"We don't have many options here," Chencho was staring out the window, the two-story drop too dangerous to take. "The building next door is too far away to make a jump for it."
"So what are we going to do?" Gladys wiped away at the sweat trickling down her forehead. She was taking deep breaths as she walked in a large circle around the room they were trapped in.
"The only thing we can do," Chencho made his way to the door and placed his hands against the doorknob. His hand flew back as he sucked in air.
"It's hot isn't it? We aren't going to make it out alive, are we?"
He could hear the panic in her voice and frowned, "We're going to take the stairs. It's our only chance."
Gladys bit her lip and again looked out the window. It was too high for them to risk the fall. She placed both of her hands on her stomach and nodded.
"Hold on to my hand. We're going to have to run," Chencho reached out his hand and waited for Gladys to take it. He could see her hesitation. "I know I don't seem like it, but I'm a good guy. I'll protect you. I promise."
Gladys slowly placed her hand in his. His palm squeezed against her hand before he kicked open the door. A surge of heat blasted forth and they both turned their heads away.
"Let's go!" Chencho roared as he saw the fire greedily claiming its stake in the warehouse. The fire lapped at the walls, eating away at everything in its sight.
"I can't do this!" Gladys screamed.
"Yes you can! I'm here with you!" Chencho pulled on her hand as he jumped forward, trying to avoid the fire's deadly touch.
The heat was consuming and Gladys struggled to breath. A strangled yelp escaped her lips as she dodged some falling debris.
"The fire is spreading fast! We need to hurry!" Chencho quickened their pace and Gladys stumbled a bit.
"We're almost out!" Chencho cried.
Gladys felt her weight give in as the steps beneath her gave away. Her scream burned her throat and Chencho quickly grabbed onto her wrist with both hands. The fire was too close and she could feel herself falling to the ground below them. Chencho jumped down with her and they fell together. He cushioned her fall and moaned when his head hit the hard floor beneath them.
Gladys wanted to ask how he was but she could only cough. It was too hard to see what was around them. Black clouds of smoke swallowed them. She saw Chencho struggle to get up, his body not moving as fast as he wanted it to. He helped her up without saying a word, coughing as he looked around for an exit.
More debris was falling and he could hear the sounds of a fire truck in the distance. He let go of Gladys and covered his mouth and nose with one hand while encouraging her to do the same. They took a few steps forward and jumped back when a beam from above crashed a few feet ahead of them.
Gladys pointed towards two double doors that had to be the exit and they took two more steps forward when a loud creak caused them to look up. Another beam was coming towards them.
------- There were already rubberneckers at the warehouse, watching the building burn.
"Did you call 911?" Jax asked a teen as he exited his car.
The teen shrugged and Jax grabbed his shirt, "Call 911. Now!"
"The man over there already did," the teen said, pointing to a man who had a phone up to his ear.
"Has anyone exited that building?" Jax asked.
"How should I know?" the teen asked. "I didn't see anyone and if someone's in there...they're probably burnt to a crisp by now."
Jax shoved the teen away and opened the trunk of his car. Roberto had always made fun of Jax for carrying around three different emergency kits in his car but he was grateful because one of them held a large fire blanket. He pulled it out and ran towards the building.
"Hey! What are you doing, Mister? Stop!" the teen yelled.
Jax could hear the protests of some other onlookers but he moved forward, throwing the blanket over him. He kicked open the double doors and heat sizzled against his skin. He covered his mouth with the blanket and stepped inside.
It was hard to see as the smoke was clouding his vision but a few feet in front of him was a figure, leaning over a large metal beam. Jax ran forward and saw that it was a woman.
"Gladys!" Jax shouted.
She turned to him, relief in her face as she pointed to the beam.
"There's a man under here. We have to save him!"
Jax took a step towards her when another piece of the ceiling fell down, knocking Gladys over.
"Gladys!" Jax sprinted forward and shoved the large piece of metal that had fallen on her to the side. She was bleeding and unconscious. He placed the blanket over her and carried her towards the exit. Two firemen were coming towards the entrance and Jax made sure to show them where the man under the beam was at.
"She's pregnant," Jax told the medic that was trying to take Gladys from his arms. "You have to help her."
-------- "Roberto we have to go. Now!" Tristan rushed into Roberto's home, his cell phone in his hand. "They found Gladys!"
"They found Gladys? Let me out of here! I can't believe you left me here tied up you asshole," Roberto was struggling to stay still as Tristan untied him.
"Sorry, I just wanted to run some errands. I got a call from one of my friends that's a medic here. They just brought in Gladys to the hospital."
"The hospital? Is she okay?"
"I don't know. He didn't say much. Your partner was the one that went with her in the ambulance."
"Jax?"
"Stop repeating me," Tristan shoved at his brother-in-law. "Let's go!"
Once they reached the hospital, it became a waiting game.
"How long are we going to have to wait before they tell us something?" Tristan stood up and paced the waiting room. They had been there for hours.
Roberto sat with his head in his hands, not speaking to anyone.
"You'll have more children, Roberto. The important thing is that Gladys is safe. It's a good thing that man and Jax were there to help her," Tristan said lightly. "One of the doctors said he had a lobos locos tattoo on his arm so he was a gang member."
Jax stared at his partner. Roberto looked worn out and ragged. Gladys had been burnt and had inhaled too much smoke. She was still unconscious and Jax was waiting for Roberto to ask him how he knew where to find Gladys.
Jax cleared his throat, "Roberto?"
If he heard Jax, it was hard to tell since Roberto didn't respond.
"I'm going to find a doctor. See if we can get any news," Tristan muttered as his eyes jumped from one partner to the other.
After Tristan was gone, Jax tried once again to engage his partner, "Roberto, I'm sorry about the baby."
"You think I give a damn about that right now?"
Roberto's anger pulsated between them and Jax shook his head, "I know you do. You and Gladys have wanted a baby for years."
Roberto choked back a sob, "Why? Why is this happening to her? To our ba-bab-" He couldn't say the word.
"I'm sorry," Jax whispered but Roberto squeezed his eyes shut and his hands knotted into fists.
"When I find out who's responsible, I'm going to kill him," Roberto wiped at his reddened eyes and runny nose. "How did you know where to find her?"
There it was. The question that Jax had been dreading to hear.
"Roberto...there's something I need to tell you. It's...it's about Gladys."
Before Roberto could respond, his cell phone began ringing, "It's probably Tristan. The man can't leave me alone for five seconds." He didn't bother looking at the caller's name and answered, "Roberto here. I'm sorry...who is this? What did you ask? If I had to choose? Who the hell is this? What kind of question is that?" Roberto looked up from his phone to Jax, his face ashen. "You're lying."
"What's going on?" Jax asked.
"You're lying," Roberto repeated into his phone, his eyes still on Jax.
Jax watched as Roberto's hand fell to his side, the cell phone falling to the ground.
"Jax?"
Jax nervously licked his lips. His body felt as though it had been stretched tight and was ready to snap, "Huh?"
"Who's Carter?"
"Roberto...let me explain."
"It's a simple question. Who is Carter?"
Moments felt like hours before Jax finally answered, "He's my brother."
"You sonofabitch! This is all your fault!"
The sharp pain from Roberto's fist was no surprise. Jax staggered back, his arms dead weight at his side. Each blow was penance. He slightly smiled when he tasted his own blood pooling in his mouth. It was all penance. Losing Dani. Roberto wailing on him. He deserved it. He had looked the other way years ago and now his past was finally catching up to him.
