Jenna and Hudayfah strolled hand and hand down the sidewalk, both of them holding smoothies that they had gotten after their movie. It had been an amazing night, and part of her wished it wasn't over. They had eaten dinner at The Hard Rock Café, before going to the theater and watching a romantic comedy called Failure To Launch. After that they had stopped at Jamba Juice for their treats, and were now walking back to where their limo was waiting for them.
As they came to a stop at the crosswalk, Jenna snuck a peek at Hudayfah who was trying to suck up the last of his smoothie, and smiled. Sticking to the whole 'date' concept, Hudayfah had actually left the house and rang the doorbell to 'pick' her up for it. He had had a bouquet of red roses with him, and had given them to her while making a short bow, dropping a kiss on her hand, and complimenting her outfit. It had been a wonderful evening, and it had made her just a tad bit fonder of him.
"Why are you staring at me?" he asked a bit self-consciously, and she blushed slightly at being discovered.
"I was just thinking about how nice tonight was."
"You sound surprised."
"Well, with the way everything has been going between us, I wasn't sure what to expect."
He squeezed her hand gently.
"InshaAllah this will be a fresh start for us."
"There is one thing though." She said, and he looked at her questioningly.
"What?"
"Is Rami going to come on all of our dates with us?"
Hudayfah burst out laughing as they turned around and looked at where Rami was trailing a few feet behind them. He had his headphones in, and was eating frozen yogurt, but when he saw them looking at him, he stuck the spoon in his mouth and waved.
"He's just here to watch out for us."
She frowned slightly.
"Like a bodyguard?"
He hesitated before nodding.
"Yes. After what happened yesterday, I want to take extra precautions."
She nodded, and as the light turned green, they began to walk.
"I wanted to ask you about that."
"About what?"
"About why you freaked out?"
His hand tightened slightly in her own.
"Because I couldn't find you."
"You know I would never leave without telling you. Why were you so scared?" when he didn't answer, she looked up into his face. "Is it because of Muhsin's friends?"
He hesitated before nodding.
"Yes."
She felt panic seize her heart. She might not have been too familiar with the details, but she wasn't stupid.
"Are we in danger?" she asked softly, and he pulled her to a stop, peering into her face."
"I would never let anything happen to you. You know that right?"
"Yes."
He nodded in satisfaction.
"Good." He said, and they resumed walking.
"You didn't answer my question. Are we in danger? Is my family in danger?"
"No InshaAllah."
"How can you be sure?"
He hesitated again, and she could tell that he was debating what to tell her.
"Because if they were going to hurt your family they would have done it already."
Well that was so comforting.
"What about us?"
"I would prefer if you didn't go anywhere alone. If I cannot be with you then Rami or Rana will escort you."
"Rana?"
"Oh," he said in surprise, "I can't believe I forgot to tell you. My sister is coming to visit tomorrow! Is that okay?"
She nodded a bit curious about meeting her.
"Of course."
"She's so anxious to meet you. Just to warn you, my sister can be a bit," he hesitated, "direct."
"Is that a nice way of saying blunt?"
Hudayfah laughed and nodded.
"She can be blunt sometimes. She isn't mean, or at least she doesn't try to be. It's just if she has something to say, she's going to say it. But she is a softy at heart."
"What does she do for a living?"
"She's a surgeon."
Jenna's widened.
"Wow MashaAllah." She said her voice impressed. "How much younger than you is she?"
"Three years."
"That's like me and Muhsin."
Hudayfah's face clouded over at the mention of her brother's name, so she quickly changed the subject.
"So tell me something?"
He smiled.
"What do you want to know?"
"I don't know. Tell me something I don't know about you."
"That would be a lot of things," he said with a chuckle, and she winced to realize it was true. She knew nothing about him.
"Okay, let's start with what you do for a living."
He smiled.
"Pass."
"What?" she asked in surprise, and he laughed.
"Next question."
She huffed slightly, before crossing her arms over her chest.
"Okay, how did you get all of those clothes and shoes and such to the house in New York even though we were going to Egypt?"
"Pass." He said again, and she groaned.
"Hudayfah!" she exclaimed, and he grinned at her. "What can I ask you!?"
"Everything else."
"Fine. What's your favorite color?"
"Red. Yours is purple right?"
She nodded.
"Yup.'
They walked in silence for another few seconds before he cleared his throat.
"Can I ask you something Jenna?"
"Okay."
"When you have these nightmares," she tensed slightly in his hand, "what does your mom usually do to help you?"
"She hugs me."
He was silent for another few seconds.
"Can you tell me why you are having them?"
She looked up at his face.
"You know already don't you?"
He nodded slowly.
"Yes."
"I don't want to talk about it though." She said quickly, and it wasn't hard to detect the panic in her voice.
"Of course." He replied, and to the relief of both of them, the car came into view, stopping them from feeling awkward. However as they came up to the car, Hudayfah's face paled, and he released her hand, rushing forward. She followed, her hand flying to her mouth in a gasp, and soon Rami had flown by her standing next to Hudayfah.
All four tires of the car had been slashed, the windows were all broken, save for the windshield, which written across in red paint were the words,
'I'm Watching You.'
*** Hudayfah finished buttoning up his shirt, and stole a glance at where his wife was pacing anxiously up and down their sitting room floor. He gave a smile as she paused to fix her Hijab in the mirror for the fifth time in twenty minutes, before resuming her agitated steps.
"Nervous?" he asked and she paused to glare at him.
"No!"
He grinned, and ran a comb through his hair.
"You don't have to worry, Rana doesn't bite."
"I'm not scared of Rana." She grumbled, and his grin widened. He took a few steps towards her, and caught her hands in his.
"She is going to love you." He said softly. She began to straighten out his collar, and as her fingers grazed the bare skin of his neck, he swallowed deeply, reveling in the fact that she was willingly touching him. Once she had finished she patted his cheek, before bringing her hand back down, a small blush on her face.
After the way they had found the car the night before, Hudayfah had whisked her into a taxi faster than she had time to comprehend, and soon the house was crawling with men she had never seen before in her life. Every single one of them had bowed at her and said Salaam, but other than that they ignored her, mainly hanging out in Hudayfah's office talking in hushed voices. Hudayfah had finally come to bed at two in the morning to find Jenna still awake. She hadn't been able to sleep without him next to her, and needless to say, her nightmare that night was one of the worst ones, the message on the car the main focal point of it.
"Thank you." He said, as she straightened out the back of his shirt, and she gave him a shy smile.
"You're welcome."
"Shall we pray Maghrib?" he asked extending his hand towards her, and she nodded, placing her hand in his and following him to where their matching prayer rugs were laid out. After he had led her in prayer, his amazing voice sending the verses of the Quran straight to her heart, the doorbell rang letting them know that Rana had arrived, and they went down the stairs, hand in hand.
*** Rana Sulayman was a very sharp young lady and knew her brother Hudayfah better than he knew himself. That being said, the second he came into the room with his new wife on his arm, she immediately knew something wasn't right. She wasn't sure what it was, but their smiles seemed forced, and Jenna's arm through his seemed unnatural and awkward.
Though she still put a smile on her face, and threw her arms around her new sister.
"Oh Hud, you did not do her beauty justice! You are absolutely stunning habibti!" She exclaimed to a surprised looking Jenna, who immediately blushed.
"Thank you." Jenna said with a pleased smile, and Rana rushed forward to hug her brother tightly. She hadn't seen him in over a year, and had missed him. She hadn't even been invited to his wedding, which had been flag number one to making her suspicious. The second was the gap that was between them that no newlyweds would have only a few weeks into their marriage.
"Rana you are looking good! How are you my dear!?" Hudayfah bellowed, and Rana grinned.
"I am good big bro. Just busy with work. Thank you for inviting me! Jenna you don't know how happy I am to meet you! I look forward to getting to know you!" she exclaimed giving her arm a squeeze.
"Me too! Come let's go get you settled into your room!" Jenna said with a smile, and just as they were about to leave the room, Rami came stumbling in. He had been up late into the night patrolling the building, and had slept the whole day away.
"Good morning." He mumbled even though it was six o'clock at night.
"Salaam Rami." Rana said with a smile, and his eyes snapped open in surprise and he just stood gaping at her for a few seconds before turning towards Hudayfah accusingly.
"Why didn't you tell me she was here?!" he demanded.
Hudayfah shrugged.
"You were asleep. Plus she's only been her for like five minutes."
"And 'she' has a name and is standing right next to you." Rana said good naturedly, but Jenna was surprised to see the scowl on Rami's normally cheerful face. "Aren't you going to answer my Salaam?" Rana asked with a toothy grin, and Rami's scowl deepened.
"Walaikumasalaam." He grumbled, and when Jenna raised an eyebrow at Hudayfah, he merely grinned. "I'm going back to bed." He said irritably.
"See you later Rami!" Rana yelled after him, and she laughed when his response was to slam his bedroom door.
"Why do you have to play with him like that?" Hudayfah asked in amusement, and Rana's grin widened.
"Because it's fun!" she said winking at Jenna who giggled, and Hudayfah smiled widely to see his wife and sister laughing together.
"Alright you two ladies have fun, I have some work to do." He leaned forward and kissed Jenna on the cheek, and as she flushed all the way to her hairline, Rana's eyebrows raised slightly but she didn't say anything, allowing her new sister to show her to her room.
