Jenna lay next to Hudayfah, wondering if she should disturb him or not. The whole thing with Jafar had been bothering her more than she wanted to admit, and she knew that she had to tell him. She could be putting everyone in danger, especially Muhsin who, much to her annoyance, was back in the house.
"Hudayfah?"
"Yes?"
"Are you asleep?"
He chuckled softly, and turned over so he was facing her.
"No. What's up darling?"
She shifted so she was looking in his direction as well, and he took her hands in his.
"I have to tell you something. But I don't want you to be mad at me." She whispered, and he tightened his hold.
"Darling, I would never be mad at you." He said softly. "Don't ever be scared to tell me something. Okay?"
She nodded even though she knew he couldn't see her, and she swallowed nervously.
"I think I know who the traitor is."
He bolted up into a seated position, and immediately reached over to turn on the lamp before turning to look at her in shock.
"What!? How?! Were you hurt?! Are you okay!? Why do you think you know who it is!?"
She closed her eyes briefly against the light, before sitting up as well, wringing her hands nervously.
"I'm okay, nothing happened to me."
Relief crossed his features.
"You scared me." He skimmed a hand up her arm. "Okay well who do you think it is?" he asked, and though his face held a mask of concern, she detected a hint of humor in his tone. As if he thought it was cute that she had an idea of who it could be.
"Are you making fun of me?" she asked and he quickly shook his head.
"Of course not!" he exclaimed. "I'm just curious as to who you think it is."
She stared at him for a few seconds before turning away.
"Jafar."
There was a profound silence throughout the room, and once it had gone on for a couple of minutes, she turned to look at him, to find him watching her with a horrified expression on his face.
"Jafar?! You're accusing my own cousin?!" he demanded after a few moments and she shifted uncomfortably.
"Yes."
He folded his arms across his chest, anger flashing in his eyes.
"Why is that?"
"I've seen him in places he shouldn't be, and doing weird things."
"Like?"
"Well for example the day you found me in the laundry room. I was hiding because he had been outside Omar's room doing some odd stuff!" she exclaimed, and his face softened.
"Well thank you for telling me." He said, and he went to kiss her hand, when she pulled it roughly away.
"You don't believe me do you?!" she demanded, and he sighed, raking a hand through his hair.
"Darling, it's not that I don't believe you. It's just that you were really sick that day. You could have seen something that wasn't there."
"Now you are saying I am hallucinating!? I'm telling you, I know what I saw, and you don't believe me!"
"Jenna, Jafar is my cousin. My own flesh and blood, he wouldn't betray me!"
"And why not!? Just because he is related to you means he couldn't be a bad person!? Look at Abu Lahab! One of the worst men ever to live and he was Rasul Allah's Uncle!"
"Are you comparing Jafar to Abu Lahab!?" he exclaimed in disbelief, and she put her face in her hands before looking back up at him.
"Hudayfah, I saw him there. I think you just don't want to admit that any of your men could be a traitor. That's the problem!"
His jaw clenched and he turned his face away from her for a few beats of silence before turning off the lamp and laying back down.
"I'm going to sleep."
"So that's it then. I say something you don't like and suddenly you don't talk to me anymore?"
He didn't respond, pulling the blanket tighter around his shoulders, and she huffed in annoyance.
"Fine. Be that way." She exclaimed before she flopped back down in bed.
A few hours later, when she awoke from her nightmare, it was a few seconds before he reached for her, pulling her against his chest, and putting a hand in her hair.
"I'm sorry Jenna." he asked quietly, and she gave a sniffle. This dream had been bad. She realized that whenever she didn't sleep on good terms with Hudayfah, whenever she didn't fall asleep in his arms, the dreams were more severe.
"It's okay."
He shook his head.
"No it's not. I shouldn't have gotten angry, I should have listened to you instead of behaving childishly. You're right, I just don't want to admit that someone close to me could be betraying me like this." He sighed and moved slightly so she was tucked into him. "I'm sorry I made you feel like I didn't believe you."
"It's okay." She said again, and he kissed her head.
"If it will make you feel better, I won't send you out with him anymore. You can go with someone else." He hesitated. "But isn't it possible that there were logical reasons to whatever you saw him doing?"
"I don't know. It was pretty weird. He was putting powder on Omar's door."
Hudayfah frowned.
"Powder? What do you mean?"
She shrugged.
"I don't know. He was spreading it all over the doorframe and handle, and then he ran away when he heard you coming."
Hudayfah's frown deepened.
"I know that he can be kind of intense and he isn't loud like Farris or cheerful like Ali or funny like Rami. But he really is a good guy. We will just have to keep an eye on him." He pushed her chin up so she was looking at him. "Forgive me?" he asked, and she laughed.
"I already told you it was okay."
He nodded.
"Good. I want us to have a good time today. I want you to meet all my colleagues and friends!" He exclaimed, and she quickly shook her head.
"I don't do well being the center of attention!"
"You'll be okay. I heard from Rana that you got an awesome dress." He looked at her mischievously. "I can't wait to see it."
She blushed prettily, before smothering a yawn against the back of her left hand.
"Well I hope you like it." She murmured sleepily.
"Wanna know a secret?" he asked, and as she nodded, yawning again, he gave a low chuckle.
"Yes."
"Rami proposed to Rana."
She turned around in his arms to look at him, a smile on her face.
"Really? Did she accept? Aw that's wonderful! They will be the cutest couple MashaAllah!"
He laughed, and pushed the hair back from her forehead.
"I haven't talked to her yet, but I think she will."
"Me too." She murmured and soon he felt her grow heavy, and her breathing evened out, and he moved her so she was on her side of the bed, before staring at her sleeping face. He believed that she thought she saw Jafar doing something suspicious. But he didn't believe that Jafar was the traitor. There had to be an explanation, but he didn't want to offend his cousin by accusing him.
He would just do as he told her, and keep an eye on things.
*** "You wanted to see me Hud?" Rana asked, knocking lightly on Hudayfah's office door, and coming into the room, and he grinned at her, standing up and pulling her into a hug. Once he had let her go, she looked at him suspiciously.
"Okay. What's going on?" she asked, taking a seat as he did, and his smile widened.
"I had a very interesting talk with Rami."
Her eyes lit up, but her face remained neutral.
"Did you?"
He nodded, his grin never leaving his face.
"Oh yes. He wants to marry you."
"Does he?" she asked and though her face still was emotionless, Hudayfah knew his sister well enough to know she was stifling a smile.
"He does. I've talked to Baba and Sami, and we all agree to it, if you want to." He motioned with a hand. "Do you want to marry him Rana?" he asked, and this time she let the smile slide onto her face.
"I do. I really do." She said a bit tearfully.
He smiled, and stepped around the desk to hug her tightly again, before kissing her on the cheek and releasing his hold.
"Ok, now why do you want to marry him?"
She groaned, and sunk back down in her seat
"Are you really going to ask me that?!"
"Hey!" he exclaimed sitting down again, "I have to make sure you are marrying him for the right reasons!"
She stared at him in disbelief, before letting out a long breath.
"Okay. Well." She paused again before a small smile lit up her face. "We have always fought with each other. No matter what the situation, no matter the circumstance, you could almost always find us on opposite sides, always arguing about something." Her smile widened, and he laughed.
"You two did fight a lot! With me having to play peacemaker in the middle!"
She laughed, giving a wistful nod.
"You know I was a tough little girl. Always have been tough, and I probably always will be. But every time he would start to pick on me, even if it was gentle teasing as I realize now, I would run to my room and cry. Just sob my heart out. And sometimes Mama would follow me and hug me, laughing, saying she had given him a stern talking to! I would ask her why nobody could make me cry like him, and she would laugh, and say 'one day you'll understand.'" She shook her head, her eyes watering again. "And I understand it now. I understand that even then my soul recognized him as mine. Even if I was too little to understand. Even if it took some time for me to come to terms with it." She laughed. "A long time. I remember the first time I realized that I was in love with him. I'll admit to it, I did cry out of shock."
He smiled, but didn't say anything, waiting for her to continue.
She sighed, and gave him a smile.
"When I came down those stairs, and he turned around and I saw those bullets in his arm," she shook her head, "my whole world was turned upside down. When I found out they were poisoned, it was as if my heart had been ripped in half. I was so scared Hud. I was so scared I would lose him before I even had a chance to call him mine. So you want to know why I want to marry him?"
Hudayfah gave the briefest of nods, amazed at how emotional his sister was getting.
"I want to marry him because he makes me laugh. Because he makes me cry. Because he reminds me of Allah (swt). Because he drives me crazy. Because he's Rami," She shrugged. "And he's mine." She said her voice breaking slightly, and Hudayfah reached out a hand to take hers.
"Well," he said after a few moments of silence. "I think that's a good enough reason. He drives you crazy."
She laughed, and pushed his arm.
"Out of all of that, that's what you focus on?!"
"I like the part about your soul recognizing me as yours." Came a voice from the doorway, and she froze, her eyes wide before she turned around to face him, her cheeks reddening slightly.
"Now you've taken to eavesdropping?" she teased, wiping at a tear that was sliding down her cheek, and he smiled, stepping into the room.
"Only when you're saying good things about me. It so rarely happens you know."
"Shut up." She said with an eye roll, and he laughed, taking the seat next to her, before looking at Hudayfah.
"May I say something?" he asked, and Hud motioned with his hand.
"Please."
Rami turned to look at Rana, his face somber.
"I'm not perfect Rana. And I probably will still push your buttons, still drive you crazy after we are married."
"Oh I have no doubt about that!" she exclaimed, and he laughed.
"Fine, we all know that's going to happen. But I promise you that I'll do it out of love. Every single thing. And if sometimes we fight and can't remember why we were crazy enough to actually get together," she laughed, before wiping at her eyes again, "then promise me we will remember those beautiful words you just said."
"Which ones?" she whispered, and he smiled.
"That your soul recognized me as yours. Because that's the greatest honor I have ever received. Being yours."
***
"Wow! Look at this beauty!" Hudayfah said with a whistle as Jenna came down the stairs, and she blushed deeply as he took her in. She was wearing a long red dress, the matching heels and ring, was holding a matching red clutch, and had on a red scarf with diamonds on it. Her eyes were lined with kohl, and as she descended the last few steps, he took her hand, helped her down the rest of the steps, and dropped a kiss on her forehead.
"Thank you." She said with a pleased expression and he grinned.
"'And you're very handsome too Hudayfah.'" He said in a mock falsetto voice, and she laughed, before straightening his tie.
"And you're very handsome too Hudayfah." She pressed a kiss to his cheek. "Very handsome."
"Well you know I try." He said with a wave of his hand, and she laughed, before giving him a push.
"You're so silly."
He laughed as well, and tucked her arm into his.
"Ready?" he asked and she nodded, picking up the train of her dress as they descended the front steps towards the limo. She was right, the heels had been too high, and he had to help her with the last few steps, laughing as she stumbled slightly and catching her in his arms.
"Are you laughing at me?" she demanded, and he nodded before kissing her nose.
"Most definitely."
As she climbed inside the car, she greeted Ali and Farris, before taking a seat across from them, Hudayfah sliding in next to her, probably closer than he needed to be, but she didn't mind. She liked having him so close. It made her feel safe and happy.
As the driver started the car and pulled out into traffic, Ali smiled at them cheerfully.
"You two look so nice MashaAllah!"
Farris nodded in agreement.
"The best couple in all of America!"
Jenna laughed, and patted Hudayfah's shoulder fondly.
"Thank you for your compliments. They are much appreciated."
"So we just want to make sure that you have no plans for Friday?" Ali asked, and after a moment of thinking, Hudayfah shook his head.
"No we don't. Why?"
"Because we are throwing your wedding party!" Farris exclaimed.
"Oh I forgot about that!" Jenna said excitedly. "Oh Hudayfah did you hear?!"
"I did darling." He said in amusement. "You'll have to go get a new wedding dress."
Her eyes lit up, but she shook her head at the same time.
"Oh why do I need a new one? I still have my first one! Barely a month old!"
Hudayfah waved a hand in the air.
"It's much too fancy for a house party!"
She nodded in agreement. It had been awfully heavy. Plus she was actually planning on enjoying herself at this party, she didn't want to have to be sitting the entire time because she was too scared to get it dirty.
As Farris and Ali began to explain the plans they had for the party, Hudayfah took Jenna's hand in his, squeezing it gently, before lacing their fingers together, and Jenna smiled. If a month ago someone told her that she would be getting butterflies in her stomach because Hudayfah was holding her hand, she would have called them crazy.
Alhamdulillah things were going well.
