After a few days of hard travel we finally each the Fold and as I look up at the overlording darkness I think back to the first time I saw it, what feels like a life time ago. When Marco was still alive and the only thing Alina and I were worried about was if we were going to be split from Mal again. Now look, I am one of the most powerful Grisha in history, thousands of miles from my family and travelling with a band of gang members. Inej slides up next to as I climb from the back on Jesper's horse and she holds out a hand to steady me "thank you" I breath sending the Suli girl a smile "I never asked" she says as we head over to the boys "how do you and Kaz know each other?" my heart rate always picks up when someone mentions his name or his plotting gaze falls on to me, as though he thinking of what to do with me when we get to Ketterdam.
"I saved his life a little while ago, I guess he thinks me owes me" I explain as I shrug my shoulders, looking over to the boys I frown "what are they doing?" I mutter watching as the two boys are lying on the floor behind a wagon looking out at the fold. Shaking my head we head over, Inej in between Jesper and Kaz while I lay on the other side of Jesper, the prospect of being so close to Kaz making me nervous. "How many are there?" Inej asks signalling to the guards by the Fold, "two" Kaz answers shortly and I keep my gaze forwards no matter how much I want to look to him, ""at some point at least one of them will have to go tell a superior what they found. We'll go in then" he continues and i notice what looks to be a run down train, I wonder how that got there?
"Not to be that person, Kaz, but are you sure you can drive that thing?" Jesper questions and this time I look over, Kaz barley visible over Jesper's shoulder "we are going to use that thing?" I ask and the Crows all look at me "it's how we got here in the first place" Kaz tells me, his voice cold steel before answering Jesper's question, "yes" a look of disgust on his face. "On the way to Kribirsk while you were bust hugging bait" He continues and the other boy interrupts "Milo. The goats name was Milo" this makes me giggle earning a smile from the darker skinned man. "I was memorising Aiken's timings" Kaz finishes with an air of self importance as though he is proud of himself for being able to count. Inej turns her head towards him and says "not to gang up on you, but Jes has a point. Aiken's system was complicated and the ride was chaotic. No one would blame you for missing a count" this catches the leader by surprise and he turns his nose up as he says "Jes?" jealousy in his tone. Thats actually quite adorable.
"It's Suli, for friendship" Jesper says and the other girl snorts nudging his arm with her own "no its not" she retorts pulling a face and I bite my lip to keep from laughing too loud. "Trust me" Kaz continues, not even missing a beat "Arken and I think alike" there is a massive explosion and we turn our heads to see the train blown up and my heart sinks "well there goes that plan" I saw earning a glare from the man with the cane. "Too soon to appreciate the irony, am I right?" the sharpshooter asks after a moment of silence and we get up to formulate a new plan. Maybe one that doesn't involve old travel.
I wrap my cloak around my body trying to keep it warm as we stand in a circle waiting for Kaz to say something, over the past few days travel with this band of people I have come to realise he is the leader and the plan maker, Inej and Jesper are just the ones acting out the plan. Out of all three of the Crows, Jesper has been the most friendly to me and for that I appreciate, if we make it to the other side of the Fold alive I might just tell him that. Kaz has been by far the coldest but I don't blame him, girl who saves his life but while working for the other side magically switches? I wouldn't trust me ether.
We have made our way to an inn in town, Jesper standing by the window nervously and I am sitting at the table with Kaz, a hand in his beautifully carved cane. "The skiff is still here" Inej says coming in from her surveillance outside "the traveler downstairs are complaining. They were due to cross this morning" she puts her coat on the back of my chair and Kaz adds "orders from the Black General. He plans to cross on it tomorrow" they all look at me and I frown, leaning back and folding my arms "I don't know anything, if I did I would tell you" I say almost hurt they still don't trust me enough. "The General?" Jesper asks looking puzzled "is that the same general who tried to... oh yeah, kill us all" I shake my head throwing my hands up "didn't try to kill me" he snorts "lucky" and I grin at him. "He has the sun summoner" Kaz continues, shifting in his chair and we finally all catch on as Inej asks "was this your plan all along? To have the general get her back so you can take her again?" I look between the criminals confused, I never actually asked why they were this side of the Fold anyway but of course it has something to do with Alina. At least I know she is alive.
"My plan is to get us across the Fold. We aren't prepared for another fight" he says harshly, Jesper walking over and standing behind my chair and Kaz gives me a brief glance. "So you're not going to take another run at Alina? And you're really willing to let a million Kruge go?" Inej asks shortly, loosing her temper slightly and I open my mouth to ask why they want Alina before Kaz looks down at the table almost ashamed and says "Jesper, Salem and I can't do it without you" and I can tell this damages his pride slightly, letting someone know he needs them. I've seen the type before, silent and brooding. Apparently I attract that sort of thing.
