Jadwa

Its been a week since Sultan raised his voice at me,

We don't talk either, i just go in and do what I'm supposed to do and leave,

The only time we communicate is when i go to ask what he wanted to eat and thats it,

Even after the get together he still doesn't eat any food apart from the one i cook,

It was Saturday so i was rushing to get dressed and leave our chambers because it's almost 8 in the morning,

"Good morning Mami" I greeted her when i saw her coming out of Sultan's parlor

"Jadwa Yauwa welcome, i was about to send for you" she said holding my hand leading both of us inside

"Lafiya?" I asked her because she was looking so worried and somehow disorganized

"Ba Lafiya Jadwa Sultan is sick"

I was so surprised because when i left him yesterday he was okay,

"Subhanallah" i said "what happened?"

"Its his seizure, he was unconscious yesterday night he recovered this morning but he's having severe fever now"

She took a deep breath and continued,

"The doctor just left and he told him to try and eat something but he refused to eat anything" I waited for her to continue

"Can you prepare anything you think he will like please? He's on medication so he needs food" with that said i just nodded and went to the kitchen contemplating on what to cook for him,

He seems to like all the food I usually cook so I don't have a specific thing to cook,

After rounding the kitchen looking for what to make, I finally decided to make potato porridge with liver for him since it's fever,

I then made hibiscus tea for him and carefully took it to his room,

I gently placed the tray on the bedside table and hurried to greet the queen

"Good morning your highness" she then smiled "Jadwa sannu" she said still counting on the tasbih in her hand,

She looked like she slept here,

Sultan was laying helplessly on the bed with an iv cannula on his hand,

I stood for few seconds then I decided to leave and continue working,

I finished and didn't know what to do so I decided to go and check on Sultan,

"You can pack the dishes Jadwa" Mami said and i did,

He drank half of the tea and a little portion of the porridge,

I went back to ask what everyone else would like to eat because it was 12 already and no one took breakfast yet and it's almost lunch time,

"Salamualaikum" i said as I opened the door

I heard whispers of "wa'alaikumussalam" and I entered and knelt down on the carpet,

Mami was sitting on the carpet and Sultan's mum was on the bed side rubbing his hair,

"Sannun ku da zama" i said and they nodded

I asked and Mami said i can leave it because they will soon leave but the queen said that i can prepare anything edible,

I taught she would like varieties but by the looks of things she is not so calm,

"Jadwa" Mami called as she entered the kitchen

"Her highness is so worried about Sultan because it has been long since his last attack and she didn't get a glimpse of sleep since yesterday night" Mami said sitting on the chair by the kitchen counter

"I'm just trying to calm her down and let her go and get some sleep at least, please help me out too" she added and I stopped stirring the food and looked at her

"How Mami?" I asked and she nodded

"Prove to her that Sultan is in good hands and you can look after him for few hours before she comes back please" Mami pleads and i just nodded

I didn't know what to do but i will try, but why are they all acting as if he is a little child? I asked myself and just ignored it,

I saw the fright in the queens eyes, it is the fear of loosing a loved one and i know exactly how she feels,

I entered and packed the laundry and cleaned the room,

"May Allah prolong your life" Mami said sitting beside the queen

She whispered something in her ear and she nodded,

Then she placed her palm on Sultan's forehead and nodded,

"Jadwa" the queen called and I hurried and met her

"Please Don't leave him for even a second okay?" She said as she cupped both sides of my shoulders

"I will soon be back" then she stood up and was about to leave

"Here" she said handing me her Quran, just keep reciting it please

Then they left

I looked at him from head to toe, was he sleeping? I don't know, he was just there comfortably laying down

I sat on the tiles and continued reciting till i got tired so I gently dropped it on the bedside table and sat down watching him

I didn't even know when i slept off on the floor

I didn't know for how long I slept but i felt legs matching me so I hurried and woke up shouting,

Sultan shouted also before sitting back on the bed looking at his hand adjusting the tube before looking at me,

"What are you doing here?" I looked at him and then down,

"Her majesty said I should stay here till she's back" I answered him playing with the hem of my dress,

He didn't say anything which was still surprising because i cant remember the last time he poured his anger on me,

"I'm sorry" i said and continued

"How are you feeling now" I managed to asked stammering a little bit

"Better" he answered getting up and entering the bathroom,

Then he came back and laid on the bed,

"What can i get you?" I tried to ask him because he didn't eat anything apart from the little portion of porridge i made him,

He didn't say anything he just placed his palm on his forehead dropping his head down and covering his eyes,

Few moments later he replied,

"Oatmeal please"

I didn't know how to make it but thank God there's a cook book in the kitchen so i went ahead checked how to make it and made it for him,

Thank God he ate a-lot almost finishing the amount i gave him,

He finished and i gave him his drugs to take,

He looked so weak and I couldn't help but pity him,

He prayed and went back to sleep after,

It was already 8 and no one is back neither Mami nor the Queen,

I was scared of leaving and also scared of staying because it's almost time but I don't want to break my promise to her highness so i just stayed there,

"I think i will be sleeping on the cold parlor tiles today" i said to myself

I was about to leave his room and go to the parlor when i saw him shivering as if he was having a bad dream,

I didn't know what to do but whatever the dream is he was really struggling,

"Ummah...........Ummah...........Ummah" he started calling in a faint voice,

I quickly placed my head on his forehead and started reciting all the prayers i know and he started calming down,

I removed my hand and stayed there for some time before I decided to go and get something to eat because i was very hungry,

I was about to leave when he held my hand in his sleep,

My body vibrated and I gasped a little before looking at his soft hand gently holding mine,

I stayed there contemplating on what i was supposed do,

I tried getting loose from his grip gently but it didn't work so I quietly sat back down waiting for him to release me,

It's gonna be a long minute or hour 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️
