A/N First of two updates today.
If Jacob didn't still have hold of his arm, sending sparks through his body, Raephier would have been positive he was dreaming. Dreams, afterall, never made much sense. They always seemed to jump from one scenario to another without rhyme or reason, leaving you not quite sure how to recount the bizarre chain of events to uninterested listeners the following morning.
"Can you do it?" Jacob asked, pulling Raephier's attention away from the ever increasing chaos and onto Jacob's request.
Could he do it? Could he sing?
"Please?" Jacob added and the pleading in his eyes made Raephier want to curl up into a ball in the hope that it was actually a dream.
"I want to help," he said to Jacob, "I'm just not sure how."
A flash of uncertainty flickered across Jacob's features.
"But you've done it before, haven't you?"
"Yes, but only once," Raephier said, looking around nervously.
"Captain!" came a shout from across the deck and Raephier and Jacob turned to see Lyle and Tyler being tied up by a couple of pirates.
"Damn it!" Jacob exclaimed loudly, making Raephier flinch.
"I'll do it! I'll do it!" Raephier said quickly, wanting this to be over as soon as possible.
Jacob gave him a big beaming smile.
"But what about your men?" Raephier asked. There was no way he could sing with Jacob's men here.
"All of them have their ears plugged," Jacob said with a grin. "They won't hear a thing."
"Oh, right, that's good," Raephier said, suddenly feeling a little easier. But then another thought struck him.
"But what about you?"
"Here, look," Jacob said, producing something from his pocket. "I'll put these in as soon as you're ready."
"Right," Raephier said again, still feeling like he was having some sort of out of body experience. "So who do I sing to?"
"I'll leave that up to you," Jacob said. "I need to go before..."
And he didn't get any further than that before two pirates grabbed hold of Raephier and started dragging him backwards.
"Hey get off me!" he shouted at the two brutish men who had vice-like grips on his arms.
"You're going back in your cage," one of them grumbled, "boss's orders."
"Raephier! Do it!" Jacob shouted.
Raephier craned his neck to see Jacob and watched helplessly as Jacob was crashed into by a bald headed pirate which sent the two small plugs in his hand flying across the deck.
"Jacob!" Raephier shouted in desperation.
"DO IT!" Jacob shouted again, while wrestling with the bald man on top of him.
Fortunately the pirate's sword was still in his belt and he was having trouble getting it out seen as his hands were busy trying to keep Jacob pinned.
"I CAN'T" Raephier shouted back. There was no way he could sing now. It would mean certain death for Jacob. If he thought the pirates were bloodthirsty now, he could only imagine what they would be like when affected by his song. And Jacob had no weapons, and the only other members of his crew on the ship were tied up, unable to help.
"YOU CAN! PLEASE RAEPHIER! PLEASE DO IT FOR ME?!"
Raephier looked around him. The pirates were bringing more weapons out of the hold. He saw one loading up a pistol. There were another two preparing to swing across onto Jacob's ship. On Jacob's ship he could see the outline of two men locked in a sword fight.
Raephier felt tears trickle down his cheeks.
"I can't" he croaked, much too quietly for Jacob to hear. How could he kill the man he loved? But then how could he just stand here and do nothing while he watched the man he loved die, as well as the rest of the crew? No matter which way he looked at it, Raephier knew that whatever decision he made, he was going to struggle to live with it.
Despite his best attempts to grip onto anything he could to slow down the progress of his captors, Raephier was getting dragged closer and closer to the door that would take him back to his cell.
"I love you," he whispered towards Jacob, the tears now streaming down his face.
There was a crash to Raephier's left and he turned to see James and Doug land on Jinx's ship, with swords in their hands.
One of the pirates pulling at Raephier immediately let go to stop the intruders, and Raephier quickly dug his heels in to stop the remaining guy, who thankfully wasn't very blessed in the muscle department, from dragging him any further.
"Jacob! Go help Jacob!" Raephier shouted at Doug and James, then quickly realised they wouldn't be able to hear him. James was already in a fight with the pirate who'd been holding onto him, but thankfully Doug scanned his surroundings and quickly noticed Jacob's predicament. He ran over, and joined in the fight, enabling Jacob to finally stand on his feet.
As soon as he was free he ran over to Raephier.
"Come any closer and I'll take his head off," the pirate holding Raephier said, and Raephier suddenly felt the cold press of metal to his throat.
Jacob skidded to a halt just a few meters away.
"Please Raephier!" Jacob pleaded. "You can do it, I know you can, please?"
A strangled cry came from the left and on instinct Raephier's eyes turned to the noise to see blood pouring down James's face, a deep laceration running down his left cheek.
Raephier snatched his gaze away and back to Jacob, his heart beating so hard he was scared he was going to throw up.
Jacob gave him a weak pleading smile.
"I'm scared," Raephier whispered.
He felt the blade prick at the skin on his neck, making him draw in a breath.
"I'll do it!" the pirate growled. "Try anything and your head will be rolling round the deck!"
Jacob glanced around furtively, then returned back to Raephier.
Then suddenly his face was calm. And he smiled. A real smile. Like it was just the two of them back in his cabin.
"Sing to me Raephier," he said. "Sing to me."
"W-what?" Raephier stammered, feeling his anxiety reach a new high. "I can't do that, you'll die."
"No I won't," Jacob said, still looking as calm as he'd ever seen him. "My body might be, but I'll be alive in you, and I'm ok with that."
"B-but.....I just-"
"Yes you can," Jacob said, taking a small step closer.
Raephier gasped as he felt the pirate hold him tighter.
"Look at me Raephier!" Jacob demanded, in a way that Raephier couldn't refuse. "You are the bravest and most extraordinary person I have ever had the privilege of knowing, and it would be an honour to let you take my soul and keep it safe."
Raephier could barely see Jacob, he was crying that much.
"I love you," he said, his whole body now shaking.
Through his tears he was sure he saw Jacob smile.
"I love-"
There was a blur of movement in front of him, then Jacob was no longer there. He blinked rapidly to clear the tears and saw Jacob pinned to the deck, his hands wrapped around the wrist of Bones who was trying to point a pistol at Jacob's head.
"You lied, you filthy piece of shit!" Bones growled at Jacob. "And you're going to pay for that with a bullet through your skull!"
"Noooooo!!!!!" Raephier shouted, and then he felt it. The tingles flowing round his body, like an electric current.
He looked at Jacob, then he looked at Bones. One filled his heart with love, the other with hatred. Both were strong enough emotions to make him sing. But Jacob wouldn't stand a chance against a man with a pistol. Would he?
Then Bones, in a display of shear strength, lifted Jacob up off the deck with a growl and hurled him crashing into the side of the ship, the sound of splintering wood making Raephier flinch.
Jacob, looking dazed, pulled himself out from the broken bits of wood, and hobbled unsteadily onto his feet.
Bones, who was now standing about 6 yards away, held the pistol out in front of him, pointed straight at Jacob.
"Time to die, you lying bastard."
Raephier's head whipped round to look at Jacob, feeling the energy rise like a tsunami inside.
"NOOOOOO!!" Raephier cried.
Jacob's head swung round to face Raephier and their eyes locked. And in that instant Raephier had never been more certain of what he had to do.
He looked into Jacob's beautiful eyes and he sang.
