9.

Sprawled out on my sofa I sighed. Danni sat in the arm chair Nick always occupied and I sighed again. I wished it were him sitting there beside me.

His words this morning played around my head on repeat.

God knows I'll be thinking of you.

Whether it were true, the words still shook me. I didn't really know what was happening or how it had even started with him. However, there was no doubting I wanted him.

Did I regret sleeping with him so soon?

To be honest, no. Things happened and I didn't regret them, not with Nick. I wasn't one to dwell on something that was not changeable.

Danni slurped on her can of coke and took a bite of her chicken burger. I had eaten mine on the way back from the burger shack Nick took me to last night.

"I thought you were vegetarian." I stated as I mindlessly flicked through the channels. Work had finished earlier again today, it seemed when Nick wasn't there, business wasn't booming. I bet all the women came to get a glimpse of him.

Currently, Glenn was out and about and Nick hadn't made contact since he left this morning. Danni was my only company.

"Don't even talk about it." Danni moaned.

"Why not?" I questioned. Danni laid her Burger down on the arm of the chair and flopped backwards.

"I'm a bad person." She replied. I chuckled quietly before diverting my attention back to the TV. Nothing was on, and quite frankly I was bored.

Even though it was turning half five, the skies were still light and the air warm.

In Australia, there was always something to do as we lived near the big city. Here, we lived near a town but the city was quite a while away. I loved it here, but there wasn't all that much to do, especially on a day like this.

"Do you want to go out and do something?" I asked. We were twenty one years old, we weren't some bored teenagers on a weekday. Even though, that's exactly what I felt like.

"Like what?" Danni asked. Suddenly, she shot up from the chair she was sat in. "I have the perfect place, actually. Come on, I'll show you." Danni got up from the arm chair and grabbed my arm before I had the chance to question her.

Where were we going?

Danni led me over to her small beatle which was situated on my drive and we both got inside.

"It's a pretty warm day and you remember that place we always used to go to? Where we sat on the grass and got pissed until morning?" My eyes widened at the memory that overcame me.

Of course I remembered. That place was the only place Danni and I spent our summer at the age of 16 when I came back from Australia one year.

I hadn't realised that would have been the last one we would ever spend together.

"Green fields?" I asked. My heart fluttered with excitement. Hell, that place was the only place that ever kept me sane that year, and Danni of course.

Things got easier, but that year was the hardest.

"Green mother flipping fields." Danni bounced in her seat as the car started to move and we set in to motion.

It didn't take long before the metal iron gates came in to view. In fact, it wasn't any longer than a ten minute drive.

The iron gates surrounded the field because the furled was a part of a large factory building which situated on the side of the field. However, the field was huge and the factory was being greedy.

Before, the iron gates would be left open and anyone could treck the field with no problems. Many young kids spend their summers on green fields and nobody had a problem with it.

Danni parked her beatle on the gravel and she led us over to the big iron gates.

"I haven't been her since you left." Danni muttered. She turned to look at me with twinkling eyes. "So this a special moment for our friendship."

"It's like being sixteen all over again." I stated back. Even though it was a tough year, I would love to go back in time where things were less stressful and a little more peaceful.

Nothing could touch you at sixteen.

"This times gonna be better, trust me."

The skies had suddenly turned a darker shade of blue, and I knew night was going to be upon us soon, in the next couple of hours. That made the experience all the more exciting.

Danni tried to nudge the iron gates open, however, they were firmly locked. Her brows furrowed at the offending lock hanging from the slider.

"It seems to be locked. They must have cracked down on teenagers using their field."

"Kill joys." I muttered.

Danni seemed to remember something, and before long she was circling the iron gates.

"What are you looking for?" I asked.

"There was a hole in the gates before, I'm trying to find it." Danni replied. Suddenly, she hit a spot in the iron gates and a little part of the metal flew backwards and the hole was formed. "Paid to get it locked but not fixed. School boy error, I say."

"Are you sure we should be going in?" I said. I hated to be boring and a kill joy myself, but I wasn't going to be happy if some alarm went off and I was shipped off to jail.

"Stop bitching and get in." Danni held the metal open and I crouched to move forward. Danni followed behind.

The factory was dark and still beside of the field, and infront of us vastly was the green field.

It looked exactly the same but with no beer cans and vodka bottles.

Danni led us over to the spot near the centre of the field and we sat down. Luckily, the air was still warm and it wasn't windy at all. I laid beside her.

"Just like old times." Danni sighed. I nodded, hoping she knew just how much this meant to me too. I hadn't meant to leave her and never return when I promised I would. I hadn't meant to stop everything.

Danni was my only friendship back then that meant something. She was the only person who didn't judge me for anything. And even though I let her down and left her lonely, she still forgave me, because that's who she was.

We were twenty one now and I didn't think I'd ever want to leave her again, not the way I did at sixteen. Not when she needed me.

"I'm sure creepy Steve was sick in this exact spot." Danni stated. I couldn't help but giggle.

"He probably did." I replied. "Creepy Steve was really..."

"Creepy?" Danni replied. I laughed. Steve was proper creepy. He'd do anything to get with anyone, and had no shyness about him. I wondered if he were still around this village, I wondered what he was up to now.

Danni and I stayed quiet for a while. We took in the surroundings and relaxed.

Danni sat up on her elbow to look at me. She wore a smile on her face.

"So, how's your boyfriend?"

"My boyfriend?" I spluttered. "Darling, I wish." We weren't that far yet, hopefully one day we would be, maybe.

There was no doubt I was petrified. I had never expected to like Nick as much as I did. I knew things were only going to get worse. Hopefully, things would work out, and even though I was as petrified as I was, I never gave up on something I wanted.

Nick was hot, charming and just...Nick. I wasn't scared to try. I wasn't going to pretend I didn't want him or I didn't like him. Maybe things were rushed, maybe I liked him more than I should have, but you can't put a timer on things like this. And pretending didn't make it any less real.

People really had to stop playing and tune in to their emotions.

"Things getting serious?"

"I wouldn't say serious, but we're getting somewhere. I like him, I think he likes me, for now." I shrugged, not knowing what else to say. I liked him and I think he liked me. It had only been a few weeks so nothing could be certain.

"You're hot stuff, why wouldn't he?" She laid back down on her back. "I want to meet him."

"You will, I'll introduce you properly." I stated truthfully. Maybe Danni would fall under his spell, too. I hoped she did in completely different ways.

Danni and I talked for hours in green fields. We talked about our past memories and our new ones that we were hoping to make in the future. We talked about everything we could think of and caught up in all of the gossip we missed out on.

Suddenly, however, when the clock struck 10:18, police sirens were heard outside of the iron gates. The lights flashed around the field and on the factory walls. My heart sky rocketed.

"What the fuck." I whispered as we both shot up from the floor. We walked towards the iron gates and was greeted head on with a police officer.

At first, I hoped it was Nick, yet instead stood a fourty year old woman.

"Excuse me girls, this is private property and we've had complaints from the security guards of the factory." The lady stated. "I'm not going to arrest you for trespassing, however, I need you both to come to the station."

"Shit." Danni muttered under her breath. The lady led us over to her car and led us both inside.

Once my back touched the sticky leather of the back seat, I turned to Danni with wide eyes.

"My fucking beatle is still on the drive." Danni let out.

"I think we have more important things to be worried about. For God sake, we're going to jail!"

"She said she wasn't arresting us. We're not hand cuffed, we're not going to jail." Danni stated as she looked longingly to her car. "I swear if she doesn't take me back here afterwards, I'll cut a bitch."

"Do you have to say things like that in the back of a police car?" I hissed her way.

"Shut up. Girls will love you in jail, you'll be fine."

"They'll love you, too. I heard they love rebellious red heads who state their vegetarians but eat chicken burgers." I retorted.

"Don't bring my misdoings in to this." Danni turned to look at me. "I'm happy I ate it before I go down for life."

I couldn't help but laugh.

The lady who drove us to the station flickered her eyes in to the rear view mirror. She shushed us and even though I was busting to laugh again, I controlled myself before we really did go down for life.

When the car pulled up at the police station, my heart started to pound again. It was all fun and jokes, however, this was serious.

I was outside a police station for trespassing. She said she wasn't arresting us, but what the hell was she doing? Taking us back for coffee? I didn't think so.

The lady led us in to the station. The reception area was full of blue plastic chairs and a massive desk with glass windows stood before us. It took up most of the room.

Danni and I looked incredibly innocent as we walked through the halls in to a back room. In the room was a table and three chairs. It looked more like an interrogation room than anything else.

What was going on?

The lady left without a second word and the door closed firmly beside her. Danni and I stood in the middle of the room not quite knowing what to do next.

"Where did she go?" Danni asked.

"I don't know." I shrugged. "I hope she doesn't leave us here all night."

"You can take the floor I'll have the table." Danni stated.

"I don't think so, lovely. You take the floor and I take the table. It's only fair as this is all your fault."

"My fault?" Danni spluttered. "Girl, I was just trying to have fun with y'all." Danni walked over to a plastic chair and sprawled out across it.

As I paced the floor, my ears perked at the sound of heavy boots on the floor and a masculine voice. I could just about make out the words as they walked closer.

"I don't want to be dealing with stupid little girls getting in to a spot of trouble. Just let them go." The voice came out. Another was a girl's.

"They're the orders, come on, it won't take long." She replied.

Suddenly, the door creaked open and my eyes adjusted to the light outside of the room.

My heart began to speed up as I locked eyes on Nick. I didn't even realise he was working so late. I hadn't spoken to him all day.

His face took my breath away, and suddenly I felt safe in his presence. He wouldn't take me down in to a cell. He'd get us out of here, I knew he would.

As soon as Nick caught sight of my form, his eyes widened. His small smile was easily seen by me, but easily misleading to others. His eyes twinkled my way, and I was so happy to see him.

"Nick." I breathed. And the sight of him in his uniform did things to me I wish they didn't. I didn't even know I had a thing for uniform until I met Nick.

Nick's eyes darkened to a dark blue when I breathed his name. He easily recovered himself, especially in front of his work colleague who looked comical next to him. She was blonde and mousey, so very small next to Nick's large frame.

And weirdly, she couldn't keep her eyes off him.

"Oh, so this is Nick?" Danni came up beside me to take in an eyeful. "When I said I wanted to meet him properly I didn't mean like this." She stated. "I've literally just been arrested."

"We didn't get arrested." I rolled my eyes. "Police officers don't lie."

Nick smirked largely at us both. He took my body in, a sudden look of worry casting over his face. As soon as he knew I was okay, his smirk returned.

"You know, trespassing is against the law." Nick stated. The girl beside him went to talk, but Nick held out his hand to stop her. "Cathy, I need to talk to you."

"Yes, officer." I walked forward and Nick led me out of the room. He continued to lead me down a hall until he opened the door to another back room. Luckily this time, it wasn't an interrogation room, but a small and empty staff room.

He flickered on the lights and as soon as the door was shut, he took hold of my waist and pushed me back on to the wall beside it.

"You were the last thing I expected to see tonight." Nick stated as he laid his lips to my neck. I sighed and relaxed against him.

"I hope I made your night."

"You really did, Angel." He breathed. "You were the best gift I could have received tonight."

"Aren't you mad I did something illegal?" I asked. "You're a police officer, you're meant to be against all this stuff."

"You trespassed, it's not exactly murder is it?" He laughed. I let out a breath of relief. I had never been in trouble much, so this was out of the ordinary. I felt more panicked than I should have been.

My heart lifted and I decided to play.

"So I'm not getting punished?" I asked mischievously. I laid a hand to Nick's chest. "That's a shame, officer." Nick's eyes turned dark again, and the smile on his face fell.

"Angel, stop playing."

"I've been a very naughty girl." I batted my eyelashes his way. He growled before pulling me away from the wall and pushing me on the sofa that laid across the opposite wall.

"Didn't I tell you? I love naughty girls."

"Aren't you lucky?" I stated with a smile.

"Luckiest man in the world." He laid his body across mine. He was so heavy and full of muscle. Masculinity shot through his body like a wave.

"Didn't I tell you that I love a man in uniform?"

"Ahh." He smiled. "I guess you're the lucky one."

"You could say that." I shrugged. He smiled down at me, his eyes bright.

"You know, I hate that room."

"What room?" I asked. Nick grinded above me, I couldn't help but moan.

"The interrogation room." He replied. "But seeing you there, it made it a whole lot better. Even in a room full of black, you make it full of colour."

"It's my tattoos." I stated as I looked down at my colourful arms.

"It's the way I see you, bursting with colour and happiness. You're not like me, you're not all black and white, bleak and dark. You've got something I haven't, you're everything I'm not."

"Don't be silly, Nick. Don't put yourself down. You've given me more in these last few weeks than anyone else has before."

"Only because I'm trying." Nick stated. "It's hard not to when I feel the way I do about you."

And little did he know, I felt the same way about him, too.
