It was exactly 11:37 pm when the first gunshot could be heard at Adriano's party. It was shot by Lucio at Adamo's father, Casmiro. Lucio had corner him outside the venue to talk to him and unexpectedly shot him from a very short distance. Lucio did not bat an eyelid at Casmiro's pleading to save him. In fact, he shot him twice more for good measure, the gruesome sight laid out before his eyes was something he had waited a long time to see.
It took some time for Casmiro's heart to eventually stop beating but Lucio did not wait around to see. Instead, he headed back inside to finish the job he had just started. The music had been loud but he knew the gunshots could probably be heard faintly by some of the people who had attended. He could tell it had stirred a couple of individuals but not enough for them to speak up.
"I want to thank everyone for coming here tonight." Adriano smiled handsomely at the crowd of people looking at him.
He caught eyes with his father who gave him a short nod, a signal that he had done what was planned, before heading off into what would soon become a battle field. Adriano gave a short speech and then made his way out of view from most. He walked up the winding stairs and onto the next level of the room, looking down at what was about to unfold.
Before anyone could stop them, members of the Morreti gang opened fire on the DeLuca family, who were all dispersed in the extravagant ballroom. The loud noise of the shots echoed throughout the room along with the cries of people. People ran in all directions, desperate to get away. Lucio had made sure Carmela, Maria and the rest of the women in the family were already getting away from the scene safely with their children.
Mateo fell to the floor with a thud unheard by his brothers. Two of the other DeLuca brothers had also been shot while Adamo tried to make a quick escape, dragging Angela along with him hurriedly. Mateo's glass smashes as it fell from his hands, his wife kneeled over him screaming with horror. She was unable to think of anything but the sight before her eyes, her husband lying limp on the ground. She would not move from her spot, despite her Luisa's desperate pleading. Her screams could be heard all around the ballroom but blended in with everyone else's.
Angela could not hide her shock at what was unfolding around her. Suddenly, Adriano's words from minutes ago made sense to her.
"Hurry the fuck up!" Adamo screamed at her. He had his gun out and subtly pointed into her side so that she didn't get any ideas about running away from him.
He gripped onto her arm tighter and looked around in an attempt to scope out where he could leave but the place was filled with Adriano's men, blocking all exits he could find. Gunshots were fired just then very near the pair. Both ducked and Angela tried desperately to calm her nerves. She had never been in a situation as gut-wrenching as this. No one was safe.
Adamo lead her upstairs in hopes to find somewhere to hide until things calmed down. He knew that all of his family were the only targets here but he was already thinking up a way to get himself out of this mess- Angela.
While Adriano's men had already gotten the two DeLuca brothers and their father, they were all looking around for Adamo and Alessandro. Adriano was the one to spot Alessandro who instantly turned a couple of shades whiter than he already when he saw him.
"Alessandro!" Adriano's booming voice echoed all through the empty ballroom, even Angela and Adamo could hear it from the room they had vacated. Adriano shot near him, not wanting to shoot him just yet. He needed to find out where Angela was first.
"Alessandro!" Adriano called, louder this time. Alessandro had no other option now but to continue on running or turn around and face this man.He turned around quickly to face Adriano, his gun ready to shoot but was met with a laugh from Adriano. Alessandro's shaking hands tried their best to not lose their grip on the gun but it was difficult in the state that he was in, his brain unable to process the events of tonight.
"Get down on the ground." Adriano's voice was calm after his laughter.
Did Alessandro think he was going to be able to shoot him? He really was just an unexperienced kid. He put his trust in the DeLuca's, he betrayed Adriano and his family for them and look where it had got him now. He was going to end up dead in the end like the rest.
"Get down on the ground now!" Adriano roared before shooting at Alessandro's leg.
Alesandro cried out loudly in pain as he fell to the floor. Adriano rushed over to him and grabbed his head so that he looked up at him.
"Where is she?" Adriano's voice came out almost as a growl.
"I don't know." Alessandro mumbled.
"Yes you do. And you're going to tell me."
"I told you already I don't kn-"
"Tell me!" Adriano said through gritted teeth. He pointed his gun at Alessandro's head which caused him to panic and squirm.
"Okay, okay. Adamo took her, but I don't know where they are now."
Just then, Mike and Franco came through one of the doors leading into the ballroom.
"I have to find Angela, do whatever you want with him."
Adriano stood up straight from where he was kneeling over Alessandro and ran up the main stairs in the ballroom to find Adamo. He saw Mike and Franco drag Alessandro outside.
Adamo could hear him coming for the two of them and dug his gun closer into Angela's side as Adriano's loud footsteps neared the room. Angela tried her best to keep herself from hyperventilating as she waiting to find out what was going to happen next.
Adrenaline was rushing through Adamo and he calmed his shaky nerves. He was holding his breath, waiting also for the arrival of Adriano but was surprised to hear his footsteps move past the closed door they were behind and towards the end of the corridor. The footsteps could be heard again walking past the door. Angela's breath hitched in her throat and she tried not to cry. She didn't want to think about the end and closed her eyes shut in an attempt to stop her thoughts.
The footsteps past the door and could be heard faintly then, Adriano had decided to look somewhere else. Adamo wouldn't be as foolish as to hide somewhere where he could be easily found.
Adamo didn't care what it took; he was going to get out of this alive. He had a plan in his head now and many options to take if he needed to. He dragged Angela up by the hair and stood her in front of him so she could look into his eyes when he spoke.
"Listen to me Angela, you so much as open your mouth in the next couple of minutes I swear to god I will put a bullet through your skull faster than you can regret ever going against me." He spoke quietly, his words causing a look of terror to form over her features. She nodded her head weakly and followed his lead.
Adamo open the door quietly and looked out to find Adriano was nowhere to be seen. He was most likely looking in one of the rooms down the hall and so Adamo took this as an advantage to try and escape- maybe things would be easier than he thought.
He dragged Angela roughly towards the main staircase Adriano had come up just a few moments ago. They had gotten so close to the steps when all of a sudden Adamo was ripped from Angela and fell with a thud to the floor. Adriano was on top of him now, punching and hitting wherever possible. Angela let out a loud shriek once she saw Adamo roll over and be the one injuring Adriano then.
There was blood, a lot of it in a matter of seconds since this brawl had begun. Angela scanned the floor around them in search of the gun Adamo had been using and quickly ran to retrieve it. Adamo pushed was squeezing Adriano's neck, watching as his face reddened and he clawed desperately to stop him. He saw Angela out of the corner of his eye and was quicker than she had expected.
The cold metal of the gun was something Angela could only feel for a split second. Adamo snatched it away from her and pushed her to the floor. Adriano had managed by now to blink away the clouds that had appeared in his vision. He launched himself at Adamo again but failed to catch him. Adriano stood up then, grabbed his gun and aimed it at Adamo.
"Stop right there Adriano!" Adamo said, a horrifying glint in his wide eyes.
He went from pointing the gun at Adriano to pointing it at Angela.
Adriano's face instantly paled but he held onto his gun. He watched as Adamo grabbed Angela up to have her stand beside him. His eyes zeroed in on Adamo's rough hand that was clenching onto her upper arm in a vice grip. Her soft skin was beginning to turn red. He brought her to the top of the stairs, walking sideways and not taking his eyes away from Adriano's.
"Drop your gun." Adamo's cool words were calm and dangerous.
Adriano was in a state of shock. Unable to move, he stood there, froze in his spot watching Adamo point his at her cheek.
"I said drop your fucking gun before you regret it!" Adamo spit his words out, his shouting echoed around the empty ballroom.
Angela's stomach lurched at the anticipation. She waiting for something to happen, waiting to find out her fate. She let out a small shriek once she felt Adamo press the gun right to her temple and hold her closer to him. Her eyes followed Adriano's every movement, he slowly put the gun on the ground.
Adamo's wicked laughter was the only thing that could be heard then. Adriano looked at this man, a man he once called his friend, and then at Angela. He could've shot Adamo right there and then but it would result in the loss of another important person in his life because of it. After everything, after all of this planning and plotting to get revenge, he dropped his gun. The thoughts of vengeance brewing since he was a teenager would not be worth anything if his Angela was gone.
He had lost his brother because of Adamo and he wasn't prepared to lose Angela too.
Angela was shaking but trying desperately to not let how terrified she actually was show on her face. There was a silence in the room for a minute after Adamo's laugh that was filled again when he spoke.
"See this Adriano? This was your mistake." He nodded his head towards Angela who was had locked eyes with Adriano. "You were doing great up until I set my eyes on her, I must say. You had nothing we could hold against you, but then you fucked up."
"Put down your gun Adamo, we don't need to bring Angela into this."
"We don't need to but I want to. She's not your wife or family yet, I wouldn't be breaking any of our rules if I just pulled the trigger right now and blew her brains out. After all it is an eye for an eye and you've taken more than just one brother tonight."
Adriano knew Adamo was in no mental state to make any good decisions but he also realised that whatever there was to do, something bad would come of it. He had broken out into a state of panic but was trying to keep his face void of emotion. All he could think about was Angela and how her fate was in the hands of this physcopath. She was only a few steps away from him yet unreachable.
"What do you want me to do?" Adriano had to pick his words carefully here. The suspense on waiting for Adamo to open his mouth again was killing him. So much so that he would rather Adamo point his gun at him now and shoot him instead of Angela.
Angela was thinking about a lot of things in that moment. She wondered what it would feel like when Adamo shot her, she wondered would she feel anything at all or would it be over quicker than she thought. Angela knew Adamo had won, he had Adriano right where he wanted him and knowing what Adamo had done before made her feel sure of herself that he was going to kill her- in front of Adriano no doubt.
She thought about her parents and Lucy, she thought about her own baby and what it would have been like to have her own family one day with Adriano. Without realising, silent tears fell down her face that she was unable to just simply blink away. Angela thought about Adriano and all of the times they had spent with each other: from the emerald dress she received a while after she met him to her day at Miami beach with him over the summer. It seemed the more she thought about the things that had happened, the more memories appeared in her mind but then- everything stopped.
In a matter of seconds, Lucio had appeared behind Adriano, firing at Adamo who removed his gun from Angela's head and pointed it straight at the older man. He was shot first but still had the strength in him to throw Angela behind him. She tumbled down the stairs, hitting each step on the way down.
Adriano quickly picked up his gun and shot at Adamo then too. Before they knew it, he had fallen to the floor. Lucio made his way over to his body, lying limp on the ground to make sure he wasn't breathing.
The room fell silent again and all that Adriano could hear was Angela's quite whimpering. He ran to the stairs and looked down to find her lying in a bundle at the bottom step. She moved a little and dragged her sore body towards the wall where she leaned her back against it and clutched her aching stomach.
"Adriano." She mumbled when she saw him.
He saw the blood forming on her almost white gown and how she was clutching her stomach. Then he remembered back to the last conversation they had on the phone to each other, how Angela needed to talk to him about something. He was left speechless, unsure as to whether his explanation for all of this could be a reality until she muttered her last words before closing her eyes.
"The baby."
