My dream with Alec consisted of further dissecting my abilities. After I explained to him what happened today with the dragon and how I healed its broken wing with just the touch of my fingers, he set onto a determined path to figure out exactly what happened and how I did it.
"I don't know, Alec!" I said in frustration. "I felt a desire to heal the dragon and I just touched him and he healed." I plopped myself on a log. I also remembered the desire to break the wing further, but I decided not to mention that part just yet.
"You felt a desire?" He said in a condescending tone. "Anyone can feel the desire to heal someone, but they don't always possess that ability."
I sputtered for words. "There was this sensation in me." I could see he still wasn't happy with my response. "When I saw the broken wing, it felt like every bone in my body was pushing me towards the dragon. My mind was telling me that I could heal him and once I made contact with the dragon, I felt the desire grow and then the wing was healed and he flew away." I wasn't sure how much more specific I could get. "That's all I know."
Alec stared deeply, focusing on nothing. He then snapped his gaze to me and without warning, he brought a knife to his arm and sliced a large gaping wound into his flesh.
I got up and told yelled at him. "What are you doing?" Blood ran down his arm in a fast waterfall. It dripped onto the ground and pooled quickly into a puddle.
"Do you feel anything?" He said forcefully.
I scrambled to find words as my mind was reeling with worry. "I-" But I couldn't find the words. "I don't know!"
Alec then proceeded to slice another large gash in his arm. "Stop butchering yourself!" I yelled, moving towards him. I grabbed his arm in my hands, which were soon sticky with blood.
"Do you feel anything?" He extended his arm more fully. I looked at his arm and something inside of me stirred slightly, but it wasn't as powerful as when I had seen the dragon's broken wing.
"I think so." I tried willing the wounds to heal, but nothing happened. "I can't do it!" I felt defeated. His flesh was gaping open and the blood was pooling out and yet, the sensation within me was barely there. "I don't know what to do!"
He threw me off of his arm and held the knife up high. With a final stare that was as hard as stone, he brought down the knife into his abdomen. I jumped forward, but it was too late. The knife had sliced deep into his flesh. A steady stream pooled his clothing.
"What are you doing?" I yelled again, watching as he threw the knife onto the ground. "You're going to kill yourself."
"Not if you heal me." He sunk forward and kneeled on the ground.
I watched in desperation as the blood seeped into his clothing and dripped onto the ground. "I don't know how!" I felt useless as I just watched him.
"Just focus and clear your mind." He forced out through gritted teeth. He was trying to sound calm but, I could clearly hear the pain lacing his words. "And don't let me die."
I fell to my knees in front of him, thinking about how I would be able to calm my mind's thoughts in such a situation.
"Don't make me stab myself again." His laugh was forced. He began to cough and blood speckled his lips.
"Okay, okay." I breathed out shakily. My hands were held uselessly in front of me. They shook as I kept watching the blood pool from his wounds.
I searched for that sensation inside of me. In my mind, I knew I wanted to heal his wounds, but I didn't know how to put it to use. Come on, Navi. I willed my power to come forward, but it stayed put in the pit of my stomach. It almost felt like it was taunting me, dancing around my grasp so I couldn't hold onto it.
"You've done this before." Alec's breathing was becoming heavily labored. "Just focus, and don't try to force it. If what you say is true, this should come naturally to you." Bloody drool fell from his mouth as he tried to speak.
My brow was scrunched tight in frustration and worry, but in the midst of all the chaos running through my thoughts, I slowed down and listened to him. Instead of trying to grab my power and pull it forward, I extended a mental hand and let it come to me. Slowly, yet surely, the tingling sensation began to grow and it latched onto me. My skin prickled as the feeling spread throughout my entire body. My fingertips itched to go towards the open wounds and once I made contact with Alec's skin, his wounds sealed tightly shut, not even a trace of a scar was left on his skin. Only the blood that stained his clothing was left as a reminder of what happened.
I stood onto my feet, angry with Alec. "You could've died! How were we to know that this plan of yours would actually work?" My voice was strained from the endeavor I was put through.
"You must train in all aspects of yourself. Now you know how to fully grasp the concept of healing someone." He stood from the ground and looked at his bloody clothing. "Job well done."
I awoke from my sleepless dream, feeling more tired than ever. The sun was poking through the trees and Naxan was curled up around me, the end of his tail resting on my feet. After figuring out my ability to heal wounds, Alec decided that was enough of training my powers and decided hand to hand combat was next.
I rolled up the sleeve of my shirt and noted more bruises had developed on my skin. I was not at all experienced enough with fighting, but I was able to endure longer periods of training and dodge a couple of the blows Alec tried to land against me. Even though he said I was making progress, I still felt inexperienced and probably looked horrific with my slow movements and sloppy counterattacks.
Letting out a heavy breath that made Naxan stir, I watched my peaceful dragon until he opened his eyes. "Stop spying." Naxan moved his head and yawned. His mouth opened large and saliva strings clung to his teeth.
"I'm not spying." I softly laughed, scratching his jaw. He half closed his eyes, a rumbling growl erupted from his chest as if he was purring like a cat.
"Forgiven."
I smiled at my dragon's content state. Such a big creature and yet, such a softy. "So, Naxan. Want to go flying?" I stopped scratching his scales and he hummed.
"Did not hate." His eyes wandered to the sky. He got up from laying down and stretched out his body. To me, he was looking more and more like a cat every moment.
Naxan turned his glaring gaze to me. "I am dragon." He stretched out his wings and smoke billowed through his open maw.
I grabbed my bag and secured it onto my back. Naxan laid back down on the ground for me to scramble onto his back, and with only a word of notice, he shot into the air.
Quickly pushing myself flat onto his back, I watched the world from a new perspective. Before, when Naxan and I first flew together, we were solely focused on getting to the dragon who required help. Now, I could focus on just Naxan and I in a state of calmness.
I peeked my head up and watched as we barely skimmed the tops of the trees. I stuck one of my hands down and it slapped a nearby branch, I grabbed a fistful of leaves and let them scatter in the soaring air. They danced behind us, Naxan's wind stream causing them to cascade violently in different directions. I lost sight of them quickly as Naxan shot forward, his tail snapping behind him.
"Hold on." I did as Naxan said, grabbing onto a horn that jutted out of his back. He redirected himself and we were climbing higher into the sky. The clouds around us parting in our wake. Eventually, I couldn't see the world below us and all I could see was white.
Naxan stopped pumping his wings and came to a stop, snapping out his wings and catching the air thermals to hold him in place. I sat up and looked around us. We were in a thick mesh of clouds that spiraled out of their shape as Naxan flew through them. My hair was becoming damp from the heaviness of the clouds.
"Rain is coming." Naxan's voice spoke in my head. "Dragons of storm like this weather."
I wondered what he meant by that.
"Watch. They are here."
I hurriedly whipped my head around to watch our surroundings, but I could see nothing through the clouds. My heart rate increased as I knew not of what was around us. It felt odd not being able to see anything as well as not being able to sense anything.
A small ripple of light flashed through the sky and I saw the outline of a dragon beside us. It faded away and I was back to seeing nothing but grey. Water droplets began to escape the clouds and fall around us. Their descent started slow, but with the crack of lighting around us, the clouds released all the water they were carrying and I was soon drenched from where I was sitting.
I didn't mind too much, in all honesty. I was enjoying my time spent bonding with my dragon and I was not about to complain about my clothing getting soaked. Those negative emotions would just ruin the moment.
Another flash of lightning cracked the air, revealing more than one dragon in the clouds around us. The hair on my arms began to raise with goosebumps. Naxan moved his wings and we ascended higher into the clouds and broke through the thick mesh. We came to a pocket within the clouds and I watched in awe as streaks of gold shot in and out of the mesh of grey and white. The dragon's scales shone brightly whenever a flash of lightning ran through the clouds.
Naxan and I stayed our distance from them, as to not to disturb their presence. But, I had a feeling they knew we were there.
To our left, a dragon shot out of the clouds and flew over top Naxan and I. It flew to the center of the cloud opening where it was on clear display and flew around in circles. I watched it in awe. They were beautiful to look at.
"Naxan is more beautiful."
I laughed, patting his side. "Yes, Naxan. You are."
The golden dragon I was watching was suddenly enveloped in a bolt of lighting. I gasped, not expecting the sudden horror.
"Watch," Naxan said.
My eyes never left the dragon. Instead of the dragon screaming out in pain and falling in a heap of smoke and burnt flesh, it spread its wing out wide and absorbed the lightning bolt. It then released the bolt through its maw in a powerful flash, and the entire sky erupted in white. Sparks flew down around us like the stars had detached themselves from the sky and fell towards earth in a dazzling blaze of heat. I avoided the falling sparks, twisting and turning, attempting to not be burned by them.
The golden dragon disappeared within the clouds, but more took its place. I watched as lightning burst through the clouds and the dragons were right there to absorb the bolt. Their bodies gleaming with the electrical current coursing through them.
At one point, one dragon absorbed the lightning bolt but didn't immediately fire it back into the sky. It held onto it and the scales lining its body shone brighter than the sun. It was hard to watch, but I didn't want to miss a thing. The lightning traveled along its body, getting bigger and brighter in intensity. It was like the dragon was channeling the lightning to become stronger. The dragon let out a high pitched cry and the lightning was sent spiraling in all directions. Naxan had to move out of the way from being hit by one of the bolts.
I held on tightly, closing my eyes shut as we ducked out of the way of the dragon's assault. We steadied and I sat back up looking around. "That was close." I breathed.
"Battle cry," Naxan said as he circled the clearing. "We go." Naxan descended through the tormenting weather. Rain pelted my face in cold bursts, even when I tried wiping away the raindrops, more replaced their spot in seconds.
The storm was far more intense from below. Naxan quickly flew lower to the ground, getting away from the harsh weather. We were over top of a range of mountains that had multiple other rock formations around it. I think these mountains were called volcanos, where the inside of it was so hot that the rock melted into a red, hot liquid. Naxan flew around them until he was able to find a cave opening. He angled his body towards the opening and landed with a skidding halt.
The cave was large enough to fit multiple dragons through the opening and it stretched on further than I could see. I could feel other presences with us, but I could not see them due to how dark it was. I peered through Naxan's vision to get a good look at the cave but regretted it as soon as I did so. It was one thing to be wondering what was in the dark, but it was a completely different story when actually seeing what was lurking with us.
There were more dragons than I could count that were creeping closer in on Naxan and me, circling us in and blocking our exits. We were trapped.
