Aurora
"How has your day been so far?"
Aurora took a sip of her frozen lemonade and began to think about her day. If she had to be completely honest with herself, it was nothing compared to any of the movies she had watched in the past. It was the total opposite of what had occurred today.
Besides talking to the person in front of her, which happened to be Chandler, nothing else exciting had happened. Either than the usual negative behavior of Lauren toward Aurora. Chandler offered to buy her lunch, which was at the exact coffee shop where they both worked at.
Chandler was two years younger than Aurora. It was a bit weird at first, having a boy younger than her as a friend but she became quickly accustomed to the age difference. Chandler acted mature for his age, which was eighteen and acted like he was the one who was older.
She learnt that Chandler was captain of the basketball team and he was also part of the school's track team. She had failed to notice that the jacket he was wore once was indeed a basketball jacket with his name on it, which she thought made her look stupid. She was embarrassed that she hadn't realized it.
Chandler fit the criteria of being your average high school "it boy" from his looks only. Knowing that he was very athletic too was a bonus for that. Unlike his features and different qualities which included his boyish charm, Chandler was a really nice guy.
He looked like those typical jocks in the old movies Aurora enjoys. Where the popular boy has blonde hair and pale blue eyes, the type of look all girls in the school would fawn over. Aurora has considered Chandler to be cute but it would be gross to think if Chandler in any type of way that isn't known to be friendly. Besides being two years younger than her, she just couldn't see him in that way.
She was surprised by how nice Chandler has been to her. Judging by how uncivil his friends were, one would think that he would be just like his friends. Aurora felt very out of place amongst his friends especially with one of the boy's named Sean. Sean wasn't exactly rude to her or anything but something about him was just very off putting.
They had visited the cafe once and the stares she had received from him made her shy away, and not in a good way.
Aurora did not feel comfortable around him even though he did nothing to bother her. There was something in his gaze as he stared at Aurora, something that did not scream anything positive. His lingering gazes on her exposed thighs as she sat down had her sick to her stomach, his eyes trained on her body was sickening.
Although she pretended not to notice, it was difficult to look past that.
Moving on from Sean, there were two other guys who were much more friendlier than him. The two twins whose names were Parker and Ashton, were the ones who were so fond of Aurora as much as she was of them. She felt a sort of connection with them, a bond which resembles one of a sibling and it was what warmed her heart.
"It was really good. I l-love this job!" she smiled widely at him.
Chandler smiled back at her. The effect she had on him and his friends were understandable since everything about her was so alluring. She captivated them without even knowing, and without even doing anything.
That's just who she was. A little bundle of joy just spreading the seeds of positivity, growing into an infamous amazement gathered by everyone she met. She was a girl who not many people associated themselves with, yet the people she did, was amazed by this girl.
During their time together at the cafe he realized that Aurora was extremely shy. He also picked up that she had a slight stuttering problem, which could be from the lack of contact she had with people. He understood that maybe she was like this because she does not speak that much at home, or people could just intimidate her.
She was just such a sweet girl.
"Do you find any fault with the city? Or maybe the environment?"
Aurora thought about it for a moment before she said, "It w-was nice. There are a bit of meanies at the apartment I stay at. There were two girls who said that my dress was ugly. Is my dress ugly, Chan?"
She looked at him with glossy eyes. Just thinking about the looks on those girls faces and the way they insulted her dress was pretty mean. She didn't like how they laughed at her outfit when in-fact the outfit they wore looked a bit too small.
But Aurora won't ever judge someone else.
"Your dress is beautiful Aurora. Don't let the words of other people get to you. They are just saying that because they are jealous of how pretty it is." he said.
She furrowed her brows. "Jealous? But they said i-it was ugly."
Chandler chuckled at her naivety. "That is exactly why they said it. To make themselves feel superior, as if their clothes were better than yours."
Aurora stayed silent.
"I haven't asked you this question before, but why am I only seeing you now? I mean I would have remembered a pretty face like yours if I have." he said with a little wink at the end.
She knew what he was referring to. Aurora had moved to the city just over a month ago to get a better life close to the hospital. She wasn't from this city and she never told anyone where she moved from, or what her situation was.
Aurora giggled at her silly friend. "I-I have been homeschooled this entire time. My p-parents thought that it would be a good idea i-if I didn't miss out on anything."
She hated how she was lying to him but she knew that it wouldn't be right for her to tell him the true reason. Aurora didn't want to burden anyone else with her news since she already disclosed this information to someone who she had longed to see.
Chandler gave her a small nod, showing her that he understood what she meant.
"Did you enjoy being homeschooled?"
Aurora started playing with her straw as she began to think about it. "No" she answered him. "I was always in my house, never getting the full experience. I d-didn't like it because I never got to have any f-friends."
She thought about how the teachers at the orphanage mistreated her whenever she couldn't spell a word right. How badly they spoke to her whenever she made a mistake, but she shook the bad memories away.
"You never had a friend before?" he asked in disbelief.
She shook her head. "T-there was a girl in kindergarten but after that no."
Chandler took her hand and squeezed it. "Hey." he said softly and she looked at him with her doe eyes. "You have me now. I'm going to be the bestest friend ever!"
Aurora giggled at him. It hadn't made sense to her how someone as popular as Chandler could be so immature and funny in front of her. He looked like a stuck up good for nothing play boy and it made her doubt him, but looking at him now he was just being himself.
Aurora gave him a toothy grin. "Bestest friend?"
He nodded his head vigorously. "It's like the best of best friends. Will you be my bestest friend Aurora?"
"Mmh!" she agreed, her eyes glimmering with so much delight that it was impossible for Chandler not to smile at her.
She was so eager to know where this friendship would lead, thinking about how she had just met him a few weeks ago. She had only gathered enough knowledge from all the tv shows that she had watched to know that male friends were always better than female friends. There were many movies where a male friends lasted longer than that of a female friend.
Aurora hoped her theory could only be correct. She envisioned a lot of fun that they could have if he was genuine about being her best friend. She could care less about how fast paced the friendship was, but the good start that they had, it made her very happy.
She just wanted to be happy.
She just wanted a friend. Now she has a friend.
"I have to use the bathroom real quick. I'll be right back okay?"
Aurora nodded her head as she sipped on her lemonade.
After he left to go to do his business in the bathroom, the bell to the restaurant opened alerting that someone had entered. Since their booth was close to the door of the restaurant, her interest peeked to see who it was that entered. She was already bored out of her mind because of Chandler leaving her alone, so she became keen to see the customers around her.
Aurora looked over at the entrance of the restaurant, and it was not only her that fell silent. Every single soul in the restaurant had stopped talking, there were still a few whispers going around but other than that, it was deathly quiet. The waiter who stood beside Aurora serving the opposite table had stopped, frozen to the floor as he watched the people who had entered.
Three men had stepped inside.
She noticed the first two men who were discussing something amongst themselves, oblivious to the how everyone had stopped moving the moment they made an appearance. These men looked scary. They were both tall and looked like those men in the movies she had watched, the type of men who could shoot you the moment you stare at them too long.
The first man she saw had beautiful long black hair. His hair looked healthier than her hair, as it flowed to the pads of his shoulders in such a graceful way that it made her jealous. He was turned towards her so she could see his face, and this man was really beautiful.
His face was clean shaven, void of any facial hair which indicated that he shaves at least every day. His eyes were a beautiful hazel color, glistening under the sunlight that had kissed his face and with her good eyesight, she noticed the flecks of dark brown floating in his orbs.
The second man however, she could only make out the outfit he was wearing. His back was facing her as he conversed with the long haired man. She saw that he had shorter hair than the other one, his hair was blonde and it was short as it trailed to the back of his neck. Her eyes caught aight of a marking peeking out of the collar of his shirt, a black pattern was glued to his olive skin but she couldn't make out what it was.
She noticed that the way they were dressed, made them appear as really important people. She thought by judging from the eerie silence and the way everyone stared at these men, they must be really important people. Aurora however did not know anything about these men since she was new to the city, and she never watched the news.
She made a mental note to watch the news from now on.
When her eyes flitted to the third man standing behind the other two with his hands in the pockets of his pants, her breath had caught in her throat. Her movements stopped, the straw still in her mouth and her fingers wrapped around it as the frozen lemonade now melted on her tongue.
She felt as if she was dreaming.
Just like the other two men, he was dressed in formal attire consisting of a black shirt. Unlike his friends who wore black blazers, this man discarded his jacket and the tight fitted shirt was revealed. It defined every bit of his muscles and she could see his well built body. He didn't need to show off his body for her to know that he works out, judging from how well defined his muscles are from underneath the shirt.
Just like the first time she saw him, he wore a pair of slacks and dress shoes.
He stood a good distance from his other two friends who were now talking to the person behind the counter, probably asking about their reservation which is what rich people do. He had a stoic expression plastered on his face, completely void of any type of emotion as his eyes scanned the restaurant.
His dark eyes drank in every inch of the place, his gaze held so much scrutiny that it made her shy away. He had not seen her yet but Aurora felt as if her heart was going to burst this very second. His presence was suffocating, the authoritative and domineering aura he radiated had the entire restaurant silent including her.
She had always wanted to see him again, see him one more time since that night. He was now in front of her. He was a few feet away from her, yet she could not bring herself to approach him or even hope that he remembered her. He felt even more formidable than the last time, making her think that maybe that night, he was in his vulnerable state.
Aurora hoped that Chandler could hurry up from the bathroom so that they could pay and leave.
Then, his eyes landed on her.
