"Darling, do you have any plans today?" Hudayfah asked as Jenna began to pin her Hijab, and she turned to look at him.
"Not that I know of. Why?" she asked, blushing slightly. He hadn't stopped kissing her ever since their little moment the night before. It's not like she didn't like it or anything, but it was still a new experience to her and kind of awkward. Of course he didn't do it in front of the others, and he did everything to put her at ease, but still.
"Well, I have to go into the office today, and I was wondering if you'd want to go with me and check it out?"
She smiled.
"Check out a branch of HudCo? Are you serious Hudayfah!" she teased, and he laughed.
"Be quiet. So are you in?"
She nodded.
"Yup."
"Great. Can you be ready in twenty minutes?"
She opened her arms, and spun in a circle.
"I'm ready now!"
He smiled.
"Good."
Twenty minutes later they were sitting in the limo, and twenty minutes after that they pulled to a stop in front of a large building with 'HudCo' in giant green letters on the front.
"Wow all of this is yours?" she asked in awe as he helped her out of the car, and he smiled.
"Yes. We have many different departments."
As they entered the building, people everywhere were stopping to greet Hudayfah, and he in turn would introduce them to her. They had to have spoken to at least twenty people before they even reached his office. The secretary's eyes practically fell out of her head as Hudayfah appeared and she jumped from her seat.
"Mr. Sulayman! What are you doing in New York!?" she exclaimed, and he grinned.
"I'm here visiting with my new wife. Jenna, this is Ginger, my secretary."
Ginger smiled, and shook Jenna's hand.
"It's nice to meet you Mrs. Sulayman."
"You too Ginger."
"We won't be staying long so hold all calls." Hudayfah said, and after giving Ginger a few more instructions, they entered his office, and Jenna's eyes widened.
"Is that the Empire State Building!?" she exclaimed walking towards his window, and he grinned as he sat behind his desk.
"Yeah. It's an amazing view isn't it?"
"Breathtaking!" she exclaimed, and she stepped closer towards the window. "I haven't seen it before."
"Really?" he asked in surprise, and she shook her head.
"Nope. We haven't really done much."
"I'm sorry Jenna." He said quietly, and she turned to look at him.
"For what?"
"For giving you the worst honeymoon in the world."
"Oh Hudayfah you saved my life. Personally I'd take that over a honeymoon any day!"
He stood from his chair, and wrapped an arm around her waist.
"No I want to give you a proper honeymoon. Name anywhere in the United States, and we will go."
Her face lit up.
"Really!?"
"Really."
"Can we go to Hawaii?"
"Your wish is my command." He said bowing slightly and she stepped into his embrace, kissing him lightly.
"Alright I just have a little bit of paperwork to go through, then what do you say we go get some lunch?"
"Sounds good!"
For the next hour Hudayfah did his work, and Jenna curled up in one of the chairs, reading the book she had brought with her, and finally he put the last of the papers away, and stood up.
"Ready darling?"
"Ready!"
They held hands as they walked down the hallway to the elevator, and as they got inside, Hudayfah pressed the button for the lobby.
"Where do you want to go eat?"
She shrugged.
"I don't know. Wherever you want!"
"Do you want to go to The Hard Rock Café?"
"Can we really!?" she asked with a gasp, and he laughed.
"Of course. Let me just text one of the men to meet us there. I have security here but we will be exposed out there." There was a moment of silence as he tapped on his phone, before he put it away.
"So what do you think of the building?"
"I like it." She said with a smile.
"Well it's..."
Suddenly the elevator jolted to a halt, and Hudayfah snagged Jenna into his arms as she lost her balance and almost fell over.
"Hudayfah what's going on?" she asked in a panicked voice, and as the elevator fell a bit more and the lights flickered off, she grabbed on tighter to him.
"I don't know darling." He said worriedly, looking around, before he pushed the emergency button.
"What's your emergency?" came a voice from the speaker.
"Uh yes the elevator dropped, the lights are off, and it won't move." He said into the intercom.
"Well it may be awhile until we can call the fire department."
"This is Mr. Sulayman." Hudayfah said.
There was a beat of silence, and a bit of scrambling before her voice came back.
"I'm sorry Mr. Sulayman, I just called the fire department and our mechanical crew, and they are on their way."
"Thank you." He replied and Jenna laughed.
"Wow I guess there are some perks to being the boss."
He laughed as well, before bending to brush his lips over hers, and when he pulled back, she blushed.
"Are you embarrassed?" he asked gently, and she flushed deeper.
"Maybe a little."
"Do you regret kissing me?" he asked a bit concerned, and she shook her head.
"My only regret is that I waited so long." She said softly, and his face lit up.
"Then what is it?"
"Don't worry about it. I've spent my whole life staying away from boys, it will just take a little to get used to." She said with a smile, and he laughed.
"Well you know, maybe I can help you get used to it faster." He said kissing her again, and once they broke it off, she laughed and leaned her head against his chest, before looking around the elevator.
"So looks like we are going to be stuck in here for a little bit. What do you want to do?" she asked taking a seat on the floor, and he sat as well, before rubbing a hand over his beard thoughtfully.
"I don't know. What do you want to do?"
"We could get to know each other better." She said softly, and he smiled.
"So like ask each other questions?"
She nodded.
"Yup."
"I love that idea. You go first."
She pulled her knees up to her chest, and placed her arms on top.
"Okay. Um, what's your favorite food?"
He laughed and leaned back against the wall.
"Your chicken and rice."
She blushed prettily.
"Really?"
He nodded.
"Really."
She leaned forward and gave him a kiss, and he laughed.
"Okay, my turn. What's your favorite television show?"
She smiled.
"Grey's Anatomy."
"Really!?" he asked in astonishment and she raised in eyebrow.
"Why do you sound so surprised?"
"It's just so bloody and gross." He said with a grimace, and she laughed.
"Don't tell me you get grossed out by surgeries and blood and stuff like that?!"
"It's gross! You don't get freaked out?" He asked, and she laughed again.
"I guess in real life I can be squeamish but on the screen I'm okay! What's your favorite show?"
"I don't really have time to watch television."
"Okay," she said shifting her legs under her, "when you do watch television, what do you like to watch?"
"Okay do you know the show Bones?"
"You can't watch surgeries but you can watch a show where she dissects human remains?" she exclaimed with a laugh and he nudged her with his shoulder.
"Be quiet. There is no blood on that show."
She laughed again.
"Okay, so my husband can't handle blood. Good to know for the future."
He shook his head.
"What did you major in in college?"
She looked at him in surprise.
"We've never talked about this before?"
He shook his head.
"Nope."
"Hmm, okay well I majored in English."
"Like grammar?" he asked with a wrinkled nose, and she laughed.
"What's so repulsive about grammar?"
"It's just annoying."
"I studied the Literature side. Like with Shakespeare, and poetry and stuff like that."
He stared at her for a few seconds before smiling.
"'See, how she leans her cheek upon her hand! O, that I were a glove upon that hand, that I might touch that cheek."
She blushed, lifted her head up from her arms, and smiled.
"And what does a mechanical engineer know of Shakespeare?"
He grinned.
"I got detention a lot in high school, and we served it in the auditorium where the drama club practiced. I could have played Romeo with all the rehearsals we had to attend. Why are you grinning like that?"
She laughed.
"I'm imagining you playing Romeo. I'd love to see that. Why were you in detention a lot?"
"Jamaal." He said with a shrug.
"Oh. Of course." She was quiet for a few seconds before smiling. "Tell me something about your childhood."
"What do you want to know?"
She shook her head.
"I don't know. Anything."
"Well when I was seven I fell off of my bike and broke my arm."
"When I was ten I tripped on my rollerblades and cracked my head open. Needed thirty one stiches right...here." she said pointing to a section of her head.
"Ugh." He said with a shudder. "How come I've never seen the scar?"
"It's under my hair. I'll show it to you when we get home."
"Um, no thanks." He said looking slightly queasy, and she laughed.
"Aw Habibi." She said patting his leg, and he turned to look at her.
"What did you say?"
"Um, habibi." She said quietly, her face turning red, and he leaned forward, putting a hand on her neck.
"Don't be embarrassed." He whispered before kissing her, and it was only because two minutes later they heard a scraping sound from above and a voice that they quickly shot apart.
"Uh sorry to interrupt Mr. Sulayman, but it looks like the elevator is stuck between two floors."
As they both looked up, their faces turned red to see about three workmen peeking in through a tile in the ceiling.
"Uh, um, okay well how long will it take to get us out?"
"About twenty minutes."
"Alright, thank you." Hudayfah replied, and once the men disappeared from view, Jenna burst out laughing.
"Oh my God that was so humiliating." She said putting her hands to her face, and he laughed.
"It's okay, at least we are married."
She nodded, her face still red.
"Tell me another story before I bust into embarrassed tears." She said, and he patted her hand.
"Once when I was like five, Sami convinced me that my Power Rangers came alive at night, so I would hide them in between the couch cushions before I went to sleep so by the time they could get out, it would be morning, and they would have to go back to being toys."
She laughed.
"Muhsin did that to me but with my Barbie dolls. Of course being Muhsin he couldn't be so tame in his stories. He made up this elaborate tale that they would come into my room and steal me. I wouldn't touch a Barbie for like six months."
He laughed, and laced their fingers together.
"What did you want to be when you were little?"
"A ballerina." She replied instantly, and he smiled.
"You took ballet?"
"I started when I was three. It was the most amazing thing in the world for me. I had the little pink tutu, and the tiara and the little toe shoes. But I lost interest when I was eight."
"How come?"
"I went through a princess phase!" He laughed loudly, and she smiled. "What did you want to be?"
"Believe it or not, a doctor."
She raised in eyebrow in amusement.
"Really? A doctor? What about how freaked out you get about blood and stuff?"
"I wasn't always like that. In fact I got a doctor's kit for Eid when I was six, and I used to practice on everyone."
"That's so cute." She said with a smile. "Then what made you so freaked out?"
"When I was eleven we saw a really bad car accident and there was blood everywhere and this guy's guts were spilling out and it just turned me off forever. I know this is something we should already know about each other, but do you want kids?"
She flushed slightly.
"Yes InshaAllah."
"How many?"
"I've always wanted at least a boy and a girl." She squeezed his fingers. "But four sounds nice."
"Rana told you?" he guessed, and she smiled.
"Rana told me."
"Well at least four. I love kids."
She turned her face towards him.
"So I've heard." She brushed a piece of his hair away from his face. "You know Wednesday is our one month anniversary."
"Yes I know." He kissed her hand. "What do you want to do?"
She gave a shrug.
"I don't know. Maybe dinner and a movie? Recreate our first date but without the car being destroyed?"
"Sounds wonderful." He said with a smile, and they sat in silence for a few seconds before he turned to face her again.
"What is one of your dreams?"
"My dreams?"
"Yeah. Like something you hope to do or accomplish."
"Oh," she paused to stare at the elevator buttons thoughtfully, "I want to write a book InshaAllah."
"Really?" he asked, a surprised and pleased expression on his face. "that's great! What kind of book? Fiction?"
"Yeah. Maybe a Young Adult novel."
"I think you would be good at it. You should do it. I know some editors, if you write it, we can submit it."
"Really?" she asked with a hopeful smile, and he nodded.
"Really."
She ran a hand through his hair, pushing back that pesky strand that kept falling into his face.
"What is one of your dreams?"
"You know everyone always thinks that I've accomplished my dream with the Palm Reader. And I guess yeah in some ways I have. But my biggest dream has always been having a family." He leaned his head against the wall. "Sami always made fun of me, but I've always wanted to come home to a wife who would give me a kiss, who would make me laugh and that would adore me, and I would love with all of my heart. To little children who would scream 'Baba!' as they all clamored to hug me."
"And how is that dream coming?"
He turned towards her, a soft smile on his face.
"You tell me."
She leaned forward and kissed him softly.
"I'd say you're halfway there."
