Tang Shushui prepared a little meal for his family once more. The family savored their meal before retiring to their beds. Tang Shushui, on the other hand, was engrossed in his thoughts as he lay on his bed. He didn't have much money left, and he needed to start a salon and a boutique. He hadn't gone to the restaurant in a while, and he also needed to introduce some new menu items.
He usually opened his restaurant at 11:00 a.m. because his employees needed training, but it had been two months since he had done so, so he decided to open it earlier, which would also make sense given his new menu. Tang Shushui quickly dozed off with this in mind.
Tang Shushui awoke at the crack of dawn the next morning. He made rice porridge with pickled vegetables. He also prepared Bento boxes for the children to take to school. When the kids returned home, he observed how hungry they were and inquired. The children confessed to him they didn't like the school's meals and just ate snacks. The school did not provide meals, but because the students in the Xiaohai classes were young, they were unable to purchase food outside of school and could only purchase meals in the schoolyard.
Perhaps it was because of his parents' lack of love and care in his previous life, but he indulged his little in-laws and daughter very much, so he promised to prepare their lunch boxes, even if it meant getting up earlier. The children were pleased and expressed their gratitude to Tang Shushui right away. Tang Shushui grinned as he proceeded to pack the lunchboxes, recalling how happy the children were.
A substantial meal awaited the family when they awoke about an hour later. Haohao prepared the children while the moms set the tables, as Tang Shushui was the one who cooked. They sat at the table and ate breakfast while having a light discussion once they finished what they needed to do.
Their breakfast took them around twenty minutes to finish. Tang Shushui then handed the kids their lunch boxes and organized their backpacks. The kids were overjoyed to receive the lunchboxes, but they preferred to wait until school to open them.
The majority of the family left after finishing their preparations. Only the moms and the Shen family remained at home. Because they were all still a bit malnourished, plus Sister-in-law Shen was expecting and had to care for a newborn, Tang Shushui didn't let the Shen family work much. Because the mother was not offered any work, they just remained at home and embroider. While the husbands went to the farms, Haohao and Tang Shushui went to the restaurant.
When he and Haohao arrived, it was six in the morning. The workers greeted them and awaited directions. Since Li Shi Qing is the manager, Tang Shushui had no commands. Tang Shushui trusted Li Shi Qing with his business since she was always orderly. Li Shi Qing was thankful that her boss trusted her this much, because of him now she can walk with her head high. It wasn't always like this for her, even if she is now respected.
She was from a very poor family and resided in Yaitou village. Her father was the Li family's pampered son. The Li family was never without anything for their kid, even if they were impoverished. Deng Niu, Li Shi Qing's mother, was from an even poorer household than her father, Li Gen. Deng Niu, despite her poverty, was a lovely young lady.
Everything was going well after a year of marriage, and even Mother Li was pleased with her new daughter-in-law. Deng Niu had excellent treatment till she became pregnant and gave birth to a daughter. Despite the fact that Li Gen was disappointed, he did not mistreat Deng Niu, Mother Li was still unhappy, and she even refused to feed the newborn Li Shi Qing at one point. Deng Nui became pregnant twice more throughout the marriage and had two more daughters.
This was the point at which Li Gen's attitude began to shift. He began shouting at her, putting her down, and striking her. Mother Li was the same, and while Father Li didn't do such things, his contempt for his daughter-in-law was palpable. Li Shi Qing and her three sisters would wake up to find their mother had been beaten, her face bloodied and her body black and blue, and they would occasionally find themselves being beaten as well. This carried on until she was twelve years old when her mother was repudiated.
Li Gen brought in a pregnant woman and kicked out her mother. Both Mother and Father Li supported and assisted their son in his decision. Deng Niu realized that making a fuss wouldn't help her or her children eat, so she quietly left the Li House and went looking for work. When she learned of her daughter's desire to learn, she tightened her belt and did everything she could to ensure that she attended school.
Li Shi Qing learned when she was thirteen years old that her father's new wife had given birth to a chubby boy for him. Chang Dandan, Li Gen's new wife, visited her mother's house to show off. Despite her mother's smile as she praised Chang Dandan, Li Shi Qing knew her mother had cried all night. One of the reasons she worked so hard in school was because of this. She vowed to herself that she would never again see her mother in such a vulnerable state.
She put in a lot of effort at school, but she quickly realized that it was in vain. The school's system was completely corrupted. It makes no difference how hard you work; if you are poor and have no connections, the credit you gain will be awarded to a noble or someone wealthy.
She, Tong Donghai, and their friends refused to believe the truth, to embrace reality, so they continued to go to school to give themselves false hopes.
They only began to see reality properly when Tong Donghai had a fortunate encounter with Tang Shushui. Tong Dongahai revealed he was offered a job by a kind ger who also told him he could bring several companions. Li Shi Qing was first skeptical, but she eventually accepted after remembering her malnourished little sisters and mother.
She and her friends were still hesitant to quit school at first, but when a noble girl tried to take her credit and the instructor turned a blind eye, she finally decided to go. She turned sixteen this year and should have finished a year ago, but her instructors held her back, claiming she didn't pass the test when she knew she did. They wanted her to keep working like a horse and give her credit to some noble girl whilst also making money. All of her friends went through a similar ordeal and decided to join her in departing.
Their employer was pleasant and caring, and he looked after them. Despite the fact that her employer and several of her friends were the same age, he still acted like an adult. Since she was a woman, Li Shi Qing never anticipated being placed in the most important position in the restaurant. She was paid three taels on the first day, which was the first time she had ever seen so much money. The employer praised her competence and intelligence, so he gave her additional responsibilities outside of the restaurant. She was happy to do so as a kind of reparation, but the employer flatly refused and instead paid her twenty taels every month.
She had already earned three taels during her first day of work, and as she walked home, she recalled her starving family. She quickly returned, leased a donkey cart, and purchased necessities. White rice, white flour, noodles, pork meat, poultry, ducks, eggs, cloth, seasoning, oil, salt, and sugar were among the items she purchased. She bought until the cart was completely loaded. Even though she only had around two hundred copper coins in her hands, she didn't seem remorseful at all.
Everyone stared and whispered when she arrived in the village with all those groceries. She ignored them and continued on her way to her house. Her two younger sisters were the first to welcome her when she arrived home.
"What are all those things, Eldest Sister?" Li Dongmei, her younger sister, inquired, her eyes wide with curiosity. Li Dongmei was just eight years old at the time, but she appeared like a five-year-old due to her malnutrition.
"Sister brought food for you guys" As she stroked her little sister's head, Li Shi Qing replied.
"Is this all for us?" Li Qingling, her younger sister, interjected and inquired, surprised. Her younger sister was twelve years old, but she was terribly underweight and didn't appear to be her age.
"Yes, now please come and help me." As she began taking some belongings to their little yard, Li Shi Qing instructed.
The two sisters proceeded to fetch their mother to assist them. Deng Niu bombarded her eldest daughter with questions as soon as she stepped out and spotted all the goods. Li Shi Qing promised to address all of her questions once they had all of the items inside. Her mother complied and offered help.
The family ate rice with pork later that evening. This was Li Dongmei's and Li Qingling's first taste of meat in their whole lives. Deng Niu and her daughters had a delicious meal as Li Shi Qing talked about her recent experiences. Deng Niu was taken aback when she learned that her daughter, who had always enjoyed learning, had dropped out, but she supported her decision.
The family went to bed for the first time with a full stomach. Li Shi Qing got up the next day and got ready for work. When she went out to eat breakfast, her relatives and sisters were taken aback when they saw her in her work clothes. She had changed clothes since she went to the market the day before, so her family hadn't seen her work uniform yet. They were surprised to see Li Shi Qing wear such good quality cloth, but they didn't pry about it. Before she left, she and her family ate a hearty breakfast of noodles.
This was pretty much how her days went. She and her family have been properly nourished and clothed since she started working at Jiang's Restaurant. She even gave allowances to her sisters. She would occasionally bring them food from the restaurant or gifts she bought from town. She hired several workmen to come and fix her family's house once she received her monthly income. She transformed the formerly dilapidated house into a four-room brick home. She could just move to the dorms when it was completed and move her family in, but her sisters were too young.
Deng Niu was a beautiful rural woman, and her daughters had inherited her genes without a doubt. The residents of the town, particularly the aristocracy, showed little regard for those who did not share their wealth. Her sisters were attractive and young, so if they attracted the attention of a lord and were given the order to become a concubine, she would be unable to prevent it. She'd rather play it safe than risk being caught off guard.
She made chicken coops and other animal coops for her mother once her house was completed. She didn't want her mother to have to undertake any difficult jobs, so she recruited Shi Luo, a guy who had been ostracized by the village due to bad luck, to farm the land she had purchased. Li Shi Qing spent some time with him and realized that he wasn't bad-looking and was really hardworking. When ideas like those entered her mind, she would always shake her head.
Since she began working with Tang Shushui, her days have been wonderful. Both her sisters and her mother had gained weight within a month of working for Tang Shushui. Her sister's features had become more apparent, while her mother's beauty was gradually returning.
People gossiped about the house she built and how her family looked now, but one thing all these gossips had in common was that they were mocking the Li family. Wasn't it a smack in the face that the daughter they disliked was now so successful?
The Li family, particularly Mother Li, was agitated. She was anything but depressed after ejecting Deng Niu. She had two wonderful grandchildren, and her son had finally found work in town, bringing the family's income up. Because everything transpired following her daughter-in-law's repudiation she blamed Deng Niu for her their bad experiences.
Her life, however, did not remain joyful for long. One after the other, news of that family's success arrived. She became irritated and sent her daughter-in-law to find out more. When Chang Dandan returned home, she informed the family of Deng Niu's and her family's circumstances. She informed them about the house, the kids' weight, their clothing, and the fact that they had jewelry and money.
Mother Li was taken aback when she heard everything. The children chubby and white? Was it true that they lived in a brick house? Did the kids really have a ten-copper-coin allowance? She was perplexed. The grandchild she despised so much was so successful? Then she remembered how they had been living with her for the last twelve years. Yes, she looked after them for twelve years. Isn't it only right that they repay her?
Mother Li puffed her chest and walked over to Deng Niu's house with this in mind. Her eyes practically dropped out of their sockets when she arrived. Is this the house where they used to live? It was built of bricks! It had even been painted. Mother Li's resolve grew even stronger as a result of this.
Deng Niu and her family had just started eating pork fried rice with strawberry milk when she barged in. Deng Niu and her daughters were laughing and eating at the same time, creating a wonderfully captivating scene. Deng Niu, Li Gen's ex-wife, entranced Li Gen, who had followed his family here. He was taken aback to see his ex-wife so pleased.
"You seem to have lost your manners?" Mother Li screamed to draw attention to herself.
Deng Niu shuddered as she turned around to see who was there in her courtyard. This was the pair that had been beating her for years. On the other hand, Li Shi Qing just scoffed. This was a family she despised to the core. They were expected to show up and be shameless, but this early? It was simply too embarrassing.
"If you don't go now, I'll report you for trespassing to the Yamen." Li Shi Qing was threatening, her voice cold. She wouldn't waste her time on those who couldn't grasp reality. These folks were simply too delusional for her.
"Shi Qing! How could you address your grandma in such a manner?" With his brows wrinkled, Li Gen admonished. He had no idea his daughter would threaten him in this way. When he found out what his daughter had been up to, he was taken aback. He felt some fatherly affection as he saw his other two daughters going about the village, and they were all so lovely. He decided that having three daughters wouldn't be that horrible, so he joined the rest of his family here in the hopes of reconciling with them.
"Shu Luo, Can you please go to the yamen and report the Li family for trespassing?" Li Shi Qing turned to Sui Luo and asked. She really wouldn't bother with these people.
When the Li family realized Li Shi Qing was serious about reporting them, they fled the courtyard in terror. They couldn't help but remember how well-dressed the kids and Deng Niu were, as well as how well-fed they were. Deng Niu's family was still on Mother Li's mind. She could feed her grandkids even more if she could acquire money from them.
The Li family came to stir problems over the following few days, but they were constantly booted out. The people observed how Deng Niu's and her family's lives were improving as a result of her daughter. After seeing how a daughter brought so much prosperity to her family, most households in Yaitou village decided that having a daughter wasn't such a terrible idea.
