I go to say something witty back but his expression changes with a blink of an eye and I hold back for a moment. He looks at me and then to the space past the fence. He puts a finger to his lips and motions for us to walk further behind the fence as he holds me around the waist, making me go that way anyway. I put a confused look on but he continues on, ignoring me.
"Hey! He's over there! And he's got the Prey!" I hear some rather raspy voices cry out from the other side of the fence, in the parking lot. Wondering how they can see us, seeing as I can't see anything other than Jack and a few near by bushes now that the sun had set, I look up to Jack only to find him frozen with a terrified look on his paling face. I then notice how he's holding me tightly as if to prevent me from getting away.
Then the situation dawns on me.
Is this a set up to catch me?
"Jack. What's happening?" I ask in a tight whisper, feeling the terror in me flow down my body all the way to my fingertips and toes.
He simply looks away from my gaze and takes in a sharp breath before puffing that back out and standing tall. "I'm sorry but I have to do this." He says quickly as he swiftly whips a gun out from inside his leather jacket. Then he points it at my head after grabbing both my hands so I can't pull away. I beg with my eyes for him not to do this.
"Do what?" I hiss but my voice comes out shaky. I realise I'm making a really rubbish spy at the moment. Normally in situations like this I'd have the criminal down on the ground ready to arrest but not now. Not seeing as the criminal is none the than the man I had been wishing would return for three years.
"Stay calm, Willow. I've got it under control." He says firmly pulling me away from the fence and into the view of the men we had heard. They look positively disgusting, practically foaming at the mouth. Their shirts are dirty, stained with rips and holes accompanied nicely with some scrappy trousers and severely unkempt hair. Not to mention their creepy smiles and the guns they hold at their waist's.
"Jack." I whimper, pulling on his sleeve but he ignores me and pushes me to the ground. "I'm warning you because Robert is right inside that building and he'll get you for this!" I cry but it falls on deaf ears as the other guys chuckle under their breath.
"I can't believe how easy this was." One of them comments bluntly and the look on his face makes me uncomfortable.
"Men," Jack grunts, his voice now deeper and more authoritative as he addresses the men. "I've got this covered. Please just let me do my work."
"No way mate, a pretty thing like that? Sorry but it's boss's orders, we have to stay with your or we take over and you go." One replies in a slightly threatening tone, stepping forward. Jack doesn't back down but seems to know better than to talk back. "You think he's stupid? He knows all about the history between you two." Says the other man in a thick accent, looking between Jack and I with a raised eyebrow.
I stop my silent sobs suddenly after hearing that and Jack notices.
"What are you talking about? The fact we used to be co workers?" He questions with a scoff as he looks down at me with a sneering look on his face. "That meant nothing to me and won't get in the way, men, trust me."
"Oh that's not what we heard." Says the second man cuts in, and they exchange a look between each other before looking back at Jack and I. "lovers, correct?"
I gulp.
Nobody was suppose to know. It would ruin everything. How could they possibly have found out when back then we had kept it so well hidden?
"Wrong!"Jack shouts, letting them get to him. I was always the one thing that got to him and it dawns on me that his only option was to forget me during those years he was away. He would't have survived otherwise. I suddenly feel awful for trying to make him feel bad. I hope to myself in my head that he doesn't get too defensive because it would give it all away even more. "You couldn't be more wrong."
While he was allowing the emotion of anger to succumb him from them bringing it all back up, all I began to feel was heartache. Remembering what Jack and I had before he left would be the end of me... it would hurt too much.
"Oh really? Well, boss says that you two..." begins one of the men but Jack suddenly lifts his gun away from me and to the guy who had opened his big mouth. He steps back ever so slightly but doesn't make any attempt to be apologetic. There was still a deep smirk engraved in his face.
"Okay, okay. We'll leave it for now. Boss just wants the girl." The first guy steps forward to take over and compromises.
"Fine." Jack says his voice lowering along with his gun. My mouth drops open. I was glad they would leave all of the past stuff behind but now I'd be taken goodness knows where. I need to do something. "Willow? Stand up." Jack orders lowering his gun to me again and I just huff. "We're going with these men."
"You put me here! You get me back up!" I retaliate. It was his fault this was all happening so the least he could do was get me up off the floor he forced me on. He looks down at me while giving me a hard look and I can't help but notice the moon reflecting off of his cold eyes. He doesn't immediately move to help me up but when I continue to refuse to make a move on my own he puts out a hand. I gratefully take it and he lifts me up far too quick, leaving me dizzy.
"Right. Let's go." Jack orders and we start walking to a van near by, one that now I thought about it wasn't normally here. We only manage a few paces before one of the guys cocks a gun and Jack freezes, forcing me to stop too.
"Give us the girl, Myers." Says the first guy walking to in front of us and holding his gun up to Jack while the second guy keeps one on me. "I've decided we're going to take over now."
"What?" Jack scoffed, keeping a tight hold on me. "No, I said already I've got this, okay?" He adds before he tries to carry on walking but the guy who had his gun on Jack pulls the trigger and a shot echoes around us. My ears ring for a moment, not helping the dizziness I still felt but when it eases I begin to panic about Jack.
"Jack?" I cry out but he comes in to view and shushes me.
He's fine.
The idiot had just shot at the floor.
"Consider that a warning, Myers." He cautions as he steps even closer to grab me but Jack ponders for a moment before whipping me away. He stands behind me and places his head in the crook of my neck, his breath tickling my ear. "Get in your car and drive away." Jack whispers before kissing my cheek gently. I don't move or say anything but he isn't the type to give up when he has an idea so he just throws me behind him and quickly holds his gun up to the guys.
"You hurt either of us and I'll see to it that you don't see tomorrow whether we make it or not." He warns as he quickly cocks his gun.
I bit at my lip nervously trying my best to stop my legs from trembling. On cases I was strong because there wasn't usually an emotional connection. It was just my job. This, however, was more than my job and it was affecting me. I contemplate whether I can really leave Jack in a situation like this.
"But..." I begin but he cuts me off. Then again he has been doing this kind of thing for years and hasn't been killed yet.
"Now!" He yells and that throws me into action. If I continue to stand there like a muppet, we'll both end up in a bad way. This is my chance to save us. I gulp before whimpering quietly as I begin to run to my car. The keys had been dropped on the floor earlier and they were still by the door. I heard another gun cock, probably the third and final guy preparing his gun to shoot as I finally made it to the car with the keys now shaking in my hands as I threw open the door and shoved the keys into the ignition. The car came to life beneath my touch and I revved the engine forgetting to take the hand break off.
I had a choice now.
Just when I'm about to get back out the car I get an idea.
Slowly but surely I manage to get the car going. I put it in reverse and back up. I count to five and let out a shaky breath, contemplating whether to really do this.
Just do it.
I press my foot to the accelerator as hard as I can and close my eyes tightly.
All I can think is, I am really, really sorry.
There's a bang. Then a crash. And then a heart dropping thump as I realise what I just planned to do, I have actually done. There's a scream but I don't know who it belongs to. It could be me for all I know because right now all I can really distinguish from everything is plain white noise.
I suddenly tune in to something other than empty noise once I pulled the key out of the ignition. Jack's voice. "Willow!" His voice is loud somehow as if he's close. "What did you do?" He yells. I tear my eyes away from the scene I just created and look to my door. Jack's standing there with a look of deep concern etched into his fine face. It takes him less than a second to realise I'm in a weak state and he gently places my head on his shoulder.
"I-I'm sorry." I manage to splutter out but it muffles into his jacket. I feel him shake his head but he doesn't say anything. After a few short moments he steps back away from the car and I. I join him in standing as he looks upon the two men beside the car. At first I can't bring myself to look up from the floor but curiosity mixed with deep guilt get the best of me. All thoughts become paralysed and the only thing that comes to my mind is how silent everything is. The white noise has subsided now and the only steady sound I can pick up on is Jack and I shakily breathing. Then a shrill high pitch noise in the back of my mind.
Both the men are on the floor and they're not moving.
