EDITED: 18 March 2019.

Diavolo

I was slowly losing my sanity. Running a rough hand through my brown locks, I sighed in frustration staring at the wall in front of me thoughtfully.

It has been 2 days since Brooklyn's accident. She didn't wake up yet but I did visit her every night at 1:30 am or so. The meeting was a secret, as her family didn't know who I was to Brooklyn or who I was in general. That introduction would be once we are officially together...

But, we still couldn't find out who was behind the accident. We as in, Ryder, and my friend Antonio's tracking team whose help I had asked for this purpose especially. I would help them find the person, but I didn't understand anything in depth about computers. I was good at torturing though. I was a mafia boss, after all.

I did have my assumptions about who could try to hurt Brooklyn, but I wasn't sure. I mean, if the Russians were the culprits how did they know she was someone dear to me. No one in my team knew about that except Ryder, and...

I immediately took my phone out and dialed Ryder,

"Bring Marco to the dungeons," I said and didn't wait for a reply as I hung up. I knew I had put a ton of burden on Ryder, but he gets paid a fairly good amount for it. Plus, he doesn't seem to mind. Even if he did, I don't give a fuck.

I knew Marco was the one deceiving me. Because he was always guarding the border and I had told him about Brooklyn. It just clicked. A gut instinct, if you will.

I stood up slipping on my coat and putting my gun in the waistband of my belt before leaving for the secret warehouse or dungeons. I really didn't know what it was.

--- I walked in the hallways of the warehouse giving a simple nod to everyone bowing and greeting me.

Just as I reached the dungeons I could hear the pleas of Marco. He was yelling as to why he was bought here.

I entered and smirked at him evilly, going into mafia mood super quick.

I motioned one of the guards to bring a chair and seated myself on it taking my gun out and putting it on the table beside me loving how fear seeped through Marco's eyes.

"How much did the fucking Russians pay you?" I asked him not beating around the bush and I could see he was shocked by how I knew about it, but quickly composed himself and acted as if he was confused. But I saw right through his facade.

"Answer me, Marco!" I roared because of the lack of response feeling all the anger I felt towards the ones who hurt Brooklyn from days ago resurface.

His eyes widened before he muttered lowly, "1 million."

"And just for money, you decided to defy me. Did your loyalty of years not make you hesitate?" I asked. I admit I felt a little hurt since he was one of the most loyal members. But my angry overcame it. He helped them hurt Brooklyn. That is something I won't tolerate ever.

He nodded his head hung low, and I growled again.

"Use your words, I can't hear your nods," I said not liking the disrespect.

"Yes, it did sir. I am sorry please give me another chance." He said, looking up and I saw tears filling his eyes.

"I do not give second chances, and you of all people know that best. Say goodbye to life, dear Marco." I said picking up my gun and pulling the trigger.

I aimed it at his head, as he made no movements just sat there accepting his fate. He defied me, I do not tolerate that especially not when Brooklyn is involved.

I pressed the trigger, feeling the shot echo as soon as it hit his head but no one flinched. This was a normal sight. Not defying me, but me killing.

I tucked my gun back in the gun holder before ordering some men to clean up. Hopefully, this would teach everyone what the consequences of defying me are.

I walked out of the warehouse and to my car knowing it was almost time to see Brooklyn. ---

I trailed my hand across her face, first her cheekbone, then her eyebrows and then on her blinking eyes.

Wait, what? I retracted my hand back in shock, only to see her open her eyes and rapidly cough. So it was real, she was really awake.

"Water." Her groggy voice barely muttered and I nodded, getting up and almost tripping while pouring water in a glass.

I helped her get up and sit on the bed, as she drank away like a thirsty man lost in a desert.

She handed me the glass back, and I kept it beside the jug on the side table beside her bed.

"How are you feeling?" I asked her.

"Like I got hit by a truck," She said wincing before continuing, "What are you doing here though?" She asked.

"Uhm.," I said, asking myself the same thing. What was I doing here? How was I supposed to answer her when I didn't know myself.

"Let me call the doctor," I said again, swiftly avoiding her question and taking fast steps out of the room. It wasn't the ICU room, they had shifted her in a normal room just yesterday.

After the doctor had checked up on her, he said she was fine and would be discharged by tomorrow morning after a few checkups to make sure she was completely healed.

He also said that the hospital authorities already called her family who said they were on their way to meet her. I knew I had to go before they came here, so I kissed Brooklyn's forehead to which she flushed bright red.

"I'll see you soon," I said with a seductive wink, and her blushed widened making me a very happy man. Even if it was for a few minutes.

Man, this girl was changing me, and I didn't know if I liked it or not.

--- Brooklyn.

I watched Diavolo's back, as he made his way out of the room disappearing out of my sight. I was still a light shade of red, because of his gestures.

I still didn't know why he was here. We were far from even acquaintances so what was the reason behind him visiting me in my vulnerable state. I didn't know, but I wanted to find out. He had avoided my question when I asked him, but I wasn't one to give up.

I looked at the door when I heard it rattle and then saw my mother's worried face and frantic feet rushing towards my side, I looked behind her shoulder to see my brother and uncle's following her.

I smiled at them tiredly, "Hey guys." I said.

She looked at me in shock before bursting into tears and sitting on the chair beside my bed, on which Diavolo was sitting just minutes ago. I cleared my throat to get rid of thoughts about him, instead focusing on the worried faces of my family.

"Oh my sweet child, I am so sorry." She said tears falling out of her dull eyes and I felt guilty for putting her in such a state. Even though, if I think rationally it was not my mistake.

"It's not your fault, mom. Please don't beat yourself over it. I am fine now, look. You have nothing to worry about." I said to her, taking her frail hand in mine and giving it a light squeeze. She looked at me motherly love written all over her face before she leaned and kissed my forehead tenderly, making me smile.

"Well, I am glad you are alright." My uncle suddenly said and I nodded my head in his direction.

"I am too, sister. I missed your annoying ass in the house." He said, making me let out a weak chuckle. As much as glad I was to see them, I was still in pain and they noticed it.

"You can rest for the night, Brook. We will come to meet you tomorrow. Take care." My mom said, ushering them out of the room and giving me one last kiss on the cheek before leaving herself.

Now that I was alone, I finally felt the tiredness take over my body. I was almost asleep but jolted awake when I heard a nurse come in holding a telephone in her hand. When she saw my jolt, she looked apologetic.

"I am sorry, ma'am. But there is someone who wants to talk to you. Says it's urgent." I looked at her confusion. As far as I know, my family just left. My only friend, Kiara lived abroad and probably didn't even know about my state. So who could be possibly wanting to talk to me?

I took the telephone from her, pressing it to my ear and she left clearly wanting to give me privacy.

"Hello?" I asked, unsure.

"Brooklyn." I heard the person say. And I knew the voice, all too well.

It must be the tiredness that made me utter it or maybe the fact that I didn't know what else to say. But I did, I said the word not thinking about the consequences it would cause after.

"Diavolo."
