Santiago's POV
The car ride was silent, with Enzo continually throwing glances at the three of us as if he's checking to make sure we were actually here. This was a shit choice on all our part but it was the only viable one from how I see it. We ignore his glances. Adelina focuses on sharpening one of her knives and Luka looks out the window attempting to avoid getting car sick.
I focus on analyzing our older brother. It was clear he was more trained in business than fighting. With only a gun on him, a pistol at that, he would be an easy target. He may be muscular just like the rest of our family however I know he has never been in a true one-on-one fight. If we decide to stay they will have to learn to protect themselves a hell of a lot better.
Knowing we still had twenty minutes until we get to the house I pull out my phone and type out the report on the mission to send to Nacht. We already covered our tracks and the fact we were leaving with a future co-mafia leader so I just give them a brief overview on what happened, how many we killed, and any other relevant information they might want from the specific mission. We would have to send another update once we get paid for the mission.
Because the Unseen Nightmares pride ourselves on anonymity all our reports go to Nacht to review. Only they know who orders which mission and which assassins complete it. This makes it easy for them to track the assassins and also make sure the people ordering a kill are paying up for the job. I know from experience that ordering a kill then not paying for it only ends one way. Death. We've carried out many missions for the Unseen Nightmares and we are permitted to kill any party who is unable to pay up for a mission they ordered.
We arrive at my childhood home, the place I was allowed to dream, and I don't have to look to Adelina to know she didn't have a reaction to this. Like me, she had all emotional reactions destroyed by the training we went through. Luka however lets his hopefulness and happiness shine for a second before he switches off his emotions.
We've watched them for years, ever since we became good enough to hack undetected, but actually being here felt different. Watching them from a distance or on a computer screen didn't bring back any memories. Looking at the house made all those memories come back.
Playing with the other younger kids and getting in trouble with the older brothers when Emmalyn, Emilio, or Ezequil got hurt. Baking cookies with my mom and aunts. Our dads telling stories at dinner or yelling at the older boys for ditching school. I turn off my phone and get out of the car once Enzo parks.
Adelina, Luka, and I walk with our normal measured steps, our training basically instinct. For me and Adelina more than for Luka. Typically his training only kicks in completely when he is anxious. Enzo, on the other hand, seems to walk with enthusiasm as he types away at his phone leading us into the house. When he walks through the front door with the three of us behind him waves of nostalgia hit me but I brush them off as Enzo calls for our moms.
We were supposed to be raised as one big family, our moms became everyone's mom, same with our dads, and all the children were siblings. However, Adelina, Luka, and I along with The Ace's lost them as our family the day we were taken. We knew the basic story about what happened that night along with our memories but we have also spent time trying to find the people behind the crime. We haven't been able to cross anyone off completely yet. We used to think it was a planned Unseen Nightmare hit and a team hired mercenaries to make it seem like a larger group did it but it didn't make sense on why we were left at that orphanage and then taken in by them.
A rush of footsteps pulls me from my thoughts as our moms rush into the foyer and then freeze as if they were seeing a ghost. In some ways they were. I know they all have had doubts about us still being alive over the years so seeing the three of us just casually standing in the entrance of one of the family homes could be a shock.
Well, a shock if you were capable of emotions. I just look over the three women as tears seem to pool in their eyes. I hear steps behind us and I don't have to turn to know our dads and other two oldest brothers were walking in. I turn in order to see everyone in the room and Adelina copies my actions. Looking over the men and women who were supposed to be our family.
The women seem to snap out of their frozen state and rush towards us hugging the three of us in awkward hugs. I don't partake in my physical contact and if I ever do it's with Adelina or Luka and very rarely one of The Aces. Having the woman who gave birth to me hugging me crying was just weird to me. They seem to realize that Adelina and I are uncomfortable and pull away looking into our blank eyes searching for something that wasn't there anymore. Luka though didn't let his mom pull away as he clings to her for a few more seconds before he lets go.
Don Lombardi was the first to speak, inviting everyone to sit in the living room. His voice tries to hide his emotions but the small waver in his words betray his nerves. Adelina nods in agreement for us and we walk into the living room. It was a well-used room with the younger boys' sports stuff and schoolwork left out and game controllers and other items littered around. Everyone sits but I stay standing in the doorway not wanting to sit. Some of the others look at me but they seem to not want to say anything.
"You three must have questions I assume."
Adelina shrugs, "You most likely have more for us than we do."
They look around at each other clearly conflicted about what to do until Don Morales, my father, came to a decision looking at me, "How much do you remember about us?"
Even though he was looking at me, Adelina answers, "Not a lot, we remember the attack on the building we were in, and then we woke up in an orphanage. They just told us our family was killed in a fire and the six of us were the only survivors. A little after that we were recruited by The Unseen Nightmares." Short but simple giving as little information as needed.
"What about Emma, Emilio, and Ezequil?" Katina, Luka's mother asks.
"A little while after we were recruited Emma was found in a room with another kid and a dead body. According to all reports, she somehow convinced the boy to drink a poison she made. She then proceeded to examine the body and the effects of the poison on it while the other kid ran to tell one of the instructors. After that, we were told she, Emilio, and Ezequil were taken for specialized training. After that we didn't have much contact with them, then they became The Aces and we became The Roses."
Don Volkov Dominik, "How old were they?"
"Four or five I think we tried to help them remember all of you but once they were taken they seemed to have forgotten everything although they were also only three and four so they didn't have that many memories, to begin with. We knew you were mafia so we've kept an eye on you over the years. Contacting you in any way would just put you in danger."
"Danger?"
Adelina nods at Enzo's question but before she can answer the front door opens and our brothers' voices infiltrate the house.
