"Are you alright?" Tobias asked a quiet Eniola who had been picking at her food for the past ten minutes.
The others had chosen a farther table to give them some privacy except Rebecca who had wandered off some time ago. Tobias had also made sure he sent Riccardo to watch after her.
"I am." She responded quietly and he frowned.
Davis being out of their sight worried her. It was obvious from the way she flinched every time the restaurant's door opened or when someone walked passed their table.
"You're worried. I understand." He knew his answer was extremely unhelpful. If offering Davis's head on a platter would ease her worries, he would do that in a heartbeat.
"Do you think Paulo lied about Berlusconi?" She asked.
"I do not think we have the entire story. If he can lie while looking death in the eye, he's bolder than I give him credit for. But still, I believe there's an element of truth. For instance, the judge's last name is Berlusconi. That can't be coincidence..." He seemed to be talking to himself at that point.
"I don't think I'll ever get used to you talking like that." She said and he raised a brow at her. What way?
"I do not understand."
"Death. You're talking about it so... casually. It's a bit weird." She explained then took a sip from her drink. Oh.
"I thought you would want me to be honest. I'm sorry." He said quietly. For him, death was as casual as the weather or puppies and kittens. He could not help it. The past few years had taken their toll on him and he had grown to love all four of the casual topics.
"If you're being honest, I have a question." She replied and he felt himself get nervous. What could she possibly want to ask about? And he had promised to always tell the truth to her.
"Of course. What would the question be?" He asked, taking a quick second to look at his watch. It was only 12:56.
"It's about Felicio," Enny asked and he immediately craned his neck to see if any of his men were eavesdropping behind him, not that they ever would. Thankfully Luca was distracted by a waiter and the main concern, Alvaro seemed to be in an argument with Clara.
"Alvaro told you about him?" He asked and she nodded. At least the topic took her mind off the missing Davis. "He must have also told you he was Luca's brother, sì?" She nodded again.
"I know who he is. I want to know what happened to him." She said just as he looked behind again to meet eyes with Luca who just smiled and continued conversing with the man.
"He passed away." He tried to keep it as vague as possible. He hoped she would understand he could not tell her everything.
"Varo also told me that. He said it like the man deserved to die." Because he did.
"What is your question, Princess?" He asked carefully. He knew where the woman was heading. He was not sure Varo would approve of him telling the entire story.
"What did he do?" He looked at her for a full second, internally debating if telling her was worth it. Was keeping her trust worth exposing a secret he had kept with him for so long? Unfortunately, it wasn't. It was Varo's story to tell.
"Eniola, how do you do it? My brother is so boring!" Thankfully, they were interrupted by Rebecca whom a flustered Riccardo chased after. He looked tired of her bullshit.
"I am not." He brushed off, meeting Enny's eyes that almost screamed 'We'll talk about this later.'
Tobias sighed.
"If you say so, Izan." She said picking a fry from Enny's bow and plopping on an empty seat. "We should go out sometime. You know, when Tobias is not hovering over you like a hawk."
"I'm not hovering over her." He grumbled. He was only making sure she was safe.
"You are. You're always with her. It's creepy, dummkopf." Tobias raised his hands in surrender. The woman had only been here for one hour. How would she know he was always with her?
"It's alright. I really don't mind." Eniola said with a kind smile and Tobias lightly returned it. He knew very well she would never let go of the Felicio topic.
"Right... My brother told me you draw houses. What's that like?" Rebecca suddenly changed the topic and they got into their conversation while Eniola tried to explain that architecture was not just about drawing houses.
The two women got into their conversations comparing Italian fashion to the French and he withdrew into his space. He looked back at the table his men were at to realize that Alvaro and Clara were absent.
"Where are they?" He asked quietly and Mateo was the first to answer.
"Varo spotted an officer and he dragged Clara to check it out. They're right outside..." His voice faded as they both turned to realize that there was no one outside. "That's strange. They were right there a moment ago."
Tobias beckoned Mateo and Luis to escort him outside as his phone vibrated. It was a text message from Alvaro;
Detrás el restaurante.
"They're behind this restaurant." He said as they got outside. The cold air immediately bit his skin and he regretted taking off his coat and blazer in the restaurant.
It was a bit tricky to get to the back but after ignoring all the FOR AUTHORISED PERSONNEL and STAFF ONLY signs, they found the trio just as Clara smacked a police officer right across the face.
Clara?
"Yeah! That's how you fucking do it!" Varo egged her own with the familiar sadistic glint in his eyes. "Now try punching him no— kick him in the balls." He advised before Luis awkwardly cleared his throat, getting their attention. Interrupting Varo's sadistic practices was not one the family liked to do. Even Tobias. He liked giving the lawyer space but this had to be an exception.
"M-mr Tobias." Clara paled like she had been seen doing something horrible. He too would have recommended she did something worse. A smack across the face wouldn't do much damage.
"What's going on here, Varo?" He asked calmly stepping forward to closely examine the man. He already had a black eye forming and had a bleeding nose. His white skin that peeked from his torn shirt was all shades of red, black, and purple. Interesting.
"I found him stalking us and moving around the cars like Paulo," Alvaro explained breathlessly and Tobias glanced at the man over. He barely looked conscious and was having trouble sitting upright.
As Alvaro let him go, he slid to the floor.
"And you go on to beat him half to death without informing me first?" He asked squatting to the man's sitting position. He glanced at the lawyer who held a sheepish look and at Clara who just seemed like she wanted the ground to swallow her whole.
"I already know what you're doing here and who sent you. So, tell me... Sergei." He read from the man's name tag. German. Interesting.
"Tell you what?" The man managed to spit out, coughing a little bit of blood that Tobias expertly avoided. He didn't want to get any blood on the outfit Eniola picked out for him. It would be difficult to explain.
"Ah, not very patient, are we?" He said lightly, smiling at the man. "If you would give me a second." He slowly retrieved a dagger from his sleeve and even had the time to admire its tiger head handle. It was one of his many blades. Maybe his favourite. The size was his favorite thing about it and the blade rotated!
"Would you rather have your tongue or entire head cut off?" He asked gently dragging the blade down the petrified man's face. He knew very little pressure would break his skin.
"W-what?" The man croaked out and Tobias kissed his teeth. He hated repeating himself.
"Varo, recap?" Tobias asked almost politely, standing up from his position and he eagerly nodded.
"You want your head or your tongue on the fucking floor, detached from your fucking body?!" Varo yelled in Sergei's face, ending the question with a bone-cracking punch to his nose. Ouch. "Talk you fucking bastard!" He caught him by the collar before he could fall sideways.
"N-none... None!" The man stuttered, cringing in pain as Alvaro pinched the already broken nose out of morbid curiosity.
"That's what I thought," Tobias said with the tiniest smile. The cop was easy to break. Paulo would have probably still enjoyed the gift of speech and maybe life if he had complied like him. "Where's Davis?" He asked straightforwardly.
"H-he's... He's-" His stammering became worse as Varo's grip tightened on his collar.
"He's where?"
"He went to see Berlusconi." He finally said.
"At the court?" Mateo chipped in and the man shook his head.
"No. T—the judge is not the Berlusconi." Tobias had suspected that.
"You're going to have to give us more information, kid," Alvaro warned and the cop frantically shook his head.
"The judge is Giovanni Berlusconi the younger brother of Gianni Berlusconi. He's the one who wants Miss Gillian. I do not know why. I do not know about him. All I know is that Davis sends me out on assignments that's all. I don't know what they are up to. Please. I have a daughter and a wife at home. Please." The man begged but Tobias kept mute.
So Berlusconi has a younger brother who just turns out to be the judge ruling over Eniola's case? How convenient.
"And you have no idea where this Berlusconi is?" He asked and the man shook his head but paused suddenly.
"I know that he visits the NYPD every Tuesday and attends our local charity events. He funds the entire security force. That's why Davis is so loyal to him. Nobody really knows what he looks like but I heard he and Davis are similar." The man added.
"Is he publicly known as Berlusconi?" He asked and the Sergei shook his head again.
"I don't know. They don't tell us shit like that!"
"They got to be paying you big if you're doing all this like fucking Dumbo," Luis said and the group turned to see him perched on a desk with a cigar. Tobias almost cringed at how similar he and Varo looked at that moment.
"Can I see a picture of your wife and daughter, Sergei?" Tobias asked, gaining different looks of confusion from the guys and Clara.
"Uh... sure." The man answered before shakingly reaching for his wallet and showing Tobias a picture of a beautiful woman and a girl who looked to be around 5. The dark-skinned child had the most adorable set of broken teeth and her smile was the most innocent thing he had seen in a while. As much as Tobias chose to ignore it, he was a sucker for children. He couldn't imagine taking her father from her. Paulo probably had a family too. Boohoo.
"Beautiful family. What are their names?" He asked and the man's eyes lit in slight adoration for his small family. Tobias was almost envious.
"My wife is Mila. My girl is Adeline." The man answered getting a small "aww" from Varo.
"I have to admit, that's pretty cute." The lawyer said confessed and the rest muttered in agreement.
Tobias sighed and put the picture in front of the man.
"Take a long look at this picture, Sergei." He watched the man's brows furrow slightly.
"You're going to kill me." His voice was almost a whisper, his eyes lowering in surrender.
"What? Of course not." Tobias said in mock surprise, making Varo laugh in the background.
"Then what are you going to do?" Sergei was exhausted and so was he. He wanted to get it over and done with too.
"I honestly do not know. I usually kill people like you or permanently scar them but little Adeline has stolen my heart and you seem like a good man. Oh, I have an idea!" Tobias added with a spark of enthusiasm. He repeated to himself that the man was worth the investment.
"What's the idea?" Sergei asked nervously.
"I will make a deal with you." He smiled fully with Clara watching him cautiously. He was sure the two men behind him were watching him the same way too. His deals were always on the dangerous side. The only person who shared his mischievous expression was Alvaro. He knew he couldn't wait to hear it.
"What deal?" The man asked again and Tobias threw his picture at him, getting up.
"It's quite simple really— your loyalty and servitude for as long as you would live and I will never harm your family."
He loved these kinds of deals.
