Sorry for any mistakes, I was too anxious to finally get this chapter out. And I was too tired lol Enjoy! :)
As Muhsin stepped into the room, Hudayfah watched from where he was standing in the corner of the room, being 'guarded' by Laith. Jamaal had dragged him in there five minutes earlier telling him that he wouldn't want Hudayfah to miss out on the fun.
What a sicko.
He was just glad Jenna wouldn't be in here. It would be too taxing on her to have to witness this, even if the FBI was going to put a stop to it before anything could happen. Issam had let him slip into her room last night for a couple of hours since Jamaal was sleeping, and even though she was putting up a brave front, he could tell how nervous she was. He had held her tightly in his arms until she had fallen asleep, praying that soon all of this would be over, and he could take her home, and keep her safe forever.
He wished he didn't have to be there, for even though he knew that there were five agents in the room, he still had a deep feeling of unease in the pit of his stomach. Before Issam had brought him here, he had fitted Hudayfah with a wire, and a bullet proof vest, giving him some last minute instructions...
"Do not under any circumstances, give away our situation." Issam said sternly, taping the small recorder to the middle of Hudayfah's chest.
"What do you mean?"
"I mean, that even if Jamaal guns down every single agent in the room, do not confess to knowing anything. Sami, Jafar, and a few others will be outside just in case, but we cannot have you blowing this."
"Why do you think I would blow it?!"
"I'm not saying that you would purposely. But you are not trained to think fast on your feet like the rest of us are. If something goes wrong, I don't want you freaking out."
"I'm not going to freak out!"
"Okay, good."
"You really think Jamaal is going to figure out there are agents in the room?" Hudayfah asked after a few minutes of silence.
Issam shrugged.
"He could. He is starting to get desperate, and desperate men notice everything. Even if someone were to brush their hair out of their eyes, he could become suspicious." He paused to rip off another piece of tape. "For argument's sake, let's say he was able to pick out one of us, the rest of us would have to go along with whatever he does. It may seem a little weird, but we have to follow his orders even if it seems like it's going against the plan. It's better than blowing all of our covers. So I have to warn you again. No matter what happens..."
"Don't let on that I know anything. Yes I'm not stupid." Hudayfah muttered in an irritated voice.
"And just go along with it."
"Fine." Hudayfah mumbled. "Why do I have to wear a wire?"
"Because we need recorded proof when Jamaal tries to kill Muhsin."
"No I know that," Hudayfah said raising his arm as Issam taped another wire down. "But why do I have to wear it?"
"Because you would be the last person Jamaal would suspect."
"Why is that?"
"Because," he paused to loop the wire around Hudayfah's shoulder, handing him the vest to strap on. "You have been locked up and under guard. The rest of us have had free reign to move in and out of the house. If he gets suspicious, you won't be the first he thinks of."
"How do you know that?" Hudayfah asked, pulling his shirt back on, and Issam laughed.
"When you've been working in the FBI undercover for as long as I have, you tend to think like a criminal." He said a bit bitterly, and Hudayfah watched curiously as he began to put away the equipment. He looked like he was mid to late thirties, but Hudayfah was betting he was older, and was just one of those people who looked younger than they really were.
"Well I hope everything goes well."
"It will."
"And you promise that Jenna will be safe?"
"She will be safe." Issam said with a nod...
That conversation had made him a little uneasy to say the least. It made him feel like that just maybe the Feds weren't as in control as they claimed to be.
"Sit." Jamaal ordered to Muhsin, bringing Hudayfah back to the present, and as Muhsin sat down on the stool in the middle of the room, Jamaal took a seat behind his desk, leaning back comfortably. "Well this is nice! All of us hanging out like good old times! Isn't this nice?!" He exclaimed to the room, and as a few murmurs of 'yes' reached his ears, he grinned in satisfaction. "Now, Muhsin, I have asked you here today because it has been a long time coming. Hudayfah is just here for fun! Hi Hudayfah!" he exclaimed waving and Hudayfah shook his head.
This man had to be insane! There was no other explanation!
"Now Muhsin. Do you have any idea why I've brought you in here today?" Jamaal asked, and when Muhsin shook his head, Jamaal leaned forward.
"Do you not remember the little deal we made not too long ago?"
Muhsin hesitated for a second before nodding.
"Yes."
"Well, it didn't exactly pan out in my favor, and I'm not too thrilled about it. That being said, I've come to collect."
"You aren't getting Jenna." Hudayfah spat out angrily, even though he knew that the FBI wouldn't let that happen, the thought of it still made him angry.
"Oh give it a rest Hudayfah." Jamaal said in annoyance. "This is not about you okay? This is between me and Muhsin." He huffed, before stepping up towards Muhsin, pulling out his gun from his pocket. "Now this really isn't personal Muhsin. Think of it more of me needing to avenge my father."
"I don't understand." Muhsin whispered, and Hudayfah could detect a sheen of sweat on his brother in law's forehead. He couldn't even imagine the terror Muhsin was feeling.
Anything could go wrong.
"Oh. Did I not explain this to you?" Jamaal asked curiously, before his eyes lit up. "That's right! I explained it to Hud! Well Muhsin, it would be terrible manners for me to kill you without telling you why!" he exclaimed.
"Can't we just skip the killing part?" he pleaded, and Jamaal laughed.
"Nice try! Now I don't want to draw this out because in all honesty, I've been waiting like six years for this, and I do have a life you know!"
Hudayfah rolled his eyes.
This guy was crazy.
"So here is the cliff notes version. The gang your dear Uncle Haytham was in, was run by my father, Haytham ratted him out, Baba got the death sentence, leaving behind a son thirsty for revenge, and leaving Haytham without any kids for the son to avenge himself by. So that's where you come in!" he exclaimed cheerfully, and Muhsin's face paled.
"Why should I have to pay for what my Uncle did!?"
"Technically, you trailed in his footsteps. Have you not been following?! Now enough talking!" he exclaimed holding up a hand, "back to business. And we have to hurry and get this done before eight, because burying a body takes time, and I want to make it to Olive Garden for dinner before it closes." He said with a grin, and this time Hudayfah couldn't stay quiet.
"Now wait just a second! You are going to kill him and then what?! Let us go as if nothing happened!?"
Jamaal shrugged.
"Why not? I have no use for you after he's dead!"
Hudayfah scoffed.
"You don't think we won't go straight to the police?!" he demanded, and Issam pushed him roughly.
"Be quiet." He growled, his eyes flashing angrily, but Hudayfah shoved past him, glaring at Jamaal.
Jamaal laughed.
"Hudayfah! You won't have any proof! By the time you get back with the 'police'" he paused to make air quotes, "I will be on a plane out of the United States. I was just joking about Olive Garden! We will pick up some burritos on the way to the airport!"
"You are crazy." Hudayfah said, and Issam pushed him again.
"And you need to shut up!" he exclaimed, and Hudayfah backed against the wall, clenching his fists.
"Okay enough of this! I'm getting bored, and I wouldn't want Muhsin to get out of this alive! So everyone do as Issam said and shut up, and let me get back to business!" Jamaal exclaimed, before walking around Muhsin so he was able to look at Hudayfah. "I would like to see your face for this one Hud." He said gleefully, and Hudayfah inhaled sharply.
All that was needed was for Jamaal to take the safety off of the gun. Once the safety was off, they could arrest him...
It was as if the world had suddenly gone in slow motion.
Hudayfah watched as Jamaal raised the gun, placed it against Muhsin's head, reached for the safety...
And paused.
"Well what is this?" he asked, and as he dropped the gun, Hudayfah felt his heart sink.
He just wanted this to be over!
Everyone watched as Jamaal sauntered forward, a small smile on his face as he came to a stop in front of Laith.
"You flinched."
"What do you mean?" Laith asked, his face a blank mask.
"When I put the gun to his head, you reached towards your pocket. Why is that?"
"I didn't move."
"You moved Laith." He turned to look at the rest of the room. "He moved didn't he?" he asked, and when a chorus of 'yes' responded, Jamaal turned back to look at him. "What are you wearing a wire or something?"
"No. I can honestly say I'm not." Laith answered, but Jamaal still watched him thoughtfully, a frown on his face, before he turned around again. "Issam?"
Issam looked up from where he was perched on the edge of Jamaal's desk, playing Angry Birds on his phone as if he didn't have a care in the world.
Man he's good. Hudayfah couldn't help thinking as Issam stood up, a bored expression on his face.
"What boss?"
"Search him." Jamaal ordered, and Issam rolled his eyes, before putting his phone in his pocket, and walking towards Laith. He pushed him against the wall, and a few seconds later, he pulled out Laith's gun and badge, his eyes flashing a warning at Hudayfah before he held the badge up in the air.
"Look what I found boss." Issam said, keeping Laith pressed against the wall, and Jamaal strolled forward.
"Well, well, well! What do we have here?!" he asked, taking the badge from Issam and opening it. "Secret Agent?! My goodness Laith! You've been busy! Look over here boys! Looks like Ali wasn't the only double crosser!" Jamaal exclaimed, and as everyone in the room laughed, Hudayfah avoided looking in the direction where his cousin was standing in the corner, his eyes cast on the ground. "Now this concerns me. Because I can't help but wonder if you're setting me up!" Jamaal exclaimed, and Laith winced as Issam pressed his hand harder against his chest.
"I'm not." He rasped out, and Jamaal signaled with two fingers towards a group of men.
"Henry, Ralph and Jim, check the place for others." He ordered, and Hudayfah let out an internal sigh of relief as the three left the room. Henry and Jim were agents, they would be able to handle this.
"What do you say boss?" Issam asked, and Jamaal grinned.
"Looks like we are going to have more fun tonight than I originally thought!" he exclaimed, before he shoved Laith towards Muhsin, forcing him onto the ground. "Go get the girl." He ordered after one of the men had placed his hands on Laith's shoulders, and for a split second, Issam lost his composure.
"What?" he asked, quickly arranging his features back to his bored expression as Jamaal looked up at him.
"You heard me. I asked her the other day if she knew Laith, and she said no. Let's see if she changes her words now that we've actually met him as Secret Agent Laith Hakim." he paused to pat Laith's cheek, before looking back at Issam. "Go." He said again, and as Issam left the room, he turned to Hudayfah. "Well now Hud. Is there something you'd like to share with me?"
Hudayfah shook his head.
"Hey, I'm still trying to grasp the fact that my nice next door neighbor was actually working for you. The fact that he is actually an agent is news to me!"
And it had been.
Jamaal's eyes lit up.
"So Jenna has met him then?"
"I didn't say that."
"That doesn't mean it's not true." Jamaal said with a slight smirk, but before either of them could respond, the door reopened, and Henry reappeared.
"Where's Ralph and Jim?" Jamaal asked, and Henry took a seat.
"They decided to stay downstairs and make sure no one shows up."
"Good idea." Jamaal said with a nod of satisfaction, before the door opened again, and Issam appeared, pulling a slightly frightened Jenna by her arm.
"Let go of her!" Hudayfah exclaimed charging forward, and Jamaal caught him by the back of his shirt, hauling him backwards.
"Calm down Romeo," he said with an eye roll, "other than a curious question, you two are not my concern at the moment, so you can have her." He motioned with a hand, and as Issam released her, she flew at Hudayfah, his arms pulling her tightly against him as he backed them into a corner. "Now Jenna lovely. Why did you lie to me about knowing Laith, when he so clearly was your neighbor as dear Hudayfah pointed out?"
Hudayfah felt his heart sink, sure everything would be over, but to his surprise, she rolled her eyes and gave a huff of annoyance.
"Just because Hudayfah met the neighbors doesn't mean I did. I was too busy hiding out from you and your men." She said smoothly, and as he saw a small smile hover on the edges of Issam's mouth, he knew that he had warned her.
"Touché love." Jamaal said with a grin, before he turned back to look at Laith and Muhsin. "Now, originally my main concern was Muhsin, but this whole Secret Agent business his piqued my interest!" he gripped Laith by his hair, and pulled his head backwards. "Now spill. Have you been an agent this whole time, or did you recently decide to be a narc?" When Laith didn't answer, he pushed his head back harder. "Answer!"
"The whole time." Laith said through gritted teeth.
"Under Beckman or Holt's orders?" Jamaal asked pulling harder, and Laith winced.
"Beckman."
"What's your assignment?"
"To protect Muhsin."
Jamaal snorted.
"Fabulous job doing that!" he tightened his hold. "How many agents does he have watching me right now?"
"Three."
Jamaal looked around the room, his eyes skimming suspiciously over each of his men, before he looked back down.
"Are any of them in the room right now?"
"No." Laith answered quickly, and Jamaal laughed.
"Let me ask that again." He cleared his throat, speaking loudly. "Are any of them in this room right now?"
There was a tense silence in the room. Laith was in a tough spot. If he didn't say anything, Jamaal would know he was lying. It would be too risky to out Issam, he had to choose carefully.
"While I'm young Laith." Jamaal said with a roll of his eyes, and Laith sighed.
"There is one downstairs."
"Good, the boys will get him." Jamaal said with a nod, and Hudayfah resisted the urge to roll his eyes. Jamaal couldn't put two and two together that the one downstairs was one of the 'boys'?
Idiot.
"Are you wearing a wire?" Jamaal asked, and Laith shook his head.
"No."
"Open your shirt." He ordered, and once it was revealed that Laith was in fact not wearing a wire, Jamaal pushed him back down. "I don't like when people pretend to be something they aren't. And the fact that you've been a spy, annoys me terribly. We will have to take care of you now before we handle Muhsin." He said to Laith, and Hudayfah felt his heart speed up.
The original plan was for them to pin Jamaal for trying to kill Muhsin. If he tried to kill Laith first, Hudayfah wasn't sure if they could still make the bust, or if any of the agents would reveal themselves to save him.
***
Jenna watched in horror as Jamaal put his gun to Laith's head. This was not looking good, nor was it looking like it was going according to plan. As she gave a small gasp of fright, Hudayfah tightened his grip on her waist, squeezing it reassuringly.
"Boss?" Issam asked casually, examining his nails, and Jamaal looked up, removing the gun.
"What?"
"You might want to use your pistol for this." He paused to unlock his phone. "Cleaner shot."
Jamaal looked at him thoughtfully, before nodding.
"Good idea." He said, and as he traded weapons with one of the men, and stepped back towards Laith, Jenna drew in a breath.
When Issam had come to get her, there hadn't been much time to talk about it, but he had warned her that Laith's cover was blown, and that she needed to play innocent and that everything was under control.
As Laith gave out a cry of pain, she winced.
It didn't seem like it was under control.
"Um, boss?" Issam interrupted again as Jamaal placed the gun back in it's place, and Jamaal sighed again.
"What do you want Issam?"
"I'm thinking that maybe we don't kill the Fed right now."
Jamaal lowered the gun.
"Why not?"
"I say we kill the kid first, make Laith watch so he can be tortured forever by the image of how badly he failed at his job."
Jenna's heart started beating fast.
There was a brief silence, before Jamaal grinned, leaning forward to clap Issam on the back.
"It's brilliant! You're evil man!" he exclaimed, and Issam laughed.
"I learned from the best!"
Jenna couldn't help but hope that Issam was really on their side, and was just a fantastic actor, because he was being really convincing.
As Jamaal placed the gun he had been holding over Laith at her brother's temple, Jenna gripped Hudayfah's hands, murmuring 'Bismillah' under her breath.
Everything would be fine.
Nothing would happen to Muhsin InshaAllah...
The room fell silent, so silent, that the sound of Jamaal's gun cocking as he released the safety was as loud as if there had been an explosion.
Two seconds later there was the sound of another safety being released, and upon hearing this, Jamaal froze.
"Who's was that?" he demanded.
"Jamaal, you have the right to remain silent."
Jamaal's eyes widened, and as he turned around, his mouth fell open in shock as he saw Issam pointing a gun at him.
"W...what?" he stammered out.
"Anything you say, can and will be held against you in a court of law." Issam paused in his walking, to kick Laith's gun to him, waiting until Laith was standing before he began to advance towards Jamaal.
Jamaal backed up against the wall.
"You have got to be kidding me?!" he exclaimed in astonishment as Issam flashed his own badge.
"You have the right to an attorney. If you cannot afford one, one will be appointed to you."
At that moment the door opened, and Sami, Jafar, and ten other men swarmed inside, Sami and Jafar pulling out their guns, and the others pinning down Jamaal's men.
As Issam finished rattling off the Miranda rights, Jamaal's face got paler and paler.
"Do you understand these rights as I have read them to you?" Issam asked, and when Jamaal remained silent, he took a step forward, holding the gun in position as if to shoot at Jamaal's heart. "Answer."
"Yes." Jamaal said in barely a whisper.
"Good. Now it's your choice to come easily or not." He finished, pulling out a pair of handcuffs, and Jamaal swallowed before he straightened up.
"Wow. Bravo. Good job Issam! I have to say I did not see this coming!" Jamaal shook his head, slowly clapping his hands. "My right hand man for years! My confidante. You know everything. Must have taken immense dedication to your job to play such a part. I take my hat off to you. And Laith of course! That was a surprise too!" he gave a low bow before straightening back up, his gun dangling from his fingers, and both Issam and Laith tightened their hold on their own weapons.
"Don't try anything." Laith warned, and Jamaal's eyes flickered towards Sami, who was blocking the door, and Jafar who was next to him, his gun raised, and pure hatred in his eyes.
"I would be stupid to try to get away now wouldn't I? You have all the information and proof you need to put me away for life. Probably recordings, and videos, and pictures and documents. I must say, I am very impressed. I see there is nothing else to do but turn myself over."
"That's a good idea." Issam said, and as Jamaal began to walk, the armed men followed him, their guns still raised. He came to a stop in front of them, and lifted a finger.
"And to think! Sami is an agent too! Did you know that Hud? That's pretty funny!" he exclaimed, turning to look at Hudayfah, his eyes flickering over Jenna, who was holding onto Hudayfah's arm.
"Hysterical." Hudayfah said, pushing Jenna away as Jamaal walked towards him.
"And to think! If I hadn't been so bent on taking my revenge on Muhsin, I might have been stashed away somewhere in Europe with all of Hudayfah's money, living happily ever after!" he exclaimed again, and it was not hard for anyone to tell that he was starting to freak out.
"Let's go Jamaal. Put your gun down." Issam said gently.
"One moment Issam. I'm getting sentimental! Hudayfah. I just wanted to tell you how much I enjoyed these past few months of playing cat and mouse with you! You don't know the immense pleasure I got from getting information out of your cousin! You know, it's probably because of your involvement with Jenna that I finally got busted. And you see, I don't do too well in not getting my revenge." He said quietly, raising the gun towards Hudayfah.
"Don't do it Jamaal. I'll shoot!" Laith shouted, and Jamaal give a ghost of a smile.
"What does it matter if I get out of here alive or dead? My life is already over."
"It doesn't have to be like this." Hudayfah said in a calm voice, and Jamaal smiled again.
"You're right Hudayfah. It didn't." he glanced down at the gun in his hand, before looking back up. "Sorry love."
At first no one understood what he meant, but by the time they realized what he intended to do, it was too late, and by the time Hudayfah and Issam had reached him, he had already pointed the gun at Jenna, and pulled the trigger.
