Katherine's POV
I sat in my room staring at the peach before me. My stomach growled in anger by not having the peach inside it already, but I knew I should not eat it now. I still have a whole day ahead of me and this is the only food I have to eat. This was my punishment. This is what I get for being eight minutes late to bed. Demos wanted me to starve the entire day. No food and no water.
The punishment could have been worst. I could be tied up again and have no food for an entire week. Though of my last punishment cause a shiver to run down my spine.
KNOCK. KNOCK
I was pulled out of my thoughts by the sudden knocking at my door.
"Miss, it's me Bethany. May I come in."
"Come in!" I yelled from my bed. I watched as Bethany walk in with a basket of laundry under her arms.
"Morning, Katherine. Did you get back in time last night?" Bethany asked shutting the door behind her and then came over, taking a seat beside me.
I shook my head. "No. Demos was standing outside the room waiting for me. The man actually timed me Beth." I said turning my body on the bed towards her. "His punishment is to starve me the whole day for being 8 minutes late."
Bethany gave me remorseful look. "I'm sorry, Katherine. We should have been more careful."
I shook my head. "Yeah, its okay. I'm just glad he didn't go looking for me or we would have been in trouble." Bethany nodded her head in agreement. Her eyes then turned toward the night stand beside the bed where the peach sat. "Is that the same peach I gave you last night?"
I looked toward the peach and nodded. "Yeah, the same one. Its torture my stomach is growling and I am trying to save the peach for the right time to eat it."
"Why don't I get you some food?" Bethany said standing up.
"No, Bethany don't." I said standing up as well. "Demos will smell the food before you could set foot in my room. Besides its just one day. I think I can make it."
Bethany put a hand on my shoulder. "Don't worry, Katherine. You helped me out last time. Now it is my turn."
I smiled. "Okay, just get it for me later this afternoon. Demos has to tend to a meeting around that time anyway." I took a seat with Bethany following my actions. I grabbed the peach filling my mouth with its sweet juicy taste. "Thanks Beth."
"No problem."
After a few more bits I spoke again. "So, did Dallas talk to your aunt yet?"
Bethany sighed and lowered her head. "Yeah he did."
"Well, what did she say?" I asked taking another bit of the peach.
"She said that she did not want us to go through with the plan."
"What?"
"She said that it was too dangerous and we could get killed." Bethany exclaimed.
This is not good our plan cannot work if she cannot help us cut the tracker out. "Bethany, what are we going to do? She has more medical experience than us."
"I know. I also been thinking we need to get them out before the ceremony begins."
I gave her a confused look. "Wouldn't Demos know that something is wrong?"
Bethany shook her head. "You just need to get in Demos good grace. Don't go anywhere to far from your room. You have to let Demos know where you are at all times." Bethany explained.
I sighed and sat there in thought eating my peach as Bethany looked at me. The trackers need to be removed from us before the ceremony which is about eight days away. "Bethany I really hope this plan works. This may be our only shot at freedom. If this plan falls through we may never have a chance of escape again."
"Yeah, I know, but I trust my cousin. We can do it." Bethany reassured me.
We fell into a comfortable silence again as I finished what was left of my peach. "I wish I could bring my family. You know?" I said suddenly getting Bethany's attention again. "The problem is I am in the territory that used to be Washington, DC and they are in the area of what used to be Georgia. You already know the story behind my sister." I said as I thought back how they reshaped our country and others in there image. They changed our state names, major cities and even some buildings.
"Yeah, that's the sad part about this." Bethany agreed as she stood up taking the laundry basket under her arm. "Well, I have to get back to work." She then turned to make her way toward the door that's when the idea hit me.
"Bethany!"
Bethany stopped in her tracks turning to look at me. "What is it?"
I stood and walked over to her. "What if there is a way to find out where my family is?" Bethany raised an eyebrow at me wondering where I was going with this. "Demos must have data and information on who buys...people. So, he must have information on where the buyers currently are from."
Bethany put the basket down and crossed her arms over her chest. "That may be true, but where are you going to get the information from?"
"Demos office." I simply answered. "We just have to sneak in while he is in his meeting today."
Bethany eyes widen as she shook her head, no. "Katherine, are you crazy? We could get caught."
"Not if we are careful."
Bethany shook her head again. "Sorry, Katherine I can't risk getting caught."
I sighed. "Okay, just tell me where his office is. I'll do it myself."
"Katherin-"
"Look Beth, I am determined to find my family. Okay? I'm not going to let a lycan get in my way. What else do I have to lose?"
"Your life." Bethany simply answered.
"I doubt Demos will kill me."
"Yeah, but I know he will kill me." Bethany replied.
"Don't worry he wouldn't know you had any involvement. Just tell me how to get to his office."
.............
Demos walked into the room with that same emotionless expression on his face. It was not late in the afternoon and it was since this morning since I last saw him. I'm not complaining.
He took a seat beside where he again awkwardly embraced me in a hug that resulted in him nuzzling my neck once more. He then pulled away from me and looked me in the eyes.
"I have a meeting today." He plainly said. "Don't do anything stupid. I want you to stay in the room the whole time until I return. Is that understood?"
I sighed and answered like an obedient child to a parent. "Yes, Demos."
Demos nodded his head. "Good." Then he stood up and began to walk away until he stopped in his tracks. He turned back toward me. Demos looked at me for a moment almost in a longing way. Then the unexpected happened, Demos lips were connected to mine as he held my cheeks in his hands. My eyes widened by this. Although this is not the first time Demos has done this to me, but it still catches me off guard every time.
Demos pulled back from the kiss leaning his forehead against mine until he pulled away from me to look at me once more. His eyes were now a yellowish color something I never seen in Demos eyes before. "Katherine, I..." Demos started to say but stop. He looked conflicted about what he wanted to say. He let out a sigh as his eyes went back to normal gray. Demos then backed away from me and walked out my room not before looking back at me one last time and left.
That man has the strangest mood swings ever.
................
I sat in my room waiting patiently for the right moment to sneak into his office. I wanted to be sure that he did not come back for anything.
After about 30 minutes or so I made my move. Slowly opening the room door I looked left then right, surprisingly there were no guards in sight. When the coast was clear, I made my way down the hall toward the direction of Demos office with the instructions Bethany gave me in my mind. I couldn't really blame Bethany for backing out. If I were in her shoes I would be scared too. To be honest I'm a little nervous about this myself there is no telling what Demos would do to me if I get caught.
As I made my way down the hall I heard footsteps approaching and voices. My heart began to race in panic as I turned trying to find a hiding place. The only place I found was behind a rather large house plant. With no other I quickly dived behind the plant. The voices only grew a little bit louder as they neared the area I was in. I took a peak from behind the plant to see three men dressed as guards talking and laughing as they continued to walk passed me making their rounds.
I let out a sigh in relief as I then resumed my mission. After a few more set of stairs, hallways, and a few turns here and there I finally made it to his office. Yet, I had to hide due to the fact his office had a set of guards in front of it.. "Man, what am I going to do?" I mumbled to myself with my eyes still trained on the guards. Suddenly, I felt a hand latch on to my mouth stopping the scream that wanted to escape my mouth as an arm wrapped around my waist.
"Come down, Katherine. Its me Dallas." Dallas whispered in my ear. 'Dallas?' I thought in surprise. What is up with this man showing up out of no where and grabbing my mouth?
I felt Dallas release me then turned me towards. "Dallas, what are you doing here?" I whispered.
"Obviously to stop you from doing something stupid." He whispered back. "Bethany told me what you were doing."
"I don't see how that's any of your business." I whispered back. "There is nothing you can do to stop me. I need to find my family."
Dallas looked at me for a moment then back at the guards in front of Demos office. He seemed to be in thought. "Let me help you."
I gave him a skeptical look. "Why? You barely know me. And why do you keep catching me from behind?"
Dallas shrug. "I barely knew you and I still let you in on the escape plan."
I sighed. "Okay. Fine. How do you suggest we get rid of those guards?"
Dallas looked back at the guards then back at me. "I think I may have an idea."
