After we say our goodbyes, Robert asks if he can at least help me back down to the ground level of the building seeing as we're quite high up and I eventually and very reluctantly give in. The movement behind his frosted window was really pulling at my curious streak as I tried to figure out what it was when we were probably as high as the empire state right now but staying behind to check it out was far to risky so I decide to leave it.
On the way down the elevator with Robert the caving feeling that had jumped onto me when I first saw the two guys on the floor of the car park suddenly returns and the image of them still on the floor attacks my mind. I really hope Jack has sorted it by now, surely I've given him enough time. But what if I haven't?
I throw myself as casually as I can over the buttons on the elevator door and we come to a sudden stop when a few are pressed.
"Willow!" Robert exclaims as he grabs me to stop us both falling over. "What on earth?"
"Sorry!" I cry back but secretly I'm relieved, this will buy him more time. "I just realised I forgot to grab some paper work from my office and got so lost in thought, I lost my balance!" I try to explain as casually as possible and Robert doesn't look sceptical at what I've said for once in my life.
"Honestly, Willow." He sighs, shaking his head and he turns away so I don't see his face twitch with amusement but he moves too late and I catch it."This is, what, the first time I've ever given you an evening off in years and you spend it glued to this office?" He laughs lightly, shaking his head again. He places me back on my feet gently and goes over to the buttons, allowing the elevator to continue moving after pressing something but the destination light shows the level where my office is. I just chuckle with him and don't say anything else.
On the journey from the elevator to my office I try to walk as best as I can even though the searing pain that feels like a flame gnaws at my ankle bone. I want Robert to see I'll be okay on my own so I can try to hunt for Jack and ensure that the mess I created is sorted including prying eyes and CCTV.
So much for sorting out deep set problems with my two year old.
I see Robert check his watch in the corner of my eye. After the speech he gave me back in his office I was under the impression he had no one waiting for him back at home. Nothing to return to but an empty place which is why he wanted me. So why is he checking his watch?
Why do I even care?
"Got dinner waiting or something?" I mumble as I unlock my office door and head in. Robert lingers outside.
"No," He answers simply, not elaborating at first but when he meets my eye, I give him a knowing look and he nods once before continuing. "My daughters coming over for a meal."
I nod like it was nothing new to me though I had no idea he had even been married once, let alone had at least one child.
"When?"
"Uh," He looks at me strange. "This evening."
I roll my eyes at him as I pretend to fumble through my drawers. At least if I kept him distracted by talking about his family, he wouldn't see through my total lie at looking for papers.
"I know that, dummy-"
"Watch the language, I am your superior." He cuts in, with a raised eyebrow and I actually feel a little intimidated. I nod again to acknowledge what he'd said.
"I understand you have an arrangement for this evening, what I was enquiring for was when exactly tonight you'd be indisposed to that prior set date." I pronounce every syllable with extra emphasis to really take the mic. He couldn't practically propose to me one second and then demand my respect like I was some inferior stranger. Even though I practically am.
He pulls a face. "Well when you put it like that," Robert quickly pulls his face into a straight serious one. "Don't talk to me like that either." He adds before he can't help but allow his features to twist into a grin as he laughs. I also can't help but laugh along with him but he soon controls it and returns to his usual face.
"Actually, she'll be at mine about now." He says quietly knowing full well what I'm about to say.
"Sir!" I cry. "What are you still doing here with silly old me then?"
"You know why." He almost shrugs and I look down to my ankle and pretend to be oblivious about what he really meant. That he just wanted to be with me.
"Oh well, don't worry. It's already feeling better." I force a smile as lie and I gesture to my wobbly ankle. It still felt like fire but I'd been gotten at by a bullet enough times in my life to know how to handle pain. Robert definitely wasn't stupid and there was a 0.01% chance he was believing my lie but he bought it so I guessed he was putting it down to me wanting to be a little independent. He just knows me too well.
He returns my smile though his seems to be more genuine. "I'm glad." He adds before he goes to turn away and walk down the corridor he had been stood in the whole time.
"Just go, Sir!" I exclaim and he does.
"Good night, Willow." He calls out to me as he continues down to the elevator and hits the button on the wall, glancing down at me through my office door once more before disappearing.
I breathe a sigh of relief and lean back in my chair.
He's finally gone. While there were probably a lot of workers still here doing overtime, there was a high chance I wouldn't be bothered by any of them. People knew who I was because I used to be one of the most elite agents here, till they demoted me due to my emotional involvement in a few jobs once Jack left. Everyone still knew who I was but now, instead of looking up to me, they pitied me.
It dawns on me that while I've managed to remain here and gotten rid of Robert, I need to figure out what I'm doing next. I probably need to check out the car park to ensure it was all sorted now while hoping really hard that Jack is still around somewhere. He had said though that he was here on business, what if he just left everything to do what he came for and left? If that was the case, I needed to remove all digital evidence before heading down there.
I switch on my computer monitor and do a little hacking before I make it to the main frame. Something we were taught in training back when I was still a teen was how to hack. It was something I really took a shining to and I enjoyed it a lot. So much so that I excelled past the level of the rest of the class and was entered into a program for extremely talented hackers. I guess they never guessed I'd use what they taught me to hide my crimes from the very agency I worked for.
My hands that were typing away above they keyboard come to a sudden stop and I freeze. A horrible thought comes to mind and I gulp as I try to remove it.
I was as bad as Jack.
I see him for the first time since he becomes a traitor and what... he influences me to become just like him within a matter of minutes? I hadn't even realised it till now.
I sure couldn't let the agency know what I had done, so I continue to quickly remove all the evidence but I make a decision there and then not to let him change me anymore. I loved working for the good guys and all I wanted was for him to come back to me and this side. If he was going to pass up a chance to see me so he could work for the bad guys, there was probably only a small chance he would ever come back. How had a gang like D.A.R.E convinced such a devoted man to join their side?
It didn't matter anymore, did it.
I had his child and he had chosen to continue his crimes instead of return to me. That was his choice and I'm sure that at some point he will really live to regret it.
I nod to myself as I quickly sign out from the computer and remove any extra traces of me even deleting the original evidence. But just as I'm about to finish up I hear a noise from behind me. A sound of tapping on glass. I suddenly changes to scratching on glass and it hits a nerve within me. I swivel around in my chair, ready to attack whatever it was when my frosted window suddenly swings open and a lanky figure jumps in.
I try to jump up but my ankle pain flares up again and I cry out in pain but quickly muffle it. The intruder can't know I'm injured or they'll take advantage of it.
They face away from me so I can't see their face and because the only light I have in the room is my little lamp, the figure isn't all that lit up.
"Show yourself!" I demand as I rip open the draw at my hip and take a weapon in my hand, not hesitating for a second as I hold it up to them.
They turn around finally, hold their hands up and a slither of light hits their face. I'm suddenly unable to breathe as air is knocked from my wind pipe when I realise to it is. I clutch at the chair so I don't fall but the intruder comes over to help me.
"I thought it'd be rude if I left without saying goodbye." He shrugs casually as if they hadn't just burst through a rather small window and scared an unsuspecting bystander. Me. He strangely helps me back into the chair properly and notices me struggle when I move my leg.
"Since when-" I take a deep breath "has that... ever stopped you." I mutter through ragged breaths. I'm mostly surprised and that was why I was out of breath but the pain in my ankle had increased ten fold when I tried to jump up so that was taking the rest of the air I needed to breathe.
It somehow didn't matter right now though. Jack was back.
