What did he mean by that?
He was never wrong?
The only thing I could refer from that was that he'd been the one to select me for Infant Care.
But he didn't know me. The few minutes we'd been in each other's presence and I'd carried Jasmine didn't mean anything.
He was drawing parallels between lines that didn't exist.
I needed to talk to him.
I quickly stepped out through the door that still hadn't closed. I looked around but couldn't find him. Pursing my lips, I continued my search, this time for Rafe and not Anya.
But to no avail. The room was too big and there were just too many people.
I finally gave up and sat down on a seat which adjusted itself around me. I ran my hands through my hair that had come out of the braid a long time ago. Sighing, I rubbed my face once. This was ridiculous.
I jumped when a trill sounded throughout the room. I blinked and watched as everyone headed together in one direction.
I blinked and got up to follow them.
Where were they going?
I joined the crowd and looked as people opened their boxes and pulled out something transparent and small. I couldn't get a proper look. Then I realised that I didn't have my box.
Pressing a hand to my forehead, I turned to head towards where I'd last seen it.
But people kept coming in the way. The Humans ignored me and I was able to push past them easily, but the C'Riel would stop and stare at my hair (yes, I know, it's very red), then they'd cringe away as if I was going to touch them.
Letting out a huff of frustration, I carefully manoeuvred around them.
I wasn't going to touch them, why did they behave like it was something foul?
I came to a complete stop in front of a navy blue suit. My eyes went up...and up.
Fire and coal.
Amber and black.
Now I find him, I thought, sardonically.
He jerked his chin in the direction opposite to where I was heading, "The rest rooms are that way."
Rest rooms? Was that where we were going?
"I left my box," I said, flustered as I carefully edged past him.
I quickly headed towards the sofa and let out a sigh of relief when I saw that Freesia and Wolf were still there. Waiting.
Both of them looked behind me before looking back at me. Wolf silently handed me my box.
"Thanks," I said, letting out a sigh of relief.
"That Rafe?" Wolf asked, jerking his chin to somewhere behind me.
I looked behind me and stilled. Rafe had followed me and was standing in his usual way; legs spread, arms crossed. Somehow this time it seemed...threatening.
I nodded, clearing my throat, "Rafe, this is W-" I started but Wolf cut me off.
"Reid," Wolf introduced himself, his grey eyes cold.
Rafe nodded, almost bored.
"Freesia," I said pointing to her and then at Rafe, "This is Rafe."
Freesia threw him a small smile, "I think I can pronounce your name just fine." She said.
I pressed my lips together to stop a smile from forming. She was talking about the time in the Hover when Rafe had been asked his name and he'd replied that we wouldn't be able to pronounce his name.
Rafe smirked back in reply.
"You still cannot pronounce it. Rafe is what she calls me." He said, tilting his head towards me.
I held up my hands in surrender, "Guilty." I said.
Freesia threw me a smile. A little uncertain, but still friendly.
"Shall we?" Wolf asked, his voice sounding like I'd never heard it before.
Hard...Cruel.
Freesia and I met each other's gaze with raised eyebrows.
Then we looked at Wolf and Rafe, both of whom were in state of trying to kill each other with their eyes.
Testosterone, Freesia mouthed at me.
I nodded fervently.
Clearing my throat, I nudged Wolf and he broke his glare-down with Rafe and looked at me.
He then blinked, "You're tall, Red." He told me, his hand dropping to my head.
I scowled pushing his hand off, "Damn nickname." I muttered, a sudden pang striking inside me, reminding me of Ren.
Wolf laughed, "Red it is then."
I threw him another scowl over my shoulder as I took Freesia by the arm and we headed towards the rest room.
"Why are we going to a rest room?" I whispered to Freesia.
She leaned towards me and said, "They eat and brush their teeth together. Some sort of tradition. Don't ask."
I blinked, "I don't have my brush with me." I whispered.
She threw me a funny look, "Your cleaners are inside your box. You don't need your toothbrush."
My cleaners?
I blinked, but held my tongue, figuring I would find out what it was soon anyway.
When I entered the large room that had rows of small stalls that were separated by white dividers that were the length of my arm. There were ten such rows and each row had twenty small sink-like structures, where one ten was attached to the other ten of the sinks, in such a way that they faced each other. But we wouldn't be able to see the faces of the people in front of us because there was a large divided to separate us. But we would be able to see the person beside us.
People already stood in certain spots while the other remained empty.
"Pick a spot and it will be yours." Rafa told us, but when I turned he was looking at me. I looked forward again and Anya walked towards us, her eyes on Rafe.
I stepped out of her way and headed randomly towards a stall and Wolf took my right and Freesia took my left.
A small Identity Screen shot out from the side of the sink-like structure which had a small opening on top.
I sighed. There was a damn Identity Screen everywhere.
I ran my bracelet over it and the words Ms. Hills appeared on the white divider in front of me. I shook my head, a small smile lifting my lips.
I can't go anywhere without them knowing who I was.
"These are so cool." Wolf said but it sounded more like, 'Seese sar so sool.'
I turned to throw him a look and realised that he had something in his mouth. I opened my own box and found a smaller box that contained small a U-shaped transparent looking material separated in the middle, as if one half was for my upper jaw and the second for my lower jaw. I touched them and they flexed with every press of my fingers.
Was that supposed to go into my mouth?
I looked at Freesia and she showed me that I was to spread the gel onto the cleaner (that was placed to the side in every stall) and place the cleaner inside my mouth, against my teeth. They automatically melded to her teeth, and she shut her mouth.
I sighed.
I want my toothbrush.
I pouted as I looked down at my cleaners. Sighing, I placed it in my mouth after applying the gel, like Freesia had.
It melded to my teeth and I experienced the most funny feeling. It was like tiny brushes had materialised inside the material and they were cleaning my teeth.
If I stared laughing, this would become a mess. So I refrained from moving my mouth.
"This is so weird," I said, and it came out sounding absolutely ridiculous. Wolf huffed out a laugh and Freesia sniggered. Then the three of us lost control because of how ridiculous we sounded while laughing.
Tears leaked down our eyes and I held onto Wolf, scared I'd fall to the ground.
"I'm sooling!" Wolf said, wiping away drool from his mouth.
I threw my head back at that, laughing so hard my stomach muscles cramped.
Freesia was almost on the floor. I caught her and we leaned over the sinks and to spit out the foam that had collected in our mouths. The cleaners automatically came off our teeth and we washed them, our shoulders still shaking a little as we exchanged amused glances.
I placed my cleaner back into its box and leaned forward to rinse my mouth with the water that shot right into our mouths from the small opening in the sink-like structure.
After I spat the water out, I straightened and watched as a compartment opened in front of me. My brows furrowed.
"Your cleaners stay at your stall." Freesia said.
"Oh." I responded, and placed my cleaners into the compartment, which closed immediately.
I stretched then, yawning. I was tired.
"I'll catch you guys later." I said to Wolf and Freesia.
They wished me good night as I walked away with my box in my hand and my communication device in my pocket.
I stepped into the circular elevator and pressed the key that took me to my floor. When the door rotated open, I stepped into my corridor and walked to my door. The Identity Screen popped up and I ran my bracelet over it. The door opened and I entered, catching another yawn with my hand. I blinked away the moisture that formed in my eyes because of the yawn and placed the box on the table and removed the device from my pocket and placed it next to the box.
Then I went to my bed and crawled into it, and sighed when the heat turned on and warmed me.
This was definitely the best way to fall asleep, I thought, sleepily.
Then I heard a tone that shook me awake.
"What was that?" I whispered in surprise.
"You have received a message on your communication device, would you like me to read it out?" The computer in my room asked.
I blinked and stretched back with a smile. I didn't need to get up and go and check the device.
"Yes, please." I told the computer.
"Be ready at seven tomorrow." The computer told me, reading out the message.
I frowned.
Who was this?
"Is there a name?" I ask and the computer tells me that there isn't.
"Would you like to reply?" The computer asked.
"Yes, ask if this is Wolf?" I directed.
"'Is this Wolf?', shall I proceed to reply?" The computer asked.
I confirmed.
A few seconds later, I heard the tone again.
This time, the computer read out the message on its own.
"Who is Wolf?"
My jaw dropped.
I got off the comfortable bed and went to the device. It showed me a small box with what I assumed was a card ID on top and three words in the middle of the box.
Who is Wolf? The message said.
This couldn't be Freesia, she knew who Wolf was. This couldn't be Kylee, as I had her card ID. And this definitely wasn't Wolf.
So I pressed the option that allowed me to reply.
Alphabets appeared on the screen and I pressed one letter and the all the words I could possibly require based on the text I received, appeared.
I chose the words I wanted.
Who is this?
The device asked me if I would wish to send the typed text. I clicked the confirmation option and watched as the message I'd sent got added to the screen.
The reply came in a few seconds later.
You would not be able to pronounce my name.
A smile, unbidden curved my lips. I shook my head.
Stalker. I typed and sent to him, my smile growing a little wider.
Then I panicked.
Why did I send that to him? I didn't know him enough to flirt with him. Was I flirting? No, I wasn't. I was just being friendly. Yes. Of course.
Oh, who was I fooling?
When I'd given up on him replying, a minute or two later my device let out a tone and the smooth screen lit up blue and showed me what he'd sent.
I took my phone to my bed and sat down, pressing on the message to see it.
I am the District Leader. I have the card ID of everyone in this District. I do not need to stalk.
Was that a joke? Was he saying he didn't need to stalk because he already had all the information?
His almost-serious-maybe-funny response made me want to poke fun at him.
O Mighty One, you rule over us all. I said in response.
Then I prayed that I hadn't scared him away.
By the time I could count twenty, I got my reply.
It would have been funny, had it not been true.
I snickered, knowing he was joking this time.
You consider yourself King, then? I asked, grinning. I could almost imagine the straight face he would reply with.
I think I prefer...Mighty One, was his response.
I shook my head, my smile still wide.
And here I thought you didn't have a sense of humour. I sent back.
Humour? What is that? Was his response.
I blinked then responded truthfully.
I can't tell if you're joking or not. I typed.
His response was quick this time.
Joking.
Man of many words, I thought.
Then I typed, Remove me from Infant Care.
No, was his reply.
What makes you think I'm even good at it?
What makes you think you are not? He asked.
Rafe, I'm serious. I don't think I can handle children. What if I hurt them?
This is precisely why you are perfect for the position. If you were not worrying now, I would be doubting my judgement. He said.
I rubbed a hand against my forehead.
Rafe, I've never handled children before. I sent.
We will speak tomorrow about this.
What if we don't meet tomorrow? I asked in an attempt to trying to get him to keep talking so that I could convince him that he had to change his mind.
I will find you. He said.
Stalker. I sent.
Red head. He sent back.
My jaw dropped.
Has the Mighty One stooped to name-calling? I asked.
Go to sleep, Hills.
Yes, your majesty. I sent.
Then I did fall asleep. With a small smile on my face.
