The Lin family was furious yet helpless in the situation. Old Man Lin, a proud Xiucai, was unwilling to argue with someone he saw as inferior because it would make him look bad, but Old Lady Lin was different. She and Old Lady Liu were childhood friends, but because Old Lady Liu was more attractive than she was, she grew envious and made Old Lady Liu into an enemy.
Even Old Xiucai Lin had fallen head over heels in love with Old Lady Liu and desired to wed her, but sadly he was rejected since she loved Old Man Liu. Old Xiucai Lin was determined to pursue her and persuade her, but before he could, Old Lady Lin deceived him into her bed and later changed her identity to Madam Lin.
Old Man Lin became a Xiucai because he was so smart, so he immediately noticed that he was tricked. He married her to protect his reputation because he was a scholar at that time, but he never gave her genuine affection. After she gave birth to two daughters and a son for him, Old Man Lin became less cold and treated her like his wife out of respect and love for his children, but in her heart, she knew that he had never forgotten about Old Lady Liu.
Old Man Lin was arrogant but he wasn't an evil person, he reached a deal with Xie Zhu because he knew she would've divorced Liu Hong sooner or later, plus she was even thinking of selling her daughters so out of all the people in the village he chose her because she didn't care about family relations.
He was really unhappy to learn about the twins' accomplishments. He thought about all the struggles he had gone through to eventually accomplish and felt like the girls had done nothing but succeeded. But eventually, he became calm and reminded himself not to be greedy, remembering the teachings of his master. He even went so far as to warn his wife, his son, and his daughter-in-law. She was even more unhappy when her husband forewarned her, so she made the decision to take matters into her own hands.
Old Lady Lin always regarded herself as a noble, and as such, she behaved accordingly. She hosted a gathering for the village wives the following day. All of the wives were aware that they had to go in order to avoid upsetting her. Old Lady Liu didn't even care and came because of their previous connection.
When Old Lady Liu arrived, she observed Old Lady Lin and Old Lady Wen, the wife of Old Man Wen, a modest trader who nonetheless earned quite a bit of money, laughing together. She figured they were purposefully ignoring her, but she didn't want to fawn on anyone so she coughed to let them know she was there. Finally, the two turned their heads, a sneer on their lips, ready to make fun of Old Lady Liu, but they were frozen in place.
An embroidered design of begonia flowers could be seen on the old lady's blue lotus hanfu. Two silver hairpins held her hair in a cobra bun. She wore a set of gold earrings and two bracelets made of silver. Begonia flowers were embroidered on both her shoes and the clothing she was wearing. Old Lady Liu never had a difficult life despite being over forty because her husband, Old Man Liu, was a successful carpenter. She scarcely had wrinkles, though her skin had begun to become a little rough. And it even seemed like her skin had gotten better.
Old Lady Lin and Old Lady Wen were shocked to see their old friend like this. They both were waiting to humiliate her but got humiliated instead. Old Lady Liu didn't have to say anything, her clothes spoke for themselves. The wives couldn't help but look at Old Lady Liu in a different light, for her to be able to directly crush somebody's pride like that.
Old Lady Lin was ashamed of what had happened and spent the entire week inside her home. When she attempted to anger Old Man Lin but failed terribly, she was scolded. Xie Zhu attempted to start a commotion as well, but her father-in-law stopped her. As a result, the twins' lives were pleasant and they were getting richer by the day.
Though their life seemed smooth sailing without any hardships, to be able to be the most popular waitresses they had to work twice as hard as the other waitresses. They went to the boss for advice and he gave them tricks and things to work with. They had to memorize almost everyone in this town, tell which client is profitable, and learn to appease without sexual intentions. They had to know who was married and who was not, who was noble, and who was rich. So when they saw these two young men they knew that they weren't simple and only do their best not to offend them.
"What would you like to eat, sirs?" With a smile, Liu Shuang enquired.
"Well, since my neighbor over here cannot eat meat, it would be nice if you had any seafood or vegetarian options." Tao Tengfei stated in a soft voice, with a gentle smile. If one did not know, they would honestly believe that this man was a dedicated scholar, but in actuality, he was a player to the bone.
"I suppose you're in luck. Steamed whole fish is a brand-new dish that our restaurant just launched. I would suggest steamed eggs and shrimp porridge as additional dishes." Liu Guang answered politely; she had impeccable manners.
"Okay bring those for him, for me, I would like to have a large bowl of liangpi, a medium bowl of Sichuan dumplings, a small bowl of chicken wonton soup, an extra large bowl of plain white rice, and a small bowl of pickled vegetables. I would like to try your new beverage called coffee, I would like mine with milk and he would like without, a medium cup would so for both of us. For dessert two medium bowls of mango pudding, and a tael worth of mung bean cakes." Tao Tengfai ordered as he continued to look at the menu.
"Okay, we will be right with you sirs!" Liu Shuang responded cheerfully after writing down their orders. That being said she turned around and headed for the kitchen. While the waitresses went to get their food, the males had idle took. Around ten minutes the two waitresses came back with a small cart. The two young men we shocked by the speed they got served. Even in the best restaurant in the capital you at least wait thirty minutes.
"Here are your meals sirs." Liu Guang said respectfully as he served them.
"Well, thank you." With a courteous response, Xui Shirong responded.
After the waitresses placed the food in front of them, they uncovered and showed what was hiding underneath the teal covers. Immediately the aroma of the food served went wild, the food's vibrant colors indicated how fresh and flavorful it would be. The mere sight of the meal served as an invitation. The whole fish was cooked in Sichuan sauce, and it smelled as good as it looked. The potent sour and spicy aroma overwhelmed their minds and assaulted their nostrils. The Liang pi looked and smelled just as appetizing, and unlike those two strong dishes, the shrimp porridge had a subtle fragrance. It felt soft, and the mild fragrance felt like a massage to their soul.
They took their chopsticks and got ready to eat after the servers finished serving. Despite the fact that it appeared and smelled nice, Xiu Shirong had little optimism. His parents tried to give him seafood frequently because he had a sensitive tongue and disliked the taste and smell of meat ever since he was a little child. As a result, he generally consumed bland porridge or vegetarian meals. He had some cooks who could cook well for him, but they only made light cuisine, so he didn't have high expectations for this Sichuan meal.
Liu Guang had already deboned the fish for him so he just had to do it. He took his chopstick and took a bite of the whole steamed fish. Immediately he felt a burst of flavor in his mouth. The fish had already been deboned for him by Liu Guang; all he had to do was consume it. He used a chopstick to eat a piece of the whole steaming fish. He immediately experienced a rush of flavor in his mouth. As the Sichuan broth poured into his mouth, it numbed the tongue. He noticed a slight addiction to the tingling sensation on his tongue. Even though the food was extremely spicy and flavorful, he was nevertheless drawn to it. His appetite increased dramatically after taking the first mouthful. He devoured the fish in a short amount of time, spoon by spoon.
Tao Tengfei no longer had any doubts after witnessing his usually cool and collected friend lose his noble demeanor over the meal served and picked up his chopstick and begin eating as well. He took one of the brightly colored, chili oil-covered dumplings in his hand. Just the sight was tempting. He felt the soft, silky skin of one of the dumplings as he bit into it. As soon as the skin split, the chili oil in his mouth slowly faded and was replaced by tasty pork and cabbage. He quickly finished his meal because the more he chewed, the more he craved.
The dish of white rice, chicken wonton soup, and pickled veggies was split between him and Xiu Shirong. Their numb tongue was soothed by the mild flavor. They chose to split the remaining food because they were pretty much full. They split the shrimp porridge, but Xiu Shirong ended up eating the majority of it because he was used to eating such light fare. Nevertheless, this porridge was one of the greatest he has ever had. They split a bowl of liangpi, but since it was still early in the morning and the sun wasn't so strong yet, it didn't seem to have much of an impact.
They ended up enjoying the coffee so much that they requested two more to go. Finally, they were so stuffed that they had to take their desserts to go. They would be leaving the town it a week so there was still time to come and enjoy more food from the restaurant.
"We are finished, we are ready to pay." This time it was Xiu Shirong who spoke with a gentle voice as he was extremely satisfied.
"Yes, sir, your total is five taels and five hundred seventy-five wen; please sign here." While handing them their bill, Li Shuang remarked. Li Shuang and Li Guang each signed it after they had already done so.
Xui Shirong paid them with a golden tael and told them to keep the rest. It was a tip for the restaurant as a whole and then given the two sisters both a golden tael as a tip. The sisters we shocked by his generosity but did not decline it. These people were nobles and were super rich, they were poor and were here to make living on what basis could they decline it? The rest of the food that was uneaten was packed as take-out for the two young men. With that, the two young men went out of the restaurant very satisfied.
