"Yin, if you don't get your... self off that couch and into this bed-" She could swear her eye twitched as she watched the older twin jump on the couch.
They all said he was just like her and she now saw it clearly. At least, I didn't give my parents sleepless nights.
She looked at Casimiro who seemed to have more fun listening to his animal sounds audio book than actually going to sleep as well.
"Not you too..." Her perfect child had other ideas.
She pulled her hair back and marched to where Alejandro entertained himself, dragging him off the couch with all her might.
"I don't wanna go to bed!" He protested, crying as she still pulled him towards their bedroom.
"Well, I don't want two insomniac children but we don't always get what we want now, do we?" He whined in protest, running off when she mistakenly loosened her hold. "Oh for fuck's sake!"
The chaos continued, Alejandro seemingly running on pure caffeine as he raced around her, using one of their safety mats as a cape and pretending he was Superman.
Usually, Eniola would leave them and just go to bed but with nobody else in the house to supervise them, they would burn the whole thing down. 'They' as in Alejandro Olayinka Fernandez. Casimiro would probably roast marshmallows with the fire.
Where the fuck is he? She wondered as the front door opened simultaneously.
She was beyond relieved.
"Thank God!"
Tobias stared at Eniola in confusion as she sat on the floor and then at their older twin who was still playing superhero.
Casimiro paused his audiobook to look at their father. "Papá."
"Buenas noches, papá!" Alejandro yelled, running at full speed toward Tobias who knew very well to brace himself.
It didn't help as the boy speared him onto the padded floor.
"You're only five... how are you so big?!" Tobias asked and he just laughed, flexing the chubby rolls on his arms he believed to be biceps.
"I'm very strong. I eat a lot of chocolate!" he said proudly and Tobias blew air at him.
"Chocolate makes you sick, mi gordito." He was barely done pinching Alejandro's cheeks before Eniola pulled him to herself.
"Now what did I tell you about calling my baby fat?" She said and he just smiled at her, stealing a peck on her cheek.
He gave Alejandro a once-over. "Well he's not exactly skinny now, is he?"
Eniola narrowed her eyes at him but patted the chubby toddler's belly.
"He's just a little round. Shows he's eating well."
"Uh huh..." he teased, kissing her again. "You're looking a little round yourself. Eating well?"
She automatically flicked him between the eyes before getting on her tippy toes to kiss him. "Welcome home, baby. I've been trying to tuck them in but there's way too much energy in them right now."
"You look tired," he pointed out as she pulled away. "Go lie down. I'll handle it."
Eniola would usually insist on assisting him or at least be there to help but not this time. She was going to fall asleep on her feet if she stood for more than two minutes.
"Really?" she asked, smiling as he kissed her forehead. He was very affectionate and touchy when it came to her.
"Really, my Queen. I'll be up in five minutes." Tobias assured her and she chuckled before slipping away.
"You think it won't take you longer?"
Tobias caught Alejandro's attempt to pull his hair without needing to look. "Trust me, darling. It won't."
She took her time to actually follow her skin care routine and spent even longer time under the hot shower. She really couldn't remember the last time she felt cold water. Tobias' habit had gotten to her.
It was understandable because the water felt so good.
After drying her body, she didn't bother with a towel save for the one she used to dry her hair. That was how busy she was. Hair not fucking done. She couldn't decide on getting braids or installs.
"Any would be fine. But it's been a while since I saw you with straight hair," Tobias said from his position at the side of the bed as he unbuttoned his shirt.
She wasn't even surprised he knew exactly what she was thinking. It was pretty obvious from the way she frowned and tugged at the ends. Her curly hair had been longer before but she had cut it short.
It was always funny trying to see Tobias hide the anguish on his face whenever the hair would slip out of the bun he put it in because it was too short. He never wanted her to mention anything that had to do with scissors ever again.
"Done already?" She asked as she lazily threw the towel on a sofa.
His eyes stayed on the piece of cloth for a few moments and she just knew he was seconds away from picking it up.
"You took half an hour... That's more than enough time to tire them out." He said as he stood up and she went to his closet while he picked up the towel.
By the time he returned, he had changed into a shirt and sweatpants and she was in just his and was about to get in bed when he stopped her.
"Yes?" she asked, batting her lashes at him because she knew exactly why she was being stopped.
Tobias pulled her up, unimpressed. "You forgot to braid your hair."
"I'll do it tomorrow."
"It will be tangled tomorrow and you're going to make me help you comb it out," he said, brush in hand.
Eniola smiled at him. Of course he knew to bring a brush along.
"Help me braid?"
He looked like he wanted to disagree but sighed. "Fine. But only because you're tired."
She flung her arms around his neck, pulling her to him as their lips connected. He kissed her back, successfully lifting her off the bed. She laughed into his mouth, gasping when his tongue slipped in.
Eniola pulled away and put her palm over his mouth, snickering at the confused and disappointed look in his eyes. He looked like she had kicked him over.
"I'm not doing it with you. I'm very tired."
Yeah, he looked betrayed but closed his eyes and blew air into her palm so she would let go. "Okay..."
"Good, boy. Now put me down and treat me like the Queen I am." He laughed but kissed her cheek before setting her on the pile of pillows.
Tobias sat on the bed behind her and picked up the brush, running it through her damp hair as he always did.
"You're busy these days," he noted. "Two braids?"
"Just one... And it's the end of November. There's a lot of wrapping up to do at the office," she complained, dropping her head on his thighs but he set her back up.
"Fuego, head upright," Tobias' voice was firm for a moment and fuck, if it didn't sound good. "You're working very hard. I'm going to take you on the longest vacation next year. You deserve it."
She brought her hand to her mouth to cover her yawn. "That sounds nice. Where would we go?"
"Well, Greece? I hear Santorini is beautiful in January. There's a lot of places to visit in Mykonos as well," he said calmly, his fingers gently raking through her hair. Everything he did was soothing.
"That's far... I thought we would go to Majorca or Madrid again. I don't want to be far from the kids."
"Well, darling..." he patted her head. "You need a break. They'll be fine with Varo and Clara for a few weeks."
"Weeks?!"
"Yes, weeks. I'm all done now. Should I get your bonnet?" he asked as he stood up and she fell against the edge of the bed.
"No need for that... Just get me in bed." Eniola stretched her hands towards him with her eyes closed, expecting him to lift her up.
When he didn't, she peered at him. He stood in front of her with his arms crossed.
"What?"
"You haven't agreed," he said stubbornly and she frowned.
She just wanted to sleep.
"I'm not leaving my babies for weeks." She could be stubborn too.
"How about ten days?" Tobias bargained and she shook her head, opting to stand up herself.
"Fuck, no. I'll miss them too much."
"How about seven days? One week isn't that long."
She got into bed, pulling the blanket over her body and faced away from him. "Fuck. No."
It was all quiet until she suddenly felt suffocated and had weight on her.
"Tobias..." she warned, feeling his arms wrap around her body, making the blanket a cocoon.
"Fuego..." he said in the exact same tone.
"For fuck's sake—"
"You don't have to curse so much."
"Get off of me before I kill you."
"Say you'll come with me to Greece," he quipped and she groaned.
"I want to sleep."
"Likewise."
"Then get off of me or I'll knee you in the nuts," Eniola threatened, feeling him nuzzle into her neck and chuckle.
"You love them too much for that. I don't believe you." True.
Before she could make a comeback, their bedroom door twisted open.
"Mama, I had a bad dream." Casimiro's voice was small and timid as he sleepily rubbed his gray eye with one hand and the other tightly held on to his little blanket.
Eniola quickly shoved Tobias off, her annoyed look turning into one of concern as she sat up. "My poor baby, come sit here." She patted the bed, smiling as he stumbled up and onto the bed, sitting right between her and Tobias.
"What did you dream about, Mu?" he asked and the boy shook head, cuddling into his mother's side.
"I don't remember..." he whispered. "I wanna stay with mama."
It looked like Eniola's heart melted as she pulled him into a hug, patting down his short hair that irritated him when it grew too long. Alejandro on the other hand would bite at anyone that held a clipper close to his head.
"It's okay, you can sleep here," of course she would agree. She had zero immunity to his pretty eyes.
Tobias pouted.
"Don't you think Yin would feel lonely?" he asked and the door opened at the exact same time with the other twin rubbing his eyes as well.
"I can't find Casi—" he frowned, walking up to the bed and pointing an accusing finger at him. "You left me."
Casimiro was comfortable in his mother's arms but looked guilty. "Sorry... I had a bad dream."
Alejandro still did not seem convinced but fluffed the pillow next to Tobias and laid down.
"Wake me first next time," he said, scowling before closing his eyes and facing his father.
Tobias rolled his eyes but pulled down his durag that was almost slipping off. Nothing ever stayed in place when it came to the older twin.
He was asleep in seconds, only interrupted by his brother's absence. Eniola calmly patted Casi who had never had trouble sleeping while she also slipped in and out of consciousness.
"Fuego, you can lie down," Tobias said softly, smiling at her as she roused.
She only nodded and put her head on the pillow she shared with Casimiro.
"Goodnight..."
He watched all three of them as they slept. Sleep was far from his eyes before opting for his kindle by the bedside.
One of the best things about retiring was how much time he had to read books and he had a nightly routine that he followed religiously. At least two chapters. Every single night.
He read even more during the day.
His current book was by James Hadley Chase. He was one of Tobias' favorite authors.
Exactly after two chapters, he yawned and put the Kindle down, looking at the kids between him and Eniola. He was jealous.
He quietly stood up, carefully setting the extra blankets and pillows by the bed and on her side before lifting Alejandro up.
He put him in the small nest he made and then his brother next, pulling a duvet over them and then increasing the heater in case it got too cold.
After that, he kissed both their foreheads, whispered goodnight and then got in bed with an arm around Eniola's waist.
He could swear he heard her laugh.
