I could hear the sound of footsteps getting closer as I hid the throwing knife. The dress was uncomfortable when I wore it, but now it turned out to be useful.
I turned around to see three knives stuck on the wall like glue. They must be assassins by profession to have access to such high-quality stuff. Just by looking at it, I could say that it was sharp enough to cut through wood like butter.
Anyway, back to the present I need to look 'scared'. Like 'scared' scared. I needed to look like I had just looked death in the face, which I actually did.
However, my reflection in the window looked more annoyed and pissed rather than scared.
I looked around to find something that could alleviate my appearance. Right then, I spotted a vase with a bunch of flowers on the side table.
I took out the flowers and sprinkled the water inside the vase on myself to make it look like I was sweating. And a little water near my eyes to look like I cried from being scared.
I put away the vase and slid down right below the wall where the knives were showcased.
'Now deep take breaths and look panicked'
"Madam, are you alright?" asked Head Knight Luther who was the first one to find me.
Luther was dressed in formal wear embodied with the emblem of the Dukedom of Frost, a majestic Silver wolf. He was as big as a bear.
Now I miss my baby, Chirpy. I wonder what he is up to without me.
Luther paused for a moment when he saw me and started scouting the place. He said something under his breath when he saw all the knives above my head. Though it was too low for me to hear, I could guess what he was saying.
He was cursing. Not only was his master he served in a coma under life-threatening circumstances but now the mistress of the house was also getting targeted. And they were doing a bad job preventing it.
'You're not the only one pal'
I heard more footsteps headed our way. And soon we were surrounded by a group of knights.
"Ther...There..I...I..."
I pointed at the trees with shaky hands. I wrapped my arms around myself and shielded my face between my knees.
"You..." Luther ordered his second in command.
"Lockdown this place. Nobody's getting out till the intruder is caught"
An alarm was rung loud enough to alert the entire estate and the place went into lockdown. I sat and watched as more and more people started to surround me.
"Madam!" Lynn came running towards me. She looked worried at seeing my state. She kneeled beside me and placed her hand on top of mine.
"Lynn. Escort the madam to her room" the head knight ordered her with his face turning grimmer by the second.
And that was how convincing my act was. Maybe I can even make a career out of it.
"Let me help you up" Lynn said with a face full of nervousness.
I stood up with her help and walked with my face down. I do not want them to look at my face at this moment or else my cover would be blown.
Should I try the classic stumbling on nothing thing? I think that would make me look weaker.
'Good! I will trip and Lynn can support me. That's a solid plan'
Lynn who was by my right side, matched my pace and walked a step behind me. Up close she looked younger than her age.
Time to initiate operation 'stumble like a mumble'
I closed my eyes and touched my forehead as I walked. Then I stumbled on purpose and felt myself fall backward.
'Quick Lynn! Catch me!'
However, when I landed, I could instantly feel that something was not right. I was in a pair of very sturdy arms instead of the soft ones that I was expecting.
When I opened my eyes it was not Lynn, but rather it was Luther who had caught me.
"Thank...you.." I said awkwardly in a small voice and pushed him aside.
Luther moved away with my light push without any resistance.
As I walked past Luther, I could see him clenching his fist tight with a dark expression on his face.
"Wait!" Luther called out. He marched towards me and stood towering over my head.
"I will take you back Madam" He said bowing his head.
"It's fin.."
I was about to stop Luther when a thought came to my mind.
'Wait, it's better if I go with him behind me. In case I'm attacked again he'll be there for minimal protection'
"Ok"
I looked at him with a determined mind.
"Pardon my intrusion madam"
Luther looked relieved for some reason. Then he bent down as if he was picking something up when I felt my legs being raised from the ground.
'Eeeek!'
My eyes widened with surprise. Nobody and I mean nobody other than my dad has ever carried me in a princess carry. Not even my brother Clive, but this man was doing it so nonchalantly like it was the most natural thing to do.
'Screw this I'm tired, I might as well make use of this'
Exhausted, I leaned in a little and settled comfortably.
Now I get why the heroines trip all the time. It was basically free transport. Like who wouldn't like that?
'By the way, He's got really broad shoulders and he's handsome'
Do they only employ good-looking people in this house? I wondered.
"This is enough"
I tapped on Luther's shoulder when we reached Edward's room, slid down, and got on my feet.
Right when I was about to reach out to the door, Luther called out to me.
"Madam wait!"
All the way till we reached the front door of Edward's room he didn't utter a single word. He didn't even look at me. I was actually relieved by that since an interrogation is the last thing I want.
"Yes?" I tilted my head to the side.
"Do you need anything? Anyone to... attend to you?" Luther asked, flustered by my question.
"No, I'd like to be left alone" I opened the door.
"Wait!"
'Now what!'
While I understood that he was concerned for my well-being, I needed some space to clear my mind. I was just about to be assassinated. Moreover, pissed for letting the assassin slip off.
"Yes.." I rolled my eyes and turned around.
He had his hand reached out towards me, which slowly he took back when our eyes met.
"Have a good night" He said with droopy eyes.
"Yeah... sure. A good night indeed"
I closed the door and went inside. I could hear Luther ordering the Knights on guard. He sounded fired up.
When I first saw Luther, I thought he resembled a bear. But now he appeared more like a puppy. And an abandoned one at that.
I crossed the waiting room and went into the bedroom without looking at anything else. Closing the bedroom door behind me, I let out the breath that I had been holding in unconsciously.
Suddenly I felt anger flare up inside me. I took out the dagger that I had hidden in my clothes. The longer I looked at it the more rage I felt in my blood.
Up ahead, on top of the bed, Edward was lying in the same position I had seen him since my first day at the Frost estate.
Storming towards him I jabbed the knife on the side table inches away from his face and declared,
"We need to talk my dear husband"
