CHAPTER 8 – A FULL MOON

Castle Xanthe City of Aphelion, Wolfen Territory The Realm of Xathos

The moon was almost in the middle of the sky and the entire forest bathed in its silvery glow. Tonight, no clouds hid the moon from its perch in the sky.

And tonight, all of Dimitri's people were out to celebrate the full moon. Dimitri sat on his throne in a raised dais. The throne was made of wood and torches were lit on either side. From this vantage point, he could see his people clearly.

Several mated pairs were dancing to the rhythm of drums on the small clearing in front of him. Towards the side were a few unmated warriors who were beating on the drums. Before them were more torches. Around the dancing couple wove unmated women bearing trays laden with drink and food.

A few of the people he knew smiled at him and invited him to dance. He smiled and shook his head. All night, women have been parading themselves in front of him with hopes of catching his attention. They were beautiful and they wanted him.

The problem was: he didn't want them back.

And it's been that way ever since.

Every time he looked at a woman, all he saw was a pair of eyes as blue as the sky on a summer day and hair that looked like it was spun gold.

"Keras," he muttered under his breath. Once again, he was cursing his fate. Why were the Wolfen built this way? Legend says they were built in pairs and this is why it seems like their lives start the moment they find their mates.

"Are you not going to join the revelry, Dimitrios?" Argus asked. Dimitri sipped his drink and sat more comfortably.

"No."

From the corner of his eye, Dimitrios saw Argos smile at the unmated females. One of them will definitely be in Argos' bed tonight.

"Why? You're missing out!"

Dimitrios laughed and shook his head. "I'm afraid I don't have any choice in the matter."

In a heartbeat, the grin faded from Argos' face. "Dimitrios—"

Dimitri held up his hand. "I know what you are going to say. The gods have screwed me up with my mating. I am cursed for I will never find my true mate. I cannot do anything about it."

"We could always go the other way and kill her. Then you are free to find your true one."

If it was any other Wolfen who said it, his head would be separated from the rest of his body. But Argos was a friend and Dimitrios valued his counsel.

Argos shook his head. "It's not yet too late, my friend."

But it is.

"Don't worry about me, Argos! Go and enjoy the night. Dance with the females!" Dimitri commanded. With a roll of his eyes, Argos jumped from the dais and vanished amongst the throng of dancers.

At least he was having fun.

Ailara woke up when she heard the beat of the drums.

Slowly, she stood up and checked first if her stomach could handle the movement. When no spasms wracked her frame, she padded over to the window. One one corner of the room, she saw Andreas sleeping peacefully. Slowly, she lifted the furs covering the windows and slid the panels open.

She was greeted with the chilly air. Then, she basked in the glow of the full moon. Ailara opened the window further and completely removed the fur. Then, she closed her eyes and tilted her face towards the moon.

The light bathed her and she immediately felt its effects. Here on Xathos, every living being got their powers from the moon—but none as much as the Wolfen.

Ailara opened her eyes and inspected the sight before her. The village looked deserted and there weren't any lamps that were lit. But on the forest nearby, she saw the distant glow of several torches. The sound of the drums was also carried by the wind from that direction.

As silently as she could, Ailara moved to the other side of the tower and removed the furs from the window and opened it as well. This gave her a much better view of what was going on in the forest.

She saw the Wolfen as they revelled in the power the full moon gave them. Several of them were dancing while the others ate and drank.

As if on cue, the drums changed rhythm. Instead of the pounding and insistent beat, it became much slower, sensuous. The dancers changed movement in time with the music as well. Their movements were synchronized and it was a sight to behold.

Lovers moved closer to one another, every inch of them pressed together. Slowly, the women lifted their arms and wrapped it around their partner. The men moved their hands down from their partner's shoulders and then down to their waist and then bottom.

They did it very slowly as though they had all the time in the world to caress their lover. Their touch was also filled with passion but at the same time reverence. It was as if they couldn't keep their hands off each other but at the same time can't believe that the one they held in their arms were real.

Ailara sighed. It was one of the most beautiful things she's ever seen.

She heard a rustle and heard Andreas walk towards her. She smiled when she saw he did the same thing: looking at the moon and as though recharging his energy from its glow.

"I've been locked up so long that I have missed this," he told her.

"Dimitri must hate us so much then for him to deprive you of the simple joy of watching the moon," she told him.

Andreas sighed. "We can't blame him, princess. He doesn't know the truth."

Ailara reeled as if she's been struck. It was true, though. But it still stung. She wished she could tell him the truth and perhaps he'd find mercy in his heart and he'd set her and his people free.

"I know," she whispered softly. Andreas didn't reply and Ailara saw that he was looking at the Wolfen.

"They are beautiful, are they not?" she asked him.

"Ah, yes, princess," Andreas replied. But he averted his eyes for the Wolfen were dancing very provocatively. They just couldn't keep their hands off of each other. Some pairs were walking away from the dance floor – no doubt to go back to their homes or a quiet spot in the woods where they can be with one another.

She looked further away and saw the dais. In the middle of it sat Dimitri. Even from this distance, there was no mistaking him. He was the only one who emanated that much elegance and radiated so much power. He looked directly at his people but his thoughts seemed far away.

"Dimitri... He is not joining the festivities..." she murmured, mostly to herself.

"They say he does not join in these dances. That he is not interested in any woman. They say he prefers to run when the moon reaches its peak," Andreas answered.

Ailara forced her gaze away from Dimitri. Then, she recognized one of the warriors assigned to her before. He was in the middle of the clearing and he was dancing with his mate. He was also kissing her as if he was a drowning man and she was his oasis. She watched as he trailed kisses down his partner's throat and nuzzled the mating mark on the place where her shoulder met her neck.

Without thinking about it, Ailara's hand rose and touched her own mark. On contact, it was as if electricity travelled down her spine and made ever nerve ending come alive. Ailara shuddered from the sensation. Her knees almost buckled at the sudden, intense feeling.

When she recovered, she looked at Dimitri again and sky-blue eyes met ocean-blue ones.

And it was as if he knew the feeling that touching his mark on her skin evoked.

Ailara quickly looked away.

"Are you feeling better now, princess?" Andreas asked.

"Yes, much better, thank you. You should go back to sleep and rest some more."

"You should rest as well and regain your strength."

"I'm fine. I wish to see the moon a little bit more," she told him. She rarely saw the beauty of Selene's orb for she was as much a prisoner as Andreas was.

The priest went back to his corner. Before long, Ailara heard him softly snoring. She turned her attention back to the dancing Wolfen.

Truly, they were a sight to behold.

Ailara found herself wondering if Heilen never got the ability to control her, would she and Dimitri be one of those couples there? Would he look at her, hold her, and kiss her like that?

Ailara felt delicious heat pool between her legs as her thoughts strayed and she imagined herself dancing with Dimitri. She gasped as she recalled being in his arms as he drank her blood. She remembered his hands and how he squeezed every part of her he could reach as though he just couldn't get enough. Ailara closed her eyes and let the sensations wash through her.

When she opened them again, she met Dimitri's eyes once more.

From out of nowhere, Dimitri felt heat from the pit of his stomach which spread all over his limbs.

"What the hell?" he murmured.

He sniffed at the wine he was holding but his acute senses didn't pick up any trace of poison or herbs mixed with the wine.

Then, the feeling came again and this time it pooled in his center and a certain part of him started to harden.

"Keras," he whispered.

He lifted his head and scanned his surroundings but a figure in his tower caught his attention.

Ailara.

Because of the full moon, his senses were heightened. She was a long distance away but he saw her as though she was standing not more than a few feet away from him.

His eyes met hers and he saw her pale cheeks redden and her full lips part on a gasp.

"What are you up to?" he mouthed as he looked her straight in the eyes. Was this some sort of magic or perhaps one of her curses?

Before Dimitri could stand and go to her, one of the unmated females appeared at the foot of the steps leading to the dais.Dimitrios knew her. Her name was Nayah. She belonged to one of the richest and most prominent families of the Wolfen. Her father was one of Dimitri's father's most trusted warriors.

She wore a white dress that was so sheer that Dimitrios could see the outline of her entire body. She approached him slowly and bowed before him. Because the neckline of her dress was so low, he was given an excellent view of her breasts.

"Nayah," he said with a nod.

"A dance my king?" she asked softly.

Dimitrios laughed. "I don't dance."

The corner of the woman's lips turned up in a smile. "Then I shall dance for you."

She raised her hands high above her head and slowly brought them down. She touched the sides of hear breasts that were barely covered by her dress. She brought it lower to her waist which emphasized how tiny her waist is compared to her hips. Then, much lower to her hips and down her thighs.

The hem of her dress fluttered when the wind blew and showed a generous amount of pale thighs. She was so beautiful and she moved so gracefully that he couldn't tear his eyes away.

Then, she started swaying her hips from side to side. Some of the unmated warriors stopped whatever they were doing to gawk at her. Dimitrios could see the hunger in their eyes.

But Nayah didn't notice them. She had eyes only for him.

She brought her hands back up and then turned around. When she continued to move her hips from side to side together with the beat of the drum, Dimitrios couldn't stop his body from reacting.

He grew up with her and she was a dear friend to him. Her father was a close friend of his father's and they knew each other for as long as he could remember. But she never made any move to catch his attention... until now.

A growl was forced from his lips as he was given a more than generous view of Nayah's rear. His control was slipping for the moon was almost at its peak. Dimitrios wanted to grab her, touch her all over and make her sorry for teasing him.

He shifted in his seat when his cock felt so hard and his pants were suddenly too tight. He's never felt this way about any other female before. He'd spent the nights of the full moon alone—usually running around the forest.

But tonight, things could be different.

Suddenly, his mood changed. The fire in his blood was dampened and an icy feeling enclosed his heart. And then it was replaced with something akin to jealousy.

Dimitri looked at the tower and once more, Ailara's eyes were on him. Her eyes were the lightest blue and warm as a summer day.

But now?

They were very, very cold.
