Aurora
Aurora bit the skin of her finger as she processed the information she had gotten from Matteo. She was still seated on the same spot, lost in her own thoughts concerning what she had just heard.
She knew there was something dark and sketchy about these men, especially Matteo, but she didn't know he was involved in something this dangerous.
Whatever the mafia was that he had described, it sounded like it was something worse than what a criminal could do. It was not your average gangster robbing people and opening fire on civilians.
She felt even more scared to live her. There was even a tiny whisper in the back of her head to run away. She wanted to sneak out and run away, but where would she go? If she asked for help from the police, she was sure that Matteo would do something to make the police never cross him again.
Besides, she did not want to leave in the first place. Even though he revealed to her that he was someone very dangerous, she still wanted to stay with him. They have spoken a lot more to each other tonight than they have ever done. He had said more words to her tonight, even if it was to explain himself, but she liked it.
She liked living here, with him. If she would run away, she would just be homeless which was even worse than owning a crappy apartment. To leave this place could never be considered an option.
She was going to come to terms with his occupation and what he does for a living. Matteo hadn't done anything that harmed her, yet. She trusted him to never cause her any harm.
Aurora groaned as she felt her head begin to throb. There were countless times where she had to just endure the pain that came along with the annoying headaches, involving her sickness. She forgot to take her medication today because of what had happened. A silly mistake on her part that caused this headache to appear.
She rubbed her eyes, and began to massage her temple. Looking down at the white counter, her movements seized as she took in the droplets of scarlet that created a contrast against the milky counter. Her hand slapped against the base of her nose immediately, and when she looked at the tips of her fingers, blood was smeared on them.
She hated that she had just stained Matteo's countertop. She pinched her nose, tipping her head a bit forward like she had done whenever she had a nosebleed.
Her vision began to become a bit more clouded by blur. A sharp pain struck through her head, and she gasped in pain.
"Matteo." she murmured.
Her body felt as if it was being drained from it's energy. Her body toppled off the stool, but she caught herself before she could hit the ground. Blood dripped from her nose and fell onto the floor, some even dripping onto her sweater.
"Matteo." she said even louder, before she lost consciousness and her body gave in, not before calling his name a third time.
~~~
Aurora struggled to open her eyes as the bright light hurt her sensitive eyes. She took a moment to clearly see what was going on and all she saw was the white ceiling before her. Confused she turned to the side, where a familiar figure stood writing something on his clipboard.
She opened her mouth to say something to him but her throat felt dry and itchy. No sound escaped her lips but a broken cough.
The man heard it and peered up at her, his mouth forming into a small smile as he grabbed her a water from the table.
"Aurora, you're awake." Doctor Jamison said with a soft smile.
He handed the water over to her and she took it, gulping it down and feeling the cool liquid ease away the dryness. She sighed with content and wiped the excess water off of her face.
She looked around the room, confused. "W-what happened?" she asked.
Doctor Jamison sighed. "You were brought here because you were found passed out in the kitchen with blood dripping from your nose. A man who I didn't recognize, quite a violent one too, he brought you in."
She grimaced at the thought of Matteo seeing her in that state. It must have been an unpleasant sight for him to witness and she felt bad.
"Where is he?"
"He is currently outside. I must say he is quite threatening." he chuckled.
"Is he allowed to come in?"
"Do you want me to call him inside for you?"
She nodded vigorously. Doctor Jamison excused himself to call Matteo.
About a few moments later, her eyes almost widened at how distraught and unkept he looked. His hair was all over the place as if he ran his hand through it a bit too much. He had on his sweatpants and a T-shirt, and he must have been wearing those for bed but she disrupted him before he could get any sleep.
The thing that caught her attention was the bit of worry that he showcased. It was such a foreign thing for her to see that Matteo could show emotion, besides having his natural blank face. He was worried about her?
"Are you okay?" he asked her, his voice a bit low and more gentle than his usual rough voice.
She gave him a shaky smile. "Yes."
He gave her a nod in return, his dark gaze never wavering from hers.
Doctor Jamison cleared his throat, her eyes snapped to his but Matteo didn't look away from Aurora. Doctor Jamison looked a bit uncomfortable and his face had a bit of a sad look which made her stomach turn.
"Aurora, I am afraid I might not have some good news for you." he said.
Her heart felt like it was being squeezed. "What is it?"
He glanced over at Matteo, looking a bit hesitant to say something further. She knew what his look meant and she for some reason wanted Matteo to stay here with her.
"He's okay." she said.
"Are you sure?" Doctor Jamison asked.
She gave him a nod. "I'm sure."
"Okay." he said.
Matteo walked over to the single chair that was positioned next to the bed. Aurora watched as he took a seat, his gaze now fixed on the doctor in front of them.
Doctor Jamison took a few seconds to compose himself, ridding himself from his black rimmed glasses and placing his clipboard down. Whatever he was about to tell them, she knew she wasn't going to like it.
"Aurora," he started, "we have noticed that the strongest medication we have prescribed to you has stopped working. It was advised for us to stop with the treatment but I had to be sure that your body would respond positively to it. However that was not the case."
Doctor Jamison watched Aurora to see her reaction. She was listening intently to what he was saying and without realizing it, her fingers grazed Matteo's and neither of them moved their hands.
"I don't know how to say this but Aurora your condition has worsened. It seems that you stopped responding to the medication and unfortunately we cannot prescribe more, since we gave the best option already."
"What d-does that mean?" she asked him.
Doctor Jamison looked as if he didn't want to continue this conversation, his eyes continuously flitting back and forth between her and the floor. It irritated Aurora because she was so impatient to know what was going on, but she kept quiet.
"You have been long without a possible donor and we haven't found an alternative to cure you. Now that we have prolonged this surgery for too long, the anemia has now formed into something completely different."
"What was the reason for not doing the surgery?" Matteo interjected.
"It was suggested that we have immediate surgery but because there was no possible donor it was impossible."
That was the reason but part of it was because she didn't have the money to cover the cost of the surgery. She considered taking out a loan but with her circumstances there was no way the bank was going to grant her a loan. All hope that she had was the medication.
"It formed into what?" Aurora asked him.
He looked at her, his eyes glazed with tears brimming them. She felt her heart thumping loudly in her ears, her fingers finding there way entangled with Matteo's and his grip on her hand tightened.
Doctor Jamison then said,
"Aurora I'm so sorry, but you have leukemia."
IM SORRY!!! Please don't kill me.
You all knew this was bound to happen and she was sick. *runs away*
