Chapter 39 – Harrison ‘Wolf’ Colt POV
Shell-shocked, my wolf whined, a part of myself I had otherwise ignored, cracked, further more, my eyes staring where Logan once was, darting back to the picture of the girl in the photo. Mine. Both mine. No. I stumbled back. Impossible. I had to get out of here; I couldn’t be in the room with that picture and his scent. I couldn’t think there, so leaving my office I bounded right into North – our Treasurer – but one look at my face stopped his words and he averted his eyes as I left. Storming down, I went to the bar, I needed a drink, that was what I needed, and for all these fuckers to stop gawking at me.
How didn’t I see it before? The question slipped into my mind, infuriating me, the glass in my hand breaking around my fist. “Oy Wolf, Boss – the fuck?” one of my men questioned backing off when I turned my glare on him. She’s gone. Another thought hit me, knocking the air out of my lungs. I jabbed my hand behind the bar, grabbing the Jack Daniels, and heading back to my office, drinking from the bottle, enjoying the burn as the brown liquid slipped hot, down my throat. The stinging heat, I liked, I held onto it, I savored it; my pacing turned into stumbling, while I drank and avoided the picture on the table. The more I drank the more the similarities shouted out at me. The more hurt I felt, until the anger was boiling inside me, but I couldn’t stand to take it out on anyone.
Years. For years he had searched for his sister. I had met him nearly five years ago, showing me a picture of some eight year old. My eight year old, the thought strange, wrong. He was wrong. I thought lying on the floor, turning my head unsteadily to the side to drink the last of my bottle of Jack, “Fwuk,” I cursed when it fell missing my mouth, my tongue darting out to catch it, “Nush wime,” I slurred my head rolling to the side.

Carla Ryan POV
Crushed, Tony and I left the Luna and Alpha’s office, their guard walking us to the door, then another walking us to the gate. Silently I stood outside, I didn’t know when Kieran would be returning but I would wait for him. My face still pinched, Marlon walked up to the gates, “What is the matter?” he asked folding his arms at his chest. While I would have rather Tony remained silent, just speaking quietly to Kieran he decided to answer Marlon.
“They are children Marlon! They’ve moved our child into their home, without so much as seeking our approval!” he growled, Marlon nodded slowly but his eyes I could tell were not on our side, “I think you should step back, and see this from my own perspective, because from where I am standing I support the Luna and Alpha asking Kieran to move in here especially since all we’ve shown them is that we do not deserve to live here. Under my own nose someone was being abused here, and two of the abusers came from your own home,” Marlon said.
“Do you know the history of our Luna?” he asked not giving us a chance, “I’m not surprised that she has taken Kieran under her wing when she was beaten to within an inch of her life when she was just a child. Further more, you as parents cannot control Kieran, I as someone in charge could not order or command Kieran. The Luna and Alpha will be able to do that; they will offer him a safe environment and rules that will in the long run keep him safe. As a parent, I would look to that fact, where will my child be safe? In my home where I cannot control him and the other strong personalities of my other children will end in clashes?” I glanced at Tony, his arms against his own chest unbending, but for a moment, thinking of the safety of all my children, I could understand.
“Connor is infuriated – his reasons valid to an extent, his wolf thinking solely of his mate – Kieran would fight back if agitated, if this were my children…” he paused his hands falling at his side, “I would be happy that someone thought far enough ahead to ensure the safety of all my children. They are protecting Kieran, he has enough rage to kill Connor if attacked-”
“So you’re saying we should thank them for taking our child?”
I shook my head thinking of which child would survive a fight with one another, Connor whose wolf would be released and fighting for his mate, or Kieran? Shying away from the horrendous thought, of which child, my vision blurred.
“That is not all…” Marlon said coming closer, “Kieran is unable to shift back to his wolf form, I believe that is a greater-”
I shook my head, “Wait what?” I couldn’t understand.
“Under the Luna’s order Kieran had to shift to his human form. When that happened his wolf decided for him, that he should remain in his human form. If attacked, I am unsure Kieran would be able to shift and defend himself…” my eyes widened nodding dazed, I looked back at the house we were just booted from, my own legs feeling like jelly. I still had hope, that over time we would be able to form some sort of relationship with our child, Kieran was kidnapped and hurt, I understood that but the child we got back was not my little boy. It took time to adjust but I did so, with a heavy heart, I believed that one day I would be something to him once again. Not just a lost memory.
“She was looking out for him,” I whispered, “And the Luna and Alpha do not need our permission to do so, I have been very lax in how I handled everyone on the island because I was not a true Alpha, this is different, and for the safety of everyone I wish others would realize that and not question their authority,” he shook his head sighing his arms falling to his side, “I even had to talk to my Justine about her behavior last night at the gathering. She sought out my approval – and as her father I respect that – but when called by the Luna to come forth there shouldn’t have been any hesitancy in her movements,” he shook his head.
“I need to go,” he said as the gate opened, trudging up, leaving Tony and I alone, “if he can’t shift back to his wolf, all the more reason for us to have him at home,” Tony muttered as the gate closed once again. The minute the words left his mouth my stomach churned, and I spun to face him, I opened my mouth to speak, to shout but nothing came out, closing it, I took a step back shaking my head. “Carla, dear, what’s wrong?”
‘So before you can fix the attitudes of your children currently living with you, you want to bring Kieran in so they can continue to torment him while under your roof?’ I repeated the Luna’s words. “Kieran was taken and tortured and Connor still participated in teasing him Tony, why would he do something like that? He knew that Kieran would attack if bothered and touched but he still took part… and now… Even Tera said it. He doesn’t think it’s his fault, or that Taryn is to blame, to him Kieran is in the wrong solely,” I said answering my own question of how she knew how Connor felt.
The Luna didn’t, but she did know that Kieran couldn’t shift back to his wolf to defend himself, that shield he had as a wolf, to protect him self from others was gone now. I hated to think about it, I hated to even have to worry that my child, that Connor wouldn’t use that piece of information to finally teach Kieran the lesson he thought he deserved, but the truth was after this morning… I wasn’t so sure. All my ire left, my body drooped onto Tony.
His arms encircled my body, rubbing over my back, “They could’ve asked us,” He said still adamant but most of his fire was gone as well, “Carla? Tony?” I heard from behind spinning out of Tony’s arm to see Kieran in black shorts and a black sleeveless undershirt, but the items in his hand made my heart sink, fill and break all at once, a dirtied blanket.
His baby blanket, muddied, ripped in a few places as far as I could tell, but he was bringing it with him down here. He had it up on that mountain, even though he couldn’t remember –
“Why are you here?” he asked almost defensively. I smiled tight, and before Tony could answer I did, “we just came to make sure you settled in alright Kieran,” it hurt to say the words, my heart pounding, as he nodded slowly. “We came earlier but the Luna said you went to get your things from the mountain,” I eyed the dirtied blanket, “I could – if you’d like, wash it for you?” he shook his head, “I can do it now.” Again I smiled.
I didn’t know how to do this, it seemed that we were always walking away in Kieran’s life… “Hey – oh hi Mrs. Ryan, Mr. Ryan,” I heard from behind us and flickered my eye to Oakley, her hair braided in one, a flowered sundress and walking boot on her leg. Tote bag on her side, my eyes went back to Kieran, jealous of the small smile that she was able to put there, and with so little effort. “Chelsea said you were here… thought I’d come see your new cave,” she said her eyes on Kieran, a natural hopeful smile on her face. And the bitterness I felt eased when I realized, remembered that in all our time here, we had never once taken on our own to see just where Kieran had made his home. “We’d love to see where you’re going to be staying Kieran also,” I murmured, and watched as the small smile that played on his lips dropped and that coldness in his eyes when he regarded Tony and I came forward.
A stiff nod, he turned and the gate opening, Oakley followed, heading to the backyard, “Hey Little Boss,” Oakley said to the little girl on the porch swing, she jumped off, coming to stand right in front of Kieran, “Hi, I Ava,” her small hand pointing to her chest, Kieran just looked down at her, “She wants you to tell her your name,” he eyed Oakley, “I’m Kieran.”
“Ava, lunch,” a woman came out, calling the little girl, she looked over her shoulder then back, waving before leaving, “Bye-bye Kieran,” she called. “She likes you,” Oakley said in a singsong type voice, and Kieran looked at her, his eyes going cold, and oddly instead of flinching back, Oakley laughed, “Don’t worry I think the only person she bosses around here is Casey,” she said after having a good laugh. “To your cave mountain king,” she said her eyes sparkling, “lets go,” Kieran answered. Tony and I hung back to watch him, amazed that he didn’t race up the stairs instead, went slowly, keeping less than five stairs between him and Oakley, his posture stiff only relaxing when she was on the top landing, to the right the door opened and out came Walter Rykos, two little children, replicas of him, “Kieran,” he greeted my son politely, nodding at Oakley in respect, then going on his way.
Down the hallway, the white walls bare, every thirty or forty feet a door, we went to the last door on the hall, Kieran opened it, “this is where I’ll be staying,” he murmured, standing aside as Oakley entered. The cream walls, a full-sized bed and wooden table against the wall, “Cool,” she pointed to his bed, “Well now you have a bed and it’s facing a pretty cool view of the island,” she went to the large wall window turning her head each way. Deciding to remain silent, I looked about, as Kieran put his dirtied blanket on the table; a canvas painting of Oakley on top caught my attention. He has a picture of her? How don’t they know they are mates? My mate and I question each other simultaneously.
“There’s a library here? Do you want to go there?” Oakley asked bringing me back; I slowly stepped out of his room pulling Tony with me. “If you want,” I heard Kieran answer shocked, I knew he didn’t know how to read; but I went back the way we came silently leaving this house for the second time today. But this time, was slightly different because I had more facts, more answers. “I don’t think we can hold onto memories Tony,” I said as we walked home, each deep in our own thoughts, “He’s – Kieran isn’t a little boy, we won’t get him back, we just have to make new memories…” I said nodding to myself, thinking of the dirtied blanket he brought down with him right now. He doesn’t remember so much, but what he did remember, he was holding onto it.
“We are the reason it’s so strained, we want him to remember what we were to him, but she doesn’t…” he stopped walking, “Who?”
“Oakley,” I said her name with no real resentment, just honesty, “They fucked with our son and his memories… he doesn’t remember us, but we keep trying to bring him back. But you know what I just realized? To make him remember us, we force him to recollect what was done to him, we don’t know exactly what happened…”

Chelsea POV
While the others in the room seemed to be here for protection, their eyes filled with caution, I did not read that from Marlon. Disappointment. Betrayal. Philip however didn’t note that, he was still spewing, “You have to be willing to give up your true mate for them, I couldn’t do that. I wouldn’t so we had to go on the run, I had to disappear, and Judy came with me. Two years later she was pregnant and Jason found us, saved us. We – I couldn’t let you know who I was, you’d send me back, I had my family to worry about,” he said to Marlon, more than to Gabriel and I.
“She innocent in all of this, I swear,” he waved his hands about turning to Gabriel finally, “I’ll tell you anything you want – all of what I know and I can remember and I have with me,” he backed away, running to the couch in his sitting area, turning it over slowly, ripping the bottom of the couch off and reaching in, “hey – hey-” Gabriel shouted, turning his gun back on Judy, “No – No it’s information I took with me,” he pulled his hand out from inside the couch lifting them in the air. Nonno lowered his gun as he went to the couch, dipping his hand and coming back with a small bag. Opening it, he held out documents, as thick as his finger and then three floppy disks. I snorted, floppy disks?
To my left Logan appeared, startled I took a step back, he took in the room, before his eyes fell on Judy who was cradling her ankle, the shot removed, blood saturating the floor and her pants, but she had her lips held tightly in her mouth. Tears dripping down her face, she was hurt but at the moment, it wasn’t even directed at Gabriel and he was the one that shot her, no Judy was looking at Philip. He worked with those – those monsters? Her mind was reeling in everything, memory after memory, hurt building worse, when I realized just what was bothering her, “Seventeen years together… you knew what those Elders did to my family, you – you were one of them? How did you – you hid that from me?” her words laced with hate, anger and just sheer pain, that was nothing compared to her gun wound. But she wasn’t the only one feeling that way, Marlon felt it as well, hiding out here as though he were one of them here on the island, people that had to walk away from their home and family and hide from the Elders, when in reality Philip Pascal? He was running from those he once helped hiding with those like the people he hurt…
“We ran facial recognition on your face…” I blurted out, “We didn’t find anything – nothing!” he looked from his mate, I’m sorry; I’m so sorry Judy. His eyes pained, “As an Unseen they do everything in their power to never have anything trace back to you, nothing about you is changed, you kill someone, it’s already taken care of before you make it to the place they told you to call home.”
“Who takes the blame if caught?” Gabriel asked, lowering his gun, while the others still had their pointed. “Humans…” the Devotees, Philip answered as though it were the most obvious thing in the world. “The Elders keep track of wrong doings, of everyone. Pictures, recordings, and when the time is right, they give humans options. Everyone finds out what they have on you, or you take the fall for something, you have a debt that needs to be settled so your family is left alone? They will settle it for you…”
“As a Unseen though, you can’t have anything to hold you back, no family, no friends, nothing… if they tell you to have children and settle down, they expect that you would sacrifice those same children for them… you are puppets, I had lived that way for a long time,” I left behind a family, “What?” I blurted out once again, when I heard that thought, just as I was feeling somewhat sympathetic to his situation. My eyes flew to Judy, had she heard him think that as well? No he’s blocking his thoughts from her now, Gabriel answered me and better at hiding his shock. “How did you hide your thoughts from your mate? Hide who you were for so long?” I questioned.
“I never once thought of who I was before her, I wasn’t anyone – I was nothing before Judy, just a puppet, an actor, I played roles, but with Judy,” he turned to face her, “With you I was living, I had a life and a reason, and I should have let you go, but you were mine. It was easier to give half truths, tell you that they were after me for another reason,” I blinked, unsure what to do with Philip, did we kill him? Was Judy, Jade, Taryn and Meadow the act now? Was he playing a role?
