked down at my watch before focusing back on Jaxon. I sat down on the chair and crossed my legs. Jaxon peeled his eyes open just after I folded my hands in my lap and looked back up at him.
"Well, aren't you a sight for sore eyes," he croaked out.
I didn't say anything, just kept my expression blank as I looked at him.
"Come on, Jay. Just one little word?"
"You held a real gun yesterday."
His face transformed into one of confusion before understanding took over. "So, you got my message."
"How long have you been surveying us?"
"I thought you would. You were always smarter than the average bear," he said, ignoring my question.
I decided to play his game. "A month? Two months? A year?"
"I always admired that about you, your intelligence that is."
"Who are you working with?"
"That wasn't the only thing I liked, obviously," he said.
"Why did you inform me?"
"I also liked your-" I stood up and kicked my chair back, making it fly back in the process. I pulled the gun out from my pants and put it against his temple.
"I will ask you one more time, Steele. How long have you been surveying AMF?" I asked, my voice threatening.
"You wouldn't shoot me."
I switched off the safety and cocked the gun. In a low voice, I said, "You haven't known me for a long time. You have no idea what I'm capable of."
The cocky smile he had on since he woke up finally fell. A sad smile took its place and he explained, "You know that I wouldn't show up here if I wasn't on your side and you know I will always be on your side." I cocked my eyebrow at the last part of that statement, but didn't say anything. "As far as I've been able to tell, they've been watching you for two months. You already know who."
I listened to what he was telling me. Thinking about it for a minute, I realized he had a point. Finally, I put the safety on and slid the gun back into my pants.
"Does this mean you're going to untie me now?"
I smirked as I turned around and picked up the fallen chair. "You've been out of those ropes since you opened your eyes."
As I walked towards the closet, I heard a soft chuckle from behind me before he said, "Gosh, I've missed you Jay."
I just put the chair back where it was supposed to go and grabbed his stuff before going back out. He was winding the rope up when I got out there. I tossed him his stuff and he put everything back in its place.
He looked at me a second before saying, "So, now-" He was cut off by the sound of the door to the stairwell unlocking. I grabbed the gun from where it was tucked into my pants and Jaxon did the same. We both turned towards the door, our guns raised.
The door opened and Wallace stepped through. "Oh, lower those guns will you? You're going to give me a heart attack!"
We put our guns back and I said, "Sorry Wallace, we just weren't expecting you."
Jaxon just exclaimed, "Xavier! Come here boy!" Wallace dropped Xavier's leash and the bulldog ran at him. I heard intakes of breaths from behind me where everyone was still sitting, watching us. Xavier just ran up to him and licked Jaxon's face as he scratched his head.
Wallace ignored Jaxon and replied to me saying, "Oh, of course you didn't expect me. Why would I show up to where the rest of my team is meeting? It's not like I am part of it or anything."
"Was that sarcasm Wall-"
"How's my buddy doing? Is he doing well?" Jaxon asked Xavier as the dog licked his face.
Wallace and I both looked at them before I said, "Get a room, would ya?"
Jaxon looked at me with a smirk before saying, "Jealous?"
I smirked too and kneeled down on the ground before saying, "Why would I be jealous? He likes me better." Then, I turned to Xavier and said, "Isn't that right boy?" Xavier left Jaxon and came running over to me.
"Wait, he's the "we" you were talking about?" Jennifer asked, speaking for the first time since arriving here.
"Yes," I said a little coldly. I stood up, grabbing Xavier's leash and leading him over to his old pen next to the curtained wall.
"Hey, what's this?" I turned back around to see that Austin had stood up from the floor and pulled back part of the curtain. He pulled it back the rest of the way and everyone stood up to look at the pictures.
My eyes widened and I froze. They weren't supposed to see that.
They were looking at all the different generations of agents and the shenanigans that my brother and Jaxon had pulled.
When Austin got bored of looking at the pictures, he walked over to the projector sitting on a rolling cart. He turned it on and it started playing. Everyone stopped looking at the pictures to watch the video.
*Three years ago*
"Remember what I taught you?" Jaxon asked.
I rolled my eyes and said, "No, I didn't catch it after the fifty times you went over it. Maybe the fifty-first time's the charm."
"How the heck does this thing work?" We both looked over at my brother who was messing with the camera in his hands, trying to figure out how to turn it on.
We both chuckled as we looked back at each other. "Come on then smart-ass; let's see what you got," Jaxon called.
I smirked and raised my fists to block my face as Jaxon did the same. We started sparring, him punching and kicking with me blocking for the most part. Then, I got tired of that and I kicked my leg out, swiping his feet out from under him. He hit the ground, but pulled me down with him. He rolled so that he was over the top of me, his hands on either side of my head, his face inches from my own. "You're getting closer," he said with a smirk.
Instead of replying, I gripped his wrist and hit his elbow with my other hand. His arm buckled and I rolled over so that I was above him. We traded a couple more times, each of us fighting for the upper hand.
Finally, I pinned him. I was sitting on his midsection and his arms were pinned beneath me. I flicked my hair out of my face and looked down at him. We were both breathing heavily, our hearts pounding in our chests.
I looked down at him, a victorious smile on my face. He looked back at me, his face one of awe. "Gosh, you're beautiful," he whispered, still staring up at me.
My victorious smile turned into a smirk as I asked, "Is this the part where I say you're beautiful too?"
He rolled his eyes, a smirk on his face, before a genuine smile took over and he said, "No, it's where you say I love you."
My smile turned genuine as I said, "I love you, Jaxon."
"I love you too, Jay." Then, he lifted his head up and kissed me.
"I didn't think I was paying you to make out on my training mats." We both laughed as we looked up to see Wallace walk in.
"Sorry Wallace," I said, moving to get off of Jaxon.
"No..." Jaxon groaned, moving his hands to my hips to keep me in place and burying his face in my neck. I laughed and pushed him back down to the mat. His hands fell to his sides and he sighed as I climbed off.
"If you two are done, why don't you get back to training?" Wallace said.
"Well then, how 'bout you come show me how it's done?" I asked with a smirk.
Jaxon chuckled as he got off the mats and went to sit down next to Drake. "This outta be good!"
Drake chuckled and said, "I just wish I could get this thing working so I could video it!"
"Alright then old lady, let's see what you got!" I called as I put my fists up, mirroring Wallace's.
The camera jiggled and Drake said, "Hey! I think I got-"
The projector clicked off as the video ended. I was still frozen in place as I stared at the now blank wall. Everyone was silent.
"Carter..." Austin began, probably about to apologize.
I unfroze and quickly walked over to the projector. Ignoring the stares of everyone in the room, I unplugged the cords and wound them up before putting them back on the cart. I wheeled it to the storage closet and closed the door behind me so that I was in there alone.
Putting the cart in its place, I turned to the door and paused with my hand on the handle. I rested my forehead against the cool metal and took a deep breath. No one was supposed to see that. They weren't supposed to see any of it. Not the pictures, not the video, and definitely not the bunker. But now they have seen all of it.
I took another deep breath and wiped the one escaped tear from my cheek. Then, I raised my head and walked out of the closet.
They were all staring at me as I came out and strode back over to them. Everyone was silent when I came to stand in front of them. "So, wait, you two were a thing?" Victoria asked.
I pulled the gun from inside my jacket and pointed it at Victoria. "You have not stopped talking since you got here. I recommend you stop now before I do something I'm not going to regret." Victoria gulped, nodding as she did so, and I slid my gun back into the holster. From the look on her face, she thought it was the real gun, not the dart gun. It didn't matter to me what she thought, though.
"Now, sit down," I commanded. They all sat back down where they had been before. Jaxon grabbed his chair and set it up for Wallace before leaning against the wall behind her. I crossed my arms and looked at their faces one by one. "This is what you need to know."
