Dani stared at Jax across her face ashen, "What did you just say?"
"I said we found a male body," Jax repeated. "We don't know if it's Billy."
"Dani are you okay?" Freddy asked, placing a hand on her shoulder and causing her to jump.
"What are you doing?" she asked him. "Why you sneaking up on me?"
Belcher shook his head, "I told you not to scare her. He said this nark looked like he was giving you a hard time."
"What have I told you about keeping your hands to yourself?" Dani warned Freddy, whose hand was still resting on her shoulder.
"Oops...sorry. I forgot. Dani has a safety circle around her," Freddy joked.
"I thought it was a bubble," Belcher piped in, pressing a finger forward and pretending to pop an imaginary bubble.
"Hey you two," Jax raised an eyebrow at the Booty Pirates, "Do you mind getting lost?"
"Why? So you can interrogate her? What are you up to nark?" Freddy asked. "She doesn't carry pot."
"Pot? What the hell are you two stone heads talking about?" Jax asked, looking at Dani for help.
Both Belcher and Freddy each grabbed one of Dani's hands and shouted, "United we stand."
"Against narks!" Freddy finished.
"These idiots," Jax muttered, standing up.
"What have I told you about harassing Dani?" Oliver, the owner, yelled running forward and extracting Dani's hands from the two Booty Pirates. "The last waitress quit because of you two. Hands to yourself or I'll kick you out!"
"That was years ago. You should really let it go," Belcher mumbled.
"Enough!" Dani slammed her hands against the plastic covered table she was sitting at. She hated when people touched her and now Belcher, Freddy, and even Oliver had grabbed her bare hands. She didn't want to see their nightmares. On top of that, her mind was still reeling over the fact that Billy could be dead.
"I can't deal with this right now. Jax, let's go."
Jax stood up and she handed him his phone which he had left on the table, her fingers brushing up lightly against his. She cursed at yet another skin-to-skin contact. What was wrong with her? Normally, she was much more careful about not letting anyone touch her...not even accidentally. Was Billy's disappearance causing her to be careless?
Once they were sitting in Jax's car, he turned to Dani who was biting her bottom lip, "You really shouldn't be at the crime scene with me so just stay in the car once we get there, got it?"
"What if it's really him?" she asked. "I told you Derek did something. Why didn't you listen to me from the beginning?"
"We still don't know if it's Billy. Stop making crazy accusations just because you don't like the guy."
Dani shook her head, "You don't know Derek. If you did, you wouldn't think it's so crazy. For all you know, he could be the Maestro as well."
"The Maestro doesn't go after men," Jax reminded her.
"That we know of," Dani interjected. "I found classical music in his apartment."
"Lots of people listen to classical music," Jax was driving up to the scene. "Again, he doesn't go after men."
"A bloody shirt and classical music. That's not some coincidence. That's proof!"
"Dani, I'll play along with your theory and dig out his trash later. Does that satisfy you?" Jax exited his car and pointed at her once more, "Stay in the car."
Dani looked away, pretending to ignore him. Jax saw his partner Roberto Montoya flagging him over.
"Do we have an identity, yet?" Jax asked.
"Not unless you can identify someone without a face," Roberto answered. He walked closer to the body where forensics was still taking pictures. "There was no ID on him either. For all we know, this could be the work of Los Lobos Locos."
"Whoa...it's a good thing I didn't just eat," Jax answered, covering his mouth and nose with the back of his hand. "What happened? Brutal murderer or wild animals?"
"Well it sure as hell wasn't a chupacabra...or maybe it was," Roberto shoved a piece of gum in his mouth and looked in the direction of Jax's car. "You bringing your girlfriend to a crime scene? This isn't exactly the best place to take a first date."
"What?" Jax turned to see Dani, stepping out of the vehicle.
"No, and she's not my girlfriend."
"That's too bad," Roberto said under his breath. "It's about time you moved on."
Jax didn't hear his partner as he headed back towards Dani's direction, "What part of 'stay in the car' don't you understand?"
"I just wanted to see if it was him. You were taking too long," Dani said.
"Well it doesn't matter since we're going to let DNA identify him," Jax blocked Dani's path. "There wasn't any identification on him and it'll take a few days to figure out who our John Doe is. His face isn't recognizable. We can't say for sure if it's Billy or not."
Dani shook her head, refusing to believe what Jax was telling her, "Just let me take a look."
"Trust me, you don't want to see. It's pretty gruesome. Listen, let me just take you home and we'll go dumpster diving or trash digging or whatever you want, okay?"
"Jax, I think you should let me take a look."
"Why are you being so difficult? I told you it's not a good idea, Panda Eyes."
"I'm not the one being difficult. You are. I told you that he was my friend. You think I wanted to have that nightmare? That I wanted to see him scared and in pain?"
"You said she's not your girlfriend but you two sure do fight like a couple," Roberto's voice caught both Dani and Jax's attention.
Dani took a few steps forward. Her foot got caught in a small hole that had been hidden by some overgrown grass, causing her to fall forward. Roberto quickly reached out and grabbed her waist.
"You alright there?"
In shock, Dani could only nod as she felt Roberto slowly help her gain her balance. As soon as he released her hands, she shoved them in her sweatshirt and mentally cursed herself for allowing yet another person to touch her.
"She's pretty, Jax. There's no reason to lie about having a new girlfriend," Roberto teased.
Jax snorted, "Girlfriend? More like stalker. Do you know what she did to get my home address? Besides, she's crazy. She thinks she can—"
Without thinking, Dani shoved Jax and said, "I'll be in the car. How much longer will you be?"
Robert smirked, "Riiiight...she's not your girlfriend. Listen, I have things covered here. Just take your girl- I mean friend home."
Jax didn't want to argue. He gave his partner his thanks before getting back into the car with Dani.
"You were going to tell him my secret, weren't you?" Dani asked.
Jax gave an uncomfortable shrug, "No."
"Liar."
"I'm not lying," his voice automatically rose. He cursed. "It was a slip of the tongue. Besides, it's not like I actually said anything and he wouldn't have believed me anyway."
"You think I'm some kind of freak, don't you? Or a liar?" Dani asked.
"No, I don't think that. I wouldn't say I was your partner if I didn't believe you. Why do we keep having this conversation?"
"You know who you remind me of?"
"A model?" Jax joked, trying to get her to lighten up.
"My father," Dani answered. "He wasn't a religious man but he prayed every night."
"If he prayed every night, wouldn't that make him religious?"
Dani shook her head, "No. He didn't believe in God. I asked him once why he prayed and his answer to me was, 'Just in case.' I'm your just in case. Your backup plan. You don't really believe me but what if there's a sliver of a chance that I'm telling the truth? You want what I know. Am I right?"
Jax frowned, "No, you're wrong."
Dani scoffed, crossing her arms and looking away, "I should just stop with trying to find out what happened to Billy. It's making me less focused. Five different people touched me today. Five! Do you know what that means? That I could be seeing any one of their fears tonight. Not to mention anyone else who I've accidentally touched this week."
"Dani, I mean it when I say that you're wrong. Even a sliver of belief is enough for me. I do believe you can see people's nightmares. It's the only explanation for how you knew that gang member had that necklace in his pocket. The problem is that your gift isn't very helpful unless it gives us more clues. Whether it's about Billy for your sake or the Maestro for mine."
The rest of the trip was quiet and when they arrived at her apartment building, Dani refused to have him walk her to her apartment door.
"Listen, call me if you need me, okay?"
Dani ignored him and walked to her apartment, taking a moment to stop in front of Billy and Derek's door.
"You looking for something?" Derek asked behind her.
"You won't get away with it you know," Dani mumbled.
"What did you say?"
Dani felt her fists clench and she looked Derek straight in the eye before repeating herself, "I know what you did. You won't get away with it."
Derek's eyes widened and an emotion Dani couldn't quite identify flashed in his eyes. The corner of his mouth curled up before he responded, "What I did?" He took a step forward, "You sure are brave today. I have to admit, I like seeing you stop acting like a frightened mouse all the time."
Dani gritted her teeth, "Don't think you can get away with it."
His smile faltered a tiny bit, "You really should be nicer to your neighbors. I'd hate for you to regret being so rude."
"Let me know when you hear from Billy," Dani called over her shoulder as she walked to her door.
"I'll do that but who knows? Maybe you'll see him sooner than you think," Derek answered before stepping into his apartment.
"Jerk," Dani muttered.
Dani spent her night coloring. It was therapeutic for her and she had started when she was a teen. A counselor had suggested it. Dani loved to draw but coloring was a relaxing hobby that let her turn her brain off for a few moments. Unlike when she sketched, she didn't have to worry about proportions or something looking realistic. She just focused on the colored pencil in her hand going back and forth. Eventually she fell asleep, a map color still in her grasp.
The sound of a piano playing drowned out the crackling of the fire to his right. In front of him was a woman, face down on the ground. Her whimpers caused him to smile as he ran a hand over her tangled hair.
"Don't cry. I'm just here for your heart. Don't you want to give it to me? Don't you love me?" he asked as his other hand rubbed the handle of the knife he carried.
He lifted his hand, now covered in blood, and held it up to his nose. He took a deep breath, inhaling the pungent scent of fresh blood.
"Mmmm...it's a smell I can never get over. I wonder if your heart smells as sweet."
"Stop this," she whispered.
"Do you think it's that easy? That I can just stop because you say so? Just don't do it?" a bitter laugh filled her ears. "Are you ready for me to take what I want? To take what's mine?"
Her sobs grew louder as he slowly turned her over to reveal a bloody Dani Deleon.
Dani woke up gasping for air. She grabbed her cell phone which was on her nightstand and dialed the number to Jax Michaels. She didn't give him a chance to speak. As soon as the call connected, the words rattled out of her, "The Maestro. I saw his dream again. He's...he's coming for me."
"What are you saying, Panda Eyes?"
"That I'm the Maestro's next victim.
