It's been a couple weeks since Lamar got Amiyah's number and other than talking when they see each other in the neighborhood, they have been talking on the phone from time to time. They also planned a day for them to go out for lunch which is today. Unfortunately, it's was on Saturday and that's usually when Bianca and Amiyah go out for lunch, but Bianca let it slide just this once.
Lamar pulled the chair out for Amiyah.
"Thank you", Amiyah said.
"Gentlemen? Check", she thought to herself
Lamar sat across from her. "You said you've been here before right?", he asked.
"Yea, Bianca and I have been like almost to every restaurant in this city. We usually go to lunch every Saturday", Amiyah said.
"Except for this one. Sorry", he said.
"No, no. She was fine with it", Amiyah said.
"Maybe our next date would be dinner", he said. "If you even considered this the first one, or if you considered this a date at all. Did you even look at me in that type of way?"
Amiyah chuckles.
"Awkward like me? Check", Amiyah thought to herself.
"Listen, Lamar at this point we are talking and getting to know each other. And I mean really getting to know each other because I don't wanna start a relationship with you and things end bad and we live right across the street from each other and that would be awkward. So I just want things to be good for the both of us. Give each other a chance to see what we're all about then we can go from there. And hopefully we go somewhere because I do think that you are cute", she said.
Lamar smirked.
"But, do I consider this a date? Yes", she said. "Just like you say any gift is special, because somebody decided to give you something. Well a date can be anything, because somebody decided to get you out the house and have some quality time"
Lamar nods. "I love that", he said. "I thought you being a lawyer and all, that you would like all the fancy stuff"
"That would be Bianca", Amiyah said. "I mean I do too, but I don't expect a guy to show me the world when I'm just starting to talk to them. Besides, sometimes the gifts can blind a person and they don't look at the person who is giving those gift for who they. Just what they give"
Lamar nods. "We need more women like you in this generation", he said. "Not materialistic"
"Hey, if I'm going to pick a guy to be with I'll take personality and values over money and gifts everyday. Not saying that a man with some money and gifts isn't I want, but you know what I mean", she said.
"100 percent", Lamar said.
A girl comes up to the table with their menus. "Sorry about that", she said. "Your waitress will be with you shortly"
Amiyah nods.
The girl walks away.
"So, any exciting crime scenes?", Amiyah asked.
"Couple of robberies, a few shootouts, same ole same ole", he said.
"Did you work on that robbery where the old lady at the gas station got shot at?", Amiyah asked.
Lamar nods.
"That just broke my heart and for a little bit of money too", she said.
"Exactly", Lamar said.
The waitress walked over and took their order and then left.
"So, any exciting cases?', Lamar asked.
"Exciting? More like stressful", Amiyah said. "They're giving me the hard ones. Ones I would think that the more experienced lawyers would have"
"Maybe they know you'd handle it", Lamar said.
"Maybe", Amiyah said. "..It's not always about winning for me. I'm just nervous that it'll be that one person that I can't help and that goes away from something that they didn't even commit"
"It's good that you're doing it for a good cause and not just a check", Lamar said. "What made you want to be a lawyer?"
Amiyah looked down. "When I was 12, I moved in with my aunt and uncle because my dad went to jail for something that he didn't even do. He was just a black man at the wrong place at the wrong time. So, not only am I trying to work on a case with enough evidence to get him out, I have these other cases that I have to do as well", Amiyah said.
"I'm not trying to say anything negative, but how do you know he didn't commit whatever crime it was?", Lamar asked.
"Because, I was there", Amiyah said as she looked up at him
Lamar nods. "...well sometimes it's hard or you feel stressful when doing things alone. Things could get done faster and more smoother when you work as a team", he said. "Meaning I am willing to help, if you want to be helped"
Amiyah smiled a little. "You dont have to. I'm sure you have better things to do", she said.
"Hey, I'm just like you. I wanna make sure the bad guys go away and the good guys get justice", he said. "When the time comes for me to have kids, I dont want them in a world that isn't safe"
"Sounds like you should be a cop", she said.
"I'm more of a nerd", he said.
Amiyah chuckled.
Lamar and Amiyah just looked at each for a moment. They began to feel connection between each other.
The waitress comes up with their food.
"I got your salad", she said as she put the salad down in front of Amiyah. "And your burger", she said as she put the plate in front of Lamar.
"This burger is huge", Lamar said.
The waitress smiled. "yes and a customer favorite", she said.
"I'll be the judge of that", Lamar said.
Amiyah chuckled.
"Can I get you guys something else?", she asked.
"I think we're good", Amiyah said.
The waitress nods. "Enjoy", she said before walking away.
Amiyah and Lamar continued eating and talking as they finished their date. Lamar drove them both home and their got out the car.
"I really enjoyed myself", Amiyah said.
"I did too", he replied.
"And to answer your question, I would love to go out for dinner on our second date", Amiyah said.
Lamar smiled. "I am glad to hear that", he said.
Amiyah smiled. "Text you later?", she asked.
Lamar nods.
"Alright", she said. "Bye"
"Bye", he replied.
Amiyah walked to her house and Lamar to walked his. He looked back at her once then forward again as he started thinking about how much he admired her so far. Her smile, her laugh, her personalty, her ambitions, everything about her was perfect to him. So, perfect that he wanted to make her his even more.
Amiyah got into the house and she called Bianca as she sat on the couch.
"Hello", Bianca said said after answering the phone.
"Hey", Amiyah said.
"I hope the date was good being that I couldn't go to my favorite restaurant today", Bianca said.
"It was better than expected. He was.. almost perfect", Amiyah said.
"Almost?", Bianca asked.
"Girl, you know when something is too good to be true, it usually is", Amiyah said.
"True, but like you told me. Dont worry about that. Just enjoy time and whatever happens, happens", she replied.
"Yea, I'm always right aren't I", Amiyah said jokingly.
Bianca chuckled. "Yes, for the most part. But I am glad the date went good", she said. "Tell me all about it tonight. Right now I have to watch my niece", she said.
"Good luck with that", Amiyah said.
"Yea. She is a proud reminder on why I dont want kids yet", Bianca said.
Amiyah chuckled. "Bye", she said.
"Bye", Bianca replied.
Amiyah hung up the phone and got up and opened the blinds to let some sunlight in before she started looking at her cases.
