I flipped through the telephone book that I had borrowed from the train station. They said this one would have the phone numbers from the east coast. I turned and scanned page after page looking for one of the many business Joseph owned and ran. Although nowadays there weren't many big corporations and business there were still plenty to have kept me busy for the last hour.
"Bingo!" I yelled and stood up on my feet and I found it. Copland Business and Money Management. I instantly regretted my outburst because every head in the station turned to me. I ducked my dirt covered head and moved on to the phone attached to the wall next to the ticket station.
I pressed the buttons, my fingers moving lightning quick. The phone only rang once before a woman that sounded like a receptionist picked up the phone.
"Hello, this is Copland Business and-"
"Yes yes I know. I need to speak with Matthias.... " I cursed myself for never asking his last name.
"You're looking for a Matthias? You mean the CFO of the entire company Matthias Masters?" She laughed on the other end. "He's very busy. I can't just interrupt him saying some girl called to talk to you."
"Well tell him it's Jessica I'm sure that he'll take the call." I said angrily. The girl huffed.
"Alright give me a second." The music that told me I was on hold began to play. I pressed my lips together. I didn't have a lot of time. I was out of quarters for the phone. I tapped my foot on the ground impatiently. "Hello? Sorry about that miss I'll transfer you to him." She said hurriedly and the phone beeped once more.
"Jessica?!" I heard Matthias's deep voice through the phone.
"Yes it's me."
"Where are you? Is Joseph with you." He rushed.
I winced. "No. He's not. I had to leave alone. But I thought that if I got out, then no one would have to worry about me when they're trying to get out or we go and get them." I hated myself for leaving him but I thought it was the only option at the time. I had been rethinking my decision ever since.
"No that's good. It's probably better this way." He paused. "Where are you I'll send someone to come and get you."
"I'm still in California Matthias. But I'm at a train station. But that probably doesn't do much good, I have no money to buy a ticket."
"Alright no stay there. Do you know what the station is called? I can have someone come and get you."
"It's just California avenue train station. I'm 2 towns north of where Romano's compound is if that helps." I racked my brain to find any other landmarks that could help him find my location.
"Yeah no that helps. I believe I know where you are. Wait there at the station. I have people there waiting for Joseph. I can send someone to come and get you."
"Alright I can do that I'll wait here at the phones."
"Perfect, remember that you-" his voice abruptly ended. I frowned and rolled my eyes. The time my quarters had bought me ran out. I hung up the phone and scanned my area briefly for any loose change. I could only imagine what Matthias was thinking. That I was a crazy woman that had hung the phone up on him.
I leaned my forehead on the wall next to me and rested my head. I still had a pounding head ache. Probably half from dehydration, and half from sleep deprivation.
I felt a hand tap my on the shoulder and I froze. I slowly turned around bracing myself for the worst. Instead I found a young woman smiling up at me. She held the hand of a young girl, and bounced a giggling baby on her hip. My guards instantly fell and I smiled at the young mother. She couldn't be much older than me.
"Sorry to bother you, I just needed to use the phone." Her smile turned from happy to apologetic.
"Oh don't worry about it." I waved her off. "I was finished anyways."
"Mommy!" The girl whispered "that's the girl on TV." The woman frowned and looked back up to my face. I blanched and moved run.
"You're right Arabella." The mother said back to the young girl. "Sorry about that. I think we saw you on the news. I'm sorry about your fathers funeral. I don't know who would do something like that to a church." She shook her head as if feeling the shame of the bombing herself.
My confused and frazzled brain couldn't comprehend what she was saying. It just knew that she recognized me and that couldn't be good. I pushed my way passed her and moved on without saying another word.
Only once I was in the safety of one of the girls bathroom stalls did my brain start to process what the girl had said. The news must have been talking about the church blowing up after my fathers funeral. I don't know what my picture would be doing floating around.
The solitude of the stall brought me comfort knowing no one would come barging in here and bothering me. I stayed in there listening to the sounds of my breath coming in and out of my mouth.
My eyes snapped open when I heard commotion happening outside the bathroom. I jolted off the toilet seat when guns were fired. As much as I wasted to stay in the safety of my stall my body opened the door and peaked around the wall to see what was going on. There were multiple mean looking guys holding guns in the air shouting thinks I couldn't possibly hear over the shouts of the crowd.
I slipped out of the bathroom when a large group ran passed me. I breathed in relief when the large exit doors were within sight. I cringed again when I saw that the doors to my freedom were blocked by more men in black.
The crowd I was in the middle of was pushed back not able to escape. I groaned. My head was pounding so hard I couldn't even see straight.
The sound of Romano's voice over the intercom knocked me out cold of my self wallowing. I didn't have time for that anymore. "Jessica. My darling girl, what a fun game this has been but we are all tired of it." He sounded almost playful at the beginning of his statement but as he continued he sounded more and more angry. "Nevertheless we will keep playing, and I have a feeling I have almost won. Good thing too my son was beginning to miss you." His sick laugh sounded around the building.
The blood drained from my face. He was right I was trapped. I had no where to turn, but giving myself up to that monster was not an option. I racked my brain to try and find a solution to this impossible predicament. The only thing that I could come up with was to slowly make my way to the telephones that I was supposed to be meeting Joseph's guys at.
I ducked my head and moved inch by inch in that direction. I mumbled apologies as I bumped into people. They didn't hear me over the noise that was echoing off the walls of the station. I finally made it close to the wall and lifted my head so I could see if there were any familiar faces there.
I nearly screamed when I felt my upper arm grabbed and a hand wrapped over my mouth.
"Miss Jessica. You don't need to fear me. I was sent my Matthias Masters to retrieve you and take you back to the plane." I sighed in relief as he whispered the words in my ear. He removed his hands from my body and moved to stand beside me. "We must move quickly."
I nodded in approval. As we moved forward to a destination unknown to me more big men surrounded me. They all wore dark greens and browns. I followed them praying that so many big men in one place wouldn't attract any unwanted attention.
We kept moving for a little while until shouts began to get louder and guns started going off. I risked a glance over my shoulder to see what had changed. My eyes widened when I saw that it wasn't some people being rebellious and challenging Romano's men. No they had spotted us. And they were coming fast.
"Run!" I yelled as we all broke out into a sprint to where ever it was we were headed. My lungs were burning for the need of more air then I could suck in. Guns continued to go off until I was at the back of the group everyone else on the ground with bullets.
I screamed as pain shot up my left leg. I nearly fell to the floor but my other leg refused to let me fall. So I hopped until that too failed and I fell to the floor.
I let the tears fall down my cheeks partly because of my failure and partly because of the immense waves of pain spreading throughout my leg and up to the rest of my body. I knew it was just a bullet but it felt like my leg was on fire. I whimpered and tried my luck at crawling away but that too didn't work.
I cried out in pain as I was hauled off the floor by the same man as had found me moments before. He ran with me in his arms and surprisingly caught up with the rest of them. Strangely enough the guns had stopped firing. They were only pursuing on foot.
We ran down a out of the main hall and down a flight of stairs until we reached a parking garage. There 2 large black escalade were waiting for us. I was thrown in to the first one along with the man carrying me. The rest were behind us.
"Step on it!" The man yelled and the car lurched to life speeding away.
The man was huffing and puffing and swearing as he tried to apply pressure to my wound. "Thank you." I said. I licked my lips. They had dried out from breathing so hard. "For not leaving me there."
He chuckled in between his labored breaths. "Hey I figured it would put me in the good books with the boss." I laughed slightly with him.
"Gah! You're loosing too much blood. You're going to pass out." He took his hands off my leg to rip a piece of his shirt off. As soon as he removed his hands all the blood pooled there rushed out.
I gasped at the sudden pressure of the cloth that was tied tightly around the hole the bullet made. It was still in there. I felt like I could feel it.
I closed my eyes to try and block out the pain. "Hey." He put his hands on either side of my face. "I need you to stay awake. Can't have you unconscious for when you see boss again. He's waiting for us at the rendezvous point."
"What's your name?" I asked him.
"Trevor miss."
"Trevor. I'll be sure to put in a good word for you." I smiled at him through my clenched teeth.
"Thank you miss Jessica." He laughed and gripped my hand tightly. "That would be much appreciated."
"Good. You deserve it. I owe you my life." It felt weird saying that considering I was only 18. Almost 19 but still. "And it's just Jessica."
I struggled to keep my eyes open as he talked to me. Eventually though they dropped closed and opening them proved to me too difficult. So I left them that way and for the second time this month I fell into the world of unconsciousness.
