After the Indraprastha incident, the atmosphere of Hastinapur was very tensed. The citizens of Hastinapur loved their Crown prince because of his equal treatment to all the citizens. So after that insult by Draupadi, everyone was angry at the Pandavas. Kuru elders also thought that Duryodhana had his fault for being rude and taking out his mace but they were also angry with Draupadi for her rude comment. Maharaj Dhritarashtra almost declared war but Bheesm and Dronacharya stopped him. As Pandavas had support from 100 kings and they have Arjuna a great fighter.
'But we have Karna...tatshree you know what he can do?' asked Dhritarashtra.
Bheesm, 'I know but Karna will never agree to this bloodshed just to avenge a stupid girl's taunting. We can ask for an apology from Yudhishtir and then will try to forget this.'
Duryodhana, 'No forgetting, I just want revenge. I will show everyone what will happen if anyone dares to humiliate the crown prince of Kurus.
Karna, 'Mitra I also agreed with mahamahim. The war will only bring pain and agony, nothing else. War is not the solution. Please let us try to handle this diplomatically first and if they did not agree then we will decide what to do.'
Duryodhana left the chamber in anger. Karna secretly asked Bheesm to send Shakuni to Gandhar and Aswatthama to Panchal for some time so that they could not poison Duryodhana anymore. Bheesm agreed with him. He sent Shakuni and Aswatthama away for some time.
Duryodhana was almost hysteric with anger. He tried to burn his room in anger, but it was Karna who jumped into the fire and dragged him outside.
Karna shouted, 'What are you doing Mitra? You are trying to give up your life just for that stupid girl. Please think about mata Gandhari and Sister Bhanumati before doing anything foolish.'
Karna somehow consoled Duryodhana but he knew that this fire in Duryoadhana's heart was not going to extinguish so soon. He returned home with a heavy heart. He knew this time the entire thing was gone too far. Now only a miracle could stop the disaster.
On the other hand, Dusshasshan had an evil plan in mind. Princess of Magadha Charulata came to the Yagna and she was extremely beautiful and Dusshashan immediately lusted after her. But she was a close friend of Shubhadra and Magadha had an alliance with both Indraprashtha and Dwarka. So he planned to kidnap her secretly and marry her. After marriage, no one would do anything as in the society after marriage a girl was considered as husband's property. He was also very angry with Karna for not saving his friend, so he continuously poisoned Duryodhana against Karna. Duryodhana already was in a vulnerable condition started to doubt Karna's loyalty.
'If he loves you so much then why did he not do anything on Indraprastha? Why did he not attack Krishana or protect Shishupal? Brother, he is a friend of Krishna, maybe that trickster sent him to spy on us.' said Dusshasshan. Duryodhana was a man who did not understand politics or diplomacy much. It was very easy to manipulate him.
Dusshashan came to know both Subhadra and Charulata were going to Ujjain to attend puja at Mahakal temple. So he went there with some of their men in disguise and waited in the nearby forest. Charulata and Shubhadra did not bring many guards with them. So when they were passing through the forest Dusshsshan attacked their chariot and kidnapped both of them. They brought them to Hastinapura thinking that if they kept Shubhadra hostage then both Krishna and Arjuna would not attack them. But little did he knew that his biggest threat was already present in the Palace.
He brought two princesses into the palace and hid them in the basement dungeon so that the elders did not get any inkling of them. He planned to secretly marry Charulata and also tarnishing Shubhadra's purity so that Pandavas would be humiliated. He was also angry with Subhadra as she rejected him to marry Arjun. But Avantika already had a small spy network of her, working in the palace as maids. Avantika used them to know what Dusshasshan or other evil Kauravas were up to.
When she came to know about the heinous act, she was shocked. What was Dusshasshan thinking? He kidnapped Shri Krishna's sister. Haladhar Balaram would graze the entire Hastinapur. Avantika was fuming with rage. She Informed Karna and both of them took Bheesm and went to the basement. Dusshasshan along with some other Kauravas were there arranging for the marriage. Charulata was crying and begging them to leave her. Subhadra also threatened them. Then Karna, Avantika and Bheesm entered the basement.
Bheesm roared, 'Dusshasshan, what do you think you are doing?'
Dusshasshan slyly, 'Pitamaha I am expanding our alliance with Magadha. I am marrying her.'
Bheesm, 'How dare you to touch a girl without her consent. And how could you kidnap Putri Subhadra. She is the kulvadu of Kuruvansh and sister of Dwarkadhish. Let's forget Arjun, her brothers will destroy Hastinapur.'
Dusshasshan was drunk. He said, 'Shut up you old fool. Don't forget you are nothing but a servant of ours. I am the prince and I can do anything. You cannot touch me as you took the vow.'
Karna had enough. He roared and charged the Kauravas. Both he and Avantika started fighting with the Kauravas. He beat all of them and started thrashing Dusshasshan, 'How dare you talk to Pitamaha like that. You not only disrespect your elder but also tried to malign a women's dignity. I am not going to spare you.'
Dusshasshan fainted but Karna was so enraged that he still did not stop the beating. Both Avantika and Bheesm somehow dragged him away from the unconscious Dusshasshan. They were stunned to see Karna in such a violent state as Karna never lost his calm whatever happened. Bheesm took both the abducted women to the main palace. Dhritarashtra and Gandhari were shocked to hear their son's deed. Dhritarashtra called an urgent meeting in the morning to settle the problem as Dwarka and Indraprastha as well as Magadh would attack them surely.
Duryodhana was out of Hastinapur during that incident so he was not aware of the entire situation. When he entered the palace some Kauravas informed him that Karna beat Dusshasshan. He rushed to his room and saw his brother in terrible condition. Duryodhana was already frustrated and for the past few days, his mind was already clouded with doubts about Karna. So without thinking anything Duryodhana went to the court and saw all the elders there along with Karna. Duryodhana who once believed in Karna more than his own brother, today he rushed to him and punched him in his face.
Duryodhana, 'How dare you touched my brother?'
Karna was surprised as well as all the ministers and the elders.
Karna, 'Mitra what are you doing?'
Duryodhana, 'Don't call me Mitra, you sutputra. I gave you a place in this palace, I make you my assistant that does not mean you forgot your standard. People said right one should stay in their limit. One should not give respect to the slaves as they don't deserve it.'
Karna, 'Please for once listen to me.'
Duryodhana, 'No I am not. In fact that day Bheem was right, it's your parents who failed to give you good teachings. You deserved to be a servant just like your Suta father.'
Karna had enough, 'Shut Up! How dare you Duryodhana insult, my parents? You know what... I was wrong. All of you are the same.'
Everyone was stunned as Karna was almost glowing like a sun. Karna was so enraged that he could not control his divine powers.
Duryodhana, 'Get out, I called you a friend once that is why I am not going to arrest you. But get lost from here bloody sutputra. I don't want to see your face.'
Karna, 'I also don't want to stay in a place where women were considered as a mere object of pleasure. ' Saying that he gestured Avantika how was fuming to go with him.
Everybody in the sabha was stunned to see the fighting between two friends. The Bheesm screamed, 'Duryodhana you fool, do you know what you have done?'
Dhritarashtra, 'You imbecile, Karna is the only one who can placate Vasudev and you insulted him.'
Then Vidur told him everything. Duryodhana was shocked. What in the name of God his brother did? Duryodhana never misbehaved with a woman and he knew it was a sin. He also understood what the consequence would be when mahabali Balaram and Shri Krishna came to know about this. Karna was Krishna's friend and only he could stop the upcoming war with Dwarka. Then a guard came running said that Balram, Krishna and Arjun came to Hastinapura with the entire Narayani Sena and an army of Indraprasth. They were also informed that Magadh was also planning an attack.
Listening to this Dhritarashtra was paled. He knew what was the meaning of that. Their Hastinapur would be destroyed. Bheesm. Guru Dron and Vidur went outside unarmed. Balaram and Arjun were fuming, even Krishna was angry. They invited them inside and returned both Charulata and Subhadra to them. Subhadra informed how Karna, Avantika and Bheesm saved them. Dhritarashtra begged Balaram for mercy. Though Balaram was angry but he also did not want a war so he warned king Dhritarashtra and as a punishment, Dusshasshan was exiled to a remote area of Anga for few months.
Krishna asked about Karna and Vidur informed him what happened. Arjun felt grateful to Karna and Avantika as they protected his wife. Krishna went to Karna's house.
Krishna, 'Karna I know what happened between you two. Thank you Karna for helping my sister.'
Karna (angrily), 'Prabhu it is my honor to serve you. But now enough is enough. All royalties are the same arrogant, egoistic. They cannot respect anyone. Women are like commodities to them.'
Krishna, 'I understand mitra. In fact, I also tried to show the truth to your blood brothers but they are also blinded by arrogance.'
Karna (angrily), 'For others my brother Yudhishtir is the epitome of Dharma, but to me, he is a fool who just memorizes some verses and follows them blindly without understanding the inner meanings. And all the other Pandavas are as arrogant, rude as the Kauravas. I thought maybe Duryodhana was different. At least he did not pretend to be righteous like Yudhishtir. He thinks about every people irrespective of their castes. But he is volatile, arrogant, and impulsive. Keshav, I am scared for my country's future.'
Krishna, 'Me too mitra me too. I can clearly see a future where people will fight in the name of caste, religion, color, language and divide our country into pieces. External enemies will utilize our weakness and will make our country their subservient. Women will be r***d, they will be sold as slaves. Only a strong king and sense of unity can save us from such horror.'
Karna, 'But who will be the king? It will be best if both Yudhishtir and Duryodhana work together. But no.... they are fighting like dogs. No Prabhu I am done with this politics. Lord Mahadev ordered me to take care of my mother and I will save her from any danger. But apart from that, I am not interested in this Kuru family and their antics.'
Krishna (thinking), 'No mitra you cannot leave them so easily. You have to give a big sacrifice for your family.'
Krishna, 'Karna there is something important I have to tell you about Indraprastha. Because of your influence, Hastinapur is now giving basic education to all people, in fact, in Dwarka we don't have any caste difference. But Indraprastha is still following them blindly. A few days back a young Shudra boy read some verses of Vedas from a scroll in a sage's house. As a punishment, those sages burned the mouth of the boy with hot oil. His mother went to Yudhishtir's court to get justice but according to the law a shudra was not allowed to read Vedas and a Brahmin can't be punished.'
Karna (shouting), 'What how could my brother be so stupid?'
Krishna, 'The mother left the court cursing Kunti bua that her sons will also feel the pain that her son felt. Karna, it's a mother's curse which is the strongest of all curses. Karna a big problem is coming. You gave your words to Lord Mahadev, so you have to protect them if Kunti bua needs you.'
Karna (irritated), 'For how long Keshav? Why my mother is not accepting me. She behaved as if I am a nobody. Her sons insult me without any apparent reason and she remains silent.'
Then stood up and walked towards the river. Tears were flowing from his eyes, 'Prabhu, I love my mother but her neglect tortures me. She knew who I am but still, she never acknowledges me. I don't want her to inform about me to others as it will tarnish her reputation. But at least she can talk to me in private. How can a mother be so heartless.'
Karna fell on his knees on the riverbank. He almost broke down, 'When I was leaving Suryalok, I saw the pain in Mata Sangya and Mata Chaya's eyes. They were crying for me though I am not born from them. Even Radhama turns hysteric if I was upset or fought with the demons. She knew I am a demi-god but still she cares for me like my brothers. But the woman who had me in her womb for 9 months is so cold to me. Why...Prabhu...Why?
Krishna stood up and came towards Karna. He sat beside him and hugged him, 'Karna be strong...she is not saying anything does not mean she is not in pain. She misses you but scared for society.'
Karna, 'No Prabhu, not anymore. If she needs my help then at least she has to confess to me her secret. Otherwise, I will not do anything. For this disobedience, if Lord Shiva wants.... he can punish me. I will endure all his punishments but cannot bear any more neglects from my mata Kunti.'
Krishna, 'Okay Karna as you wish. But I will advise you not to keep any secret from Avantika. She is going to be your wife. One should not hide anything from their life partners.'
In Kailash
Mata Parvati was feeling sad for Karna and Mahadev looked angry.
Parvati, 'Prabhu please don't be angry on Karna. Try to understand his pain.'
Mahadev, 'Devi I am not angry on Karna but on Kunti. I know she is worried about society but at least she can talk to Karna, if she wants she can stop her other sons from humiliating Karna. But no, she is not doing anything. But I cannot see Karna in pain anymore. Kunti shall be punished for her sins.
Parvati, 'Pravu I agree with you.'
