Have you ever felt like you are drowning in an invisible water,

Where everyone around you is perfectly breathing but you are struggling and no one is noticing,

Where you question the reason of your existence in this world,

Where you wish for death every chance you get but it's all in vain because God doesn't want to take you now?

Where you feel like your existence is worthless?

Well those were the same feelings eating me up when we arrived at the biggest palace i have ever seen , or the only palace Ive ever seen in my entire life.

We packed in a giant royal setting parking lot and we came down of the car

"Pick your bag" the woman called Adama said

I listened to her and carried my bag and we started walking to an ancient building, it was magestic to be honest its like 50 or 100 times bigger than our house,

Just after the parking lot is a very giant horse stalls with hundreds to thousands of horses and the horses care takers.

Royal guards were everywhere and anyone you see walking around is dressed in a specific type of uniform.

The door that caught my eyes was the Big Golden door standing taller than any other door you see around around.

"Ina yini" Adama said to a guy with a colored babban riga and I guessed he was a dogari

He just looked at her and said nothing

"Jakkadiya muke nema, na kawo yar aikin Yarima Sultan ne"

"Ladoo" the guard called

"Ka kaisu gefen bayi, ka kira jakkadiya tazo tayi baqi" he ordered the man he called lado

"An gama sarkin dogarai" he said and led us to a tiny door

It was an ancient hausa building with lots of room but to my surprise no one was inside,

He brought a mat and placed it beside a structure i think was a well,

"Ku zauna Jakkadiya tana nan zuwa gare ku" he said and left to summon her

After a few minutes an elderly aged woman entered, She was short and kind of fat i think she is in her late 50s, when she sighted us her frown turned into a lovely smile.

"Adamau" ziyara haka ba sanarwa

"Mami kenan,ke ai ba a ganin ki" she said shaking the elderly womans hand.

Then she turned and looked at me

"Wannan kyakyawar 'ya daga ina?" She asked coming closer to look at me

"Maganar da mukayi dake kwanaki ne da kika ce ana neman masu aiki a shiyan Yarima Sultan" she told her

"Ayyah, Amma a ina kika samo wannan" she asked her

"Wallahi marainiya ce,iyayen ta suka ce ta fito ta nemo kudin ciyar da su" she lied

I know that whatever i say now will not help me out so i just decided to keep quiet and embrace whatever comes at me

"Tohleave her here anjima zan kaita cikin palace gimbiya tayi making decision" she said to her

"Duk yanda mukayi zakiji daga gare ni" she added and Adama left us

" 'ya ta ya hanya" she asked picking my bag

"Alhamdulillah Aunty" i said because I didn't know the name to call her

"Aa Mami ne a nan not Aunty" she warned

"I didn't get your name" she said leading me to one of the rooms

"Jadwa" I answered her

She just smiled and we entered room

It was a very small room with a mat sitting in the middle,

Ga daki nan "kiyi sallah kiyi wanka kinji" she said to me

"I will come with a uniform for you later, we are going to the queens chamber after Asr prayer" she said and i just nodded and she left

I found a bathroom made out of sand just the way it was during the time of our great grand parents.

I took my bath and performed my ablution then i went back to the room and dressed before praying,

It was 2pm so I decided to take a nap before Mami comes back but I couldn't I just laid on the mat and kept thinking about how my life used to be before i lost my parents

I didn't even know time went so fast but i heard the wooden door opening and Mami came in with the cloth and handed it to me

It was a blue riga da zani and dan kwali I guess it was the uniform for palace maids so i wore it and followed her as we approached the big golden gate i saw when we came in.

Behind the golden door are two storey buildings each having its own personal golden door bigger than the first one,

We entered the door by the right and continued walking through several doors, Maids were everywhere with a different color of uniform it was same with mine bit it was brown and black,

We passed through a beautiful hall then entered a door which revealed an amazing parlor,



A woman was seated on the royal chair with people around her talking and laughing,

One look at her you will know she is the queen

She looked like she was in her early fifties, She was wearing a red gown with golden decorations and a black turban.

"Allah yaja zamanin gimbiya" Mami said kneeling down then I followed her lead

"Here is the new personal maid for Sultan" she said

The queen gave me an awkward smile and asked of my name,

"Jadwa" I replied her giving her a weak smile

"Jadwa" she repeated giving me a warm smile

"I think shes good" she said to Mami

"Lets try her out" she added

"Shikenan?" Mami asked her

She replied with a quick eh and Mami stood up and we left

"Let me put you through the rules dear Jadwa she said"

1- you wake up at exactly 6:30 everyday, there is an alarm in the maids section

2-the palace main gate opens at exactly 7 and all place maids are supposed to be in their chambers and no palace maid is allowed to leave the chamber till 10:00pm.

3- there is a kitchen in the prince section and there is a main kitchen down where his food is prepared

4-you will make his lemon tea without sugar in his sections kitchen and take it to his room at exactly 7:30am, drop it on a silver table near his bed and leave.

5-he leaves his room at 9 so you go in at that time to change his bedsheet and clean his room, "just his room" she added, there are other maids that takes care of the remaining portions

6-his breakfast is at 10:00am dot, so you will go to the table and serve him, do not ask him what to put on the plate, just put everything on the table in little portions

7-After serving him, go back to his room set his bathing water at exactly 40degrees, pick the empty cup of lemon tea and take it to the kitchen, by then he is done with breakfast,take the plates back to the kitchen and wash them

8-he eats lunch with his parents in their chamber so you dont have to worry about it

9-he eats dinner at 8:30pm so make sure you arrange the dining table before that time, the free time you get is to do his laundry and place them neatly in order and also help the other maids in the kitchen.

10-you eat breakfast with the other maids after he eats his breakfast

11-the food cooked here in the afternoon is for the maids only.

I was just looking at her stating all these strict rules

"How does he live like this" I thought

"Jadwa" Mami brought me back to from my taught

"Naam" I replied

I hope you understand she asked and i nodded then she started again

- Do not speak to him no matter what - Do not go into his room unless you're going for those things I listed -Do not sit when he's standing -Do not look into his eyes when he's talking -You listen and obey everything he says

She said and i nodded "I think that's it for now" she said getting up "You will know the other palace rules with time" she added.

We went into the chambers and everyone was wearing the exact type of my uniform but different combination,

"Dont be surprised Jadwa, you are the personal maid so you have to be easily identified" she said smiling

We went in and she showed me every inch of the palace so that i can know my way when I started

"You will start tomorrow morning" she said

We went down so that i can go back to the where i belong "the maids section"

"Amla zo nan" Mami called a girl passing by

"Na'am Mami" the Amal said

"Ga Jadwa nan please be nice to her" she said

We exchanged greetings and Mami left me alone with Amal

Amal carried a small cooler and we went back to the maids section, the room Mami kept me earlier was Amals room so i guess we're roommates now.

"How long have been here?" I asked Amal when we were eating the food she got for us

"3 years I guess" she said

"You will like it here as far as you follow the 5 golden rules which i guess Mami already told you" she said smiling

"What about those other 11 rules?" I asked her

"Ohh thats just for you the personal maid" she replied me

"What happened to the other personal maids" i asked her wondering

"Oh they broke the rules" she said going out to bring water for me

"Here" she said handing me the cup of water

"Don't worry Jadwa, i have a feeling you're here to stay" she said giving me a warm smile and I returned the favor

"Lets sleep okay, its gonna be a long day tomorrow" she said and i nodded and drifted off to sleep
