The banging on the door awoke Angus and Evelyn from their sleep.

The small digital clock next to the bed read 2:03, the bright red numbers lighting the room slightly.

Both Angus and Evelyn woke, eyes groggy and vision slightly blurred from the sudden noise. They looked at each other, the duvet all around Evelyn on her half of the bed and Angus with only his underwear on and next to no duvet. His hair was sticking up in all directions as he hadn't tied it up that night, but he didn't mind. He was used to it.

The banging sounded again, somewhat urgent from the growing loudness of it.

"Are you expecting anyone?" Evelyn questioned, sitting up and moving in closer to Angus. He lifted an arm, putting it over her shoulder and pulling her frame into him. Most nights, he wouldn't find as much of an issue with this but due to everything going on, he was worried for Evelyn's safety about who it was and their business at this time.

"No," he said, his voice low and husky form having just woke up.

The bagging rang through the apartment again, this time for longer and with more force behind it.

Angus got up from the bed, tossing Evelyn one of his shorts lying on the ground to cover herself. She was clad in only her pyjama shorts and an old sports bra to evade some of the heat lingering in the night.

Together the couple exited the bedroom and headed towards the front door quietly. Angus walked a step in front of Evelyn, hiding her body behind his much stronger frame. With each step, the small amount of lighting drew shadows on his skin, showing the prominent muscle tone he has. An arm was out behind him, securely holding Evelyn's hand as if that would protect her.

Slowly, Angus unlocked the door and opened it. There was a person, smaller than him and taller than Evelyn standing there. They are dressed in all black, a hood over their face and a hunched back.

"What do you want?" Angus questioned, standing tall. He watched in surprise as the figure removed the hood, the blonde hair falling loose as he came face to face with Loretta.

"I, Angus. I need to talk to you. To both of you." She stuttered, looking down. Angus felt Evelyn's grip tighten on his hand, his dominant side showing as he felt powerful as Evelyn huddled into the back of his frame for comfort and protection.

"What about?" He asked stiffly. It was too late in the night for this, and he didn't want to danger his Evy.

"You know what it is." She said dryly, yet nervousness filled her voice. Reluctantly, Angus stepped to the side, his hand not leaving Evelyn yet he stayed to she would remain behind him as Loretta brushed past and into his apartment.

"Oh my god," Evelyn spoke under her breath, nervousness filling her body.

"Don't worry about it," Angus tried to reassure her. "There's only one of her, and she's tiny and old."

Evelyn couldn't help but let out a small, disbelief laugh that he would joke at such a serious time. Yet she knew Angus is right. Evelyn was just scared about what she was going to say. They padded down the hall to the lounge room, where Loretta was already sat with a lamp on.

Her face was bare from makeup, her older skin naturally flushed pink. Her eyes looked tired, black bags drooping underneath them. She looked horrible.

"What is this about?" Angus said, getting straight to the point.

"I know you broke into my filing cabinet." Loretta said. "Also, I know you were listening into my conversation with Mick."

The air was silent, Evelyn and Angus' heart skipping a beat. They were sprung.

"So, I also know that you know that I was the inside source." Loretta sounded extremely nervous.

"Why are you here now?" Angus asked through gritted teeth.

"I wanted to apologise. At first, this seemed almost harmless. There was a large sum of money, their paper company wasn't going to go broke from the inside news and rising reads and Angus never seemed bothered about it." She paused for a second. "I never thought of the repercussions that could happen."

"Bitch," Evelyn muttered under hear breath. Loretta's face didn't change, meaning Evelyn's remark wasn't heard but Angus' grip on her waist tightened in a warning.

"Look, I know the stress and lack of privacy you have gone through. It's been hell, I know. But I really don't want you guys taking this any further. Please."

"The only reason you're apologising is because you've been caught." Evelyn pointed out, not pleased at all by this confrontation.

"No, even before that. I am trying to fix this."

"Loretta, I'd like you to leave please." Angus said. He heard the desperation in her voice as she tried to plead for forgiveness but Angus wasn't having any of it, especially this late at night.

"The project Save Angus, I started it!" she spoke quickly. "I had the idea ages ago when it first started for if it ever got too bad. Then you questioned me and I could see the drama and stress you've both been going through. All the money I was paid for those stories have been put into the fund, every cent of it." She spoke really quickly.

It was silence from her little outburst. She was on the edge of her seat, eyes wide and pleading to even recognise how bad she felt about this.

"Look, we've already gone to the police. They're going to conduct an investigation. We can't stop them now, they've got all their clearances." Evelyn spoke.

"Tell them you're over it, that you've sorted out. I know I called it on myself but I've been working since I was twenty four to build my organisation. Twenty years it's taken me to build it, it would kill me to see it torn down."

"There's not much we can do." Evelyn said softly to her, Angus nodding silently beside her. His face was blank, emotionless.

"I put my life into this, my marriage didn't work out because I was trying to build it. I can't let that be all for nothing."

"I'll call tomorrow and see what I can do." Angus' voice said emotionless after a moment of silence passed by.

"What?" Loretta asked in disbelief.

"The police. I'll call and see if I can get them to drop it."

"Angus," she gasped. "I couldn't thank you enough." She was close to crying from relief.

"Gus," Evelyn started to say but he ignored her questioning tone.

"What you did was shit. It was immature and selfish but I'm so fucking over seeing my Evy so stressed about this. I want her to be okay and I want this to stop. I want to go home so I have a few conditions." Angus spoke firmly.

"First, you never, ever, scam another person. I don't care of the profit, greed or reason why. Even if someone is threatening to kill you, you don't do it. Don't ever share anything to anyone. Not only does it stress the person, but those they love too which makes everything even worse to endure."

Loretta nodded her head vigorously, tears of disbelief in her eyes.

"Second, all the money we paid for the lessons, put it in the funds. If we ever need a statement or anything to pass this, you are to do one and you are to do it good. Fucking lie if you have to, I want the opportunity to return home one day." Angus said firmly.

"And last of all, never, ever, come to my house again. You do not talk to anyone about me, about Evelyn, about anything I told you. If I hear one more thing leaked, you're done for. Got it." The threat was evident, but Angus knew he made his point clear. Loretta was sitting bunched up on the couch, her hands visibly shaking in nerves and thankfulness. She was shrunk back, clearly intimidated by the man in front of her, the man willing to do anything to ensure both himself and Evelyn were safe and happy.

He didn't want more drama, he didn't want people stressed and he didn't want investigations to happen because then he'd hate the city even more than he does. It didn't take long for Loretta to thank him with everything she had before she almost ran form the apartment, hopefully when he'd never have to withstand her again.

The couple sat still on their couch in silence, Angus' arm draped over Evelyn's shoulder and drawing useless patterns into her skin. The quiet click of the door closing behind Loretta as she left the apartment broke the silence, before the return of no sound returned as they sat there.

They were both thinking of what just happened, and both had mixed thoughts.

Angus was just over it. Over everything. He didn't need police prying into his life, bringing back up his past and the things that made the two drift apart. He wanted a quieter life where he could avoid people when he needed, but could also provide for and protect Evelyn.

Evelyn too, was over it. She was glad they finally found the person responsible for all of the unneeded stress bring into their life. Although she felt no justice had been received, Evelyn also thought that bringing Loretta into bankruptcy and out of a job wouldn't satisfy her either. That would be revenge, past the point of justice to a point where she could struggle to maintain her home and income.

Without saying anything, Evelyn gently stood up from the couch. She clutched Angus' one large hand with both of hers, tugging him so he'd stand. He understood and immediately stood up, no words passed between the two of them. They weren't needed. They started off towards the bedroom, to return to their disrupted sleep. Evelyn felt Angus stop walking behind her, causing her tracks to stop and her to turn around and question him with a look of worry. Angus felt a bit of guilt in his stomach as he looked down on her, her eyes wide in question, eyebrows raised and a bit of fear in her eyes.

"I'm just locking the door," he said quietly down to her. The fear in her eyes lifted slightly, replaced with one of relief. "Go warm the bed," he said with a cheeky pat of her bottom to encourage her to go on.

For the both of them, the short visit was quite scary. No one knew what Loretta would do, the measures she would go to try and make sure they didn't get her caught for what she had done. If she was a crazy or desperate women, anything could have unfolded such as a gun being carried on her frame or even an attempt of black mail to give more stories. The fact they had gotten the easy and safe was out felt too good to be true, making them both still feel a little bit on edge.

Angus stood there for a moment, his arms crossed over his chest as he watched Evelyn retreat to the bedroom. The small thuds of her feet on the wooden floorboards echoed slightly in the small corridor, the length of the black shirt she was wearing hiding her body in the darkness of the room. He watched as she spun around quickly and quirked her head at him.

She really was lucky to have Angus in her life and she was entirely thankful. His strong arms were crossed, his powerful body on display for her. He was one of the most beautiful men she had ever encountered, and if she wasn't lucky enough to land someone in the looks department, she also got the sweetest, most genuine and caring person ever. And she couldn't ask for more.

"If you want to go home, if this project works, I'll go with you if you can tolerate only living with me." Her soft voice rung through the quiet rooms.

"I would have made you come with me, even if I had to kidnap you." He responded, deadly serious but with a small smile lost in the darkness. He raised his eyebrows, watching her small body race at him. He opened his arms, bracing himself as she shot into his arm, her face buried into the crook of his shoulders he caught her. His feet stumbled back slightly from the force she jumped at him with, but his hands were quick to grab and steady her.

"I love you," she said, placing a heavy kiss on his lips. "I love you that that damn much."

Angus held her up, his hands under her thighs as she wrapped his legs around his waist. Her pale eyes bored into his and the love and affection they felt for each other radiated off one another.

"I love you," he said. "You were the best thing that ever happened to me." He placed a soft kiss on her lips, lingering and savouring the intimate and vulnerable moment between the two of them.

"Now go to bed, I'll only be a minute." He placed her frame on the floor gently and watched her walk away, a small smile playing on his lips.

Defiantly the best thing that ever happened to him.
