CHAPTER 6 – A Vampyr's Bite
Castle Xanthe City of Aphelion, Wolfen Territory The Realm of Xathos
Dimitri leapt and landed on a crouch beside Ailara.
His bared his fangs and released a growl that made his warriors bow their heads in submission. They moved away but kept their eyes on the creature they staked so heartlessly to the ground just as the sun rose.
Dimitri transformed from wolf and back into man. His fur which was as black as the darkest night shrunk back into tanned skin. Limbs shortened. Claws and razor-sharp fangs retracted.
He glared at his men as one by one, he pulled at the stakes that kept her pinned to the ground. Dimitri threw the first stake towards the nearby tree where it shattered at the impact. Everyone flinched and the villagers started to back away.
The warriors held their ground and bowed their heads but their eyes were still trained on Ailara and their gazes were still filled with hate.
When the last of the stakes were removed, Dimitri gathered Ailara into his arms and rushed her to the keep. The smell of burnt skin filled the air and it was a stench that made him feel like his heart was being squeezed out of his chest.
"Leave her to burn in the sun!" one of the villagers shouted.
Dimitri didn't have time to look back and take note of who said it. He can't afford to waste another second. He was already in the safety of the castle but there were still a lot of windows around and rays of sunlight were everywhere.
But the statement tore at him.
The appropriate punishment would be given later.
Dimitri projected these thoughts into the pack link and heard their sharp intake of breath as they heard their king.
This was Dimitrios not only being king but being alpha as well.
His line was the strongest and most powerful and that is why he was king. But he stays as king because he's defeated everyone who was brave enough to challenge him for his title.
A prince is born destined to rule as king one day. But when the time comes that he is already king, there are those who can challenge him for his position. If he loses, he forfeits the title. Dimitri had more than his fair share of challenges.
And he'd won them all.
With each challenge that showed his superior strength and cunning, he was able to gain back the trust of his people that he lost when his queen compromised the alliance and many of his people died.
With Ailara here, it looks like more challenges will come.
Dimitrios sighed as he went up the stairs several steps at a time.
Gently, he laid Ailara on the bed and reached for the flask of blood that was on the bedside table. He was about to hold it against her lips and make her drink when he saw the look in her eyes.
It made him still and made his wolf howl inside him.
She lay so still on the bed that he thought she was dead. But the shallow rise and fall of her chest showed him that she was still on the land of the living. However, it was her eyes that were dead.
He remembered them so full of emotion when they were younger. But now, they stared slightlessly ahead.
Half of her face, neck, arms and legs were charred. Due to her being a Vampyr, these wounds were already starting to heal. It wasn't as fast as a normal Vampyr would heal, though. Dimitri thought it may be due to the fact that she still hasn't healed fully from her initial ordeal. Also, she wasn't drinking a lot of blood.
This was evidenced by the flask of blood that was beside the table. It was almost still full and judging by what Dimitri saw, she only drank what seemed to be two or three sips.
Dimitri brought the flask to her lips.
"Drink," he commanded.
Still, she did not move and a lone tear fell from her eyes and made its way across her burnt cheek.
"Vampyr, drink," he urged.
No response.
"Ailara..." Dimitri called out.
"Beautiful," she whispered. Her voice was raspy and low yet full of emotion.
"What?"
"The sun. The light. It was beautiful," she answered.
Dimitri was surprised at her words. He lifted her shoulders to help her drink. "It's the first time I have seen it," she continued.
"It would have been wonderful if it was the last thing I ever saw..."
"...a beautiful memory to take into Draugr."
Her words shocked Dimitri to his core. She rendered him speechless.
Her head tilted to the side and blue eyes met his. "Dimitrios... You should have let me die," she told him. It was the same set of words all over again. Dimitri found himself wanting to ask why she wanted death so badly.
Maybe it's because the Vampyrs are now almost an extinct race?
Their once prestigious cities are have been reduced to rubble. Vampyrs became a tribe of nomads hiding wherever they can. They lived in forests, caves, and whichever city gave them refuge—but those were scarce.
Dimitri's instinct told him it was something much bigger than that.
"Dimitri... Why can't you just leave me be?" she asked.
"Because I know you're hiding something from me. And I won't kill you until you tell me what it is."
"If I could, I would have told you everything already..." she whispered.
"That is another question. Why can't you tell me, Ailara?" Dimitri's voice rose and it took all his self-control not to grab her by the shoulders and shake her until she told him everything.
"I just can't. Dimitri... Can't you just let me find my peace? It's much better for all of us. For you. For your people."
"You're our prisoner until I get everything I want." He lifted her and placed the flask against her lips.
"Don't you see? I'm a danger to everyone!"
Dimitri snorted. Then the corner of his lips moved up into a smirk."You're weak. You're no threat to anyone here."
At those words, he felt Ailara stiffen in his arms. For the first time since he saw her again, her eyes flashed with fury. Dimitri also saw something else in her —hunger.
Then, without any further warning, she struck.
It was as if time slowed down and Dimitri's reflexes along with it. He felt her warm breath over his skin before her fangs sunk deep in his neck. Then, he felt her cold lips seal over the bite as his blood flowed on her tongue.
The moment her fangs pierced his skin, it was bliss. It was said that a Vampyr's bite was painful but he didn't feel any pain. In fact, it was the opposite for sheer pleasure made his blood sing. Instead of pushing her away, he gathered her closer. Her body pressed against his and this time, his body was flooded with desire. The rest of his blood, which she was not taking, pooled lower in his body.
It was his turn to moan.
It has been so long since he felt like this.
The pleasure came swiftly and without warning that he found himself reeling. With a groan, he fell down on the bed taking her with him. He heard her moan of surprise when she ended up on top of him. He wrapped her in his arms to steady her and heard her soft moan again. He closed his eyes for the sound drove his brain to mush and overloaded his senses.
She moved against him and her leg rubbed against his aching erection. Dimitri gasped against the pleasure. If he continued grinding against him like that, he would come in his pants. His hands moved from her waist down to her hips and he settled her more firmly against his chest.
She draped her leg across his other side and straddled him. This brought his hardness straight against her damp core. He wanted to move up and rub against her but he didn't want the exquisite feeling of her bite end.
And so he just ran his hands up her hips and her waist as she continued to take from him. Dimitri thought he would be weaker with every single drop spilled. But again, it was the opposite. He felt stronger. Much, much stronger. He felt like he could conquer an entire kingdom of Cerran.
Dimitri opened his eyes and saw her wounds heal. The charred skin became pink in a matter of seconds before going back to its usual pale color. He heard the pop of broken bones as they realigned. He felt the lacerations on her back heal and her skin was smooth beneath his hands
She lifted her lips from his neck and then gazed at him with glowing blue eyes. She was so close that all he had to do was lean forward and his lips would graze hers. Dimitri moved to do just that.
Would her lips feel as soft as the rest of her body?
What would she taste like?
And then everything ended too soon and it was as if he was suddenly doused with ice-cold water.
In the blink of an eye, he was lifted against the wall nearest to the bed with her hand in his throat. His head hit the wall and he heard it crack but he felt no pain.
Maybe it was because of the euphoria he experienced with her bite.
He felt a trickle of blood run down from his neck and down his chest. He did not care. He covered her hand with his and tried to pry her fingers loose.
"Put me down," he commanded. She responded by squeezing his neck, cutting off his air.
"King of the Wolfen... never presume that I am weak. I am stronger than you think," she told him.
And then her hold on his neck loosened and she collapsed.
He caught her before her body hit the floor. Once more, she was limp in his arms. Gently, he carried her to the bed. He took a closer look at her features. Gone was the charred skin, bruises, wounds, and the hollowness of her features.
Now, she was as he remembered her.
Beautiful.
Ethereal.
He tucked her under the covers and that was when self-disgust kicked in. He was the King of the Wolfen and like some powerless blood slave, he enjoyed a Vampyr's blood. He even craved it.
He desired it unlike anything else before.
What he cannot understand even further is the fact that a lot of things changed since when he last saw her. She was their enemy now.
She was nothing but a traitor.
"Why?" he whispered.
Why did you betray me?
Why do I feel this way about you even after everything?
Why won't you tell me your secrets?
But there was no answer for Ailara was already fast asleep.
It was true that the Vampyrs and the Wolfen were enemies way before he was even born. But over the years, that feud was slowly healed. They even made an alliance when they wed their leaders.
What made Ailara turn her back on peace and wage war?
What made her change everything their parents worked so hard for?
Dimitri vowed that he will dig deeper. He will uncover all her secrets and then decide her fate. He lifted his hand and rubbed at the aching spot in his chest. Seeing her like this felt like a physical blow to him.
He didn't like feeling this way for an enemy.
Perhaps it's just one of the lingering effects of their bond which he complicated further when he allowed her to drink his blood.
