Kaz Brekker is major pain in my ass. I have been in Ketterdam working for the Crows for almost a year and if he isn't asking me to pick up a package, he isn't speaking to me for days and I am worried he was pushed off of the harbour or something. It's night now in Ketterdam and the city is more awake now than during the day, I enter the Crow Club smiling at the sounds of Jesper at a table gambling his money away.
He spies me from the corner of his eye and cheers pointing at me with his guns "where have you been?" He asks and I hug him from behind gently, "oh you know here and there" I send him a wink and head up to the bar. I sit down on a stool, surrounded by tourists taking in the sight of Ketterdam natives at their best "Kvas" I order, some habits you just can't break. I manage to take one sip of my drink before Kaz comes limping past me and he whispers "a word" looking around for Inej, the little Wraith never far from Kaz's side but she isn't anywhere to be seen.
I follow the man up and into his office, a lot quieter then down in the pit but the noise still leaks through "yes" I say standing by the door, my arms folding behind me. I watch as Kaz moves to the other side of his desk and sits down, stretching his bad leg out and rubbing it gently, he only does this with me, afraid to show anyone else his weaknesses. I should be honoured but in truth he is human like everyone else not the monster people claim he is.
"I have a job" he says breaking the pause between us and I raise an eyebrow, letting myself lean against the wall "and what does this job entail?" I ask. Most jobs Kaz gives me keep me in Ketterdam, out of the reach from anyone who might want to garner favour with the Ravkan royals. He looks up from the piece of paper that he was looking at, his dark hair falling slightly into his face, his dark eyes twinkling in the candle light. "It's dangerous, possibly loss of life" he adds and my facial expression stays the same, not giving him the satisfaction of looking shocked.
"You know death doesn't scare me anymore Brekker" I say but it really should, I guess after the third life threat it starts to loose it's horror. Kaz seems to read this in my face and smiles a wicked smile "we are going to break into the Ice Court" the sound makes me bulk and I stand up straight walking closer to the desk "and how much is that worth?" I ask softly leaning over, my hands resting on the wood.
"Thirty million Kruge" he answers, his eyes never straying from my own, mine go wide and I step back "that much!? For what? Why are we going to break into the Ice Court?" I ask not liking the sound of this. Kaz clears his throat and stands from his desk "there is a dangerous drug that makes Grisha stronger" he starts and soon he tells me all about Jurda Parem and the effects he has seen with his own eyes. He makes for the door but I stop him "what happens once this scientist is in merchant hands?" I ask not liking the idea of this information being anywhere in the world let alone here.
"I don't particularly care once I have the money the transaction is complete it doesn't matter what happens to him afterward" he brush past me and opens the door "and if you will excuse me, I have to meet with Nina"
Once out of sight I sigh and push my hair from my face, Kaz is infuriating when he doesn't sit and talk about things. He is probably already planning our break into the Ice Court in Fjerda as he stalks the streets and we will only know what he wants us to know which will make this adventure even more dangerous.
I head back downstairs and join Jesper at the tables as he receives an emotional high from winning. He glances over at me, his face full of joy "you Salem are my lucky charm" he pulls me closer to him and I laugh "I'll keep that in mind" I joke and he orders some drinks putting it on my tab.
A/N: I am not sure how I want to write this part of the book and I apologise if this chapter is bad I am getting my bearings with the new style :)
