It was the spookiest night of the year: Halloween. The holidays were my favorite time of the year and I thought Halloween was the perfect kickoff. The scary movies, the change of weather and the candy was the most epic way to begin the end of the year. Every Halloween since I was a teenager, I went out and did something. Whether it was trick or treating, partying or clubbing, something had to be done.
This year, I was lucky to have a girlfriend who took Halloween just as seriously as I did. Apparently, every year Andy's crew threw a party at the main clubhouse in Santa Monica. It was a big deal and she talked to me about it for weeks since it took so much preparation. She wouldn't let me go through the neighborhood for a couple weeks because she wanted the whole thing to be a crazy surprise. I was pretty excited, but I wasn't sure how crazy and how much preparation a Halloween party would need. The buildup was driving me crazy but I felt like I would be left unfulfilled.
"Damn, I can't wait for you guys to see it," Andy told me as she pulled into the neighborhood of the clubhouse. More cars than ever were parked along the streets and all the houses were decorated with orange string lights. Hundreds of people were walking down the streets in costumes and towards the main clubhouse. I knew they were apart of Andy's crew. What fool would attend a party waist deep with crazy ass gangsters? Even wild, teenage me wouldn't pull up to a De Palma Family or any other gang event without an invite.
"Peep how all the cars are black. You can only roll up to the party in a black car," Andy said with a chuckle. She was so eager about this damn party. The closer we got to the clubhouse, the giddier I got as well. Mia was in the backseat staring out the window as if she was a little child ready to jump out and go trick-or-treating. Tyra and Lisa were back there with her, but they were too busy double checking each other's make-up to notice anything.
"Bebé, if all the cars have to be black then why are you rolling in an orange one right now," I asked Andy as I glared over towards her. She had bought an orange ass Maserati sedan just for Halloween purposes as if it was nothing. Let me rephrase that, she spent $150,000 just to drive a car for one f-cking night. Literally, what the f-ck? I wasn't upset but I was sure as hell shocked that she could just throw away money like that. I knew Andy was filthy rich but she was pretty humble with it so to see her just drop 150 grand like that was f-cking mind-blowing, and kind of a turn on.
"I'm the head honcho, darlin'. I can do what I want and it's only right for me to stand out," Andy told me as we pulled up to the clubhouse. There looked like there was literally no way into the house. The lawn was packed in the front and the back. So many people were in the pool, you couldn't even really swim but just stand there. Loud music was blaring and the smell of marijuana knocked me out before I could get out of the car. Andy parked in her reserved spot, which was the only vacant spot on the lot. When she parked her car, everyone standing outside began cheering and I rolled my eyes.
"Do you always have to make a big scene," I asked jokingly. Everyone loved her so every time we went somewhere where her Family was, they cheered and greeted her so much that it was annoying.
"Hey, what can I say? They love me, Woody," Andy told me before leaning over and giving me a tender kiss.
Oh, did I forget to mention? Andy and I had the most adorable f-cking costumes. Before we arrived at the party, I made Mia take over a hundred pictures of us. While I was Woody, Andy was, well, Andy from Toy Story. It was Andy's idea and I f-cking loved it. While Andy was dressed like a wannabe cowboy, I was dressed exactly like Woody and even wrote her name on the bottom of my boots. Honestly, it was the best costume I ever wore for Halloween and I wasn't sure how I could top it.
Mia, Tyra and Lisa dressed as the Hocus Pocus witches but they made it really sexy. The whole crew looked good tonight and I was pretty sure we would have the best costumes at the party. I couldn't wait to see what Andy's friends were wearing. When we got out of the car, it seemed like everyone moved out of the way so we could make our way inside of the clubhouse. As we got closer to the house, I noticed small, minor details like the cobwebs attached to the house and pumpkins and hay spread across the lawn. I could see that taking like a day to prepare but definitely not weeks.
When I got inside, however, that was a whole different ballgame. As if it wasn't already packed to the brim with gangsters, they had hired scary ass, awkward people dressed up in horrifically realistic costumes of ghouls, zombies and werewolves. How did they even book this gig? What if they scared one of the gangsters and got shot in the process? Thinking about the mishaps were making me more nervous than the actual scarers. The house was very dim with only orange lighting and the slight lighting from bats which were projected onto the ceiling.
There were little side things such as stations where you bobbed for apples, photobooths and some game called 'Stab a Gang Member.' Which I guess was the gangster version of 'Pin the Tail on The Donkey' but it way more dangerous. They basically chased each other with knives. The party was f-cking ludicrous and I wasn't sure if I would make it out the damn place alive, but it was still lit. The whole point of Halloween was to be scared, I guess. I just held onto Andy's arm for dear life and hoped no one mistakenly stabbed us.
"Look at this fool! Dressed up as Aladdin and sh-t," I yelled as I ran up on my brother and Gabriela. I had invited them to the party and my parents as well. I thought it would be a good time for them to finally meet Andy, but I didn't know the party would be this crazy. At this rate, I hoped my parents skipped out on the party.
"Look at you, fool! Woody? Really? Andy and Woody? That's actually pretty cute," Camilo said as he gave me a tight hug. His face was slightly red and I could tell from how distant his eyes seemed that he was pretty tipsy. He gave Andy a hug too and tipped her cowboy hat further down. "How ya doin', partner," he said in a very sh-tty Southern accent.
Andy chuckled and pushed his shoulder. "Jasmine and Aladdin. You two should've brought the little one. She could've been Abu." I gave Andy a skeptical look. No way was my sobrina going to bring her cute ass to a crazy party like this. "Okay, maybe she shouldn't have come but come on, she'd be cute as a little Abu."
"We know. Trust me, we did family photos before we left the house. She was Abu. I have pictures," Gabriela said.
"Show me," I squealed as I let go of Andy and moved next to my sister-in-law. When she showed me Camila in a monkey suit, I nearly cried. I was guilty of taking the phone away from her and peering down at it. "You all are so cute. Look at my little bebé."
Camilo nuzzled his face against my shoulder. Yeah, this fool was definitely wasted. "I know, I'm the cutest."
I laughed and pushed his head away before handing the phone back to Gabriela. "Boy, you wish. We should take group photos. All four of us. Did Mama and Papi come?"
"They did. They're outside in the backyard. This party is f-cking insane. Mama is so out of place and it's hilarious," Camilo told me with a laugh. "Andy, one of your guys jumped on the table and she grabbed the nearest broom and beat him until he got off. I was scared for my life, but everyone thought it was funny."
Andy laughed and shrugged her shoulders. "Hey, my crew aren't that bad once you get used to 'em. I know this party is crazy. I told Delaney not to invite your parents, but she didn't believe me when I told her we get f-cking crazy on Halloween. But we should greet them, darlin'." Andy turned to me and nodded her head towards the backyard.
"Yeah, we'll be back after we talk to those two."
Andy took my hand and led me out to the backyard. Some dumbass guy was butt ass naked on top of a table yelling, 'De Palma for life' over and over again. I wasn't sure if I was at a frat party or a gangster party, but either way, I looked the other way. The last thing I wanted to see was some random ass balls.
It wasn't hard to find my parents. They stuck out like a sore thumb. My mother was shielding her eyes while my father looked down at his phone as if he was reading something. I approached them from behind and tickled my father's sides. "Boo!" He nearly jumped out of his skin as he quickly turned around. When he saw it was me, he put away his phone and growled before picking me up. He squeezed the f-ck out of me during the air hug.
"You scared the hell out of me! I was wondering where you were, Camila," my father said as he put me down. He put his hand on his heart and took a deep breath. "Damn, you really gave your old man a scare."
"Sorry, Papi! It was just too good of an opportunity! Hi, Mama." I pulled my mother into a hug as well.
When we pulled away, she fixed my hair and laughed as looked me up and down. "Are you a cowboy, Camila?" How dare she underestimate my costume? My parents were basic ass vampires and had the nerve to think I was just a 'cowboy.'
"I'm Woody! Only the best cowboy in the Wild West. And Andy is, well Andy. You know from Toy Story?" My parents stared at me as if I was talking in a foreign language. What the f-ck? They had never seen Toy Story? I was definitely going to make them watch it with me one day. Since we got to know each other, we've been spending more time together and it was usually them educating me on our family and culture. Now, it was my turn to educate them.
I dropped the Toy Story thing and stepped aside to stand next to Andy. "Well, guys, this is Andy. I'm sure you already got that, but here she is live in the flesh." Andy laughed and kissed my temple before stepping forward to reach her hand out to my father.
They shook hands for an abnormal amount of time and kept weird eye contact while saying how nice it was to finally meet each other. When it got to my mother, Andy was gentler and even kissed the back of her hand. My mother's cheeks flushed and she gave me a look with her eyes that basically said, 'You got yourself a nice one.' Andy was so good with older ladies, well, ladies in general.
"Andy, I know this might not be the time but do you mind discussing some business really quick? I just want to put it all out there about the Diablos. We're no threat and I want to run that by you and some other things," my father said after small talk.
"Yeah, of course. I know the perfect place we can talk."
My father took his wife's hand. "We're going to talk with Andy. We'll be back, Camila. Please, find your brother. I worry he's going to drink himself into a coma and Gabriela is just going to sit there and watch. Don't know what to say about those two."
"Yeah, I'll definitely make sure those two are okay," I told him with a small laugh. I hated being alone at f-cking parties. Now, I had to quickly find someone I knew. Andy gave me a kiss on the cheek before walking off in the darkness with my parents. I guess getting far away from the party so they could actually hear each other was the best bet.
I went back inside the party and thankfully, it didn't take me long to spot Andy's friends. Lin and her wife were making out while Leo pretended she was puking and Rafael laughed along. Tagging along with them was the new addition, Eva, I still wasn't sure how I felt about her. She didn't talk much, at least not to me.
"Delaney! Look at you! Do you have a lasso because I'd love for you to reel me in," Leo told me obnoxiously. She couldn't go a day without being annoying, could she?
Rafael laughed and tipped his imaginary cowboy hat. "Howdy. Where's Andy? I can't wait see how stupid she looks."
"This year's costume is pretty good, but last year she dressed as Elvis and you would think she would look good but sideburns just aren't her thing," Lin said, once she finally detached her lips from Jenny's.
"Andy's talking to my parents. Did you guys really come as the Mystery Gang?" Rafael was Shaggy, Leo was Scooby, Lin was Fred while Jenna was Daphne and Eva was Velma. They pretty much got the costumes down but I kind of felt bad that Andy didn't dress her part as the gang too. I guess there wasn't enough space and her and I had cuter costumes anyways. "Leo as Scooby, that makes sense. She's always thirsty and hungry for attention."
The gang laughed, all except Leo. "Mia likes how thirsty I am," she shot back at me.
I chuckled and looked around us. "Wait, where's Mia? She's at the party but wait, she's not with you so what can that mean? Oh, yeah, she doesn't want your thirsty ass."
On that one, I got a high five from Rafael. He jumped up and down dramatically. "Dude, she's roasting you. What do you have to say to that?"
As if on cue, Mia walked up and wrapped her arm around Leo's shoulder. "I've been looking all over for you," she said before kissing her cheek.
Leo smirked as she stared at me. "I don't have anything to say." She focused her attention back on Mia and they started whispering to each other. And it wasn't sexual whispering, but more like, cute, flirting type whispering. Wait, was Leo actually feeling Mia? This was really a scary ass Halloween.
We talked and joked around for about half an hour until Andy appeared once again. My parents weren't with her and her face was pale. "We got to go," she said abruptly. "Mia, Jenny, Delaney, I think it's best if you guys hang back but we really need to go like right now. If you're drunk, sober up."
"What's going on," I asked Andy as I looked around for any sight of my parents. Did something go down between them?
"Another killing happened and this time it's even more f-cked up. If you want to tag along you can but it's really bad. Your parents are back there talking to Camilo and Gabriela. Camilo threw up all over his pants or something. I don't know but if you're going to come then let's go. It just happened, the quicker we get there, the better." Andy was so serious that even Leo had gotten serious. Though my family was still at the party, I headed out with the crew. Honestly, I was just really nosey and interested in the whole mystery of a serial killer being on the loose.
Andy tossed her keys to Mia and said she could drive her car back home when she was ready. Mia nearly flipped the f-ck out at the fact she was going to be able to drive a Maserati. She tried to stay serious for such a grave situation but her smile quickly showed. "Okay, I'll be careful with it. You all be careful, especially you, Delaney! I'll kick your ass if you die!"
"I'll be good, girl. Drive safe!"
We all hopped into Rafael's SUV but Andy took the wheel. She didn't drop any details until she began driving. "They killed f-cking Mario." I didn't know who Mario was but the distraught sounds of gasps let me know he was pretty damn important or they cared a lot for him. "I don't care if they don't give us a damn clue this time. I'm going to find the son of a b-tch and make them suffer."

Are you guys excited for another crime scene investigation? Lmfaoooo. It's ironic that half of them are dressed as the Mystery Gang when this happens, lmfao. I'm just now realizing.
