Evelyn had no clue on how to handle this foreign situation. A deadly gorgeous, tall, muscular man with captivating brown eyes stood before her taking complete interest on her, too much interest it is dreamed scary.
"I need to go back to my camp." She stated firmly, her eyes nervously locking on his. Unknowingly, his large frame stood taller and an emotion rushed through him, one he had never felt before.
He felt captivated by this girl in front of him and he didn't want her to leave him, not even for a moment. He wanted her to stay with him, next to him for every waking minute of each long day of survival. It's been years since he's had company, let alone someone who could understand him, and the feeling created an unknown, warm buzz in his chest. One that made him feel the content emotion he hasn't fell since his parents graced this earth.
What puzzled him though, was the stab that shot through him when she looked frightened by his touch. She looked like a small animal that saw a predator, with large eyes and her small, rigid body wondering how they were to escape their doom and that too puzzled him. Why would the girl, Evelyn, be scared of him if he was one of the same kind? Their population was rare, so rare he though them to be extinct apart from himself before she graced him with her presence.
His eyebrows furrowed at her firm words. He shook his head, the wavy, long brown stands flopping side to side with his movement. Once again from curiosity and wonder his fingers rose and touched the soft hair upon her hair and fiddled with it absentmindedly, the action calming him.
"But, you stay. With me?" He spoke, his voice much more vulnerable and confused than he suspected it to be. Evelyn detected a hint of fright in his words, an emotion he would never admit to himself.
"No, I must return to camp." She said. Her mind was racing. She had no clue on how to act upon the situation. This man in front of her had just rescued her, saved her from what could have possibly been her death and what he wanted in return was the company that she was denying him.
She felt horrible, however she also felt scared, frightened from this wild stranger.
He shook his head again, his neck craning down to look on her.
"Stay."
He could tell she was once again about to reject him so he fought hard in his brain to find the words he was thinking. "For, little, while." She opened her mouth to decline but the word no couldn't surface.
This man had been living alone, out in the jungle for God knows how many years. And judging from his actions he hasn't seen another human for a while, let along interact with something.
"Okay." The words slipped past her mouth without her consent.
Angus didn't understand the meaning of the word she just used but her body language stayed the same. Her small frame was tense and alert, but her eyes stayed soft looking up at him so he took it as she would stay with him.
He felt his lips pulling up into a smile, something he would do on a rare occasion. Having no one with you after a while gave you no reason to smile, but now he has one.
While Angus was overjoyed and ecstatic she was willingly going to stay with him, Evelyn was doubting and second guessing herself and wondering how she could be so damn stupid to agree to something so careless and dangerous.
She jumped, shocked when she felt a rough hand grab at hers softly. Before she had any time to react, Angus was pulling her after his large frame towards the dense trees and away from her cliff. She was scared, she was petrified as she walked further and further away from her dad's camp grounds but it wasn't from the stranger. No, the stranger made her feel more at ease walking through the unknown wild.
Maybe because he's strong, or because he lives here and may know where to go but whatever the reason, she picked up her pace slightly more and walked directly behind Angus through the unknown.
What surprised Angus was the comforting feeling of her small hand in his, the gentle hold being returned to his hand that tightened slightly as they walked further away from the cliff and closer to his home he'd constructed.
He felt pride swoon in him. Evelyn clutching onto Angus made him feel like he had purpose, like for once in his life someone wanted to be dependent on him. He towered over her, automatically fulfilling his desire to be the dominant of the two, the alpha male of his new family. He knew it was now his job to protect Evelyn, the mysterious girl who after so many years made him feel something other than loneliness, anger or emotionless with the only need to survive.
Sure, Angus loves living here. It is his home after all. But the sudden removal of his parents made it less enjoyable and more about staying alive, and that took some of the enjoyment he felt previously away. Until now.
Evelyn looked around her in awe. Her dads warning of not entering the jungle canopy rung through her mind, but the beauty of the scenery pushed it straight away.
The trees stood so tall and so green, the most vibrant nature she had ever seen before. Trunks of all shapes and sizes rose into the air, some springing into the fluffy canopy of leaves a few meters above her or stretching up to enormous sizes into the air a hundred meters putting everything she's ever seen in her life to shame, especially the so called jungle back home.
The small trickling of water filled her ears and glancing to the left, a small creek ran in a windy yet straight line a long way into the distance. Rocks randomly sat in the middle of the water, the moss an electric green. Varieties of nature was seen, ranging from fruit trees to small bushes to even a stray wild flower. The damp ground rose a smell of fresh rain like back home, however this one made her mind spin and call for the adventure looming in front of her.
But she knew in this beauty there was danger. Although her eyes loved the sight around her, she was not foolish enough to wander. She felt like Angus would let her if she desired to and would follow behind her, stopping her when danger approached but the jungle was his domain, not hers. She felt content and blissful clutching his large hand and walking close behind him thinking she was safe.
Angus knew they were a while off his set up but he didn't mind. He loved how Evelyn was in a trance at his world, a place he knew everything about that he could show and teach her. A possessive streak ran through him at the thought of having her with him forever, Angus failing to understand Evelyn would only stay with him temporarily for maybe an hour before she returned to her dad.
He smiled down on her as she didn't even realize him looking at her as she was entranced by the nature of his home. Her wide, big pale green eyes taking in every detail. A rustling in front of them sounded and Evelyn jumped, her feet taking an extra step as she pressed herself into his body as she cowered from the unknown fear.
Her beautiful trance was broken as she remembered the unknown place was a danger.
Angus stiffened at the feeling of her pressed to his back. Her small body felt warm in his bare skin. He was confused as to why she was wearing so many cover ups. His mom had taught him when it was hot to wear the brown shorts he was wearing now, whereas Evelyn was wearing shorts and something cladding over her torso, and rubber things on her feet.
A mice scurried along the track in front of them and Angus was puzzled at how she could be so scared at such a small and harmless creature. Mice are a regular occurrence and a great source of food when living out here and they couldn't cause any harm.
He felt her relax, disappointment flooding through him as he felt the contact dissipating as she removed herself from his protection. The only thing stopping him from reaching behind him to pull her close again was the fact she didn't remove her hand from his.
"It's only a mouse," Evelyn laughed, relief flooding her body. She had been so in love with the beauty she forgot of any possible threats until the rustle which made her jump. Evelyn was worried it would be a snake she had read about.
Evelyn knew that in this area most snakes were non-venomous however the odd one was and knowing her luck, it would be that snake she stumbled upon.
Angus loved the sound of her laughter and he found himself wanting to hear the sound much more often. They continued their walk, sometimes a sound caused Evelyn to jump but other than that it was eventless. Eventually Evelyn had gained confidence and let go of Angus' hand, much to his disappointment, and stopped every now and then to closely study an interesting plant. On many occasions, Angus would hand her a piece of fruit from a tree or some berries he regularly ate which she would critique. At one sour berry, he found himself laughing as her face screwed up from the sour flavor.
All too soon, Evelyn lost track of time and forgot Angus was a stranger, she felt the thrill for adventure desperately wanting to escape and she was giving into it.
"Home," Angus said, his husky low voice sending a pleasure able shiver down Evelyn's spine. She hadn't failed to realize Angus doesn't know what personal space is. Always in her space, he stood close. His muscled arms strained, lightly pressing into arm as she followed his outstretched finger pointing in the direction. He stood towering above her, his tones abdominals pressing lightly into her side as her gaze followed his outstretched finger to what he was pointing at. She was facing straight on to where he was pointing and she gasped in awe at the sight.
In front of her stood a large tree towering up into the air, isolated on a random chunk of soil clad land in a body of water. What she was gaping at was something from a fantasy tail, a fairy tale a dream of a six year old. But it was reality.
A huge tree fort sat in the tree, a wooden bridge made of vines and branches securely tied to tree stumps on either side. This is where Angus lives. His home.
"It's amazing." She whispered under her breath.
"Amazing?" He questioned like many times in their journey there when she had used a word he didn't recognize or understand.
"Yeah amazing." Evelyn repeated stuck in awe at the home that he made. "It's beautiful." This is a word Angus recognized, a popular choice of compliment his mom would call Angus all the time.
My beautiful boy.
Shaking his head he pushed the memory away and focused on the now.
"You're beautiful." He side quietly looking down on her. Evelyn couldn't help but feel her cheeks light up in embarrassment from his compliment. A complete, wild stranger the ability to make her blush like a little school girl.
"You cheeks," he muttered, his thumb brushing over the reddening skin. "You burning?" He questioned with confused eyes as he glanced into the sky. Although it was hot, the multitude of clouds littered in the sky provided enough protection from the glowing ball in the sky and he was confused on how she could be burning without it.
"No, no. I'm not," she muttered even more embarrassed. She stepped away from him creating space between the two to cool down but he was having none of it. He grabbed her upper arm and pulled her back towards him harshly, causing her body to fly into his. The action was much stronger then Angus expected it to be, her body moving with ease compared to what he thought.
Evelyn didn't know that Angus knew his actions was harsh and panicked. Her breathing hitched as well as her heart beat as she stared wide eyed at him, frozen in fear. I never should have been this stupid, she cursed at herself mentally. Following a stranger into a jungle, are you out of your mind?!
"Angus, please. Let go of me." Evelyn softly pleaded, not wanting to provoke him. The grip on her upper arm was tight causing her to wince from the pain. Angus furrowed his eyebrows at the request. She was so happy and now she's scared again? He wondered why.
"Angus, you're hurting me." She tried to put up a brave front but her voice cracked showing her vulnerability to him. To Angus, it felt as though he had been stabbed in his chest as she tried to move away, fear radiating from her tense body. The last thing he wanted to do was cause her harm, it wasn't his job. His job was to protect her and he was already failing.
