The twinkling fluorescent lights danced across the diners ceiling. I sat across from the Beta glaring definitely. His lip was curled back revealing his feelings towards the blatant act of disrespect. The Diner is now a wordless graveyard now that the Beta and I entered.
My stomach rumbled loudly as a waiter slowly came down to take our order. The Beta was glancing over the menu as if he didn't know what he wanted.
"I'll have the soup of the day with a bread roll," I ordered for myself before he could stop me.
The waiter stood frozen as black eyes looked into mine. I could see his jaw knot together as he clenched his teeth.
"You're taking too long which is irritating me in my hormonal state."
"My mate will have what she ordered and I will have the eighteen ounce rib eye blue, onion rings, all the veg and extra fries."
My eye twitched at his order. I thought about the children that could be fed with that amount of food in sector two. Beau's whole class might have been able to get a full belly out of that order, something they aren't use to.
I avoided eye contact with him not wanting to talk to him, we hadn't talked much in the hospital. My eyes felt gritty from the tiredness, we had waited twelve hours for all the test results to come back. The babies were measuring up to around eighteen weeks.
The news still hasn't settled with me yet, how could they possibly be that developed yet? The doctors decided that I would be monitored twice a week so that my health and the babies was properly taken care of.
I looked at the Beta who held the ultrasound pictures in his hand. His finger etched across the features that could be seen of the devolving little beings. A ghost of a smile had been glued to his face since he heard the heart beats for the first time. I could see the adoration in his eyes as he absorbed the photos, memorizing every detail to his brain.
I wasn't sure how I felt about them. Ever since I found out they were successful implanted and growing I felt trapped in limbo. I was not only in a state of shock but denial. For so long I had told myself that I would never carry a Were child because their race were monsters, but what if my children were different. What if they grew up to be like Beau or myself? Both children with a mother who initially never wanted them but she was devoted and loved them with all her heart even if she didn't believe it.
In the six weeks that I had to myself, I thought a lot with no distractions. If I was to paint the whole werewolf race with the same brush and call them monsters, I would have to do the same with humans. Werewolves justified their use of oppression and segregation on us because the different genetics we had, but humans for hundreds of years done the same thing to minority's without any excuse.
I came to the conclusion that both races had faults, what I would morally teach my children is what mattered, because that is what counted in society. Strong morals. My children would grow up with a voice of power in their society and their morals would tell them the right way in how to use it.
"How are you feeling?" His deep voice rumbled from across the table.
"I'm fine still shocked," I grumbled giving him an honest answer.
"Likewise, didn't think you would be this far along with our pups. I guess I was expecting a longer pregnancy because you're human." His hand reached across the table and rested on mine making me glare.
"Is there many successful human and Were pregnancies?" It was something I was always curious about since we weren't educated much about the mixed pairing.
"Yes it's just like what humans would consider a normal pregnancy, but the growth rate is different for all individual pregnancies, normally it's slower when it's a mixed mating. Human and Were matings have increased in the last thirty five years and ninety five percent of pregnancy are healthy and full term." He explained while sipping on the tar in his bone china cup.
His dark gaze shifted outside the window, peering at his own reflection. Although his face was passive his eyes showed the many questions he was asking and answering internally. I pulled my hand out from under his as our food was placed down in front of us.
His bare chest flexed as he lifted up his cutlery. My eyes scanned his bare skin noticing the many scars that tarnished his skin. They obviously weren't new but this was the longest I had openly stared at him and I was only noticing them now.
For the amount of time that I had spent in the Betas company and I had always just thought of him as a dark lingering presence. I really didn't know that much about him, it wasn't that I wanted to know the minor details about his life before me but the fact that he didn't want to share them with me was strange. I was his mate after all, in most cases every detail of life is overly shared between mates.
"What happened to your parents?" I blurted out before sipping on my soup.
His body tensed his knife stopping it's attack of slicing into the dripping red meat on his plate. His dark eyes looked into mine and for once he did not try concealing his emotion. Surprise. His eyes screamed surprise from across the table, shocked that I had asked him a personal question.
"My mother had me young, at the age of sixteen. It wasn't uncommon for she-wolves to meet their mates at that age if their mates were older and in my mothers case her mate was four years her senior. She was quiet a timid woman that never questioned her mate just how most she-wolves are, but she was an amazing mother. She was caring and kind-" something you didn't possess I though to myself as he scratched along his jaw a distant look in his eye.
"I was always by her side, she nicknamed me Shadow from a very young age," a smile teased the sides of his lips.
"She's the reason I can cook so well. She died nearly six years ago," he whispered out. His features did not seem as harsh, how they normally were and sadness seeped from his sockets. He looked vulnerable.
My brows furrowed in thought at what he had just told me. Obviously the loss of his mother was quiet painful like most deaths.
"What about you father?" I probed since he hadn't revealed anything about him.
He just looked at me without muttering another word and continuing eating his food. The sound of the knife carving into the steak was the only noise to float between us. I stayed quiet not wanting to start a new conversation and enjoyed the silence.
It wasn't long before we were back in the car driving quietly. There was no background noise of a radio just the purring of the engine.
"My mother's surname was Moloch, she was the only child of her parents. When there is no male heir to the higher ranking wolves the female offspring's mate adopt the title and surname of their mate."
I sat quiet and confused as to why he was telling me. I had very little interest in who's surname he donned. The car slowly stopped in the front garden, we sat quietly neither of us moving. I could see the guards that were posted at the house, I could distinctly see the glazed over look they both had as they were mind linking.
The door on the car swung open, for once I took the Betas hand as I clutched my belly while maneuvering out of the big vehicle. I could see the rigid frame of the wolves on the porch as we approached, the grimace on their face as we walked by wasn't hidden.
I felt a sense of relief once the door closed behind us and I was away from the prying eyes of the guards. It was something I had noticed a lot when I did go out in public with the Beta and I'm sure he had noticed it too.
The silence continued and the only thing that could be heard was our footsteps padding across the floor in two different directions. I went into the sitting room alone, happily content with my own presence. I picked up the remote that I know how to use despite the many buttons and different confusing color codes.
I flicked through the channels until one caught my eye. It seemed to be one of the many Were news channels, there was a photo being displayed of six men that were clearly human that harnessed many fire arms. At their feet lay at least fifteen bodies, some were Wolves in their wolf form and their human form, there was one body that was mid shift, murdered just as he transitioned. I could feel my eyes dampen as I took in the sight of the many young children's bodies, their blood weeping from the puncture holes of bullet staining the grass where there body was sprawled. Four adults lay dead at the feet of hunters and the rest were innocent children he suffered a gruesome death. I raised my hand to my mouth as I let out a sob as I looked at the children much younger than Beau. One of the little girls heads were turned towards the camera her big lifeless eyes staring directly at the person taking the photo, her hair was matted to the side of her face, the blonde now stained crimson.
"Today we remember the massacre of Beta and Beta female Moloch who were educating the young pups of the importance of the ecosystem within the pack grounds. We still mourn the devastating tragedy of losing such-" the news reporter went on as tears hotly caressed my cheeks.
"He was a weak man," came his dark rumbling voice from the doorway.
"Who?" I sniffled out.
"Than Moloch, my grandfather wouldn't hand down his title to him until he absolutely had to. Than was only Beta for a year before the massacre and the title was given to me." He sat down beside me tensely.
"He was a pathetic excuse for a man never mind the honor of being a Beta. He was meant to protect them, he couldn't even do that. His death and failure was punishment from the universe, he preyed on the defenseless something the rest of the pack didn't know." His shoulders knitted together the more he talked about it, resembling a scared animal before it pounced in self defense.
"He was your father?" There was no comment to my question. I looked down at his forearms noticing little white lines that littered the length of his arm. They weren't as prominent as the ones on his chest but they were there when you looked closely.
"He gave you them?" I whispered out reaching out and pointing at his scars.
His eyes were wide and frightened, like a child.
"He did and my mother turned a blind eye to it, there is nothing worse than growing up knowing the hatred of a parent. He wished I was never born, would beat me and hoped it was fatal enough to put me six foot under." His jaw clenched as he blinked his teary eyes.
"I know what it's like to grow up with a parent that resents you," I swallowed hard. My mother inflicted wounds on me that couldn't be seen, only felt and leaving internal scars.
"By focusing only on the hatred you're letting him win. You should focus on the love that your mother had for you, that's all that should matter! She wouldn't want you harboring hatred towards anyone or yourself. All you need to know is that it's not your fault that he felt that way about you, it was not your fault." I whispered softly as he cradled his face in his hands.
His back was on show, apart from my name his back was covered in scars, some were even raised and still had a purple color to it.
"You don't want to become him," my voice was cold as I thought of all the horrid things he has done to me.
I felt a sharp kick suddenly, it wasn't faint like the previous ones I had experienced. I raised my shirt until it was just below my bra and in astonishment I could see something move inside me. I laughed at the feeling, I didn't know if it was a foot or a hand.
Donovan moved to kneel in front of me. His dark eyes scanning my stomach for the upcoming movement. He reached his hand out but it hovered.
"Can I touch it?" I nodded my head in shock.
He smiled as he felt one of the babies move under then palm of my hand. He leaned forward his forehead touching my pump whispering things that I could not hear. I could feel something wet touch my skin.
"I will never let a wolf or a man hurt any of you," he mumbled softly with a cracked voice.
He glanced up at me with wet cheeks making me quietly gasp.
"Or you, ever again I promise." He looked into my eyes with meaning before leaning back against my swollen stomach whispering things my human hearing couldn't make out. I frowned confused, I lifted my hand and petted his head like the mutt he was as his tears continuously rolled down my plump belly.
Hey guys! Hope you enjoyed this weird confusing chapter.
