CHAPTER 32 - THE FLAME CONSUMES US
Castle Xanthe City of Aphelion, Wolfen Territory The Realm of Xathos
The third day had passed, and the heat showed no signs of subsiding. Ailara felt its relentless grasp, surging in waves through her body. It was an all-encompassing sensation that gnawed at the edges of her sanity, making it difficult to think of anything else. Worse still, the heat had triggered Dimitrios' rut—a primal state that amplified his already intense need for her. It felt like a never-ending cycle, the two of them caught in a relentless storm.
But there was something else, though. Ailara could sense there was something building within Dimitrios. Not just the rut, but something deeper, more primal. Each time he reached his release, it was more intense, as if he was holding back something monumental, as if his body was preparing for something beyond the usual urges of a rut. She didn't know what it was, but it made her heart race whenever she thought about it.
At some point during the day, food had been brought to their door and left outside. The servants didn't dare enter the room after the last time one of them had tried, only to be met with Dimitrios' feral growl, a sound that seemed to shake the very walls.
He wouldn't let anyone near them, and each time he sensed someone outside the door, he was on alert, growling low in his chest until the footsteps retreated. It was a sound of warning, a threat meant to keep others away from his mate.
The servants quickly adapted, resorting to leaving food and water outside the door for the two of them to grab during their rare moments of rest. Dimitrios wouldn't allow Ailara to be far from him, not even for a few seconds. Every time the heat relented, or when the haze of his rut cleared, he held her close, his arms like a protective barrier against the outside world. The used their rest time to eat, sleep, and bathe but always together.
Right now was one of their precious moments of respite. Ailara lay curled in Dimitrios' arms, the furs wrapped loosely around them. His body was a solid, comforting presence against her back, and despite the lingering heat, she relished these fleeting moments of calm.
