He gives me a strange look. "Really? That's what you're concerned about right now?" He lectures, coming over to me and helping me up. "No, oh thank you my lovely knight in shining armour, you saved my life! Or something like that?"
"You wish," I grumble.
The agent on the floor twitches bit and I jump in surprise, kicking his gun gun away from him. "Tell your boss, sayonara." I sneer before stepping over him and heading out the door, August giving me support.
"You know, as helpful as you are, I can walk by myself you know."
He nods. "I know. It's just nice to finally be needed a little."
"A little?" I mumble to myself as we get to the glass elevator. When we're heading down through the floors, I look back at the car park as we get closer to the ground where Jack's car had been smoking. It's still there but now the whole thing is packed full of fire engines and police. I tug on August's jacket but he's already noticed how hard it is going to be to get out of here. We reach reception where there are a few police officers coupled together so we decide to just walk past them and act as natural as possible.
One stops us just before we manage to get out and I remember what Jack said. That there are moles everywhere and now they've been given the order to take me out. What if they're in the police too?
"Sir, ma'am, there has been an incident. Have either of you seen any suspicious activity today?" He asks professionally, stood very straight almost reaching August's great height. August and I look to each other and then back to the officer, shaking our heads.
"Uh, no. Sorry." August says and I agree. The police officer seems a little skeptical but we just carrying on walking past him. "Does it count if we are the suspicious activity so we technically didn't see anything?" He mutters to me quietly once we're far enough away for the officer not to hear.
I sigh. "Yes, it counts."
We make it to the car park where so many people are grouped that we blend in pretty well. August tells me he has his car somewhere parked around though getting to it and then getting it out of here will be impossible, he seems optimistic. It's when I catch Jack's face in the crowd that I begin to panic.
"We need to hurry, August!" I cry when he reassures me that we're almost at his car now.
We do finally reach it and I throw myself into the passenger seat once he opens the door and then he hurries to get into the drivers seat, speeding away before I know it. We squeeze through the crowd of people and at one point I get a glimpse of the destruction jack had caused. His car is half rammed into the building, all the air bags have popped out but there's no one inside. There's already police tape sectioning off the area and some forensic people doing a sweep but I know they won't find anything from Jack. He had gloves and there's no way he would've used a car in his own name.
My prints will be inside that car though.
Just another reason to get out of this place and fast.
When we've been driving for a little while, I cautiously lift my hand that's grubby with all that it's been through today and place it on top of August's that's resting on top of the gearstick. I feel him relax a little beneath my touch which calms me.
"Thank you." I whisper.
"Thank you.." He smiles. "You showed me that there's more to this world than just evil."
I pull away from his gaze. "I'm not so sure you'll still think that once you find out what I've done."
His hand reaches out and grazes my jaw, pulling my face so I'm looking at him. "What do you mean?" He asks with confusion. "Did you... join them?"
I brush his hand away and allow the passenger window to take my attention again. "No! Never! Although with what I'm about to do, I may as well have."
I feel his gaze on me as his confused voice asks, "What have you done?"
"It turns out I have a dark side." I answer, putting a my hand into my pocket and fumbling around until I find what I'm looking for. I pull out the USB and hold it up. "A USB with everything we need on it. All the information D.A.R.E wanted gone is on this and just about everything else E.I.O doesn't want revealed."
August's face is blank at first but it morphs into pure pride and he grins. "Amazing!"
"I'm sorry, everything I told you not to do, I've done. Deceiving and scheming things." I admit, shamefully.
"You could never be as bad as they are. I promise." He says seriously. "Now back to business, we need to find somewhere to safe to take shelter so we can survive long enough to give that to the police."
I nod. "Exactly, though I'm not waiting a week to get Mae anymore."
"What, you want to get her now?"
"Yes, it's only an hour away. I can't go a second longer without her."
August has a knowing look on his face when he nods. "Okay, tell me the address. Let's go and get her."
*****
I raise my hand to knock at the door but find it just hovering, considering whether to do it or not. August then joins me and quickly knocks on the door for me instead. I grimace but step forward, ready to greet Anne.
"Thanks." I grumble.
"Just returning the fa-"
The door opens just a tad and a face appears from round the side of it, through the slither that's visible. "Hello?"
"Hi Anne," I smile but she just looks a little shocked.
"Willow?" She cries pulling the door open, her pale and tired face being brought to the light. "What are you doing here?"
"I couldn't wait another moment, I simply had to see Mae." I say with a forced smile and it's obvious she's unconvinced. Anne looks around after giving August a hard look. He also smiles at her but his seems genuine.
"W-well, I just put little Mae d-down to have a nap, Willow." She stutters and I have trouble deciding whether that's her usual nervousness or something else.
"That's okay, I can wait." I insist with a bigger smile.
"Mama!" A little voice cries from behind Anne who now looks much more pale. She gulps. I reach out my arms and Mae comes running out from behind the door and I grab her, hauling her into my embrace. "I missed you!"
"I missed you too, pumpkin!" I give her a squeeze.
"Can we go now?" Her little voice pleads, coupled with her big innocent eyes.
"Not yet, Mae. You haven't finished your lunch!" Anne exclaims stepping out, closer to Mae and I.
I give her a look. "I thought you said she just went down for a nap, Anne?"
Anne gulps again. "S-she did..."
"No I didn't!" Mae protests, cuddling me closer. "Annie says we were going away today, mummy! But I want to go with you!"
My mouth falls open as I sharply look to Anne. "What?" My voice is harsh.
Anne scrambles to protest, waving her arms about. "N-no! I just meant to the park!"
"Liar liar, pants on fire, Annie!" Mae cries over her with her tongue stuck out.
Anne goes limp, her shoulders sagging. She hold her hands up in surrender. "I wasn't just going to take her away. I-I couldn't let you take her away from me! I've been m-more of a mother to her than you have!"
I feel my heart sink down into my feet. "You're absolutely right. But what you were going to do was wrong, Anne! I'm taking my baby far way from here where she can have a good, normal life." I say, firmly. "If what Mae says is true, there will already be a bag packed for her. I'm taking that and going."
I then put Mae back down on her feet and place her hand inside August's. "I'll be back in just a second." I then hurry into the house and up to the room I know is Mae's and just as I expected, there's a suitcase packed with a few things laying out on the bed.
I can't believe she was planning to take Mae away! What if I had done as she asked and come later in the week? What if I never saw my baby again?
My cheeks become wet with that thought as I snatch up everything I can and head back down stairs. I get back to the front door where Anne is sat on the doorstep looking very sorry for herself. I give everything to August and he starts putting it all into the car. I take Mae back into my arms and stand over Anne, shaking my head.
"I know you had her best interests at heart, Anne. I thank you for all you have done." I say sincerely before I hold up Mae's little arm and wave it. "Say bye bye, Mae."
"Bye bye, Annie!" She smiles cheerfully before I head to the car and place her in a booster seat I got from the house. Anne waves back but with a terribly sad look about her.
August and I then get into the car ready to drive off. As I'm strapping myself in, August readjusts the mirrors but when he goes to the rear mirror, he freezes.
"August. What is it?" I hiss, under my breath. He doesn't move or reply but just slowly lifts his arm and continues to readjust it with a very worried look set into his features. "You're scaring me." I hiss again, under my breath so Mae doesn't hear.
He starts the engine, his face remaining unchanged and we pull away, beginning the journey.
"We have a tail." He mutters when we've been driving for a few minutes of silence aside from Mae's happy noises.
"What?"
"Don't look back." He demands coldly and I jump but do as I'm told.
"You're scaring me! And I never tell people that, August!" I then whimper a little while later when he just continues to drive, my voice coming out slightly strangled.
"It's not just any tail." He whispers, his voice dark and husky. "It's Jack."
