Five months later, it was November and it was thanksgiving.

"Do you like this shirt", Lamar asked.

Amiyah was sitting on his bed looking at one of the books from his bookshelf. She looked up at him after he asked the question.

"Lamar for the fourth time, I like it. I liked the first one you had on, the second and the third", Amiyah said. "You are nervous for nothing"

"I'm meeting your family", Lamar said.

"Yes, but they are welcoming people so it's nothing to worry about", Amiyah said. "My aunt is the coolest, trust me"

"...what about your dad?", he asked.

"He's in jail Lamar. He won't be there", Amiyah said.

"I know, I mean like when will I meet him", Lamar asked. "Are you not talking to him still?"

"Yes. Every now and then", Amiyah said.

"I still don't think you should teach him that way", Lamar said.

"He lied about my mother", Amiyah said. "He was selfish. Yes, I still talk to him because I love him and he's my dad and I don't have the heart to ignore him, but he lied to me"

"Yet, you still haven't even talked to your mom", Lamar said.

"...because another part of feels like he was lying for her", Amiyah said. "She's out here and he's in there so he probably feels like it was the best idea to do"

Lamar didn't say anything. He just put his watch on.

"...you can meet him when he tells me the truth or when I feel like he deserves to have some say so in my life", Amiyah said.

"Or maybe you're just using excuses", Lamar said.

"No I'm not", Amiyah said.

Lamar sat down next to her to put his shoes on.

"I get your nervous and what know but don't sit here and think that I'm hiding you. I wouldn't be introducing you to my aunt, uncle, cousins and grandmother", Amiyah said.

"Amiyah, I'm done with the conversation", Lamar said as he stood up.

Amiyah got quiet as she looked at him.

"Let's go to your family's house first then we're stop by my parents' house", Lamar said. "Come on"

Lamar walked out the room and Amiyah got up from the bed and put the book back on the bookshelf. They left and arrived to her aunt's house.

Amiyah has a key so she unlocked the door herself and walked in with Lamar. Her aunt was going out of the kitchen because she heard Amiyah opening the door.

"Hey, Auntie", Amiyah said.

"Hey, babydoll", her aunt said as she walked to her and hugged her tight. "You went ghost on me"

Amiyah pulled away and looked at her. "I've been calling", Amiyah said.

Her aunt smiled. "Yea I know but it's good to see you too", she said.

"Sorry", Amiyah said.

"It's okay. I know you're busy miss lawyer", her aunt said before looking at Lamar. "And who's this?"

"Auntie, this is Lamar, my boyfriend. Lamar, this is my aunt", Amiyah said.

"Nice to meet you", Lamar said with his hand out.

"Nice to meet you too", her aunt said as she shook his hand.

Everybody else was in the backyard hanging out.

Her aunt looked at Amiyah. "Amiyah, sweetheart can I talk to you for a-"

Suddenly, once of Amiyah's cousins, Kallie, came into the house. Kallie, had a light brown skinned complexion. Her hair was slayed with a water wave lace front. She had on a yellow fitted dress with a black cardigan and some all black converses.

"Amiyah!!", Kallie said as she ran over.

Amiyah's aunt rolled her eyes. "Girl, we have a guest. Act like your got some sense", Amiyah's aunt said.

Kallie looked at Lamar then at Amiyah. "And that isn't Dominic", Kallie said .

Amiyah's eyes got wide for a second. "Why would that be Dominic. I never dated him", Amiyah said.

Lamar shook his head and looked to the side as he clenched his jaw then he looked back at Amiyah and Kallie.

"I don't know. I just thought that-"

Amiyah's aunt cut Kallie off. "Girl, just shut up", Amiyah's aunt said.

"Thank you mom", Kallie said as she looked down in embarrassment. "Sorry, Amiyah. I'm going back outside"

"Yea", Amiyah said agreeing that she should go back outside.

Kallie leaned into Amiyah and whispered, "he cute girl. Good job"

Amiyah chuckled and shook her head.

Kallie walked outside.

Amiyah looked at Lamar, who was looking at her then she looked at her Aunt.

"Did you want to tell me something?", Amiyah asked.

Her aunt sighed. "Your dad told me about your mom", she said.

"Okay?", Amiyah said.

"And she came by and-"

Amiyah cut her off. "I'm sorry auntie, but I hope that she isn't here", Amiyah said.

"She is and I think that you should talk to her", he aunt said.

"You don't understand. I was last to her. My dad...he always made me first priority but she didn't", Amiyah said.

"Amiyah, if somebody is willing to make things right, I think that they deserve a second chance", her aunt said.

"So dad didn't keep me away from her?", Amiyah asked.

"Who told you that?", her aunt asked.

Amiyah shook her head and mumbled. "I knew he was lying".

"She's here so will you just please-"

Suddenly, they heard the back door open again so her aunt stopped talking and turned around. He was Amiyah mom.

Amiyah looked at her mom.

"...I'll let you two talk", her aunt said. "I have to check on the food"

Her aunt walked into the kitchen.

"My baby...", her mom said as she walked to her. "You've grown so much"

Amiyah didn't say anything.

Her mom looked at Lamar. "And who is this? Boyfriend? Fiancé? Husband?", she asked.

"Lamar, can we have a minute?", Amiyah asked.

Lamar nods and walks to the backyard.

"Enough of acting like things are normal because it's not. Why did you wait so long?", Amiyah asked.

Her mom sighed. "I messed up, Amiyah. I know I missed up and I am so sorry. You don't have to forgive me for abandoning you the way I did and I don't expect you to just up and do that. I just want have the opportunity to build that relationship that wasn't built when it should've been. I know I don't deserve the title "mother" but...I just want you to be my daughter. I've been wanting to talk to you but you were doing so good with yourself and I didn't want to add any problems"

"But yet, you're adding them now", Amiyah said.

Her mom was quiet.

"But I am glad you did what you did, because I know everything on what not to do to my children when that time comes and the first rule is to not abandoned them", Amiyah said. "When I feel like I should talk to you, I will. Until then, stay out my life. It's thanksgiving. Be with your family because I am surely not one with them"

Her mom looked down and then looked at Amiyah. "Okay", her mom said. "Fine"

Amiyah folded her arms.

"I love you Amiyah. I always have", her mom said.

Amiyah looked away and rolled her eyes.

Her mom walked out the front door and left.

Amiyah looked down as a tear rolled down her cheek then she wiped it and walked outside.

Her grandmother and cousins were surrounding Lamar.

"What are your intentions with my cousin?",Kallie asked.

"What do you do for a living", her grandmother asked.

"Any felonies?", her cousin, Unique, asked. "You know she's a lawyer right?"

Amiyah walked over.

"I really hope you guys aren't interrogated him", Amiyah said.

"We just wanna see where his head is at", Kallie said.

"And child, let me tell you. You know how to pick em", Unique said.

"You ain't lying about that", her grandmother said.

Amiyah chuckled and shook her head. "Well, I'm going to steal him for a moment", Amiyah said.

Lamar stood up. "It was nice meeting you all though", Lamar said.

"Same to you, baby", Amiyah's grandmother said.

Amiyah walked Lamar away. "I could tell you were getting a little nervous", Amiyah said

"Thank you", Lamar said.

"Of course", Amiyah said. "But since you've met everybody that I care for you to meet, you ready to go to your parents' house?"

"I think we should stay a little longer though. I don't wanna seem...rude", Lamar said. "Besides, I'm not in the rush to get to my parents' house"

Amiyah nods. "Okay", Amiyah said. "Well hopefully my uncle will be better. Come on"

Amiyah and Lamar stayed there for an hour longer and then they left to go to his parents' house. When they got there it was his mom, dad, brother, his brother's wife and their kids. Lamar didn't really have a boy family and the others that he did have lived in another state. They were currently eating at the table.

"So Amiyah I heard you were a lawyer. You go girl", his mom said.

Amiyah smiled. "Thank you", Amiyah said.

"Yea I'm surprised, Lamar even snatched you up", his dad said.

"Um...", Amiyah looked at Lamar and she could tell that he wasn't pleased with what his dad said. Amiyah then looked back at his dad. "I've known him since high school. We were friends...he actually moved in across the street from me and it was history from there"

His dad nodded.

"So mom, how is your store going?", Lamar asked.

"It's going great, sweetheart", his mom replied. "How is work for you?"

"What are you doing again son? Police officer?", he asked.

"Forensic scientist, dad", Lamar said.

Daren shook his head because he knew were this was headed.

"Why did you wanna do that again? I mean like you couldn't been a doctor, like your brother. Or even a lawyer like your friend here", his dad said.

"Because that's wanted to be dad", Lamar said.

"Guy, please", Lamar's mom said.

"I'm sorry, I didn't want some big time fancy job like you", Lamar said. "Sorry, I was never what you wanted me to be like"

"Here we go", Daren mumbled.

"What are you talking about", his dad asked.

"Don't act like that. You been doing this since were kids!", Lamar said.

Amiyah touched and rubbed his leg under the table.

Lamar felt her and tried to calm himself down.

"Son, you really need to get it together", his dad said.

"Honey, stop", his mom said. "He's right. You have always done that to him. You have always treated him like he was step child"

His dad looked at Lamar's mom and Lamar's mom looked away and got quiet. He continued to look at her for a moment then looked at Lamar.

"I don't even know why I came here", Lamar said.

"I was wondering the same, since you ran all the way to D.C.", his dad said.

"Okay", Lamar said. "Mom, the food is good, but I gotta go"

His mom nodded. "Call me", she said.

Lamar got up. "Come on Amiyah", he said. "Bye mom, Daren, and Paula"

"It was nice meeting you guys", Amiyah said as she got up and looked at Daren and Paula. "And it was nice seeing you guys again"

They said their goodbyes to Amiyah and her and Lamar went outside and began walking to the car. Lamar opened the passenger door for Amiyah.

"You didn't tell me that you and your dad didn't have an okay relationship", Amiyah said.

"Because I didn't wanna talk about it", Lamar said.

"What about now?", Amiyah said.

"Amiyah, if I didn't want to talk about it before I don't wanna talk about it now!", he shouted.

Amiyah looked down and then got in the car. She didn't make eye contact with him after he Yelled at her.

Lamar sighed once he saw her emotion change. "Like my mom said, I was the step child while my brother got all the glory. I was always punished while he was always rewarded. No matter what he did", Lamar said.

Amiyah looked at him.

"That's it", Lamar said.

"Im sorry you had to go through that", Amiyah said.

"Yea, I'm fine. I'm alright", Lamar said. "I just wanna change the conversation...it's better for the both of us"

Amiyah nods.

Lamar shut the door and walked to the driver's side and drove off.
