The Arcana. The anime is incredibly vague on what is it or how it works, and for someone like me who likes to know everything, that's extremely annoying.
The Arcana is a historical figure/weapon that is bonded to a person, based on their personality. The Arcana can then be leveled up through "Tiers". While it's never explicitly stated, it seems that leveling up works by gaining "experience", similar to a game. The more you fight and train, the quicker you Tier up. These two factors seem to be the only way to increase an Arcana's tier.
Lazing around does nothing.
Every time an Arcana tiers up, it gains a new power which it gives to the wielder. Arcana Tier 2 has two powers in total, for example. These powers have to be trained however in order to be effective.
And upon reaching Tier 2, the wielder will be able to talk to the Spirit inside of the Arcana. For example, if you had an Arcana named "Dustin" it would have the Spirit of Dustin inside. Of course, Dustin isn't an Arcana. That's stupid. These Spirits help guide the wielder to learn more about their powers.
And to track these powers, Arcana wielders are given an Adventurer Card, which tracks the powers of an Arcana wielder. This also means that if anyone finds it, every single one of the powers you have been hiding are suddenly discovered.
Basically, don't lose it if you have a hidden trump card.
And as I've said before, Arcanas are ranked from a letter scale of D, C, B, A and S, and they always manifest as a weapon in physical form, from swords to guns to whips and more.
From watching all of Heaven's Hell (except for the last episode), I have determined that this is how the Arcana system works. As to why it is this way, no clue. They never give a reason as to how or why the Arcanas were created.
However it happened, it is what makes Eric a legend and so powerful. Today is the day his story will be born. Eric Arthurson, a man that no one has heard of before, will awaken an S Rank Arcana known as...
Excalibur.
That's right. One of the most famous swords of all history, it's story told over and over again throughout the decades.
Of course a random man awakening an S Rank Arcana which happens to be EXTREMELY famous will gather attention. Lots of it.
This means if I can connect with a C Rank or B Rank Arcana, then I will easily hide in the shadow behind Eric, being the perfect mob character.
D Rank isn't strong enough, while A Rank and S Rank will bring me too much attention. B Rank is even a little higher than I want.
A C Rank, while weaker than B to S, with plenty of training can beat either of those. And I plan on training a heck load so I can survive the world threatening threat which shall appear. And also all of the yanderes and the smaller conflicts that occur throughout the anime.
Me, Eric, and Lily all stood in the cafeteria. It was mostly empty, except for the seats where the teachers sat and a machine.
The machine sat upon a podium which stood in the middle of the cafeteria. The machine looked similar to one of those giant "clone tubes". There was no liquid inside, however.
Somehow, in someway, this lets students unlock their Arcanas. This can put a stress on their bodies however, which is why they wait until the first year of highschool in order to awaken the Arcana. Any time before is dangerous and illegal.
The students who passed the exam stood in the room, waiting for the Awakening to start. Each and every one of these students have admired adventurers once in their life, enough to want to be one. After all, the written exam was created to only allow people prepared to awaken their Arcana to pass. It'd be too dangerous otherwise. For both the world and the students themselves.
One of the people who was sat down on a chair, stood up and walked to the mic sat in front. The person was the one and only Principal, Aiko Kato.
"Welcome to the Awakening." Aiko greeted. "All of you today have passed, and will shortly be attending Legacy High, the best Adventurer School here in Japan."
"Now I could stay up here and speak for a long time, but I feel like that would be boring." Aiko stated. "Instead, I'll let one of your seniors, an upcoming second year who all of you have heard of, speak for me."
"Welcome, Iris Aegis." Aiko said, waving her up.
Iris walked over to the mic from somewhere in the cafeteria. Aiko sat back down as Iris took the mic.
"Hello freshmen!" She smiled. "All of you are soon to become Adventurers-In-Training, starting your own journey. At this school, you will learn about monsters, how to fight, how to protect, and how to be an adventurer that can help the people."
"You all are about to go through the Awakening, which will allow you to bond to your Arcanas. Get ready, this is the start of your own story." She continued. "Once you awaken, you may go home. The physical test will occur in two days, allowing you to rest and train."
The students clapped and cheered as Iris bowed and also sat down next to the Principal, with the rest of the teachers.
That's what happens when you're a model student.
"Yuji Nakamoto." A teacher called out.
The student walked over, going inside of the Awakening Chamber. The chamber then started to glow. A couple seconds later, the student walked back out, a little dazed. He held a card which was printed with the name and rank of his Arcana.
"What is it?" The teacher asked.
"Perseus. C Rank." Yuji answered.
The Greek hero who slayed Medusa.
The teacher nodded. "You may go now."
The teacher then proceeded to call more students, all which had Arcanas ranking from D to B. Nothing too special had appeared yet. And I'm curious, because the anime didn't show everybody go through the Awakening.
"Lilith Akuma." The teacher called.
Lily looked towards us nervously. Eric gave her a nod, while I gave her a simple thumbs up. She smiled, heading up to the Awakening Chamber.
She entered the Chamber. After a couple seconds later of glowing, she came back out slightly dazed.
"What is it?" The teacher asked.
"Hassan. B Rank." Lily stated.
Hassan. When I first heard this, I was confused as to who this was referring too. After some research and Reddit conversations, I decided it was the Hassan which created the Order of Assassins.
Lily then waved to us as she left the school. After a couple more students went by, still not a single A or S Rank had appeared.
"Eric Arthurson." The teacher called.
And now everything is going to get crazy.
Eric walked up, entering the Awakening Chamber. After a couple seconds, he was back out.
"What is it?" The teacher asked.
"Excalibur. S Rank." Eric stated, slightly shocked.
Everybody went silent.
"What? Did I hear you correctly?" The teacher asked, also shocked.
Eric nodded, handing the teacher the card.
"My god..." The teacher gasped, reading the card.
The first S Rank of this year had randomly appeared. The students went crazy, clapping and cheering.
As Eric started to leave, he looked at me still shocked to the core. In a good way, of course. I gave him a small smile and thumbs up.
"Ken Kage." The teacher finally said as the students calmed down.
It's time.
I walked through the students, heading up to the Awakening Chamber. As I got up there, I saw Iris watch me as our eyes connected.
I took a deep breath, entering the strange machine.
It was a one way window, so it was extremely dark in here. I heard the door shut behind me, leaving me in the darkness. The machine started to glow, illuminating the room.
As I closed my eyes, I felt a strange feeling start to bubble inside me, trying to burst out. A voice entered my ears, catching me by surprise.
"You're certainly an interesting one." The voice said. "Not from here, wanting to stay in the shadows, wanting to survive. You don't want to make the same mistake."
"How interesting." The voice commented. "I think you'll be perfect. For now, hold the wolf's fangs. We will speak again soon, friend!"
The feeling burst inside of me, making me gasp out of surprise. Was that...the feeling of awakening an Arcana?
It was strange. I never want to feel that again. It felt like my stomach just popped like a bubble. I pressed my hands down on my stomach. It's still there, good.
The machine dispensed a card in front of me, allowing me to pick it up and look at it.
Fenrir. C Rank.
The famous Wolf of Norse Mythology. That's certainly...strange. What do I have in common with him? It is perfect however, being a C Rank.
I walked out of the machine, misplacing my feet and stumbling slightly. No wonder everybody looked so dazed...
"What is it?" Asked the teacher.
"Fenrir. C Rank." I stated.
The teacher nodded.
I walked away, taking one last glance at Iris who seemed to watch me as I left.
There's nothing for you to see. I'm just your average mob character with your average Arcana.
