Dorothy's POV
My eyes open the moment I hear Liam's cough. He's walking up finally. I thought he would never open his little eyes again.
"Mommy?" He calls out sounding so broken.
"Baby, I'm right here," I say gently trying my best not to cry. "Everything is going to be okay."
"I can't move my hands, mommy." I see him struggling to move his hands from the rope. "It's too tight."
"Liam, calm down." I try to calm him down from this panic mode. "I need you to free hands from the rope."
He looks up at me with tears in his eyes. "I can't do it."
"Yes, you can Liam," I say looking him in the eye. "Your hands are small enough to pass through it."
He nods and tries to get his hand to pass through the rope. I could see he was annoyed as he struggled. I've never asked him to do anything that he is not capable of doing. Sometimes you just have to give him a little push to get him to do what you want him to do. I know he can do this. The rope isn't too tight.
After a few minutes of this, he manages to get one hand free from the rope. It was red and a bit swollen but free. He pulled out his second arm and smiled at his achievement.
"You did it." I cheered beaming at him. "I knew you could do it."
"I did it!" He laughed looking at his hands running to hug me.
"Liam we need to talk quietly," I whisper to him. "The mean people might hear us."
"Sorry." He giggled quietly zipping his lips.
"Remember when daddy taught you how to untie a knot?" I asked him as he climb down from my lap.
I'm so grateful for that lesson. I thought it was pointless to teach four years old how to untie a knotted rope but Ethan insisted that he learned how. If I knew he was involved in this world I would have learnt how to do it too and maybe learn little self-defense.
"Yes?" He said tilting his head quizzically trying to figure out where I'm heading to.
"I need you to help me untie this knot. Can you do that for me?"
"I can try." He walked behind the chair where my hands were held by a rope.
I felt his little finger brush my hand as he attempted to free my hands. I remember the determined look on his face when Ethan he tried to get Luca free from the rope his father knotted. I remember him throwing a tantrum because he couldn't do it. I remember Ethan whispering something into his ear making him smile. I remember him freeing Luca.
I felt the ropes loosen as he tugged on it forcefully. I don't know what he did or how he did it but he did it. He peeled the ropes off my skin with ease after that.
I'm not surprised if he was able to pick a lock at this age.
"I did it, mommy." He smiled jumping back on me. "I did it!"
I wince once his body landed on mine. On a normal day, I wouldn't feel much pain but since I'm carrying a life inside me and I haven't eaten in hours, I guess I'm not as strong.
"Are you okay mommy?" He furrowed eyebrows in worry.
"I'm fine." I smile gently holding him close to me. I knew he wasn't buying any of it but he didn't ask any more questions. "Let's get out of here, yeah?
He grinned and jumped off me, trying to help me stand up too. I held his hand and we both walked to the door. I knew Igor locked it when he went out; I heard it. I pull on the handle in case I was wrong but it didn't budge.
"It's locked," Liam whispered to me.
"Yeah." I bent down to the handle pulling out a pin from my hair. I learnt how to pick locks back when I was in college. My dormmate kept losing her keys and eventually lost mine too. I had to learn cause I got tired of getting locked out.
It only takes me a minute to get the door open. I turn to see Liam looking at me with awe. I smile and ruffle his hair which made him slap my hand away. I roll my eyes and stand up straight.
"We need to be very careful and quiet. These people are meaner than monsters and we can't let them see us." I warn him.
"Is this a game?" He asked jumping excited at whatever we are going to face outside the door.
"Yes, but we can't afford to lose. There is no second try."
"Okay. We can beat these stupid monsters." He said looking determined.
"Yes, we can." I kiss his forehead. "I need you to promise me something. I need you to promise me you'll keep on running if anything happens to me. You'll get out of this place."
"We would win this game together." He smiled at me. "Just like other games."
"Promise me, Liam." I pulled him into a hug as tears rushed down my face. "Promise you'll never stop moving forward that you'll never stop drawing, that you'll never stop being yourself."
"I promise." He said hugging me tighter. "I promise promise."
"Let's go." I open the door and Liam walks out of the room. I pull him close to me closing the door gently behind me.
The corridors are empty and I find that's quite odd. Maybe they are all doing something together. I don't know anything about mafias and gangs but if I had a prisoner I would never take my eyes of them.
I hold Liam's hand and scurry down the corridor. We make it to the stairs that lead us out of this basement. I see a gun on top of a barrel and take it putting it in my pocket. I hope I don't get to use it though.
We get to a wooden door a few meters away from the stairs. I place Liam behind me and open the door quietly. I see a leg and take the gun out of my pocket. I look back at Liam whose staring at me with wide eyes waiting for my next move.
I kick the person's leg making him groan and use the gun to hit him on the jaw. The moment he loses his balance and places his hand on his jaw I kick him in the sun don't shine hard enough to get him to the ground. I quickly pick up Liam and make a run for it before he gets up.
I am never going to do that again in my life. At least not while pregnant in front of a four years old boy.
"Come back here you bitch!" He shouts getting up. I turn and see him on his phone. "She fucking escaped! I need back up!"
I felt my heart pick up the pace when I heard his footsteps coming getting louder. I ran as fast as my two weary legs could. I'm carrying two lives, I should be rewarded after this. It didn't take long for me to lose the guard.
The hallway leads to a dual grand staircase. I didn't realize this place was this lavish until now. The wallpaper looks like it cost more than my entire apartment and the carpet was so soft it felt like I was stepping on mush. It didn't look like much though, it was wine in color no dirt mark on it at all.
I saw a few men running up the stairs with rifles in their hands coming towards us. I didn't know what to do so I panicked. I stepped into the room with the pretty-looking door nearby.
First of all, I let the beauty of the room sink in then I try to figure out exactly where we are. It didn't take long for me to realize that it was an office. Probably Igor's, it has almost everything in Ethan's office I won't lie but this place is pretty expensive.
"It's so shiny," Liam whispered looking at a necklace in a glass case not so far from where we were standing.
"Yeah," I agree and walk closer to the glass case. It has something written in Russian so I couldn't make out what it said. "very shiny."
"Do you think daddy will find us?" Liam asked the moment I dropped him on the floor.
"I know your daddy's going to come to get us," I whisper stretching my muscles before pulling him into a hug. "But even if he doesn't find us we have to stay strong."
I don't know how long it would take for those pesky men to realize we are in this room so I take Liam and we both hide under the table until I'm certain that the coast is clear.
"Are we playing hide and seek?" Liam whispers crawling closer to me.
"Something like that." I wrap my arm around him holding him close.
I thought he would guess that something is wrong but he's too innocent to figure out what's going on. He's just four years old and doesn't need this in his life.
"Who are we hiding from mommy?" He asked looking up at me with his grey eyes.
"The-"
Before I could finish my sentence I heard the door creak open and a thick Russian accent follow after it.
"Kak im udalos sbezhat?" (how did they manage to escape?)
