Seeing that the selection was about to begin, the children who were still studying put down their books and made their way to the hall. In the crowd of children, four children were particularly eye-catching. Even though they weren't dressed as expensively as the young masters and misses, their clothes and bags were very novel, plus they were the only ones looking easygoing despite the tense atmosphere. Every now and then you could hear the sound of laughter coming from their group.
Even though the teachers were acquainted with this particular group of students, they were still surprised, but the teachers who taught the kids themselves thought that it was only expected. After all these kids were some of the best students in this school.
They had hardly any foundation when they first joined the school. Despite the fact that they could read and write a few characters, they were still very lacking. But in just three months, they progressed to the point where they were among the top twenty. The professors were astonished by the students' quick development and felt they were geniuses, but Tang Shushui is of course wholly responsible for this. The kids weren't geniuses, but because he taught them using modern techniques, they were able to pick things up quite quickly.
He also taught the kids other things, such as literature, poetry, archery, fist fighting, dancing, embroidery, calligraphy, arithmetics, and many other things. He gave the kids these resources and it was up to them to learn or not, and the kids really did not disappoint. They were very enthusiastic to learn, which actually surprised Tang Shushui. He's seen so many kids forget their past when they become rich and just rely on the fact that they now had money, and became lazy. He was already prepared to wield the rod, but he was embarrassed on return. These kids really reminded them of his son in his past life, he was just as enthusiastic. Taking advantage of the enthusiasm of the kids and taught them to the best of his abilities, which was a lot.
Chunhua picked up all the five arts, but she was very proficient in playing the qin, and embroidery. Lui Qiu also picked up the five arts, but she failed all of them and was proficient in dancing and archery. Chaoxiang picked up the four arts but was proficient in arithmetic and martial arts, especially kung fu. Cai'er pricked up both the five arts and four arts but was very proficient in calligraphy and poetry.
These skills were of course demonstrated in front of the teachers, so they knew just how good these students were, and thus thought it was normal for them to calm down. Though the teachers were thinking so much about the situation, the kids on the other hand were calm. It was not that they were confident, it was simply that they didn't care.
At first, they admired these reputed figures and wished to someday be like them, but seeing how talented their Tang Shushui was they were no longer surprised by other talents. They didn't want the evaluation and recognition of others, they only wanted that of Tang Shushui, so they didn't really care about the evaluation of the teachers. So it was only normal that they were calm.
They walked into the hall and looked around. The hall had something that was like a platform, it was where the kids would perform. Before the podium, there were five chairs with tables, and pots of teas on them, this was where the judges would seat. In the middle of the room and all the way back were long tables with benches, this was where the kids would sit.
The kids quietly took their seats according to when they were going to perform. All four siblings sat together since they were going to perform one after the other. The table they were sitting at had many noble kids on it, but only five of them were truly worth fearing. They all came from the most powerful aristocratic houses.
First was Zeng Renshu, his father was Grand Chancellor, and his mom was the eldest Di daughter of the Minister of justice. His mom was the main wife, and she was smart. The Grand Chancellor's backyard was tightly managed, and the main wife was very much favored, plus she gave birth to three kids. So it was only natural that the Grand Chancellor adore the kids. He spoiled his two Di daughters rotten and gave his Di son only the best of the best so it was expected of them to be spoiled. And since he was spoiled it was inevitable for him to be naughty, so the Grand Chancellor decided to send him to his aunt's house in this town for a year, and he had to go to school so they chose here.
The second one was Lao Meifeng, the third di daughter of the Minister Of Finance. Her mother was the shu daughter of the He family, the second richest merchants in the empire. She was unfavored at home until she successfully married the Minister Of Finance and got his unlimited favor. They backed her up and successfully made her into an official wife of the Minister Of Finance, so her daughter naturally enjoyed the benefit, and became the most favored daughter of the Minister Of Finance. She was here to try and familiarize herself with Zeng Renshu, so they could at least have some connection in the future.
The third one was Su Junjie, the second young master of the Minister Of Justice. His mother was the shu daughter born of General Yan and was unfavored at home, so she was very timid and plain. She was married off as a concubine and gave birth to the second-born son of the Minister Of Justice, but because his mother was not favored he was also not favored. His mother had no way of sending him to an expensive school so she sent him to this one with hopes of him succeeding.
The fourth one was Sun Huiling, the fifth young master of the Sun family. His father was the Minister Of Steward, and his mother was the only daughter of the Imperial Counselor, hence she was very favored at home. She married Sun Shunyan whose status was below her because she loved him. The Imperial Counselor loved his daughter deeply and hence complied. Luo Jinjing lived a monogamous life with her husband for five years and gave birth to three children, plus his father-in-law also helped him, and even showed signs of letting him succeed him, but on the sixth year of their marriage, Sun Shunyan brought in two concubines and married a second official wife. Luo Jinjing was heartbroken but she worried more about her children and thus ruthlessly cut him off and remarried somebody else. Not wanting the same thing to repeat she married her new husband into her family. Her father once again complied, and Sun Shunyan was now forever blocked from getting a promotion. Luo Jinjing's older brother was a teacher in this school so she sent her timid son here instead of to the capital schools.
The fifth one was Kang Yanmei, the eighth daughter of the Kang family, and the little niece of Kang Heng. Her mother was the only female Deputy General of the empire, and her father passed away on the battlefield. The Kang family was a military family, and she had exceptional talent in the area so her mom sent her here with the hope that her big brother could teach her since he lived in this town with his wife. Kang Yanmei also adored her uncle because he filled the empty shoes left behind by her father so she agreed without thinking twice.
Though all these super noble kids all had their conditions, they could not be offended. The Jiang siblings knew this so they didn't bother with them and just sat down quietly and continued to talk to each other. But they were the only commoners in sitting at the table so it was inevitable not to be in the spotlight.
"Hey, aren't you going to greet us?" Lao Meifeng asked arrogantly. These commoners dared to seat at their table without greeting them. How arrogant!
"Hello," The four siblings greeted simultaneously with a blank expressions on their faces.
"Is this how you greet people? Didn't your parents teach you manners?" Lao Meifeng wasn't one to let go and thus continued to bellow the siblings.
"Our parents did teach us manners, but our gege taught us how to act with dignity. Our gege have always said not to bow our heads to those who did not deserve it, so why would we bow our head to you?" Jiang Chaoxiang was calm unlike Lao Meifeng and thus his words sounded more and more sophisticated. If one didn't know they would have thought that Lao Meifeng was the commoner and Jiang Chaoxiang the noble. Even Lao Meifeng noticed this, so she became more furious but before she had the time to explode somebody interrupted her.
"Yes, that is right big brother Chaoxiang. If we do not follow the orders of mommy then that would be a breach of fillial piety wouldn't it?" The always quiet Liu Qiu finally spoke up and when she did it was a sharp knife. She said such words with a cute smile on her face as she tilted her head, it looked like she mocking Lao Meifeng.
"That's right little sister, and fillial piety is above all if we did breach it wouldn't we be punished by the heavens?" Jiang Chun Hua said as she covered her mouth looking worried.
"I hear that third lady Lao was a very fillial child and would never dare to neglect her fillial duties, so how could she bare to make other people do it? Sister shouldn't speak so carelessly, people might say you're slandering." Cai'er said as he lightly patted the arms of Chun Hua. At this point the entire table was quiet. How did not greeting properly suddenly turn into neglecting fillial duties? The sibling really handed third Lady Lao well, and she could only concede because if she said no she would be admitting that she's unfilial. The Jiang sibling really surprised them today.
Hello, Lovelies! Here's an update!
