"What do you think this meetings about?" I asked Mason as we ran to a clearing in the middle of the territory where the Alpha held meetings and such. He didn't reply making me anxious. Who was speaking to Mason before the alpha announced the meeting? As we passed by many fellow pack members, I couldn't help but feel frightened.
Our Alpha barely held meetings. Actually the last meeting we had was for the members of our pack that had died in a war that took place over two years ago. And even then it wasn't worse than this.
Kids were crying clinging onto their parents as if they were saying a goodbye. The males a bit older than Mason and I had backpacks on with solemn expressions. The Alpha was up front with Beta George speaking to some trackers.
"I'll be right back," muttered Mason as he walked over to the Alpha. I glanced around and found Rose looking around too. She caught my eye and we both met half way. "What is going on?"
I shrugged feeling quite worried myself. Rose must have noticed Mason wasn't with me, so she asked where he is. I nodded in the direction Mason was in, talking with the Alpha. Her eyes lingered on Mason before diverting her eyes to mine.
"I think something bad is about to happen," Rose trailed off looking around uneasy. I gave her the curious eye.
"Why would you say that?"
"I heard my father and mother talking about something last night. Something serious. The only thing I heard was-"
"Everyone settle down." We all gathered closer to Alpha Brayton. He waited until everyone was silent. Two tense minutes later he began addressing the anxious crowd.
"As most of you might know already the rivalry between Blue Bloods and Dark Moons pack has been getting worse lately. To top it off the Alpha of the Dark Moons pack has requested my presence and make an agreement for the sake of the two packs. But I don't feel as if this would be safe for the pack seeing as the Dark Moons pack does not make agreements. I refused his offer and he will most likely force his way into this territory for war."
Everyone gasped at the thought of a war against the Dark Moons pack. The population of that pack was about 300 while our pack had around 180 wolves. We wouldn't stand a chance against them.
"Which is why we attack first."
The crowd roared in disbelief. Alpha Brayton crossed his arms over his chest as everyone around him spoke out their complaints.
"Alpha, We don't stand a chance!" Exclaimed a women near me.
This was not right. Alpha Brayton always put his pack first and never in danger. What the hell is he trying to do?
"Silence," his voice held a command. Every person stopped to hear him out. "I've already assembled the group that will accompany me to the Dark Moons pack."
I couldn't help but snap my head into the direction where Mason was standing staring at his feet as if they were the most interesting thing. He looked up feeling my gaze but then diverted his gaze elsewhere. From the look he gave me before he set his eyes on something else gave me my answer.
NO! I shouted at him opening the mind link between us. I could practically feel the guilt washing off of him in major waves.
Is this why you've been training more than usual?
For the past few days Mason had been staying up as long as he can constantly training with the older men of our pack. I would ask why he wouldn't stop training because we were safe but he would just reply with: better to be prepared rather than unlucky.
"We leave tomorrow during sunset," he continued interrupting our conversation. From the corner of my eye I saw Mason nod. I knew fully well he was answering my question.
But-
Instead of listening to what he had to say I shut him out. A wave hit me so hard when I realized that I might never get to see Mason again. I didn't know whether to cry or hit him for keeping this away from me. I caught a glimpse of movement to my right and remembered Rose was standing next to me. Before I knew it she was walking up to Mason with her head held high and eyes that could make anyone squirm in their seat. Her hand made contact with Masons chest as she slapped him. Mason kept his head low as every head turned to observe what was happening.
"I can't believe you didn't tell me." If I wasn't a werewolf I wouldn't have been able to hear since Rose practically whispered it. Mason opened his mouth to respond but closed it probably thinking better of it.
"Say something!" Rose demanded, placing her hands on her hips.
"Rosaline please discuss this elsewhere," Alpha Brayton stated. "That is all."
He began walking away as if nothing was about to happen. As if he wasn't putting lives on the line in a battle we obviously wouldn't win.
"Why didn't you tell me!" The first words Rose and I said to Mason as soon as we all arrived at his place. I glanced at her the same time she did. You could probably tell that Rose and I cared a lot for Mason. We've all been through thick and thin even though Mason and Rose met each other two months ago. She was a rogue and had accidently stumbled into pack territories, her parents also, with multiple injuries and Mason just so happened to be on night duty. Lets just say when he first saw, she was the most breath-taking girl he'd ever lay his eyes on.
"I'm sorry," he says keeping his eyes on Rose but diverted his eyes towards me, "Both of you."
Mason sighed wrapping his arms around Rose as if I wasn't here. He pressed soft kisses on her cheek and on the mark he gave her. Soon enough you could hear Roses sniffling. Mason tightened his grip on her slowly moving his hand up and down on her back.
"Don't go," I began walking towards the door trying to give the two mates privacy. "I need you."
I need him too, I think. I walk down the stairs and stay there until Mason comes down.
"Where is Rose?" I ask him. Mason walks down the stairs without Rose by his side.
"I put her in my bed," was all he said before he wrapped his arms around me. He placed his forehead on top of my head. Words didn't need to be spoken in order for me to realize how upset he is. He was basically my brother and I didn't want to lose a brother especially in a fight like this.
"No matter what happens you need to know I love you," he stated, "you know that right?"
I nodded just as my mom mind linked me. Sweetie, come home. It's getting dark.
Just a few minutes mom, I reply.
"Mom needs you?" Mason guessed. I nodded telling him that I have a few minutes. I spent a little while with him before reluctantly leaving. And when I say it like that I mean Mason had to actually push me out of his house because I wouldn't leave. We spent a lot of time chasing each other like cat and dog before he was finally able to get a hold of me. We act like annoying siblings so much.
By the time I arrived at my home all I wanted to do was lock myself in my room and cry myself to sleep. I would have been able to do that if my mom had not catched me halfway to my room. Damn werewolf hearing.
"Annabel, come here," she said. I walked into the kitchen where my mom was cooking something I did not want to pay any attention to. I walked right into her arms taking in a deep breath. She patted my hair down since she was a bit taller than me. I am an exact replica of her and sometimes it freaked me out how alike we were. She tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear the same time I did it which made me smile.
I got my facial features from my mom; including her love of the sunset. I got my hair color and my stubborn side from my dad who was not in the house at the moment. He was the Alphas top tracker and he was constantly busy helping the Alpha with things.
"I know how you feel sweetie," she mumbled. I shook my head. She didn't know how I felt. Having someone you care about so much leave on a suicide mission. She just doesn't know. I glance at her waiting to explain. Instead of explaining she changes the topic.
"Come eat," she says motioning to the food on the table, "You are probably hungry and your father should be here by now." I noticed a sad expression take over her face at the mention of my father but I didn't pay much attention to that.
I shook my head heading to my room. I was not happy for tomorrow.
I changed into my night clothes and glanced at the picture beside my bed. It was a picture of Mason and I when we were both 5 years of age. Mason had his arm over my shoulder while sporting the biggest grin possible. I was frowning but I remember why. Mason was constantly putting his arm over my shoulder and while our parents thought it was cute, I just thought it was downright annoying.
I flipped on my side resting my head on my pillow. Normally I'd be knocked out by the time I even touch my bed but now I was just dreading tomorrow.
