The next morning as they awoke for Fajr, they both lay there a good few minutes after the alarm had gone off. It had been a long and rough night for Hudayfah and he had tossed and turned in his sleep. His restlessness had kept Jenna up as well, then factor in the time it took for them to fall back asleep after her nightmare, and they were both pretty tired.
"We're going to miss Fajr if we lay here any longer." He said eventually, and she sighed, turning over to look at him.
"I'm so tired." She nudged him in his ribs, "and it's all your fault."
He laughed and sat up.
"I know. I'm sorry, this whole thing with Rami has had me terrified. I couldn't sleep very well."
She sat up as well, and he leaned over to touch her cheek.
"What do you say we get dressed up tonight and go to the Plaza for dinner?"
Her eyes lit up.
"Are you serious?!"
He nodded.
"Yes. The next few days are going to be hard for us to get any time alone with the guys here, and now with your brother here as well." He winced slightly. "Let's do one thing for us." He hesitated. "Well we will have to take two of the guys with us, but they won't get in our way."
"Why two?"
"I love all of the men out there like my brothers, but it would take two of them to equal Rami."
Jenna smiled, before frowning slightly.
"Is he doing better?"
Hudayfah shrugged.
"I haven't checked on him yet, but considering no one came pounding on the door, I bet he is doing okay InshaAllah."
"InshaAllah." She said before yawning largely, and pushing the blanket off of her to get out of the bed. "I'm guessing you're going to go pray with the men downstairs?" she asked as she went into the bathroom.
He followed her, heading for his own sink.
"Yeah. You can join us if you'd like but you'd have to put on real clothes first." He eyed her short blue nightgown admiringly, and she blushed under his gaze.
"Stop it." She whispered, and he grinned slightly.
"Stop what?"
"Stop staring at me."
"You look beautiful. It's hard not to stare."
She turned to focus on her Wudu, her face burning up, and he began to do the same, accidently splashing her with water as he began to wash his arms. She gave a giggle as the water hit her, and he turned to look at her in the mirror, a mischievous grin coming onto his face.
"Don't you da..." she tried to warn but it was too late and he had thrown a handful of water into her face. She let out a gasp and a shriek as the cold liquid drenched her face and the front of her gown, and he gave a loud booming laugh at the shocked look on her face. "Do you think this is funny!?" she demanded, and he nodded a smirk on his face.
"Very." He threw another handful on her. "So is this!" she gave another cry of shock and he laughed again.
"Well then you would think this," she paused to throw a handful at him, "is hilarious!" to her disappointment he dodged her first attack, but she quickly emptied the toothbrush holder, filled it, and threw the cupful into his face. He blinked in surprise, sputtering slightly, and she burst out laughing.
"You're so going to get it." He warned, and before she knew it, they were in a full on water war, Jenna shrieking, and Hudayfah coming after her. Soon he had pinned her to the wall by her arms, and while at first they were both laughing, the realization of how close they were to each other sunk in, and they became quiet. After a moment he brushed a wet lock of her hair out of her eyes, and suddenly her heart began to beat fast, her breath coming out quickly.
"Jenna?" he whispered and she swallowed deeply, as he leaned forward until their faces were barely an inch away from each other, and her lips parted slightly, thinking he was going to kiss her.
Wishing that he was.
"Yes Hudayfah?" her voice was barely a whisper.
Suddenly he splashed another handful of cold water into her face and he laughed, rushing away from her, and after a stunned moment, she followed, intending on getting her revenge.
After ten minutes she sunk to the floor in laughter, and after he had turned off the sinks he slid down next to her, his pleasant laugh echoing around them. They were both soaked and cold, and the bathroom floor was slightly flooded.
But they were happy.
Together.
He reached out a hand to brush off her cheek, leaving a red blush in his wake.
"We will have to go make Wudu in one of the guest rooms." He said, and she nodded, still smiling from their little fight.
However her smile soon disappeared as he stood and removed his wet shirt. She hurriedly cast her eyes down, but not before she had caught a glimpse of very impressive stomach muscles.
Very impressive.
Either he didn't notice, or perhaps he was enjoying her discomfort because he took his time getting a dry shirt, and she kept her gaze on the floor as she hurried into her own closet, trying to calm down her burning cheeks, and feeling slightly unnerved by the fact that she had been wishing he would kiss her.
*** "Darling, I'm going to go check on Rami, do you want to come?" Hudayfah asked a few hours later as he poked his head into their room. Jenna looked up from where she was buttoning her skirt, and nodded.
"Sure. Just let me get my scarf on."
"Okay I just have to stop into my office, come down when you're ready." He said, and as he closed the door behind him, he smiled, remembering their water fight from earlier in the morning. It had been the most fun they had had together yet, and he had been so close to kissing her.
So. Close.
As he walked down the hallway towards his office, he could hear the voices of his men downstairs, laughing and talking, and while he was glad to have his friends there, he kind of wished it was just him and Jenna. Without even Rami or Rana. He could feel them becoming comfortable around each other, he could feel the intimacy growing. She wore nightgowns that while they weren't exactly risqué, they were more revealing than she used to wear. She seemed to gravitate more towards him when they were in the same room, seemed to welcome his attentions to her, and hadn't even batted an eyelash when he called her darling, which he planned on saying as much as possible. When she woke up from her nightmares she held onto him just as tightly as he held her, and she was starting to show affection herself. But they needed more time just the two of them, to get to know one another better, to form that bond, that closeness where she trusted him fully and completely. Where they would be able to be together, be one with each other on every possible level.
But now with thirteen extra people, including Muhsin in the house, he wasn't sure how things were going to go between them.
He opened his office, closed the door behind him, and froze. The place had been ransacked. Every drawer in his desk was opened and its contents were spilling out, files and papers flung all over the ground, even his chair was on its side. He took a few steps closer, his breath hitching in his throat as he spotted a picture of Rami in the middle of the desk, a short dagger stuck through it. He picked up the note that was attached to it, his fingers trembling slightly as he opened it.
Next time you won't be so lucky. All of you should be on your guard. I'm coming for her.
He closed the note, his face beginning to pale. This had to have happened sometime between when he went to sleep and now. There was no more denying it.
One of his men was a traitor.
*** "Hi Rami." Hudayfah said as he stepped into Rami's room, Jenna behind him carrying a bouquet of roses she had cut from the backyard.
"Hey Hud. Hey Jen." Rami said with a weak smile, and as he tried to sit up, Ramzy, who was watching him, hurried to help him until he was propped up against the headboard.
"Thanks Ramzy. Go on ahead and rest for a bit, I'll stay in here for a while. Do you know who is next?"
Ramzy yawned widely, before laughing slightly.
"I think it's Jafar."
Hudayfah nodded.
"Okay just tell him I'll call him when I'm done in here."
Ramzy nodded, before bowing slightly in Jenna's direction, and leaving the room, closing the door behind him. Hudayfah took a seat next to Rami's bed.
"How are you feeling pal?" he asked, and Rami smiled.
"Well I've been throwing up like crazy for the past three hours, and I'm pretty sure earlier I saw a zebra tap dancing," the three of them laughed, "but I'm feeling a little bit better."
"Alhamdulillah." Hudayfah said, patting his friend on the back.
"Did Rana give you the antidote?" Jenna asked from where she was arranging the flowers on the windowsill.
"She gave me the first dose about an hour ago. Apparently it's a five dose treatment."
"Do you drink it?" Hudayfah asked, and Rami flushed slightly.
"No, it's a shot."
Hudayfah's eyebrows rose.
"Where is it given?"
"Does it matter?" Rami asked, his face reddening, and Hudayfah burst out laughing.
"Haha! Haha! That's so embarrassing!" he crowed.
"Shut up Hud." Rami growled, and Jenna giggled.
"Well then I guess it's a good thing Rana's a professional."
"Shut up Jen!" Rami said, and Jenna and Hudayfah laughed.
"Can I get you anything?" Jenna quickly asked, because Rami looked like he was going to punch Hudayfah. At first Rami started to say no, but at the look on Hudayfah's face he nodded.
"Some orange juice would be nice."
Jenna nodded, and after giving the flowers one last fluff, she left the room, and Hudayfah turned towards Rami urgently.
"Rami, look what I found in my office." He handed the picture and note to his friend, and Rami's eyes widened.
"Ya Allah!" he muttered, and Hudayfah nodded.
"I know. You're right. It is one of my men who is working for Jamaal. How do I know who to trust?!"
Rami ran a hand over his beard, which was in serious need of a shave, and sighed.
"This is a tough one. I wish I knew."
"I wanted to take Jenna out tonight but how do I know that the men I chose aren't going to try to kill us or something?!"
Rami shook his head.
"You and Jen can't live your lives hiding forever though."
"But I have to make sure we have lives to live!"
Rami nodded.
"I'll go with you."
Hudayfah rolled his eyes.
"You are seeing dancing animals, you would be a great help at protecting us."
Rami chuckled, staring again at the picture.
"What's this hole right here?" he asked pointing to the middle, and Hudayfah winced.
"It had a dagger pierced through it."
Rami's eyes widened.
"Wow. Did you put it away?"
Hudayfah nodded.
"Yeah it's in my safe. Oh did I tell you who showed up yesterday?"
"Who?"
"Muhsin."
Ram's eyes practically fell out of his head.
"What?! What's that punk doing here!?"
"I don't know, but he had Omar's ticket."
Rami scowled.
"Does he know where he is?"
Hudayfah shook his head.
"No one does. We had a meeting yesterday and they all haven't heard from him since either my wedding, or a few days after."
"How did Muhsin get his ticket then?"
"He said some guy came and delivered it to him at his house."
"Do you believe him?"
Hudayfah nodded.
"I do."
"So why was he sent here? I'm telling you I think Jamaal has Omar."
"I do too unfortunately. But I don't know why he would have Muhsin come here." He sighed and ran a hand through his hair.
"Things are getting too complicated. People are after you, people are after Muhsin, people are after me, people are after Jenna, and one of those people is under my roof and could strike at any time."
"Maybe you should put the boys up in a hotel. Get them out of the house. The last thing we need is to expose Jenna and Rana to any danger."
Hudayfah smiled.
"Rana huh?"
Rami scowled.
"Hey she's your sister! You should have been thinking of her first!"
"Calm down Rami. Of course I was thinking of her. She was going to go back to Jersey tomorrow, but now that whoever is the traitor has seen her she is a target. She won't be able to leave. But I think it's a good idea setting the men up in hotels. I can just say that we still are on our honeymoon and want privacy."
Rami grinned, and leaned back against his pillow.
"And how is that going?"
Hudayfah scowled at his friend, before the hint of a smile began to tug at his lips.
"Things are better. Alhamdulillah."
There was a knock on the door and soon Jenna appeared a sour look on her face, and when Muhsin walked in the room behind her, Hudayfah understood why.
"Why Rami! Still a bed at this hour?!" he teased, and Rami glared at him.
"I'm trying to stay away from your face." He retorted, and Muhsin laughed.
"Hudayfah, I'm trying to convince my sister to go out with me for lunch, but she is refusing. Perhaps you can convince her to."
Hudayfah shook his head, and put an arm around Jenna.
"Absolutely not. You can order in and have lunch here or in the backyard but under no circumstances is she to go anywhere without me."
Muhsin rolled his eyes.
"Still in that gross newlywed phase huh?" he teased and Hudayfah resisted the urge to punch him. "Alright fine. Is Chinese okay little sis?"
Jenna shrugged uncomfortably.
"It doesn't matter." She said shortly, and Muhsin gave a mock salute before going out of the room, and Jenna groaned.
"Do I have to do this!?"
"I'm sorry darling but it will keep him out of the way for a while, while I attend to some business." Hudayfah said apologetically, and she sighed before nodding.
"Fine. But you owe me."
Hudayfah grinned.
"Just say when and what, and I'm at your service."
