I was going out with Gio tonight, I'm not sure where he was taking me but I know we were going out for dinner. He was picking me up after work so I had brought my dress along with me so that I could freshen up in my personal bathroom in the back of my office then changed. I was currently running a bit late since I had to deal with some stupid customers- an annoying couple who was stupidly offended because they had came in for dinner and Kathleen accidentally asked if they were staying or having takeout. Hello? Mistake anyone? It was unbelievable.
They started making a scene, and torturing the poor girl, I mean couldn't they give the girl a break? Clearly she was new and made a mistake but making something so stupid and simple like that into a mountain was definitely overreacting. I had to make an appearance to solve the issue. It was times like this when I wish I didn't have to follow the number one business rule 'The customer is always right even when they're wrong' but could just put a bullet to both their heads shutting them up permanently for making unnecessary commotions.
After solving the 'big issue' with the annoying customers I had called Kathleen to come with me to my office so I could explained a few things to her. It was her first day here so I understand, she was bound to make a mistake since I didn't get to assigned anyone to explained things to her and I didn't get a chance to since I was busy earlier sorting out stuff that has to do with the refurbishment of my new restaurant before opening. After my lunch with Kathleen on Saturday I had told her to come by on Monday at 12. It so happened that when she came by I've been so busy at the time I just told Khadja to give her a uniform and apron and let her do what she could until I got the chance to speak with her. That time didn't come until now when we were in my office.
"Lexi I'm really sorry I didn't know, I'm just used to that question being asked to me when I go out to a fast food restaurant that I just thought it was the right thing to say" Kathleen said nervously to me as we entered my office.
"Hey Kathleen chill, I'm not gonna fire you or anything I just didn't get a chance to talk to you all day like I said I would" I chuckled. "And I'm sorry about that, you can sit".
"Thank you" Kathleen said nervously as she sat down.
I went to sat down on the sofa in my office as well. I had noticed from Saturday, that Kathleen seemed to be really nervous or jumpy when it comes on to people, it makes me wonder why on earth was that.
"First of all that couple were both idiots, they were overreacting over nothing" I said to her. "Its obvious that you're new and wasn't quite aware of how things run around here. It wasn't your fault that I didn't get to brief you on the runnings her instead of just throwing you out on the battle field inexperienced like that, so I wanna say him sorry".
"Secondly you asking them that question gave me an idea" I smiled at her.
"Really? What kind?" Kathleen asked curiously.
"I was thinking, maybe at my new restaurant I should make it like a fast food outlet as well where people could come and get meals to go or order take outs" I replied. "And of course I'm gonna have to hire persons for delivery but that's the least right now".
"I think that's a great idea Lexi, and that way I guess it'd be more profitable" Kathleen nodded smiling.
"Well I got that idea from you" I chuckled. "Anyway I wanted to also asked you something personal".
"What is that?" Kathleen asked nervously once more.
It was clear that this girl had zero people skill or was clearly hiding something. I mean she is way too jumpy and nervous to be considered normal.
"Have you ever been in trouble with the law?" I asked expressionlessly.
"No, no no. Of course not" Kathleen answered quickly. "Well once I guess when I got arrested because I happened to be at the wrong place and time".
"Kathleen, the reason I'm asking you these questions is because I need to know that I can trust you enough before I can fully employ you" I stated. "So what happened?"
"Well I... I uh... I was around some friends and there was marijuana full in the house, I honestly didn't know at the time trust me. But then the police came knocking and then they searched the house and found it, so they arrested us all. But those charges were dropped since it didn't belonged to me and I had no idea about it" Kathleen rushed out.
"You ever tried it before?" I asked quite interested.
"What marijuana? I uhmm... I... I hung out with the wrong crowd at one point and I smoked with them a-and got high a few times" Kathleen shuttered.
"How about now?" I asked.
"No that was a long time ago" Kathleen shake her head.
"Okay I just need to know that you won't get into any such trouble that'll brought trouble here" I said to her.
"I promised you I won't Lexi" Kathleen said to me.
"Alright" I nodded. "So anyway, in the future when you approach a customer, you greet them politely. You tell them you're name, let them know that you'll be their server for the remainder of their morning or evening. Ask them if you could get them something to drink as starters or a light appetizer, after they have made their request you take it back to them then give them a few minutes before going back and asking if they're ready to order.
If it is a couple please remember to be polite and smile with both of them, do not stare on anyone of them much its rude, even worst do not check out the guy under any circumstances. But you're still however expected to pay very good attention to them both. Don't worry, I'm gonna get Khadja to show you the ropes around here, you know how to hold the platter, how to hand out drinks and meals on the table etc. Anything you don't know you asked her. Khadja is the one I told to give you the uniform this morning, and you take lunch break based on what shift you got. So if you started working in the morning at 9, you'll take lunch break at 1. Lunch is forty five minutes so you'll have to be back at work by 3pm the latest and then you'll get off at 5pm and the late shift waiters and waitresses take over that time. Anything else?"
"Uh... Yeah, how do I know what shifts I'll be working?" Kathleen.
"Well you see, to make things easier I've made somewhat a personal timetable or a schedule for each employee so they'll know when and when they'll be working and what exactly they'll be doing. Its also posted in the employees quarters on the notice board" I told her.
"But for you, its kinda different since its your first day here, so you just show up at 9 in the morning and try attending to available tables or clean them until I work things out for you okay".
"Alright" Kathleen nodded. "Thanks Lexi".
"Yeah no problem, anything you want to know don't forget to ask me okay? And you don't need to be nervous around me okay Kathleen, I don't bite" I smiled at her.
"Yeah sorry" Kathleen said sheepishly.
"You don't need to apologized for being nervous Kathleen, you just need to work on keeping it in check. You can't be working at a place like this if you're gonna be nervous all the time" I said to her.
"Sorry" Kathleen replied again.
"You're doing it again" I said to her.
"Oh my bad" Kathleen said causing me to chuckle.
"My bad is just another subtle way of apologizing Kathleen, you need to work on that" I chuckled standing up before looking at my watch.
"In the mean time I gotta go freshened up, my boyfriend's picking me up for dinner and I'm late, he's gonna be here any minute".
"It's my fault, I'm sorry for keeping up your time Lexi" Kathleen replied. "And sorry about saying sorry again".
"No its not, it's just a part of the business he'll understand" I laughed. "I guess its just a habit that I'm gonna have to get used to with you".
"Can I asked you something Lexi?" Kathleen asked standing up as well.
"Yeah sure" I nodded.
"Uhm... How old are you?" Kathleen asked curiously.
"I'm twenty one, why?" I asked her.
"Really? Its just that I know you're young but you just seemed so mature and accomplished for your age, it makes me really admire you Lexi" Kathleen replied shyly.
"I had to grow up earlier than most kids Kathleen" I told her seriously.
It was true, the night my real parents died I had to start growing up and at 17years old when I was introduced to a life a killing I had officially grown as no young kid or adolescent should have to experienced some of the things I had.
"How old are you Kathleen?" I asked her.
"Twenty two" she replied.
"Well you aren't too old to learn a few things from the young" I joked causing Kathleen to chuckle.
I went over to my desk pulling out an application form and a sheet to put in personal information from one of the drawers before holding them out to Kathleen.
"Anyway, I'm gonna need you to fill out this form. Every employee has to fill one out. And since you didn't applied for the job normally, you'll have to do that and bring it back to me tomorrow. I'm gonna go freshened up, you can go home now".
"Thanks Lexi" Kathleen sighed. "I'll see you tomorrow?"
"No problem. Yeah tomorrow" I replied before taking up my things and heading to the bathroom.
